Are The Gifts For Today

If the gifts are not for today, why does the Bible say this in first Corinthians 12:31," But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way."?

The Corinthians had all the gifts that every individual had all the gifts
1corinthian1,7 so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift, as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ,
1Corinthians 12,6 And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all.
The word "to" used in 1Corinthians 12,8-10
is usually translated "and" It really means this is the full set of gifts given to every true believer from a God who does not show favoritism (Acts10,34) and to whom it is an abomination to give a different measure to different people Proverbs 20:10 Divers weights, and divers measures, both of them are alike abomination to the LORD.

A pastor is supposed to have spiritual gifts, I contend that a man with a theology degree and a church to lead who doesn't believe in spiritual gifts needs to find a new line of work.

I received the gift of preaching as a new Christian. I didn't know the Bible, but I was preaching Bible verses as God led me. There's no off button for a gift, but the gift is only as productive as the person's willingness to follow the Lord.

If you're not led by the Spirit, you won't believe in gifts.

Since being Baptized in the Holy Spirit my walk with the Lord changed so much. The love and passion for Christ and the desire to be in Him is just so personal - I can not imagine trying to be good. It is so much better to just stay in Him. Thats the difference - its not a denomination - its a way of life- ask a Spirit filled believer to lay hands on you and be filled. Its so real. Its been almost 20 years and it just gets better.

As a Sprit filled Christian I've seen a prejudice on a number of sites about people who have certain gifts. Are the gifts being spoken of here ie: ICor 13 & 14 gifts of prophecy, tongues etc or Coll. gifts of patience, humility etc. I would rather have love......but do not hate prophecy.
We need to not abuse the gifts or the bodies that hold them.

mima, who is telling you that the gifts of the spirit are not for today?as long as people are being saved and the spirit is still in the world the gifts are here.PERIOD.

It is very simple. If you have escaped HELL, you have spiritual gifts. The ones that knows there's, well, they know what they are all about.

wivv==You are right. Even tho God never takes away your spiritual gifts, one is not better than the other. We really have to war and fight, that pride, stays away. What goes up can come down. God has shown me, that before. It is imperative, that we give God all the glory and praise, and I am serious about that.

No it's ok I wasn't offended.
---Matthew on 1/28/07

There is no scripture, (that I know about), that indicates any of the gifts are no longer available. The problem, at least in the past, had been some Christians think some gifts are more important than others. Some take it as a sign of spiritual superiority to have certain gifts. Not so!
A gift is just that, a gift, not something you earn.

Matthew - You sound offended. There is no way I meant to offend or hurt you in any way. I was letting you know that you made me smile, and I needed a smile too! Bless you brother.

Well I didn't know. My suggestions were sincere and heartfelt. Was just trying to help is all.

Matthew - :) I am amused at your suggestions to Mima. He is a very grown-up brother in the Lord. He said on his Birthday Blog that he has been studying the Bible for 45 years! Thanks for the smile brother. :)

I believe the gifts of the Holy Spirit are most certainly given in these days and these are truly AWESOME gifts!

Matthew I have found during my brief time on this forum that Mima ask questions not because he/she does not know the answer, but rather to promote a simulating exchange of thoughts & ideas between us, as the called of God. I for one appreciate him/her taking the time to do so. Mima is not a baby in Christ, he is more than likely an evangelist. The gifts of the Father are perpetual. They will only cease when they are no longer needed.

Yes the spiritual gifts are for today, God never change. the gift of prophecy is the greatest, when you don't walk in love it means nothing. love one another love your enemies, God will bless you when you don't have love you are blocking your blessing.

All the gifts of God are good.

What do you think about someone as gifted as Tiger Woods in the game of golf?

There are the spiritual gifts and talents.
Do you think God gives everyone of us a talent like Tiger, to make a living?
Do you think some do not discover that talent in our lifetimes, and why not?

Mima you seem to have a lot of questions about Christianity. I would recommend above all pray every day for God to guide you into ALL truth. Also fast when you can it helps a lot. Trust in the Lord to guide you to the truth. So get your head into that Bible like crazy. As for your question, I truly believe the gifts are definetaly still for today.
---Matthew on 1/26/07

Mima
why does the Bible say this in first Corinthians 12:31," But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way."?

Its bringing us to the understanding that we are to cherish (to love as the Lord has showed us how) the gifts that God has blessed us with. When we do this, God through Christ is able to show us the Divine way of existing that is his intent for life.
---ShawnM.T on 1/25/07

(ii) When we use our gifts to lift up those who are suffering and rejoice with those who are honored, we are residing in the will of God. In this place we are shown the divine way of the Lord. This way of being enables us to know, understand & experience the many members of the body of Christ; it enables us to be intimate with God.
---ShawnM.T on 1/25/07

If the gifts, I'M assuming that you are speaking of spiritual gifts. If they are not for today, then why is God passing them out? EVEN today. He does not give them, for you to sit on them either. We are to use them, but only for the glory of God.

Who says the gifts aren't for today? The bible says there is nothing new under the sun, and God changes not. So what happens way back in the bible, could very well happen today. The reason why people don't use these gifts today is because of pride, and niave people.

I will say what I've said before: The test of the validity of any given sign is its fruit in the lives of the people involved.

To paraphrase 1 Cor 13, you can do all the right things for the wrong reason, or even an empty movtive.
