One would hope that being Christian would be synonomous with being decent - unfortunately that is not always so. But our ultimate goal is not a peaceful earthly life (even though that would be nice), but rather an eternity with God in Heaven.

If the whole world followed the Ten Commandments and especially Jesus's simplified two-fer. The world would be a wonderful place full of decent people and peace.

You have a point. If we actually learn the positive lessons Jesus and the Bible teach us, we should be able to apply them to our daily lives using the faculty of reason that God gave us, AND create a good outcome for ourselves, families and society.
---matthew on 10/17/07

We don't live in a peaceful society. We are at war. Without scripture, we cannot love as Jesus loves us. Jesus is our freedom. Jesus is our only assurance of peace. Jesus overcomes the world. Our faith in Jesus brings us victory. Without scripture, there is no victory today. It is Jesus, the Word, that is holding this world together, from flying apart, and turning on its' axis. We confess Jesus, quote His Words, because Jesus' perfect love gives us boldness in the day judgment. John 1:1 1 John Ch 4,5

#3 She goes in annually for check-ups not knowing if CA has returned or not. We pray about these tests. She has a peace all the time to draw on in Christ that she didn't have before. She knows the difference having Him live in her all the time has made in her life. Yes, we should share in love. I love her, & I am glad I came to know Christ myself to be able to share Him, through the Word of God, with her. I am sure you are a decent person as my friend is. But, goodness is not the way to eternal life.
---Linda on 11/2/06

#4 The only way to eternal life is without any works of our flesh ie. nothing that we can do of ourselves to enter into God's presence. We must come through Jesus alone without any merit on our part. God provided Him for the payment of your sin debt. God draws you unto Himself by the Holy Spirit, but you choose to say "yes" and confess your sin, repent of it, believe on Jesus' blood alone for cleansing & accept by faith that Jesus' sacrifice is sufficient for your salvation. Eph. 2:8

Catherine, your question hits the nail on the head. This is why Jesus gave us the beatitudes, why he taught us that we must love our neighbour as ourselves. If we do not do this, we antagonise people.

I think your second sentence goes to prove that there is a lot we all need to learn. It proves that we who call ourselves Christian are not always perfect.

#5 This is the "what else" that is needed by an individual. Christ is the Prince of Peace until he rules during the Millenium there will be no peace on earth. Matt. 10:34,John 14:27. The Scriptures are our "text book" that we learn from as Jesus told us to gain wisdom from His Word. If we do not know & speak Truth from the Word, then we are only speaking from this world's and our own point of view. That is why I read & quote scripture. I hope this has helped you :-)

#1 Catherine, I have a very dear friend who is attends the Catholic church. I know when I met her, she had very little knowledge of the Bible as she was in the era when they were not encouraged to read Bible for themselves. When I became a Christian, I was studying the Word diligently, and as I would talk with her & show her scripture, she would marvel at what was before her. She has battled CA for many years.
---Linda on 11/1/06

#2 Her last radiation treatment, she was told she would only be able to have one more if the CA returned. During the isolation time after treatment, the fear of death & not knowing for sure that she had been a good, worthy Catholic who had done all she could to get to heaven, she was terrified. Because I had told her how I became a Christian & the peace I had knowing I was & would be with Jesus always, she asked Him into her heart.
---Linda on 11/1/06

#2 When she left the hospital & I talked with her, she described the "black fear", she called it, & told me she'd accepted Jesus as Saviour. Because she is the only one in her family who has accepted Christ alone & not works, she still attends the church with her husband. She has joyfully shared Christ with women whom she knows who have CA. She attends a non-denominational Bible Study & has learned so much God's applied in her life.

I'm most grateful to all those who gave their unique opinions so freely, it was uplifting to know people do listen, I did have one problem however, trying to decipher the continual bickering, arrogance and disagreement. I favor the process of learning but not with vanity. My Catholic backround and beliefs are valid if I am true to them, just as are yours. Do we not learn each day we live, and is it more easily absorbed if given in love?
---Catherine on 11/1/06

Cathreine - The whole of man's problem is sin. Man has nothing good in himself. That is why Jesus Christ had to come into this world, take on human flesh and die on the Cross as the Sacrifice for sin. Society is far from peaceful. It is deteriorating daily and will get worse until Jesus comes back.
---Helen_5378 on 11/1/06

#1) Catherine, everyone here gave excellent and truthful answers. I would like to add that we quote scriptures because God said so. "Man does not live by bread alone, but by EVERY word that comes out of the mouth of God." This is God's earth, He created it, He gave us the guidelines to live by, and we choose to OBEY him. We are not decent human beings, "All have sinned and fell short of the glory of God," including you and me.
---Donna9759 on 10/30/06

#2)You need Jesus as your Lord and Savior to save you from the wrath of God and from going to hell. Don't you want to go to heaven when you die? Then follow Jesus. Get Baptized in the Holy Spirit and live a life of victory. We are not of this world, we are born again into HIS kingdom. God has taken Christians out of darkness and into His light. The world is full of murderers, liars, rapists, abusers, adulterers, but God's Kingdom is Righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Ghost.
---Donna9759 on 10/30/06

Tommy, I understand what you say but, unfortunately, Norma did not say 'we would be capable of' she actually said 'we would be and that is a huge difference. I accept though that she probably meant it the way you have phrased it.
---emg on 10/30/06

Norma ... You said "If we were not Christians we would be murderers, rapists, abusers, adulturers, etc"
In your 40 years or so before you were a Christian, were you ever tempted to be any of those things? Were you utterly depraved, as some Christians will insist.
In a way, I wish I had had this utterly depraved time in my preChristian life, I at least then would have a mighty testimony of vastly changed life style and behaviour.

Are you a mormon? There is no salvation without Jesus Christ. All have sinned and fallen short of God's glory.
---ralph on 10/29/06

Alan, I did not mean to imply that you were any of these things. By not being a Christian we are capable of doing things because Satan works over time in tempting us to do wrong. I was not a practicing Christian for the first 30-40 years and my life was not exemplary, but when I decided to turn back to the Lord I changed and my life is so much better now.
---Norma7374 on 10/29/06

Norma's comments are correct, in the manner in which they are meant. All people, without Christ, are CAPABLE of these and many other atrocities. All sin is horrible to God, even telling those little white lies. Our need is to measure up to God's standards, not man's idea of what God's standard should be.
---tommy3007 on 10/29/06

norma ... Before I became a Christian, I was not a murderer, nor a rapist, nor a fornicator, nor a gambler, nor a thief, nor a drunk, nor a druggie, nor a liar, nor a teller of dirty jokes, nor a bully, nor a tale-teller, nor a reckless cyclist, nor a glutton, nor a schemer, nor a skyver.
I was as emg says, a bore, like most non-Christians of my acquaintance.

Christianity is not about being "nice" or "decent"; it's about being made new.

C. S. Lewis, whom I am paraphrasing here (rather than quoting scripture), goes into this in MERE CHRISTIANITY.

And just what would you have Christians quote? The Koran? The Lotus Sutra?
---Jack on 10/29/06

Cathreine, it is because we believe the words of the bible. Anyone who does not, and I assume that includes you, cannot possibly understand why it is so important to us. Unless we can back up what we say with scripture we might just as well not say it. This is a Christian website, pure and simple. People can take it or leave it but I hope you'll stay with us and start to read the bible for yourself. There is an awful lot in there for you to learn.
---emg on 10/29/06

Norma I disagree with your words "If we were not Christians we would be murderers, rapists, abusers, adulturers, etc." Most of us who are now Christians did not do these things prior to being saved. Some of us actually have quite 'boring' testimonies to give compared with those who were saved from a horrendous lifestyle. The majority of non-Christians don't do them either and many actually consider themselves to be Christians simply because they do not do them.
---emg on 10/29/06

Contributing to a peaceful society is not what we need to do. To be holy (without sin) is what is necessary. Our whole lives must be given over to being without sin - thinking, speaking and doing what is right, just and holy. The only way that we can do this is with help, because, in and of ourselves, this is impossible. We always trip up. God, who gave us the Bible as our manual for this kind of living, gives us this help through Jesus Christ, and Him alone.

What is the value of a "peaceful society"? All the world wants peaceful societies. Our nation wants one, who doesn't? As long as we are human, there will be greed, lust, distrust, envy, etc. Only a pure Creator of life can be just. We quote scripture because of who we want to be, who we trust in for ever. Besides, this is a Christian site. That's what believers in God do, quote His word so we reenforce it to ourselves and others because God's word is Peace.
---mikefl on 10/28/06

What else is needed? CALVARY! No matter how "so called" decent, peaceful one is, if they don't have the divine Blood of Jesus flowing/working in their life, their soul(salvation) they stand before God naked and shame. Many "nice" people are in hell right now, including Christian's because they only had a "false form of Calvary" a "false form of Jesus"(the devil has his counterfeit's), which is REJECTED by God.
---Mrs._Morgan on 10/28/06

If we were not Christians we would be murderers, rapists, abusers, adulturers, etc. It's not just enough to be good we need the love of the Lord in our hearts in order to do what is right. We quote scriptures to back up our beliefs and to show people that the answers to any questions are in the Bible.
---Norma7374 on 10/28/06

I think Catherine does not recognise that God exists, nor that God has rules, nor that we need to have faith in Jesus in order to "go to heaven" (whatever that may exactly mean)
Catherine we believe in God and Jesus and relaise that scriptures tell us about them, and how to live

God has given us the scripture to quote, are you displeased with what God has given us in scripture? I quote Scripture because my opinions are worthless alongside inspired Word of God.
---mima on 10/28/06

What is needed? How about the blood of Jesus Christ? Because it is out of the mouth of God! That is why we quote scriptures. It's great that one is a decent human being, but without the blood of the Lamb, your not one of God's. I know some wonderful people, who would do almost anything they could for me, but they are sinners. Even though they are good people, they are not one of God's, and no matter how hard they try to be good, they're not going to heaven without the blood.
---Rebecca_D on 10/28/06

Catherine: Scriptures are the Truth by which we live. It is the basis for our relationship with God and for our behavior in life. Without scripture, we have no compass by which to live.
---Madison1101 on 10/28/06

What is needed is the one thing that will not be taken away~~true worship in Spirit and in truth through Jesus Christ. Re: a peaceful society~~Jesus didn't come to make society peaceful. He came to establish His kingdom in the earth through His righteousness, redemption, and reign. As a matter of fact, the darker the world becomes, the more light arises on the Church. The Author of true Peace is Christ. He is our Peace with God and with man.

Apart from His person and His provision (the cross), there is no access to the Father. God never created a human. He made a man. A human is a "hewn down" man, which is what Adam became when he fell. No man issuing from Adam, which is degenerate seed, can hold a modicum of the peace the world gives for very long. Eventually his heart will tell on him and that peace will fail when the circumstances aren't favorable. Peace of mind may come and go, but the mind of Peace never fails.
---Linda6563 on 10/28/06

It's not enough to be a decent human being if you know Christ and reject Him. Some of the things talked about here don't matter. Fortunately for all of us God has more mercy then we show here.
---grace3869 on 10/28/06

God is needed. People seem so intent on leaving Him out. We by no means live in a peacefull society. We have kids being abused, kids killing other kids, people sleep with each other without giving it a second thought, diseases run rampant, war is everywhere, not just in Iraq. God matters, His word matters, more than matters, it is needed.
---bethie on 10/28/06

You can be the most decent person in the world and still go to hell if you are not born again. You must repent and accept Christ as your personal savior or you as a decent person will burn in hell with the worst of sinners.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God.
Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God.
Jesus is the Word.
Without Jesus you cannot love your brother.
Love has been perfected among us in this;
If someone says, "I love God," and hates his brother, he is a liar.
This commandment we have from Him; that he who loves God must love his brother also.
