my brother in Christ the word says not to follow rules made by men so im not telling you what to do or what not just ask God because sometimes we have a tendency to give and make rules that have nothing to do with scripture and like the Lord said clean the inside of the cup first. just focus on Jesus then if God convicts you otherwise just do what he says. its relationship not religion i hope that helped. God bless

In Genesis 25 or 26 (forget which chapter), Abraham sent his servant as a matchmaker to find a wife for his son. When it was agreed that Rebecca would marry Isaac, she was given earrings (some translations say "noserings", could have been either) as an engagement gift.
I doubt very seriously these were clip-ons.

look at it this way. if it does not glorify the LORD it glorifies satan. nothing in between. if u are worried about weither or not it is a sin don't do it. if the lord said i want to see u today would u wear them to the meeting?

here u go realy repling to person who stated the "god" would made you with holes. god didn't make us clothed so should we not wear clothes by that definition lulz

if God wanted us to fly he would have given us wings,
if God wanted us in space he would have put us there,
that's a pretty weak argument trying to say God would have put holes in our ears

leviticus is the old law, you know, the one that condemns us to eternal death?
To defile the temple is this- if you let what you put into it, come out bad.
How does piercings have anything to do with you worshiping God?
Many men of God had piercings. David even wore makeup. What does that matter? Serve God with your ALL. Don't worry about what other people say. Worry about pleasing God.
If God convicts YOU and says don't wear them, then don't. But don't let man dictate to you what God wants. Listen to that still small voice that is God. Pray about it and God will answer.

I recently got my ear peirced (im a male by the way) and i struggled with the Leviticus verse (paraphrased) that says not to mark your body (pierce) or get tattoos. but you have to understand the context of the passage ([paraphrased] Colossians 3:18 how women are to submit to men... if you just pull that out and dont read the context then you could say men rule over women. Which of course isn't what that passage is trying to say... there is a reason God warned against marking your body and tattoos... back when he addressed His people.... I also plan to get tattoos of Ephesians 6:13 on my body, as a outward statement of my faith, with a silver (instead of gold) hoop on my left ear as a symbol of slavery to the True Master
---Tim on 8/27/08|
If women can have their ears pierced, so can men.
Just keep the jewelry tasteful. Small gold or silver studs or hoops would probably be best for church. Either that, or a small cross or fish dangle.
But nothing too noisy or bling-y. You don't want to be a distraction during the prayers.

Hi! My name is Tracy and I really don't think it is a sin for you to have your ear pierced. I have followed God's teaching most of my life and never heard of it to be a sin for a guy to have his ear pierced so I would keep them in.

For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet.
I know that the only piercings Christ had was for Calvery being the second Adam it was required for the redemption of our sins.
I don't see anyone lining up for them following Christ! but we line up following the world.

Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any [man] will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.
For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

I too am looking for somthing about piercings and tatoos. So far I have found that as a christian we must celebrate our bodys as christs temple, his dwelling place in our hearts. If we want to shine forth his grace and love we need to stay away from all earthly infuence. Jesus loves humbleness, simplicity, and purity.
Read about the pagans in scripture they all pierced their bodys and wore tatoos for thier different Gods. Good luck with your search. God Bless, Kim

Simon the question should be Why did you get your ears pierced? I have my eyebrow and ear pierced and my relationship with God is not dependant on my piercings but on whether I obey God. Piercings do not cause you to Sin. Your actions cause you to Sin or not.

YOU GO TO CHURCH ON SUNDAY???its a wonder you are adding more holes on your body..God said in Leviticus, dont put marks etc on your body..if you truly study the scriptures, then you will come to truly know and understand what God is telling you..It is a sin..yes..

StrongAxe: "...promote positive values such as honoring ones parents, loyalty, etc.?"
I sure hope you are joking. You promote positive values by defiling the temple of God? Is that how you would train up your child to do? Your child would say, "My mom and dad have tatoos/body piercings so I want one, too."
---Steveng on 3/14/08|
StrongAxe: "...Then, the distinction is not so clear."
The distinction is so clear that a child can understand it. Just don't do it, period.
---Steveng on 3/14/08|
While some tattoos may be clearly defiant or vulgar, how about tattoos of crosses, or Jesus, or ones like "Mom" or "Semper Fi" that promote positive values such as honoring ones parents, loyalty, etc.?
Then, the distinction is not so clear.
---StrongAxe on 3/13/08|
Why do you want an earing (or a tatoo for that matter)?
To glorify God or glorify yourself? Only people will be impressed (or revolted) by tatoos and body piercings. If God looks at the heart, why defile your body if not to impress others (in your clan). And if body piercings and tatoos are becoming popular in the world, are Christians not to be part of it? And since this is an on-going debate, wouldn't it be better not to have tatoos and body piercings just in case you are wrong?
---Steveng on 3/12/08|
Some things are sins by their very nature (like murder).
Some things are not sins, but if we believe they are wrong, we sin, not by doing THEM, but by being willing to violate our conscience.
Other things are not sins, but if we vow to avoid them, we break our vow by doing them.
In these last two cases, something may be a sin for us, but just for us - not for everyone else.
---StrongAxe on 3/11/08|
Tattoos and piercings were forbidden to the Jews, because they were customs practiced by surrounding nations.
So, you should avoid tattoos, piercings, shaving, pork, football, blended fabrics, etc. - IF you're an Orthodox Jew. Christians, however, are no longer slaves to the law, and such prohibitions don't apply to them.
---StrongAxe on 3/11/08|
When a servant chose to forebear freedom and remain a servant they put their ear to a doorpost and bored a hole through it with an awl. The earring upon the face is listed as a wedding ring for a bride. Both have deeper spiritual meanings as well.

Ebony: The bible is a history of God's people. Sometimes they were good and God rewarded them. Sometimes they were bad and God punished them. Just because it's written in the Bible, that doesn't mean it's good. Women were allowed to wear simple earings. It was a sign of a slave for a man to wear earings (in the Bible).
---Steveng on 3/10/08|
I got my ears pierced when I was 4 but stopped wearing earrings long before I became Christian. It says in the Bible that piercing is wrong, but then there are parts about a woman having her nose pierced and it was okay. So that confuses me. I think personal conviction plays a big role here.

I think that if you are being convicted of having the earrings, then you are sinning if you are not being obedient to the LORD by not taking them out. If you are not being convicted then I feel it is ok. (we know christians by the fruit they bear, not by the earrings, tattoos, or clothes they wear)

I dont think that the most important thing is having your ears pears or not. You should intead be focusing on the Lord words and your personal relationship with Jesus. By then the Holy Spirit will covince you of what is not from God in case you cant see a scripture in the Bible that specified it clearly such as ears pearcing. Bless you

i agree that it's not mens opinion that matters but God's. But what about our testimony, how do we reflect God through our lives, Apostle Paul mentioned that no one can judge our conciense but we should not allow other people to be stumble on the things that we do. Lastly, the bottom line is if you pierce your ears ask yourself what is my purpose, the bible says that in everything we do God should be glorified whether we eat or drink, so is piercing ears glorifying God or satisfying ourselves?
---arnel on 2/5/08|
Simon: The main thing is to make sure we are believing in the Lord Jesus Christ in the Biblical way in repentance, trusting entirely in Him and His sin-atoning work at the Cross for sinners. If you make that your priority (and maybe by God's grace you already have?) then other things will fall into place. Put personal faith in the Lord first in your life, and make His Word your daily guide.
Many young men keep little rings, studs, gems in their ears. You must decide how comfortable you feel.

Ex 21:6 Then his master shall bring him unto the judges, he shall also bring him to the door, or unto the door post, and his master shall bore his ear through with an aul, and he shall serve him for ever.
Since Jesus freed us from the slavery of sin, we are now his bondservants. How is it a sin, then, to have ears pierced and wearing earrings, such as a cross or other Christian symbol, symbolizing dedication to and serving of our new Master?
Quite a different perspective, don't ya think?
---Bobin on 1/10/08|
Ex 21:6 Then his master shall bring him unto the judges; he shall also bring him to the door, or unto the door post; and his master shall bore his ear through with an aul; and he shall serve him for ever.
Males with pierced ears were slaves. Since Jesus freed you from slavery to sin, would He now want you to wear any symbol of slavery?
If you decide to remove what is in your ears the holes will heal.

I agree with Rebecca D.It is not a matter of sin. How do you feel about the piercings? The bible states if our hearts condemn us, about a matter, then it is a sin. How do you feel about wearing the earrings to church? Serving God is not about our outward appearances, even though we should be modest in everything we do ,its about the condition of your heart. If you know you love Jesus with all of your heart and is a committed Christian, that's all that matters. Pray and ask God for guidance on this.
---robyn on 3/11/07|
Where does it stop? Isn't this a form of mutilation. If it's ok to pierce your ears 2,3,4 places, then we should not critize those who pierce eyelids, nose, lips, tongue, navel, and other private parts of the body. This may upset some people but, when you mark up your body with these piercings, paints and tattoos, do you honestly look like a person in a Holy walk with God. They look more like a walking advertisement for ignorance and stupidity, not Holiness and Purity.

1 Timothy 2:9 In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;
10 But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.
11 Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection.
12 But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.

Chipper; What I was trying to say is that what I believe to be a sin, others may not believe it that way. Somethings aren't a sin to others unltil God himself reveals it to them. I have a problem with Christians drinking, but it isn't my place to tell them it is wrong, if what their doing is wrong, God will show them. If that person doesn't listen then God will judge.
---Rebecca_D on 3/10/07|
Does that mean if one believes something is not sin, is it then not?
Someone once said, "sin is sin even if everybody is doing it, and righteousness is righteousness even if nobody is doing it".
It's really not a matter of what we think, it's "what saith the Lord"
Amos 3:3 Can two walk together, except (unless) they be agreed?
---Chipper on 3/10/07|
I hope that it isn't a sin because I have both my ears pierced too. The NT speaks of women seeking a more spiritual adornment, not jewels and make-up. This doesn't mean that those are sinful, but they can be if they take your attention away from God and living in a Christlike way. I wear earings to work because I was told that they were part of being well groomed in the work place, and sometimes to look good for my husband.
---lorra8574 on 3/10/07|
It is a sin if one believes it is a sin. I believe it is a sin for a Child of God to drink a strong drink (alochol) but to others it isn't a sin. Others believe it is a sin to smoke, I don't believe that. We agree to disagree. If we all agreed on every single thing, how can our conversations be interesting?

People, please read Isaiah 3:16 thru 26 and this may answer a lot of your questions about jewelry, earrings, nose and toe rings, ankle bracelets bracelets, chains, and changes of clothing and much more.
If God was not real happy with the ones doing this back then, how can we think He has changed His mind and says, "it's ok now, I've changed my mind"? NOT!
---Chipper on 3/9/07|
Today a kid in my chemistry class commented on the fact that i have earings. He knows that i am christain and he is not religous and told me i was not christain just because i have "cuts in my skin". I agree with the other posts, My relationship with God has nothing to do with having my ears pierced and frankly i do not believe that God will think any different of me. He loves me for my heart, not my appearance.

Yes, I believe God is more interested in the holes in your head, heart, and theology.
The holes that can't be seen with the naked eye.
The holes in your shoes, and ears won't cause you to stumble, but pharisees will. Go to church, God looks at your heart. He knows how to mend hearts and heads.

Hello Man of God,
I want to say that I strongly disagree with the religious folk who try to make us think that what our personality is has to be altered because of mans opinion.
My question to you is do you feel the presence of the Lord while you are in church or around the annoiting when you have your earring on?
A.Oh, I thought so because an earring has nothing to do with your relationship with God. 1st Samuel 16:7
---Pastor_Harris on 3/8/07|
I've read most of the posts on this page and am amazed at what some are saying about the piercing issue. I'm not a kid, I'm 63 years old,
and I think I have a good sense of what is proper. First, Paul tells us that by keeping of the law no one is made righteous. Righteousness comes by faith. Second, God looks at the heart, men look at the external.
God cares about your heart, not your ear or nose. Wake up, people - you're making a mountain out of a molehill!
---Rick on 3/3/07|
Simon, you are more guilty of breaking one of Gods law than wearing an earing. If you want to know if it is a sin to wear earings, I suggest u get your head in a good Bible like the KJV or the Good News Bible n study the Word of God well and understand it. Dont rely on others for your own salvation mate. Do it yourself. And u will be thankful to learn about Jesus.

We have a nature of making things suit ourselves, even scripture. Leviticus 19:28 tells not to make cuts on our bodies for the dead; nothing about piercing your ears! I am not a fan of men wearing earrings, However, that is only my opinion. Every man has to search the scripture and search out his own salvation. You just allow God to answer your questions through his word and tell man to read all the scripture before quoting it to you!!
---linda on 1/13/07|
I have another question. If its a sin for someone to pierce their ears. Why christian women used earrings? Or it is only a sin for women and not for men?
---charleen on 1/12/07|
** Read scriptures dear and do it well. Leviticus talks about marking and cutting your body/skin, God says dont do it.**
The matchmaker Abraham sent to find a wife for Isaac (note that love had nothing to do with it) gave her earrings as an engagement present, though some versions say "nose ring" (which wouldn't surprise me).
---Jack on 1/11/07|
Read scriptures dear and do it well. Leviticus talks about marking and cutting your body/skin, God says dont do it. Rmember our body is a temple for the Holy Spirit. God made us perfect and b.u.tful so why do u want to ruin what God gave u. RU not happy with what God gave you friend?
---lilly on 1/11/07|
Wow, this is ridiculous. Nobody here knows exactly what God wants or expects of us. There is nothing in the Bible that says anything against getting anything like a piercing or tattoo. Even if there is, there's no way to know which way to interpret it. Why don't we all stop worrying about God smiting us for stupid things like ear piercings, and start worshiping him, huh?
---Nate on 1/10/07|
There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. We are free in Christ, He fulfilled the law, we need only to die daily to ourselves and let His Spirit direct ours.

No Geof,I am talking about the 10 commandment Sabbath. Not the O/T Sacrificial Ceremonial n Sabbath Laws that are done away at the cross.

What it is, is a demonstration of the hypocritical attitude taken by those who insist we are to keep only select parts of the law. According to these people, the parts that we don't have to keep are usually the ones that are inconvenient to their life style.
---Bruce5656 on 1/8/07|
The other part they dont see fit to keep (which would be required to be kept if we were in fact under the law) is "legalistic." Well guess what, the law is legalistic.
Jesus never set aside the law or any of its requirements. He only condemned the hypocrisy of those who said one thing and did another. In other words, as per your example, while Jesus authorized an act of compassion on the Sabbath, i.e. healing
---Bruce5656 on 1/8/07|
someone, rescuing an animal etc, he was not dismissing all the laws associated with the Sabbath. Therefore your illustration of the ox in the ditch is not valid to authorize your breaking the Sabbath.
This of course was spoken to the Jews of his time who were indeed obligated to keep the Sabbath and all the law. This does not apply to us today.
---Bruce5656 on 1/8/07|
To pick and choose what laws are to be kept and what laws can be broken is totally inconsistent. That is why Paul said Galatians 5:3, "For I testify again to every man that is circumcised, that he is a debtor to do the whole law." In other words, if you are going keep the law of circumcision, you must keep them all.
---Bruce5656 on 1/8/07|
By the way, re: the ox in the ditch - If you ox falls in a ditch on the Sabbath, by all means get some friends to help you pull it out. If the ox falls in the ditch every Sabbath perhaps you should consider filling in the ditch or getting rid of the ox.
Romans 6:14, "For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace."
---Bruce5656 on 1/8/07|
This is the very problem Jesus was talking about in Math12 when the priests sought to catch disciples picking corn 2 eat in the fields on Sab. Just as your eating on Sab is also work however, we r so legalistic even in so silly things that Christ m sure abhors. If your animal fall in the hole on a sabb, will u retrive it if suffering bad? 2do good on Sab is ok just as Christ did, just as going 2 church on a car is. If u say illegal, then breathing on Sab must be 2.
---lucy on 1/8/07|
You still don't get it. You are saying that the OT law must be obeyed. (12/20/06) However you are being selective as to what laws you will obey personaly. The law stated that you could not light a fire on the sabbath and to drive your car is to do just that. Your car runs by burning gas. You turn the key, and you start a (controlled) fire to do the work of getting you from point A to point B. This is against the OT law.
---BRUCE5656 on 1/6/07|
|Read These Insightful Articles About Education
Some Orthodox Jews will not even turn on a light switch on Sabbath so as to not break the sabbath restrictions.
If you are going to hold someone to task for going against Lev 19:28, then you are being hypocritical by driving your car on the sabbath. Do you wear clothing made of two types of fabric? That is against the law also. Many more examples could be offered
---BRUCE5656 on 1/6/07|
If I live 50 miles away from any church and God has given us the brains to build a car for travel, then do I ignore this God given gift to take myself to worship Him and on a car?
