What Is A True Fast

My church has been talking a lot about fasting lately. What is the true definition of fasting? What do you have to give up? What do we fast for? I mean I know to be closer to God but is that all?

God called the Hebrews to afflict their souls on the day of atonement (Leviticus 23:26-32), and it was common to abstain from food, work, and even avoid bathing, it was a time to repent of their sins and to consider the Lord. Later, other fasts were led in order to repent and seek the Lords favor. It was common before entering ministry Matthew 4:2, Mark 1:13, Luke 4:2 > Jesus. Isaiah 58:3-14, Jeremiah 14:12, Zechariah 7:5, Matt 6:16-18 concern the reasons for fasting. Many Christians believe fasting allows one to gain dominance over our carnal, or selfish and ungodly, desires.

Grace be with you all - amen. Glenn

Fasting from any material thing (TVs,compters, etc.) is not a fast in a christian sense. It doesn't hurt the body and the spirit in any way. Fasting shows God how serious you are about your petitions. Fasting must hurt, but don't let it show.

Fasting from food and drink will adversely affect the body. The many reasons to fast can be found in the bible. Do an online search for "fast" and you'll quickly find answers that are contrary to many of these posts.

Moses was on Mount Sinai with the LORD forty days and forty nights without eating bread or drinking water. If God could bring back the dead, could he also keep a body alive without food and water?

Fasting just to lose weight is rediculous having a selfish motive.

Dear sis linda, you have the truth about fasting, keep it up, fasting does not break the cycle of sin like most people think, neither does it cleanse you in any way we have jesus in our heart, he is very close as long as we have a relationship with him, he is there, all fasting really does is give our faith more room to work...God bless

I think true fasting is something much more than just abstaining from food, drink, tv, or any other thing this world has to offer. When we do this kind of fast, it's seems to be more about me & my own spiritual growth.

In reading Isaiah 58:6-7, it seems that true fasting has to do more with what I do for others... and how I treat others. It is my heart fully surrendered to the love of God. Then, God's love flows thru me and blesses others. That is what I think true fasting is... at least, the "heart" of it.

greetings.Did not Isaiah write God's true meaning of a fast?
---earl on 11/18/08

The fast of Isaiah 58 was fulfilled by Christ as the substance of the shadow of the Day of Atonement. The only fast commanded by the law of Moses was on the Day of Atonement. Christ fulfilled that. He is the one who loosed the bands of wickedness, undid the heavy burdens, let the oppressed go free, and broke every yoke. By His death, we were freed from sin.

He dealt His bread (broken body) to the hungry, took the cast out into His house (drew all men into Himself), covered the naked (love covers a multitude of sins), and did not hide Himself from His own flesh (we are bone of His bone and flesh of His flesh). He doesn't hide from us. Jesus fasted in His passion so we could feast on His passion.
---Linda on 9/29/07

I would say that fasting on our parts would take place when He seems far away (the bridegroom away instead of very present within us) in order to fellowship with His sufferings on behalf of another. The one time I truly fasted came about during a time of intense hunger for the Word. I got so caught up in reading and studying the epistles of Paul that I just forgot to eat. I was fasting naturally but feasting spiritually.
---Linda on 9/29/07

I don't remember how long that went on but I was 31 pounds lighter when I realized I was still on the earth. At no point in time during all that did I make a "choice" to fast. What I was being led to do took precedence over what one may have thought needed to be done in the natural to survive.
---Linda on 9/29/07

According to Isaiah 58 is the true fast that God wants from us.Fasting actually means to give up something to weaken our flesh and strengthen our Spirit and relationship with Christ. We can fast from food, sex,tv anything we give up to engage in prayer and strengthen our Spirits. It takes us to another level in Christ.

''....But is that all'' LOL If you are not Actively praying and fasting you are basically wasting your time since when Jesus was was on earth the disciples did not need to fast/pray because Jesus was with them. But you see from Jesus died and Rose from the dead an no longer with us in the flesh , you Better Believe that in order to be effective You are required to Pray/Fast OFTEN.

Donna9759, Depending on the person, many can go 3 days without water, But I'm not sure if "drink" in (Acts 9:9) meant "water". Some would define "drink" in regards to fasting as "juice", "milk", etc. But it is possible that Paul didn't drink water during those 3 days. God Bless!
---Mrs._Morgan on 1/3/07

Mrs. Morgan - Here it is right from the book: Continuing on with the review of the book as we will look at chapter 3 here is a summary of what is about. Arthur is taking about a fast called the Abosolute Fast where you neither eat or drink he quotes the scripture Acts 9:9 and uses that as an example for this section. He mentions that the bible really only speaks about this for a period of 3 days as beyond that and you may end up doing yourself an injury.
---Donna9759 on 1/3/07

Dear Sister Donna9759 , You said: "Then there's the absolute fast where you don't eat or drink." ---If you meant water as "drink", Water doesn't count as food, I don't believe Jesus abstained from water on His 40 day fast, or Moses, etc. Abstaining from water isn't good, the body is made up of mostly water, it's essential for the proper functioning of the organs. God Bless!

Amand, there's a wonderful book called "God's Chosen Fast." Does anyone remember who the author is? A biblical fast is abstaining from food. There are all different varieties of fasts. There's the Daniel fast where you only eat fruits and vegetables. Then there's the absolute fast where you don't eat or drink. The one I've always done is no food, but I do drink water. The longest I've fasted is 20 days. You CAN indeed go to work when you're fasting, who said you can't?

Removing sin from your life, selfish sin:

Christians should not excuse sins in their life.

Fasting can break the cycle of sin.

David confessed his sins. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9

Fasting for family members, that they may cry out to the Lord and be saved, born again.

Fasting allows God to strengthen your inner man.

Fasting exposes hidden sin.

If you compartmentalize sins, hanging on to 'pets', because they suit you, fasting reveals that sin is sin.

Matt. 17:21
However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.

Churches call for 'chosen fasts', for the corporate Church body

There is the fast that you want to do for a particular reason, personal or for someone else

There is the fast that is led by the Holy Spirit

Fasting is a discipline that can take you from impossible to possible

What is the true definition of fasting? "Is not this the fast that I have chosen? To loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke? Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thy bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? When thou seest the naked that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh?" (Isa. 58:3-6) The answer to your final question is found in the remainder of the chapter.

What do we fast for? "Wherefore have we fasted, [they say], and thou seest not? [Why] have we afflicted our soul, and thou takest no knowledge? Behold in the day of your fast ye find pleasure..." What do you have to give up? " Is it such a fast that I have chosen? A day for a man to afflict his soul? Is it to bow down his head as a bulrish, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? Will thou call this a fast, and an acceptable day to the LORD?" [Cont.]

Carls5754. I dont know who your Q is addressed to however can I ask U a Q. How do you know you are a Gentile and not an Israelite? To follow Yahushua you have to be Israelite born, or be adopted, or grafted into Yahushua who is of the house of Judah of the Nation of Israel. Re your Q. End times

You probably should give up food, but drink water. If your church is preparing a corporate fast you should follow your pastor's advice. I'm sure he will be glad to explain. If there's something you don't understand after talking with him then bring it to this forum. If I remember correctly, when Jesus rebuked the demons from a man after the disciples couldn't, Jesus instructed them that "this kind goeth not out but through prayer and fasting." So it is important to our faith.
