The thing I dont understand is why did the devil think he could go against God and win? I mean, he must have known that God would win in the end, didn't he?

His pride blinded him just like it can blind us. He is not dumb but crafty and always on the prowl since he has "studied" us since the beginning. But we are not to "fear" him God is greater but we are to realize he is our foe.

We are to be "wise as SERPENTS and harmless as doves." Serpents are intype Devils. I believe he isn't smarter than God but He's a lot more intelligent than you and me! He's just so greedy it gets the best of him.

My former preacher once said that Satan was brilliantly stupid. Maybe so.
---Kay on 11/1/06

Lucifer was "a son of the morning" who sought to elevate himself above God.

His followers today elevate themselves above God to the extent that they think God cannot or will not do all that he has said he will do.

Followers pick and choose their favourite doctrines and then find a Church which fits. If none exists, they start one in their own image and name.

God bless.

Satan is very intelligent. He first fell because of pride. Now he is trying to destroy God's creation, to bring as many people to hell with him. During the OT, he tried to break the chain of events leading to the birth of Christ (obviously without success). Today he has only a very short time left to get as many people against God as possible, doing everything in his power to do so. And he will even fool even the elect, if that were possible.

I don't think Satan WAS really convinced that God would win in the end. He's not stupid, but he IS the ultimate egotist! And every person he succeeds in diverting and distracting from the Lord reinforces his delusion of supreme power.

I would say he is very crafty in a evil perverted way. Look at most Christian's, he has convinced them that they can't even live holy through Christ Jesus, they are instantly defeated. Christian's need to stop talking about how stupid he is,and how they can "out smart him", and "take heed"(1 Corinthians 10:12) , lest they fall to his vices! Only the one's who "continually walk in the Spirit" are alert to his Deceit.

You would have to be dumb to think you can be God. First of all we are all made from him so therefore we can not be him. Satan has to seduce, and entice people to be with him. Lets face it he is such an arrogant jerk who would like to spend lots of time with him.
---Ali on 10/9/06

In other words god does not need to seduce or entice people to be with him. They come to him in faith, and love. There is a saying curiosity killed the cat.

Is it any different today, the "devil" in man still thinks it can go against God and win.. satan thought he was as great or greater than God and knew better than Him...if satan had thought God would win, he would not have bothered with this power play..he wanted to win, but Jesus is, was, and will be the ultimate winner...

THANK YOU for replies. I was wondering maybe the devil HATES God so much that he feels the more people he can win over to hell, the better he feels. Even though he knows he will loose in the end, at least he hurt God by getting some of His people? He wants to hurt God, make him cry?

Maybe Satan thinks that when a person gives his will to Satan, and thereby loses Heaven, Man is giving Evil some kind of victory. As evidenced in Genesis, Satan knows God will not interfere with the gift of free will he gave mankind. All this being so, Satan is still dumb, but Man is dumber.

Excellent answers here!!! In my 23 years of walking with the Lord, I have come up with a saying and have had to tell people, "The devil has no wisdom." He may be cunning, and lies to people, deceives them, but he still has NO wisdom. Give him enough rope and he will eventually hang himself. I've seen people do really stupid things and then God stepped in and they got caught. OOOppsss, satan forgot God is more powerful than he is.

Why do Christians go against God's Word and His Will, don't they know they can't win? Of course, but just like Satan lusted for power, they let their lust lead them into their downfall of sin. It is the lust to control and rebellion against surrender to God's Will which makes man and Satan get so puffed up they are blinded to the truth and think they can outsmart God. They have failed before they even begin.

That's the thing about Pride, you think you can cause you're so great. It's a false sense of confidence in something that is bound to falter sooner or later. He probably honestly believed that he could be greater than God, because he thought himself to be so great. And being he isn't all-knowing, how could he know he would lose?

Sue, your questions are real, without hidden agendas. I used to wonder if the devil would repent, would God take him back. Answer is No. He is consumed with pride. He is pride. The devil knows the Word of God, but thinks he's flying under the radar. God has His eye on him at all times, watching.

"why did the devil think he could go against God and win?"
Answer. Pride. He obviously thought more highly of himself than he should have & stubborn haughtiness is most likely the reason he will not repent.
He is the perfect example of how to take oneself completely out of fellowship with the Father, & to secure ones own destruction.
Pride comes before a fall & a haughty spirit before destruction.
---joseph on 9/30/06

I think when pride entered him it crippled his ability to reason.
---Tbabe on 9/29/06

We are about as dumb as the devil too if we go against God because we won't win either.
---john on 9/29/06

"I saw satan fall like lightning from heaven." Jesus said in Lk 10:18 God created him as an angel. But pride caused him to exalt himself above God. With the measure of knowledge he was given, pride motivates him. He knows his end. "Hell from beneath is excited about you, to meet you at your coming; it stirs up the dead for you.." Isa 14:9 "Yet you shall be brought down to Sheol, to the lowest depths of the Pit." Isa 14:15

The traditional explanation is that Lucifer was intelligent enough to forsee the eternal consequences of his rebellion--and chose to rebel anyway.
We do not forsee the long-term and even eternal consequences of our actions.
---Jack on 9/29/06

Well he must of thought in his mind that he could win or otherwise wouldn't have went against him. Satan is smart, coniving, but he isn't more powerful than God. Satan gets to God by getting to his people. Play mind games with them, and leaving them confused. Satan is doing everything he can against God through different people because he knows his days are getting shorter.
