God takes His heart and puts in His hand (five fold ministry) to build the house to reap the harvest. Such is the manifold grace of God.

*No one will question that question they will answer, I am Catholic or say I am christian they have no trouble telling the two apart. This in a society were about 87% of the people are Catholics.*

Whichever title either prefers is fine by me.

Acts 5:14
Believers were increasingly added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women.

1 Timothy 4:12
Let no one despise your youth, be an
example to the believers in word, conduct,
love,purity.

... be admonished by these... making many books there is no end, much study is wearisome to flesh.

For God will bring every work into judgment,
Including every secret thing,
Whether it is good or whether it is evil.

Eccl 12:11,12,14

2 Timothy 2:23-26 3:1-7

But avoid foolish and ignorant disputes, knowing that they generate strife.

A a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient,
in humility correcting those who are in
opposition, if God perhaps will grant them
repentance, so that they may know the truth,
and that they may come to their senses
and escape the snare of the devil........always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.

*When I was a Catholic, I called myself a Christian*

Donna, are you implying that Catholics aren't Christians?
---augua9846 on 12/15/06

Jim, I hear you. When I was a Catholic, I called myself a Christian. I haven't heard anyone yet call themselves a believer if they're not pentecostal or evangelical...that term believer I think stems from the prosperity message...I'm not sure though.
---Donna9759 on 12/15/06

Jim, i know but that is his role as a regular person of Christ, but when hes teaching hes got more duties than just that
---mark on 12/15/06

Donna,
There are alot of folks who would call themselves believers because they believe in God,but do not know Christ personally.
---JIM on 12/15/06

Jim, you raised a somewhat good point when you said: That's true with how many beleivers are there in church not saved.

Jim, if someone is in church and NOT saved, then they're not a believer, Right? So I think you're a bit confused.

I have heard my pastor say preaching has always been the greatest and the hardest task he has been given by God. Sharing God's word is great. Admonishing his people is hard. His most pleasure is in fellowship after church or at people's homes. His "other" work is what every shepherd should be doing. Keeping His sheep (24/7 when necessary). God's sheep aren't just the ones already in the flock... seeking them out is part of his job. Swinging a hammer or helping paint a bedroom has been done too.

mark...Apparently you do not understand. It is all christians who are to spread the good news.Win Souls. If that pastor is a follower of Christ...he is to bring souls to Jesus christ.
---JIM on 12/14/06

Haha...Jim...its not to save souls thats our jobs as the church people, the pastor helps equip the members of the church in whatever way he is gifted, then we are to go out and be the vessels of which jesus uses to save souls

A pastor should be a shepherd, defined in Webster's as "one who tends to, guides, guards his flock." I think it is clear that a pastor should be concerned for the overall well-being of the people in his congregation. He should tend to their needs, guide (instruct) them in the way of the Lord, and guard them against false teachings and/or teachers. Of course, this is it "in a nutsehll," and I'm sure different pastors are led by the Holy Spirit to minister in a variety of ways.
---Crystal on 12/14/06

Mima...let me rephrase that.I think that their work should include winning souls to Jesus Christ.
---JIM on 12/14/06

I'm not so sure I agree with a Pastor's job is to win souls, why? Because I once heard a preacher say, "get them saved, then bring them to church." How many unbelievers go to church to get saved?

A good Pastor is a good shepherd. The shepherd watches his flock and if one strays, he goes after that stray. A good Pastor takes care of his sheep day and night. It takes God to call a person to preach, and it takes a special person to take on a Pastor's job. Not just anyone can do this.
---Rebecca_D on 12/14/06

To Jim; Your answer to this post would come as a shocking surprise to many many pastors.
---Mima on 12/14/06

The word Pastor means Shepherd. Eph.4:11 says there are 5 ministry gifts for the perfecting of the saints for the work of the ministry until Jesus comes back. So, whatever falls into the category of shepherding is what he does. These days I see the Pastor operating in all 5 ministries and has charge of the church as the guy who runs the place. This is totally unscriptural.

To feed the sheep, to care for them, to look after their well-being, to instruct, to discipline in love, to lead and guide them into all truth. I'm not so sure I agree with a Pastor's job is to win souls, why? Because I once heard a preacher say, "get them saved, then bring them to church." How many unbelievers go to church to get saved? See my point? The church should be a hospital where we get healed, filled with the word, prayed for, and get sent out amoungst a lost and dying world.

they are to guide the people of the church into a deeper relationship with Christ. and to equip the people to evangilize their communities. those that think the pastor is to be the only evangilist need to remember that we are all called to share the good news and if we only rely on 1 person your church won't grow.

Ephesians 4:11-12, "And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:"

The word translated "perfecting" is from the Greek: katartismos - complete, furnishing, equipping.

So, those with the calling to ministry are to equip the saints for the work of ministry so that the body of Christ might be built up.

All of God's elect are to study the word. What satan & man have devised in the indoctrination centers today is an abomination. You do not mature spiritualy with a 45 minute sermon once a week. You must actively seek God through prayer and study. Biblicaly speaking pastors are assigned to shepherd the flock. What did a shepherd do? He watched the sheep, kept them safe and guided them. Pastors are no more important than any other bretheren & should not be elevated to the levels they are today.

It depends on the individual church. Some pastors counsel the church members, like marriage counseling or spiritual counseling. Some help run outreach ministries. Some help run soup kitchens. There are many different responsibilities for pastors.
