steve, the temptations of the flesh are so numerous, and availiable at the touch of the finger today.tv and all its, shows ,movies, internet, the ability to travel to places in minutes that promote sin.the flesh is weak to begin with and when you advance society to a point where availiability is within seconds of thought,or temptation ,sin is and will abound.

greetings. It is hard to be a christian for there are numerous ,thousands upon ten thousands christians who have not listened to the master's words .Judge not and ye shall not be judged.Christians are to minister the saving truth ,not judge their neighbor with fire and brimstone.
---earl on 7/16/07

Being set apart from the world is not easy, it is easier to conform to the world (be like). However, God promised it would be worth it in the end (reward of Heaven the the Crown of Life).
---Leslie on 7/16/07

It's hard because in todays society people are not willing to say they beleive in God as they beleive it's not cool. Also i reckon it's hard because people are now starting to see releigion as something that is dangerous. The people who take part in these terrorist attacks all say that it was their God that told them to do it. although there is no christians conducting these attacks people will still probably see christianity as been dangerous and go for something less well known.
---Katie on 7/16/07

Because the majority of people have chosen culture over morality.
The Christian ideal is rejected mocked and scorned.
The simple idea that faith in Jesus could supply all one's needs is even lost among many Christians. If you never try it why would you buy it.

Bruce, I think you answer was great. I myself command you for looking closely at what you were going to say. I believe Tina somehow got it the wrong way. Is it hard to be a Christian? No it isn't. Is life hard for us each day? sure it is. But as you said we rejoice because greater is He who is in us then he who is in the world. Not because we don't struggle, but because Christ is with us when we struggle. We are not alone. I thought it was a great answer.
---lisa on 10/13/06

2. Take the part about losing a love one, Of course it is hard. It is hard even if you are not a Christian. But our joy is that Christ will see us through. The unbeliever does not have any hope in anything. So we rejoice in Christ through our struggles and are made more effected for Christ through our struggles because when things are going good we forget about Him many times, but when something is bad, we come running to Him. Great answer Bruce.
---lisa on 10/13/06

Wow, I didn't think of it as hard at all. God has given me a peace, and strength that is supernatural. Nothing can sway me. God is with me and protects me, He is in me. God give us something we can not get anywhere else.
---Dottie on 10/13/06

It is hard to be a Christian because of all the horrible that exists around us.
---Helen_5378 on 9/28/06

Sure, life is very, very difficult, but it's your heart that is at peace.
---Steveng on 9/25/06

its hard only to give control of your life to God. thats what your are asking.God is our father. just as a parent spends their life trying to teach their children from birth, and during this process they rebel against us ,we as christians and his children don,t understand and won,t accept giving him control.
---tom2 on 9/24/06

I must tell you this. Many people become christians thinking that all their trials and tribulations will be over. I'm here to tell you they are just beginning. WHY? because satan has lost you and he will try to get you back. There will be test more than ever now. Paul said it best.
---Adon on 9/23/06

first and foremost, your not ready to give your heart to the Lord cos you dont want ot let go of the world, 2 your afraid of what your friends might say if you convert. And that is the strength of Satan. Last, your maybe ashamed of the gospel, you dont want friends to think your weird so, you want to come to heaven, take hold of our Savior NOW and never let go mate or else your a gonner
---jana on 9/23/06

Entertainment, the tool of Satan, keeps our minds off of the most important person - God. Im also including Christian entertainment movies, music and video games. When do we ever have the time to really meditate on the word and listen to the whispers of God? Our world is rushed. Every minute we are doing something - going to work, going to school and all those extracurricular activities. Even our Sabbaths or full.

How long do you think you can live without TV, Radio, DVDs, video games, CDs, the news, the internet, reading the paper or magazine or books, your cell phone (or any phone), computers, etc.? For those of you who live in a large city, could you survive living in a small town having a population of a thousand people in the middle of no where? Living a simple life away from modern conveniences is not as simple as it may sound for todays people.

(2.) .....walked to the chop block, in the arena with hungry Lion's, to the stake, a giant vat of boiling oil, the hanging noose and only God knows' what else! I can see them "Trembling and praying" why should I complain? We should count the persecutions as blessings , God makes us stronger through trials,He refines us, and our reward awaits in Heaven, isn't that what the Bible teaches? "Am I ready to live or die for the Lord" should be the question we ask our self.

(1.)I'm not going to jump on that pity and complaining bandwagon, I think of Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane, when He appeared before the courts, carried that heavy wooden cross, with thornes on His precious head, while being mocked by evil audacious people yelling "crucify Him!" I think of the many martyrs who joyfully gave their life for the sake of Christ,Stephen was young, and was stoned because he spoke "Gods Truth", I think how Gods people willingly(with out complaining).....

Bruce, your answer was a great one and yes, it is not hard to be a Christian. Nothing wrong with your answer Bruce. I don't think its hard either. Life is hard to everyone, but as others that are lost, ours has a hope they don't have, so as for me, I am so happy been a Christian and it is not hard at all. Actually, I wish I had been a Christian a long time ago and this way I would not have gone through so much. Praise God for His mercy. I believe Tina read too much into your comment.
---lisa on 9/22/06

Because Christians walking in the Spirit & not the flesh are living in direct opposition to the world system. We're in the minority of prevailing opinion of news, TV, family values & all that contradicts the humanistic view point. Jesus said He was hated & that we'd be hated too. The disciples' mission was a singular one; telling the gospel of Jesus Christ. We have same mission. God gave each other as believers to encourage in this "hard" calling. Remember: No difficulty in God's Kingdom.
---Linda on 9/22/06

Bruce: I remind you the question asks:
Why is it so hard to be a Christian.
Not Why is life so hard (in general)
Rx: And I said, life is hard for both Christians and non-Christians alike. But Christians are to count it all joy **when faced with various trials**. It is not easy to take up our cross and follow Him. If it were, wouldn't everyone be doing it? It would be easier to go the way of the world. Plus, Christians have an adversary--satan.

So Bruce,
Have you mastered the struggle against sin? Is it no longer "hard" for you? Christians have an enemy called sin and the devil. Non-Christians don't worry a lick about sin or the devil, and the devil doesn't bother about them either. Why would he need to? They are already lost. Being a Christian does not make life easier. Sure, we have hope in Christ. But no promise of an easier life.
---Tina5349 on 9/21/06

I would have to say yes ,life is hard for everyone, but even harder for a non believer.we as believers will mourn, and suffer ,but we have jesus, the knowledge of him,the strength from him to be able to count it as joy. Not saying we won,t suffer, and mourn, but we are believers ,we have an inheritance, a eternal destination with God. thats how we count it joy.paul wrote don,t think yourself as being afflicted by something that is not common to all men,but our joy is in the salvation of jesus.
---tom2 on 9/21/06

Tina,
"I have not resisted sin unto blood Bruce, have you? Always?"

I did not say anything about me suffering unto blood. I have no idea why you think I might have made such a claim.
---Bruce5656 on 9/21/06

Tina,
"But God does not punish us for our sin."
I never said anything about God punishing us for our sin.
"It's hard to count it all joy when our spouse is taken from us in a tragic car accident...
These things have nothing to do with the question. They are simply part of life.
I remind you the question asks:
Why is it so hard to be a Christian.
Not
Why is life so hard (in general)

Bruce said, "it's hard to be a sinner"
It is indeed *easy* to be a sinner. The Christian must struggle against sin and the struggle *against* sin is what is hard. The *way* of the sinner may be hard...because of temporal (not God's) punishment. But it is indeed easy to be a sinner. Ask me...I know.
---Tina5349 on 9/21/06

My post below should ask "What does the questioner have in mind?"
---Bruce5656 on 9/21/06

Bruce:I know both how to be abased, how to abound : every where and in all thingsboth to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need
Rx:Yes, but no where does he say that it will be easy. The way of the Christian is the way of the cross. The cross is not easy. If it were easy everyone would be doing it. It is a battle against sin. Our peace is with God, not with man. And in this Christian life we will suffer. If anyone says any differently, they lie. *Theology of the Cross*
---Tina5349 on 9/21/06

Bruce: Lots of what passes for persecution today is just life. Not persecution at all.
Rx: Yes, true. But the Christian life is hard. Hard doesn't always mean persecution. The struggle against sin is hard. I have not resisted sin unto blood Bruce, have you? Always?

Bruce: Yes we are told to "count it all joy". That is not "pretend it is OK". It is "count it all joy. Does that sound "hard?"
Rx:Yes, it does. It's hard to count it all joy when our spouse is taken from us in a tragic car accident, or when we are laid off and have no means to provide for our family, or when our child's body is ravaged by cancer. Christian or not, these things are hard. Yet Christians are to count it all joy...yes that is hard.
---Tina5349 on 9/21/06

Bruce said, It is hard to be a sinner. Prov 13:15, "Good understanding giveth favour: but the way of transgressors is hard."
Rx: Bruce, the way of the treacherous is hard...and indeed, our sin brings temporal punishment. But God does not punish us for our sin. Christ already paid the penalty on the cross for our sin. That does not mean that this life in Christ will be easy. The Christian life is the way of the cross. It is a theology of the cross vs the theology of glory.
---Tina5349 on 9/21/06

PART ONE:
Tina,
What does hard mean? What does the questioner have I mind?
The question as stated is "Why is it so hard to be a Christian in today's society. It is hard to be a sinner. Prov 13:15, "Good understanding giveth favour: but the way of transgressors is hard."
---Bruce5656 on 9/21/06

PART ONE b.
It is not hard to be a Christian. Other responses have focused on various "hardships", persecution etc. Yes we are told to "count it all joy". That is not "pretend it is OK". It is "count it all joy. Does that sound "hard?"

PART TWO;
Jesus said Matthew 5:11-12, "Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you."
This is why I asked what it was the person asking the question had in mind.
---Bruce5656 on 9/21/06

PART THREE:
Hebrews was written to Christians who were wondering the same thing. Hebrews 12:3-4, "For consider him (Jesus) that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds. Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin."
Few today who have resisted unto blood.
Lots of what passes for persecution today is just life. Not persecution at all.

Paul did know persecution and hardship.
---Bruce5656 on 9/21/06

PART FOUR
He knew what it was to resist unto blood, yet he said Philippians 4:11-13, "Not that I speak in respect of want: for . I know both how to be abased, how to abound: every where and in all thingsboth to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me."

#3
Those who have NO trials and tribulations in their life, may want to check and see if they are really "In Christ".
Those who suffer with Him will also be Glorified with Him. Romans 8
And the sufferings of this time are not worthy to be compared to the Glory that is to follow. Corinthians
---kathr4453 on 9/21/06

Lynn is correct. It begins with a total 100% surrender. As in Joshua, (our Jesus) Goes before us, HE drives out the enemy, which includes sin, worldliness, and those who would try to draw us away. The Book of Joshua is wonderful for the 100% surrendered.
*Notice in the Promise Land, there are valley's as well as mountain tops.
---kathr4453 on 9/21/06

Because we don't always Trust. When we are put through the fiery trials of life, and the fellowship of His sufferings, we can get very anxious. This certainly can cause so much anxiety. We learn to Trust the Lord. Sometimes a situation may take years to come to the full understanding, if God permits us to know. Some things we never know the answers to. We learn to Trust and Obey, by Faith, His promises, that He will never leave or forsake.
---kathr4453 on 9/21/06

Christians cause as much of today's problems in world as the seculars. Most Christian music does not glorify God, but glorifies the self (listen closely to the words). Most Christian movies, especially concerning end time events which are interpretations of one person, bring fear into the hearts of Christians. And now Christian video games of end time events. And worse, Christians gobble these things up, even if it does produce fear. Jesus says to seek those things that are good, but are we?

Moderator: I don't know about the movies or video games, but the music brings me closer to God. And I listen closely.

Bruce asks, "Since when is it hard to be a Chrisitan"?
Rx: Since we were baptized into Christ's death. James seems to think it is not so easy. "Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials"...If Christianity were so easy, everyone would be doing it. It is, in fact, a battle....and not of flesh and blood, but much more elusive and desperate....a battle against our sin nature.
---Tina5349 on 9/20/06

Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful." (Jn. 14:27) "Do not think that I came to bring peace on the earth; I did not come to bring peace, but a sword." (Mat. 10:34) "These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world." (Jn. 16:33) Our earthly tribulations continue even as we enjoy spiritual peace.
---Tina5349 on 9/20/06

Where does scripture promise us that the Christian life will be easy? We have, in the promise of the cross, peace, rest, and health. Our peace is with God. "Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ." (Rom. 5:1) But our peace is not with men. "Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you.
---Tina5349 on 9/20/06

It was hard for my until I fully 100% surrendered to His will in my life. Doing this on a daily basis is amazing.

I agree with Mrs Morgan. What are you talking about exactly?
Since when is it hard to be a Chrisitan?
Matthew 11:28-30, "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."
---Bruce5656 on 9/20/06

Because God's way of doing things is contrary to the world's way of doing things. Satan is the prince of the power of the air. Jesus said this is NOT His kingdom, so we have spirit filled human beings doing the will of God in a world where the power of the evil one is all around us.
---Donna9759 on 9/20/06

I would find it difficult NOT to be a Christian in today's society!
There are too many 'ifs' in this world, thank God HE will direct our paths if we just listen to Him! Our 'life's guidebook', the bible, spells out for us how we should live and get through difficult times and rejoice that our Savior left us His perfect plan for life. I can turn my head from evil by the strength of the Holy Spirit that lives in me.

greetings,on a larger scale, why is it so hard today to be in a society of christians?
---earl on 9/20/06

Because too many people are straddling the fence of good and evil. If a person walked with God half of the time, of course the walk is hard.
---Rebecca_D on 9/20/06

It would be far harder on you to not be a Christian because you would be reaping the benefits of the flesh instead of the Spirit. Even Paul had difficulty. He did the things he wasn't supposed to do and didn't do the things he was supposed to do. But It's still easier to live for God than for the devil.
