Is There A Sinners Prayer

Why do some Christians believe that when you say the sinners prayer which isn't even in the bible, or is it that is when the Holy Spirit indwells you? Where is the scripture reference to back that up? Doesn't Acts 2:38 tell us what to do to be saved?

Michael_e, if no one told you you were complete in Christ, then who did? Personally I am so greatful I was never told that by another. What I am grateful for is The Lord showed me in due time, and revealed that to me what it means to be complete in Christ. Being told means nothing. UNDERSTANDING it means everything. I wouldn't trade that journey for anything in the world. And boy what a journey that was, learning so very very much along the way to have a fuller understanding of that verse. Volumes upon volumes can be written about that verse.

//Michael, why blame the Church, if you are save you should be reading your Bible everyday, you should know//

This was before salvation.
//What do you mean ditto? Don't you want to follow what Jesus commands? In (Matt. 28:19)
Did you notice who he was speaking to?
Matt 28:16 Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them.
Did you notice how far they went
Acts 8:1
Notice who Jesus ministered to Rom 15:8 Matt 10:5, 15:24
Studying the Bible rightly divided is the key. Who is speaking, who are they speaking to, what are they speaking about.

//Never once was I told that I am complete in Christ. Paul said. And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power: Col 2:10.//
Michael, why blame the Church, if you are save you should be reading your Bible everyday, you should know. Then you say,

// Religion says go forward, confess your sins, be baptized, then you're saved.
Ditto for Tradition and Denominationalism.//

What do you mean ditto? Don't you want to follow what Jesus commands? In (Matt. 28:19) Jesus said,
"Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit" Also, without repentance there is no salvation. You say that doesn't count.
---Luke on 9/2/14

Never once in denominational circles was I directly directed to verses that detailed my position in Christ.
Never once was I told that I am complete in Christ. Paul said. And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power: Col 2:10.
KNOWING who you are in Christ makes the difference. Religion says go forward, confess your sins, be baptized, then you're saved.
Ditto for Tradition and Denominationalism.
Christian life will not operate on the basis of ignorance.
If you are saved you have been made part of what God is doing today and He has fully equipped you to do His will. He has not left you here unprepared, unprotected or unprovisioned.

Dear Rita,
you are right. I have seen so many go forward who were never changed.
When a pastor makes a calling to those who were listening to the gospel, or who had heard the gospel before by someone else who had already witnessed to them, and they believed it, they are the only ones who should go forward, because they are the only ones with saving faith. But many others go forward with those who believed, yet there was never no change of heart, for later to fall away.
The work of the Holy Spirit we do not see physically, it is like the wind that we do not see, but we know and can feel the change in our hearts. Then later we make a commitment. It can be days or months after we hear the gospel and believe it. Agape
---Luke on 8/31/14

"He will say the sinners prayer by repenting with a contrite heart. The point is, the sinners prayer is legit, but only to those whom the Spirit has already changed and granted them faith"

Absolutely Luke. Sadly, at too many evangelical rallies (and similar meetings) those going forward for counselling are considered already saved - just because they walked forward - and signing the card just 'clinches the deal' or so they are lead to believed.

I've seen many of those cards carried by people with the filthiest mouth and most appalling behaviour who are convinced they are saved, yet have never set foot in a church since that day.

Counselling is not a role to be undertaken by just anyone 'who goes to church'.
---Rita_H on 8/30/14

Great answer. When a sinner answers the sinners prayer, and in order for him to be truly save, he has to have been quicken by the Holy Spirit, granted faith to believe, then his repentance and commitment are genuine.
Many say yes to the sinners prayer, but their hearts were never changed by the Spirit. And in time they fall away. Because there was never a change by the Holy Spirit. Their faith was a false faith. When a person is changed, he wants to commit his life to Christ. He already has faith. He will say the sinners prayer by repenting with a contrite heart. The point is, the sinners prayer is legit, but only to those whom the Spirit has already changed and granted them faith. Just read 2 Tim. 2:25,26 and Phil. 1:29. Agape
---Luke on 8/29/14

Pick up any tract and you will see the sinners prayer. The problem I have with that is no one and I mean no one can repeat a sinners prayer and be saved. You must believe in your heart and with your mouth confess that Christ died for you and will forgive you of your sin. That is a far cry from reading a sinners prayer.
---shira4368 on 8/28/14

This is the way I see it no where in the word far as I know any "sinners prayer"for years people have been as a way to make somebody whether inward or admitingly get them to the alter.I find if you will cry out to God yourself, the word of God will let you know you are in need of a saviour and can not save your self.Amen.
Love of Jesus!

\\"Repent (turn away from the Judaism to Christianity) and be baptized everyone of you in the name of Jesus Christ for (because of)\\

"For" and "because of" do not mean the same things, trey.

Glory to Jesus Christ!
---Cluny on 12/8/12

The scriptures do not teach that water baptism is required for eternal salvation.

The child of God, in obedience should submit to water baptism as a public testimony to the fact that they believe that Christ lived, died, and rose again to redeem his children.

The meaning of what Peter was speaking of in Acts 2:38 is:
"Repent (turn away from the Judaism to Christianity) and be baptized everyone of you in the name of Jesus Christ for (because of) the remission (removal of your) of sins and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost (the answer of a good conscience toward God).
---trey on 12/8/12

Holy Scripture does not identify a sinners prayer. This is understood because holy scripture states God does not hear the sinner. To claim there is a sinners prayer is practicing a doctrine of devils. God calls people to him mankind does not call people to God. The sinners prayer contradicts God saying a person can instruct another person to say some words (the sinners prayer) and they are magically transformed into a non-sinner. Choose God and his word and stop leading people to Satan with a false sinners prayer, yet the deceived will not stop they will continue because they do not understand God does not hear sinners and refuse to believe Gods word only seeking self-satisfaction in their religious high.
---Follower_of_Christ on 12/8/12

Phil, Paul was speaking to the new converts "Jews" in (Acts 2:38) but the message to them was for all whom God will call
"For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call" They, the Jews were the first ones in the Church. Later Gentiles joined them. Both make up the Church of Christ.
There is not two churches of Christ, only one Church, meaning "the called out ones."
---Mark_V. on 12/8/12

'The' Sinners Prayer or 'A' Sinners Prayer should refer to the prayer prayed by individuals when they confess that they are a sinner, in need of a Saviour and accept that Jesus is the only one who can save.

This can be worded any way the sinner wishes providing it shows that they understand what they do and to whom they pray this prayer.

Many crusades and evangelical rallies have small printed cards with "The Sinners Prayer" printed on it and use specific words. People are encouraged to go forward 'to be saved' and given a card to sign.

Some of those people will be saved but some will leave convinced that they are saved 'just because' they signed that card.

Satan also attends such events and deceives many.
---Rita_H on 12/7/12

The sinners prayer is in the Bible. Jesus said that the sinner repents sincerely and is forgiven. While the righteous man looks to his own good works as worthiness and is not forgiven.

In Psalm 51 and Isaiah 55 there are sinner's prayers. Oh excuse me I must be wrong because they aren't called "sinner's prayers".

And, so no, Acts 2:38 is not useful as a prayer. Neither is Romans 10:9-10. They aren't useful for prayer either.

But yes, 1Cor 12:7-8 is a prayer and it was rejected by God because the apostle Paul was in pride to ask three times.

2 Timothy 3:16 "All scripture is given by inspiration of God ..."

When the Apostles were inspired by God to record Acts 2:38 to repent and be baptized these requirements are necessary to receive the gift of Gods holy spirit.

in addition to repentance and baptism only those who obey are given Gods Spirit:

Acts 5:32
And we are his witnesses of these things, and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him. (also Hebrews 5:9)

All others are the children of Satan and do not obey God and his 10 laws: Ephesians 2:2, Colossians 3:6

God does not hear sinners a sinners prayer is a doctrine of devils against Gods Word: John 9:31

//Doesn't Acts 2:38 tell us what to do to be saved//
Some say it does,"the baptism of the Holy Spirit, evidenced by tongue talking" But those that believe this is salvation for today, stay away from Acts 2:44 And all that believed were together, and had all things common,
45 And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need.
---michael_e on 11/10/12

In Acts 2:38, Peter is addressing his kinsmen. He is not ministering to the nations. Only Paul the apostle was commissioned by God to herald the grace of God to the Gentiles.

Israel as a nation failed to repent, killed the Lord and Stephen, and the commission to go into the world making disciples was suspended.

God has predesignated an ecclesia out of the nations for a body for His Son in heaven. Works of repentance and baptism do not avail. It is all of grace through faith.

We must hear the good news, then trust the news as truth.
We then can have life through christ.
As a believer we live and proclaim the Gospel. We never waiver from the truth, that being, HIS death, resurrection and what it all means to those who trust in HIM. He Came to put sin away so those who trust in HIM and HIS work(cross) can have life.
Those who hear then seek will be called. When your called you will run in tears to serve and have life eternal.
What a joy the Christian life is.

James L, Thanks again!Generic grace? Based on prayer? ABSOLUTELY NOT
Isaiah 26:10-11 Let grace be shown to the wicked, yet will he not learn righteousness: in the land of uprightness will he deal unjustly, and will not behold the majesty of the LORD. LORD, when thy hand is lifted up, they will not see: but they shall see, and be ashamed for their envy at the people, yea, the fire of thine enemies shall devour them.
---J_Marc on 11/7/12

Jack B, you gave good passages. Those who call on the name of the Lord are the one's who believe already. And they will be save from the wrath of God and receive eternal life. Unbelievers do not call on the name of the Lord. They have no faith in Him. Another thing, God does not hear their prayers. God hears the prayers of His children only. The passage you gave in Hebrews is a good passage:
"Hebrews 11:6
But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him."
(Rom. 10:11) tells us, "There is none who seeks of God" Only believers seek God. Read Romans 10:9. Only if you believe in your heart already.
---Mark_V. on 11/7/12

Shira4368 & pat, some good thoughts.

J Marc is absolutely correct that a "sinner's prayer" is simply not taught in scripture, and that is the very best reason to never preach it.

JackB, Romans 10:13 is not in the context of conversion, as Paul had already covered that in chapters 2-4

I said a "sinner's prayer" hundreds of times before I ever even knew the gospel. And many times I was very sincere. It is a completely worthless ritual that sends MILLIONS to hell.

God never saved anyone because they asked Him to. That would usurp what Christ did on the cross.

Generic grace? Based on prayer? ABSOLUTELY NOT

Grace based on Faith in Christ? YES

pat, thanks so much for the kind words. to me...a sinners prayer is when an individual ask for God to save them and mean it in their hearts. has anyone ever seen someone saved with a smile on their face? when we are broken in tears with conviction, we don't smile. I witnessed a guy who thought he was saved and he came up from the altar smiling. something not right about that scene.

Luke 11:13
If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ASK him?

Romans 10:12,13
For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that CALL upon him.

For whosoever shall CALL upon the name of the Lord shall be saved

Hebrews 11:6
But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Enough said

God sends the Spirit, no where it says "ask Jesus into your hearts"! Galations 4:6 And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. Sadly, i have witinessed some people "ask Jesus into their hearts" & no change for the better happens! They go ahead & hate their neighbor & cheat a friend & leave sin in the middle of their business! Something did enter them & it wasn't Christ!

Shira4368, I liked your testimony. I fear you are so right. I will not do a sinners prayer for people. I did once, when I first got saved, and I knew that she was only saying it to appease me. I knew this. I'll always explain to the people, that it is God and His power and of His Blood that saves lost souls. And God initiates a sinners prayer. If you have this, by the power of God, please, come on down.

Follower, what you wrote was right on and biblical. I would not include satan in your answer. I would suggest to leave him out of your answers, unless the blog is concerning him, he doesn't need for us to give him the time of day. Second, if you believe in everything you said, my question is, "Do you believe in free will?"
Because if you do, then everything you said is not true at all. In the concept of free will, a sinner has the right to come to Christ and they believe they do, because as they say, they are not robots, while they are still lost. Scripture tells us "No one seeks of God" meaning the lost. I will wait for your answer.
---Mark_V. on 11/4/12

The bible was not written for sinners. The bible and everything in it was written for believers. Believers are taught to turn away from our former sinful life and we do this by repentance and baptism, then we begin to walk with the Lord Jesus and doing the will of the Father in heaven. A sinners prayer does not exist in holy scripture it is an idea of men led by Satan, because God does not hear sinners!

John 9:31
Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth.

If you are referring to Scriptures in, just believe, even demons believes and tremble. [must look at other scriptures]. It is God who initiates a sinners prayer. I know this by my own experience. He also flashed a vision of hell right befoe me, at my converson. You might not see that in the Bible, either. I realize all conversions are not exactly the same. However, a sinners prayer must ensue in order to be saved. Forgveness of sins, ect.

You are right, there is no such thing as a 'sinners prayer' in the bible. But look what Jesus told Nicodemus in John 3 to learn what must be done to be saved. Therefore just saying a prayer must not be the whole enchalota.

Duane, Gospel means Good News. So, you are right in a way. But, when I said read the Gospel first, I am saying to read the pages with God Jesus' Words written in red. The first four books of the New Testament. Jesus is clear. Why would you take an insert from one of the letters and weight it higher than Jesus' very own Words? Jesus is the God who Saved us. Believe in Him and Be Baptized. Faith and Work. Spirit and Water. Jesus has already told you how to be Saved. Why look in other places for the answer?

Saying the Sinner's Prayer is part of becoming born again. The Sinner's Prayer is found in Psalm 32:3-5+ Psalm 51. BTW, that is one of my favorite songs, "Create in me a clean heart, O God" (Ps.51:10), many singers sing it, I think Kieth Green, whom is passed on, was the first music minister whom I first heard it led in music.

---Ryan on 2/5/07

#2 CATHERINE, This term is also one of just many terms that man has taken the liberty to create others are: Accept Jesus, rapture, personal savior, age of accountability & many others. In the first place, God initiates it. The sinners prayer is the only prayer, God will hear from a lost person. Basicly, it's a prayer asking for forgivness of all sins-- past, present, and future. That is why we call it the sinners prayer. [It has to come from the heart] God is the person that is doing it. All you have to do is receive. [The working of the Holy Spirit.]

Alot of people believe if you can make a sinner repeat after you, then they are saved. That is so not true. If God is convicting a sinner, then the only thing the sinner has to do is just ask for forgivness. Acts 2:38 tells us that we can recieve the gift of the Holy Ghost, but not how to get saved. This is exactly what the e-card on Apostasy means about OSAS. Just saying a sinners prayer doesn't save you. A heart turning completely around and going the other way is a heart that believes. Believe is an "ACTION" word here. Your heart is your whole person, not your brain. The brain gets old, forgetful and even senile. Brain damage can happen. That is why God said the Heart.

Helen how is it you use Romans 10:9,10 without looking at I Corinthians 12:3 and John 6:65. The only way you are led to salvation is by the mercy of the Father to grant you access to the Son. Your will to acquire salvation has no bearing on you receiving salvation because the Father, Son and Spirit are not in subjection to the will of their creation, Romans 9:16. By the way trying to manipulate Romans 10:9,10 to mean a 'Sinners Prayer' is not accurately handling the Word of Truth.
---Ryan on 1/18/07

Praying the Rosary or a sinners prayer is repetitious and rehearsed.

There is no sinners prayer. Romans 10:9 is not a prayer...believing in your heart first will cause you to openly profess Jesus Christ, because you are not ashamed.
Repentance, is what believing means. Anything else is just head knowledge, like one believes George Washington existed. Believing Jesus existed does not save. Just as James said..even the devils believe. That is the wrong kind of believe. There is no power in this kind of believing. Real repentance (belief) has power to change your life.

I will admit that the only "sinner's prayer" I've seen is in Jesus's parable of the Taxcollector and Pharisee: "God, be merciful to me, a sinner."

(BTW--which of us is NOT a sinner?)

This statement,"For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved." Is made three times in the Bible.ROMANS 10:13, ACTS 2:21 and JOEL2:32. When they lost person says the sinner's prayer they are entering into a verbal contract with Almighty God. He is the one that said,"For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved." And because God's Word cannot be broken, this statement is in fact an open contract for whosoever will verbally agree to it. Well, the Bilble does say that "God is not willing that any should be lost, but that all should come to repentance," and besides at the point where this person is asking what to do to be saved they demonstrate they are part of the elect, if that's what you believe in. The sinners prayer simply means that you tell God that you know you have sinned, and that only His grace can save you. You ask Him for forgiveness and ask Him to help you change your life.

THE SINNERS PRAYER, does not have to be a book. GOD Is the one who initiates it. IT is called the sinners prayer, because you need to be forgiven for all of your sins. PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE. AND after you are saved, we still, unfortunatly, sin. WE HAVE to keep asking FOR MERCY and FORGIVENESS. IT'S what will get to heaven, too.

Phil-the word superfluous means not needed, unnecessary, irrevalant. So are you saying that the sinners prayer is not needed?

If what you're saying is true, that "unless you were predestined to be amoung God's elect, you are amoung the lost and there's nothing an individual can do."

Then what about "someone plants a seed, someone waters, but it's God who causes the growth?" AND to whom then do we know who to witness to?
