By Word Or By Action
My brother-in-law says he knows the Bible word for word. He thinks that is all he needs to know. I think that if you know the Bible word for word, but don't live by it or share it with others you will not get a free pass to Heaven nor can you recieve God's Blessings. What do you think?

I believe one can have every Scripture in the Bible memorized and still not know the Christ of the Word. Christianity never has been about knowing the Bible word for word. It has been about knowing the Author of it.

If he is a believe in Jesus and lives in the faith of that belief then there is salvation.

Jesus spoke to some people who felt the way your brother in law does.
John 5:39, "Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me."

It is good that he knows the bible from kiver to kiver, but does he understand what he read? There isn't a person alive that understands all of the bible. we got to live by the word of God, and plus we need to share it with others. but if anyone don't abide in his word, than we won't go to heaven. Just because a person knows the bible from Genesis to Revelation, that just means they know it, but so doesn't Satan.

Your right. Encourage him... (knowing scripture is a start.) Don't discourage or push him away. Ask what God has brought to light. Help him to see what it is in Gods word he believes. You have a fish to catch. Pray for revelation- God show him he has to believe - what we believe about anything, we put into action. Ask what scriptures he likes to meditate on? Always encourage him. Tell him a favorit scripture you like and why. Lead him to the true light.

Ask your brother in law if he knows the author of the Bible...God. If he says yes, then ask him "do you obey God's word to the tee?" If he says yes, ask him "whom have you forgiven lately? have you turned the other cheek lately? Ask him to tell you HOW he's going to make it to heaven? Ask: What is the one way you get to heaven? If he fails to answer that correctly, tell him he needs to study it some more to find out the correct answer.

"You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only." - James 2:24
"Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead." - James 2:17
"For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also." - James 2:26

If your brother-in-law's knowledge of the Bible has led him to become a born-again believer he will certainly go to heaven. If he has not become a born-again believer no amount of knowledge, good works or action will gain him entrance.
