In our home we didn't celebrate this holiday because the whole focus is on evil spirits or the dead. Instead, when our daughter was young, we'd choose a different date entirely & have a costume party of Godly things. Your favorite Bible character or your favorite president or first lady, etc. You can start your own traditions & have memories that will be so much fun & educational as well. The children would have a contest to see if they could guess the character you dressed as.You had one fact that you shared to give a hint. It was always a party they looked forward to.

I collect fairies so I will be a fairy this year with blue wings and hair and a blue "wand" that is actually a duster lol :D

Nothing! Put away the candy, too and pray that Satan will be put out to pasture. Way, way, way out.

Deuteronomy 12:30 Take heed to thyself that thou be not snared by following them, after that they be destroyed from before thee, and that thou enquire not after their gods, saying, How did these nations serve their gods? even so will I do likewise.

Deuteronomy 12:31 Thou shalt not do so unto the LORD thy God: for every abomination to the LORD, which he hateth, have they done unto their gods, for even their sons and their daughters they have burnt in the fire to their gods.

Deuteronomy 12:32 What thing soever I command you, observe to do it: thou shalt not add thereto, nor diminish from it.

Pumpkin and angel outfits, are cute for children on Halloween. Characters that children love on tv and in the movies are nice. Or you can simply skip the outfits. Just paint the faces, use hats, masks and other props or use plain clothes with painted faces and so forth. Be creative. Kids don't care a lot. Usually adults make a bigger fuss about Halloween, than the kids. Kids like the candy and treats more. Be safe and have fun.

I believe we are all separated for a cause and we all know the cause is to preach the word of God. The problem with today's Christianity is that we are trying to win bodies for the church building rather than leading souls to God. We tend to be pleasing the flesh rather than allowing the spirit to convict it. We are using satanic practices "sanctifying" them in order for ALL including believers to partake in them because we might lose out on the fun. Fall Festival, Harvest parties Bible Character costume parties etc, they are all the same. We are putting a costume on the word of God so we can show the world that we believers can have fun. There are 365 days in the year and we choose Oct 31 to witness and evangelize?? how Ironic!!

let us assume that person has no knowledge of from where the date came, and genuinely beleives that this is REALLY the date Jesus was born.

Would you still consider that wrong?
peter3594 on 4/28/10

NO!

AS SCRIPTURE SAIDS...
"If they have NOT been told, they would not have sinned, but they were told and their sins are held against them".

His birth was definitely during the Harvest time, which is why Joseph could not find vacancy at any of the Inns. That is one of the busiest merchant season.
---John on 4/28/10

John: can I ask something else?

When someone uses Dec 25 for Jesus birth, let us assume that person has no knowledge of from where the date came, and genuinely beleives that this is REALLY the date Jesus was born.

Would you still consider that wrong?

Even I am unable to find an exact date (what you quote of early september is realistic, but I cannot be sure of an exact date, and some scholars have placed it in October - though september is more common)

PS Though I send some Christmas cards, my main holiday of the year is ressurection, assumption and pentecost (all of which can be correctly dated as the Bible lists when Passover is)
---peter3594 on 4/28/10

Peter you're right the feast was on the Winter Solstice. Which then was the 25th.

Halloween is a Celtic holiday. They would wear costumes to scare away the Wood Sprites they believed ran through their corn fields and ruin their crops. Similar to a scarecrows used by American farmers.

The holiday was a very innocent farmers day.
---John on 4/27/10

NONE! Christians shouldn't participate in Halloween. True christians wil llet it pass by as another day & pay no attention to it.
---candice on 4/27/10

John: Since you seem to be better informed, maybe I could also ask about 'halloween'.

The name is Christian (the evening before the days of all saints (all-hallowed-evening)

But the practices are not

Unlike you, I do not LIKE (whether it is a good idea or not) disposing of a holiday because the date is incorrect, but is there any validity to halloween (I do not celebrate it)
---peter3594 on 4/27/10

John: OK, what do you think of my way of calculating the actual date?

I accept that using a pagan holiday for God is a problem

I always though the holiday was midwinter (22 Dec), not the 25th

Am I wrong?
---peter3594 on 4/27/10

NO! It is the MOST offensive sin you can do to G-d.

Our G-d is a jealous G-d and does NOT share his Glory with pagan gods.

Remember Cain offerings?

Jesus was added on Dec 25th. as only one of many light gods of the Roman/Greek empire.

Do you think he should share his Glory equally with Jupiter and Zeus with pagan rituals of Dec 25th?

The Lord gave us the Passover to celebrate the Death and resurrection of Jesus Christ
Not Easter to celebrate the goddess Ister.

If you wish to celebrate His Birthday, then celebrate HIS birthday (Sukkoth)and no one elses.

As Scripture said....
In the end they will teach the Traditions of men as Doctrines of G-d . And he will indeed pass Judgment on them!!!
---John on 4/25/10

John: I have been checking the details (I am not, of course, an expert), and the date appears to begin from Luke, who says about John's father. There are some comments that this is assuming we know the date Gabriel appeard, and it appears to be the Day of Atonement. As there remain some uncertainties about the exact years, and the question of how many days Zacharias waited before returing home, and how long it took for his wife to concieve, there remain some uncertainties.

I know that Dec 25 is not the real date

The question is: although it WAS a pagan day, are we allowed to celebrate other things on that date?

We are only told not to if it was offerred to an idol - I don't think that is the case here

John: I'll run this by you, so we see how we take thing.
Starting with the day Gabriel appeared to Zechariah (I took it to be Yom Kippur, but not sure). Then five to six months ('is in the sixth month') until Mary's conception, then nine months pregnancy. Plus some extra days from the time in the temple to John's conception. This gives 14 to 15 months from the time in the temple. If it was Yom Kippur, it would be in the winter.

Have I made a mistake in my assumptions or calculations? Quite likely

I agree the date (25 December) is not correct.
---peter3594 on 4/24/10

Scholars have placed the date on 1st day of Sukkot. You would have to look up the research since I only have 125 words here.

I first became aware of this particular date from my History class in Seminary. I was previously aware He was born in Early Sept. Sometime during the "Days of Awe". When (according to Mosiac traditions)is when G-d opens the book of life and makes his final judgement. I had thought the day was Yom Kippur. But Sukkot is more Prophetic of Messiah.

I am a Pastor,a Rabbi, and a Theologian.
---John on 4/20/10

John, where do you get early september for Jesus' birth?
---peter3594 on 4/20/10

Peter, Dec25. is not abitruary.
It is the Holiest Pagan day of the year. It is the day the pagans worship all the gods of light. Jesus was added because they heard he was another god of light. They burn a Yule long all night as an effigy to the gods. They also bring in a evergreen tree in the house to keep th gods happy until spring. Only Easter is more evil and pagan. Worshipping the goddess of the rising sun Ister by having a Sunrise Service.

Both of these pagan holy day were decreed Christian by the Pagan Emperor Constantine (300AD).

Jesus was born in early Sept. in the Holy days of Sukkot. And was Crucified on Passover. Both of THESE day were decreed holy by G-d!!!

WHO DO YOU CHOOSE TO FOLLOW G-D OR CONSTANTINE???

John, I am not sure, but I would only take THE DATE (December 25) as pagan. As long as we konw that the date is wrong, and as we do not know the real date, I would take it as OK to use a day, whichever we choose, to remember the birth of Christ.
---peter3594 on 4/3/10

Well, since Halloween and Christmas are both Pagan Holy days. Chistmas being the more evil of the two.

I think it doesn't matter.
---John on 3/11/10

I have the impression that it is the night before 'All saints day' (November1) and the name is from 'hallowed' (respected, holy) and eve (evening). Why anyone bothers with the scary costumes I dont really understand - could it not be some nice costume?

Personally, I don't see the harm in Halloween. It's just a holiday where people could just unwind. However, I have seen people take things too far. As a resident of Las Vegas, and one who works in a casino, I see women who wear very skimpy costumes. I feel ashamed to admit this, but I kind of like it. If I had a girlfriend, I would not discourage her from dressing sexy for that one night of the year. People need to loosen up and not judge every single thing people do negatively.
---Lewis on 1/17/10

I am Christian and for Halloween I just spend the day at my church. we play board games, sing songs, dress up in sily costumes ( I always dress up as Princess leia from Star Wars) and I just have fun and treat the day like any other day
---Emy on 1/11/10

Halloween and christian?

The shame of it all is that adult christians do this, and say they do it for the children.
The bible never calls God's people do follow heathen beliefs in the name of " the children."

Deuteronomy 12:30 Take heed to thyself that thou be not snared by following them, after that they be destroyed from before thee, and that thou enquire not after their gods, saying, How did these nations serve their gods? even so will I do likewise.

What Nancy says is true. I disagree, however, that
//those of you who are putting on Harvest Fests are actually acting more Pagan than the treaters are.//
The Jews in Jesus' day had a holiday to celebrate the Harvest. It was called the feast of the Tabernacles.

This feast was designed (1) to be a memorial of the wilderness wanderings, when the people dwelt in booths (Lev. 23:43), and (2) to be a harvest thanksgiving (Neh. 8:9-18). It was a joyous holiday when families moved into outdoor "booths" decorated with seasonal fruits and vegetables. (No use for costumes, however)

Halloween became a holiday with the devil's help. It's Satan's favorite holiday. You don't like that disgusting rotten piece of evil filth do you? How would you like it if you were Jesus and you saw people dressed as witches, devils, and other sick creatures? You're wasting your whole day honoring and Satan. Even if you're dressing up as angels or whatever, you're still not changing the whole point of it and not the smallest you do to celebrate halloween is "innocent". God is boiling mad by this holiday, and it's more than just dressing up and getting candy. think about it. Don't be fooled. quit worshipping that ungodly virus known as the devil Satan. see my holy-ween reply as well for a new idea.
---Angel11 on 10/17/09

Hey! I have a new holiday idea. Holy-ween! Forget the candy and ungodly tricks. People can pass out mini bibles or inspiring scriptures on holy-ween. and evil costumes such as the devil won't be allowed. Nothing but angel, sheperd, lamb, and donkey costumes. No more scaryness in holy-ween. If you call yourself a Christian, spooky unrighteous stuff such as what happens on halloween and the point of it shouldn't come to your pleasure. and you should find this wise. I got this idea with the help of God. if you think you are righteous, you shoudn't be amused by evil fun. think about it. how can you say you love god if you're trashing him!! If you want fun, why can't it be righteous too?! With lots of help, maybe this can become a holiday.

---Betty on 10/15/09

As a kid growing up in a Traditional Baptist home in the deep South, born in 1957 all the kids everywhere were dressing up for halloween, it was just something fun to look forward to at the end of October. We would all have fun making our costumes not a lot to buy at that time, no different than making a dress for the prom, or planning a special date, it's all make believe!!! Mainly for Kids, a day to have fun walking around with every one else looking and laughing and sometimes yes a bit scary but we all new it was just make believe and we wanted to ring the door bell and get a re-action from who ever opened the door.

I am a christian, and ever since I was a child my family has taken part in Halloween. Now that Im an adult,I also take my children out.Its alot of fun,and it is not evil, unless you make it.Didnt anyone ever read about the complete origins of Halloween, and every other holiday for that matter?Do you know that christmas trees came from a pagan tradition?So...are you all going to stop buying christmas trees for your family? Are you going to stop celebrating Easter?Bc lying to your kids about Santa and the Easter Bunny seems worse than taking them out trick or treating to me.

FYI, Pagans don't believe in or worship the devil. (They don't believe in Jehovah, so they certainly don't believe in His Adversary.)

Samhain (the holiday some Pagans celebrate on Halloween) is actually a combination of a harvest festival and Memorial Day. So those of you who are putting on Harvest Fests are actually acting more Pagan than the treaters are.

As for tracts, it is illegal in some places to proselytize to minors. You could be arrested for passing them out.
---Nancy on 11/4/07

my cousin and i have always dressed up on halloween but we always go as a bible charter. our church even gets together and we have a hallujah party where we have a costume contest and a hunted house type thing we call a "journey through hell" and a few other activities so i think halloween is only as bad as you make it god is everywhere and the devil is everywhere its just a matter of where you look.

I have never ever allowed my kids to go door 2door begging..this halloween business is teaching our kids to beg and adults give them the worse food ever...candy..Our SDA church along with Church of Christ next door work together every year to keep our own kids off the streets on halloween by giving them heaps to do like barbeques, games etc..thousands of non church ones r begining 2join us also..

I do like to give candy to the kiddies. I also started giving gospel tracts to the kids several yrs ago. I put them in the bags along with the candy and other goodies. I don't put up the creepy decorations in my home anymore or outdoors in my yard. I sought the Lord on this a few years ago. Some of the churches have a party(treats, hot dogs) and movie time(christian movie) for the kids and adults. That is nice.

Valentines Day, New Years, Christimas, Thanksgiving, those are all pagan holidays just like Halloween. Do you think Christimas is about Jesus? It should be, but really no one knows when Jesus was born, this is a man-made holiday but yet we celerbrate it and buy gifts for other people. So how is it different than Halloween? Oh I know this is a holiday like Easter that people from all over come to church twice a year, acting like they are holier than thou.

mikeM, don't throw the baby out with the bath water. Not all holidays are of pagan origin. Christmas, Passover and Resurrrection Day, and Thanksgiving Day are all Holy days. And after the new age from the second establishment of Zion, there will be another great Holiday celebration established for all the earth, in the fall from October 15 through October 22 called the Feast of Tabernacles or Ingathering.
---Eloy on 10/14/06

Any holiday created by man that will glorify God is acceptable. Halloween definately does not glorify God even if you try to substitute the Harvest moon. Christmas does not glorify God because it teach children to lie. "Yes, my child, Santa Claus will bring you toys if you be good" teaches a child not only to lie but to be rewarded by a fictitious character.
---Steveng on 10/14/06

MikeM, while you may be testing there, I somewhat agree. BUT, there are some days our society has set aside to celebrate truely Christian events. Unfortunately the secular or pagan events Constantine merged together have (in too many cases) overshadowed the Christian event. Halloween was never a true Christian holiday nor was Thanksgiving. The difference there is Halloween was (and is) a satanic rites day. Any participation in that day reeks of compromise.
---mikefl on 10/14/06

People should come out of Christmas, It is not Christian. DEC 25 is the 'birthday of the unconquered sun' meaning Mithras. It has no relationsship to Jesus, only Constantine changed it. It was held 72 hours after the winter solstice, and was a time of parties, orgies, all pagan worship. The Xmas in gaul were the sight of evil rituals.

Halloween, Christmas, and all the other holidays.......

Besides, Scripture says to do everything for the glory of God. Can you honestly say, deep down within your heart, that Halloween glorifies God?

As for Harvest Parties, it's still associated with Halloween. It's a Halloween substitute, making children believe that they are missing out on something.

And woe unto anyone who teaches children to sin.

Haloween is not a Christian season or festival... in fact it is distinctly unChristian.

I can't think of any halloween costumes for Christians. It is NOT a Christian holiday. If someone wants to observe it just admit it is a pagan holiday and research where it came from then ignore the Bible and have at it. You can not make something that has been sacrificed to idols into Christ. Read the Book.
---mikefl on 10/10/06

Just because everyone is doing it, it doesn't mean it's right. You may think putting on a costume of Moses will make things good, but I tell you that in the mind it is still a frightful night. Most children (teens and Adults) will still dress up as ghosts and goblins. Halloween is catching up to Christmas as the most celebrated holiday. And consider the Ouija board, it's still a game, right? But there are a few that end up in a mental institution because of it.

Satan, in his increasing arsenal of God denying games, is happy when just one person turns his back on God or starts to question His Word. He must be doing cartwheels upon the tips of the flames of Hell and crying out in hysterical joy when a small percentage of people who are Christians are disobeying God's command that we should not partake that which is evil - or even the appearance of it.
---Steveng on 10/10/06

Mixing Christ with worldly religions can be disastrous. God warned us about mixing his doctrine with pagan doctrine. Even if you use the pagan event (such as Halloween) as a witnessing opportunity by giving out tracts or crosses in their bags, you are mixing no matter how noble your cause. You encourage kids to dress up in costumes or indulge in foods not right for our bodies. Why not practice yoga in church, isn't yoga good for your body? Let's all breathe in the Holy Spirit.
