American Church Is Lifeless

Why does the church in America seem so lifeless? Why are we so indifferent to the world around us? Why aren't most American Christians willing to live out the great commission?

Moderator - The American church is Lukewarm and moving toward being apostate.

All believers have been called to be spreaders of the word of God, despite the fact that not every person has been "called" to function in the Body of Christ as a "spiritual" preacher, teacher, prophet, apostle, and so forth. That's right! You guessed it! We are all evangelists who spread the Gospel the BEST way that it should be increased throughout this world, which is by showing this world the holy and righteous kind of life that unbelievers should seek to live--our godly witness (light/salt) should influence this dark and unwholesome world so that people will want to be like the Jesus in us.

Catherine, you are right in the sense that not all are called to be "Pulpit Preachers, ect" But, we are all called to orally testify God's Word.
By not doing so it allows all of the foolish things we are speaking of now.
A Godly mother must speak (preach) the Word of God to her Children. If she doesn't she has not raised them correctly.
Preaching is the telling of God's Word. That is all. Then our life must be in obedience to the Word.
---Elder on 6/26/08

The great commission>>ofcourse, is, whatever your calling may be. Not everyone is called to preach. Some are called into being a godly mother and wife, Which is extrememly important.

Some not all churches are Apostate. But, what does Apostate mean? Many use the word but have no idea what it means.
There could not be any "successful" corrupt bishops, pastors and so on if the people in the pews would learn God's Word and live by it.
"Catching fire" has to do with Obedience. We debate tithing, baptizing, churches and pastors yet stay disobedient.
The only 4 letter word that cannot be used in church today is OBEY. Our duty is to know and Obey the Word. Until then the Church will remain stagnant and ineffective.
An Apostate is someone who has received "Light" but not "Life." They know what the Word says but they have no life from it. They are Lost not Saved.
---Elder on 6/26/08

Good question, our churches are apostate right now. So much doubt an unbelief has been heaped on the churches that they, being politically correct, have totally lost their way. The great commission is a foreign idea to the majority of churches. We you and I can seek a remedy for this by ourselves practicing the great commission. Another words we should be soulwinners. While there is a multitude of activities in the churches. There is very little Soulwinning going on, in fact, most churches have no idea how to go about Soulwinning. A Presbyterian preacher named Kennedy had very good ideas about this. You could look him up (James P. or P. James Kennedy) on the Internet.

I do agree with Ryan's #1 post. So many corrupt bishops, pastors etc...looking to make a living off of the church instead of doing what they say they were called to do, and that is: to show love to their flocks (others) They are sadly lacking in this area, which is so important. They are blinded by money signs these days. Its hard to lead when your main occupation is getting rich.Somebody and something is going to be neglected. The church is suffering, badly.

Church has become commoditized. Spontaneous praise out of uniform. Keep the money. Spend it another way. Feed people. Pay a utility bill. buy them food. Raise your hands in praise to God, when moved by His Spirit. The block building you're going to is meaningless.
---Michael on 6/25/08

The church does seem like it's dying, even with all of the programs for unity and oneness. Those churches are the most lifeless.

You will find hype there, with pomp and circumstance. A great deal of busy activity, but you won't find the anointing.
They're as dead as a doornail.

Activity, works, busy bee syndrome...programs for the bored out of their minds....not much gospel but a whole lotta activity going on.

Donna, thanks for the response. I like the way you look at the situation.
Sometimes I look at how big the problem is and I get overwhelmed.
I just wish the church in America would catch fire again. I mean REALLY catch fire again; not just have a short revival and then go back to living the way they used to.
---Jess on 6/25/08

If you read Revelation chapter 3:14-22, I believe that many of the Churches in America are as the Church of Laodicea, LUKEWARM. Too much of the world has gotten into a lot of our Churches today, and as the moderator pointed out, many are moving toward apostate. Look at what some of our Churches are accepting today. Many traditions and beliefs of this world are slowly creeping into our Churches in America. It is sad but true.

Most people go to church to find God or get ministered to, I've learned that if I seek God the other 6 days a week, study His word, fill myself up with Spirit and Life, that I can bring God with me to church and minister to people there that need it. It's just a new way I've been approaching church.
---Donna9759 on 9/27/07

Because church services in America are man-led NOT Holy Spirit-led. Gotta have control you know!
---Crystal on 10/19/06

Jess, you are right it is very sad, and I apologize for my misunderstanding of your original question. It is hard to get people to listen to the "real truth". I guess what I was trying to convey was that we have to be active in making those changes. As great as I think our pastor is he needs to get more to the Heart of our Spiritual being, and not just to our ears. May God Bless you all.
---Dottie on 10/19/06

I would say that most mainline protestant denominations churches are doing an excellent job of presenting the gospel, making it relevant to people in the 21st century as well as responding to the social issues of the day. Which is more than I can say for most of the independent churches.
---Phil_the_Elder on 10/19/06

I would say it has to do with which ministry is being brought forth~~the ministry of condemnation which brings death or the ministry of the Spirit which brings life.
---Linda6563 on 10/18/06

THE reason for this lifelessness is because, the men behind the pulpit won't make a stand for Christ. most sermons are warm (((fuzzy))) "this church wants you to enjoy yourselves." I dare any preacher to address the congregation with "you brood of vipers, who has warned you of the wrath to come!"
the next time I am asked preach I will be issuing that challenge, I promise you that I will never be asked back. why because the church wants vagueness not the Word of GOD.

Christians, remember you are the "CHURCH" not where attended ,although, it's called church. How Christian lives every day reflects in church services-winning souls. It is up to us to be prepared by reading the Bible everyday, praying without ceasing, and praising God all the time. It also makes a difference if Christian has special prayer and praise at home before they attend church,God only moves according to how people allow Him . We reap what we sow, spiritual things for spiritual ways.

You know guys, I am just sad by the church in whole, that's all.
I am not trying to be "authoritative" I am just voicing my frustration by what I have seen. I see too many Christians just willing to go to church one day a week and then returning back to their old lifestyles. I wish I saw the passion, faith, and unity in the church of America like I have seen and read about from nations that are under persecution.
---jess on 10/18/06

AMEN Ryan! I agree! We do need to point people to maturity and teach them to be disciples.
---jess on 10/18/06

(I.)Moderator, You said "moving toward being apostate" , now that's an understatement! Most churches are already there, like ninety some percent! It's not God's fault, they let the darkness of false doctrine seep in, deciding that God's Truth wasn't what they "wanted to hear", so they dont, they have turned their back on God yet still claim salvation. They are "ever learning, but never able to come to the knowledge of the TRUTH"( II Timothy 3:7)...

(II.)...because they reject God's Saving Truth with such VIGOR which comes from Satan, so one day God will do this "...I also will laugh at your calamity ; I will mock when your fear cometh..."(Proverbs 1:26-28), Why will God do this? Because they "....hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD:They would none of my counsel:they despised all my reproof. Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way,and be filled with their own devices."(Proverbs 1:29-31)
---Mrs._Morgan on 10/18/06

(III.)Those being taught wrong, still have "a choice", no excuses are accepted by Almighty God. God is Love, but despises disobedience/rebellion, lies/half-Truths, hypocrisy. Some say things that are Biblical, then they turn around and say something that is totally of the anti-Christ, how can darkness mix with LIGHT? The enemy is very subtle(Genesis 3:1), and has deceived many with his subtleness, Christian's must allow the Holy Spirit to discern for them and through them!
---Mrs._Morgan on 10/18/06

#1 Unfortunately many Christians get stuck at the foot of the cross and never press on to maturity. The men in positions of pastors, elders, overseers and bishops do not understand the biblical definition of their positions and because of their ignorance they fail in their positions.
---Ryan on 10/18/06

#2 A major problem is, many churches do not judge those within the congregations and that allows immoral, drunk, idolatrous, lisivious people to pollute the local bodies. There is not discipleship within our local churches and many churches teach denominational doctrine over the Word of God.

I don't have room to go into detail, but my family and I moved 8 hours away from home so my husband could be a minister, there have been other sacrifices too. We are not being idle in the church.
I am speaking about lack of passion. I do realize that there are passionate people here in America, but the church in whole is lifeless compared to over in China, Iran, or India. As a whole, we are too comfortable with our lifestyle that we are not willing to step out and take risks for Christ.
---jess on 10/18/06

I like Donna's answer.
---mima on 10/18/06

** Why does the church in America seem so lifeless?**

Why do you say that?

What are your standards of liveliness? BCV, please.
---Jack on 10/18/06

Jess, how can you speak with such authority, have you been to all of the churches in America. And assuming that "we" are so "indifferent" to the world around us? Maybe the question is, Why aren't "you" doing anything to energize your church, and inform members of "your" church of what is going on in the world. Changes always start with one person, you can be that person in your church. Don't ever wait for someone else to do what you may have the passion to do.

Americans have so much. People are dying on the borders to come here. The world looks upon our wealth, prosperity. It's a bittersweet privilege. Gathering up more prosperity is a national pastime. The love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. Rachel^^^
