If the Holy Spirit is indwelling, how would oil represent him?
---michael_e on 2/22/10|
We anoint with oil in obedience to God according to the Word of God. James 5:14 Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.

The intrepretation of each word is provided by the Hebrew letters.
The two parent root hebrew letters for olive are zayin and Hhets.
Zayin's meaning:Food,cut and nourish.
Hhets's meaing:Outside,Divide and half.
What is it that is cut, divide in half and may become cast out?
Gen15:17"Make a covenant"(karat)the sacrifice was literally cut in two pieces each party passes through the pieces. If the party violated the covenant the other party had the right to cut(divide)the other in two pieces.
Israel was divided into two nations:Israel and Judah.Gen1510-Jer 34:18-20
Gen8:11And the dove came in to him in the evening, and,lo,in her mouth an OLIVE leaf pluckt off:soo Noah knew that the waters were abated from off the earth.

Oil is symbolic of the Holy Spirit. that and that alone is the reason we use oil to anoint in a spiritual sense.
Anointng a wound (as in the good samaritan) is done because oil has vitamin E which helps heal wounds
Hope these helps

As already stated: Oil represent or symbolizes the Holy Spirit. Olive oil was coveted because of its cost during bible days. Especially virgin olive oil. This was probably why it was chosen for such a sacred part of our christian worship(anointing)
Of course any type oil can be used. Baby oil, mineral etc...
Olive oil has also been used as a healing balm(oil) I grew up taking a tsp everyday for health sake. It keeps you regular, helps with colds and coughs. I anoint myself during fasting periods with the oil, I put it on bumps and bruises and then pray for healing. I would not be without my bottle. We also have a service at my church where we bring oil to be prayed over(in its bottle)Any size you like. God bless

The Bible says to speak the word to others so that they are saved and become disciples too, so why would we not follow this? The Bible says to pray and fast, so why would we not follow this? The Bible says to get baptized, so why would we not follow this? And likewise, the Bible says to anoint the sick with oil, so why would we not follow this? It would be better for us to merely follow the instructions in the Holy Bible, rather than to neglect them. Results come from compliance, not from noncomplying.

There is nothing wrong with prayer. "The fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much." "Wherever two or more are gathered in my name, there I am in their midst." "Pray withoug ceasing" . However, anointing with oil is not merely some man made doctrinal thought but rather completely Biblical.

The oil is traditional.
The main passage used for oil is James 5:14
Jame 5:14 "Is anyone among you sick? Then he must call for the elders of the church and they are to pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord,"
Unfortunately, the oil in this verse refers to olive oil which was used for medicinal purposes.
Luke 10:34 "and came to him and bandaged up his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them, and he put him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn and took care of him"

Prayer works, thanksgiving being the key. we have the indwelling Holy Spirit, why would you need oil to represent him?
Phil.4:6 Be careful for nothing, but in every thing by prayer and supplication with THANKSGIVING let your requests be made known unto God. 7. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

It is not the oil that heals, but the faith behind the oil. And it does not have to be only olive oil. For "elaio" is not exclusively olive oil, for depending on the context elaio and eleipse can be synonymous: "anointing him with oil"...(elaio) James 5:14. "with ointment anointed of me these feet." (eleipse) Luke 7:46. Etymologically, e- (prepositional prefix meaning, "on" or "with"). "leipse" from "lipos" (meaning. "lipid" or "fat" or "lubricant"). Therefore elaio can rightly mean, "oil" and "anointing", as well as "olive" or "olive oil".

Not just any oil:olive oil.
It is the obedience of the act and knowing what it represents.
Christ means the Anointed one.
He is the One who blots out all...
Our faith is in Gods Word and the confirmation of it-by His Spirit-

(2.)If someone doesn't trust/believe God, that He can get them well, it won't happen. God said that He gives every man a measure of Faith, so there isn't any excuse for not trusting Him. One man honestly told Jesus "I believe, Lord, help thou my unbelief!"(Mark 9:24) that man was struggling and Jesus helped him, delivered his son. God Bless!

some people(non belivers) are very ignorant in the way they use scripture.lBiblically, Oil represents The Holy Spirit Zech4:2-6, Rev4:5. Sick people r anointed n prayed upon for healing James5:14, Holy victuals annointed Ex29:36..examples of this ceremony has been seen to be done on many things 2day and it stemmed from the bible.

You anoint with oil to heal, bless, exorcise demons, and ordain for ministry. This along with prayer is what God has called us to do.
---Leslie on 1/14/07|
In addition to anointing with oil for healing I believe sometimes God will lead us to anoint other items for other reasons and in those cases it is a matter of obedience. In several cases I have anointed my home or children or other items when I felt that God was leading me to. Sometimes for protection, sometimes to dedicate them to him, at any rate I believe that oil can serve various functions in the service of the kingdom.

Dannyboy, Oil is a sign of the presence of the Holy Spirit and we do it because the Bible instructs us to do it. James Chapter 5 says, Is anyone amoung you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church and let him anoint with oil the one that is sick. We obey the word of God and Oil is symbolic of the Holy Spirit.
---Donna9759 on 1/9/07|
It is not just tradition. It is very scriptural as in James 5:14, "Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:"

(1.)Because God said to do so, I like it the way Mary put it "Whatsoever HE SAITH unto you, do it"(John 2:5). It's an example of "a point of contact" to release one's faith, Oil that has been blessed and prayed over by a true child of God, has the Lord's holy anointing upon it, But God can only work through faith.
