Matthew 22:36-40 "the greatest commandment is to love God with your whole heart...the second is to love your neighbor as yourself. On these 2 commandments the whole law hangs..." Jesus sermon on the mount,Matthew 5:17-48 shows us how Jesus expects us to view the Law.
---Andrea2222 on 1/4/08

Actually, there were 613 commandments, not merely 10, given on Mt. Sinai.
---Jack on 1/2/08

jana, now I'm confused. You say Christ replaced only the ceremonial laws? If this is so what about civil laws, were those replaced by Christ also, or was it only ceremonial law?
---Ryan on 3/5/07

Lee: your wrong agains. The Old Cer/laws werent not faulty at all. It's purpose was 2point to the coming of Christ and 2prepare the people 4His coming. He came 2replace the sac/animals which could not protect us from sin n death, but Christ did by dying inplace of the Lamb, signifying our redemption and saving grace. to continue

Lee:Heb8:8 I will make a new covenant n the old which r the cer/laws in the days of the fathers made obselete,I regard no more.V10I will put my laws into their mind,n write them in their hearts Lee. V13 A n/cov,He made first one cer/laws old...see,it(ten laws) is now written in our hearts n there4 still ongoing. Jesus is the NC,the Law,the Word n the Lord of the Sabbath Amen.

The Scripture informs us that the Old Covenant had faults.

Hebr. 8:7 For if that 1st covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the 2nd.

But Jesus as God "has he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also He is the mediator of a better covenant, established on better promises" (8:6).

Either you adhere to the Old obsolete covenant (Hebr 8:13) made only with the Jewish nation, or you follow the New covenant that has better promises.

If you read the whole Bible, you will note that Jesus does not give a whole lot of new commandments, He merely clarifies what already existed. We Christians are not limited to the ten commandments, and not bound by Mosaic Law, God's commandments are in our hearts and they go far beyond both. If we love God with ALL of our heart, body, and soul, then we would not wish to do anything that might offend God. Jesus sums it up with two simple commandments that cover it all - Matthew 22:37-40.

We need to keep in mind that the God on Mount Sinai, is Jesus. The old testament, The new testament, IT'S all Jesus. If you do not believe this, then you are lost.

Jeff: Perhaps I am "severely misunderstanding" the following verses as well. Perhaps you can enlighten me as to how. There are many more of them.

Joh 17:5 And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.

Col 2:9 For in him dwelleth all the fullness of the Godhead bodily.

Heb 5:5 Thou art my Son, today have I begotten thee.

Jeff - 2:

1Jo 5:7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.

1Co 10:4 And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.

Joh 8:58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I AM.

Jesus is the only God. Before his birth in B.C. he gave us his O.T. Levitcal-Mosaic Commandments, after his birth in A.D. he gave us his new Judaic-Messianic Commandments. The Old Testament Law is abolished, and the New Testament Law is currently in force. Both Laws are contrary to each other; it is impossible to abide by the new and also abide by the old, the Galatians tried to do this and fell from grace, for all Old Testament Leaven must be forsaken is order to follow Christ and his New Commandments.
---Eloy on 2/19/07

Jerry- "as a Jew you may not be familiar with the NT." No, I'm very familiar w/it.
"Jesus was the creator in Eden,". you are severely misunderstanding this verse. He's not G-d.
"the "Rock" that followed the Israelites ..." where in the OT do you get this?(I know where but I want to see if you can find it)
"I AM"that existed before Abraham & identified Himself..." I wholeheartedly disagree w/you, so would Yeshua(luke 18:18-19)
---Jeff on 2/19/07

Matthew 5:17 Jesus does not contradict the OT, He fulfills it. He confirmed and clarified the Ten Commandments in the NT, and if you weren't sure, He giftwrapped them all into two simple commandments - Matthew 22:36-40.

"all scripture is profitable for correction"

George this passage means scripture is profitable for correcting others, doctrines, beliefs, etc. It isn't talking about scripture is able to be corrected by adding, removing or changing it. I hope this helps.
---Matthew on 2/18/07

Jack: Actually, LOGOS means Word - not SON. What do you make of:

Eph 3:9 ...which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ:

Heb 1:2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;
---jerry6593 on 2/18/07

You are so right Catherine. Jesus IS the God of the Old Testament as well as the New. Many who call themselves Christian deny this truth because (IMHO) they wish to continue in some pet sin that the OT forbids. They think that if they merely "believe" in Jesus, then they are free to indulge in the things Jesus called abominable in the OT. The devils also believe.

Jana: I think (although this is not very popular) that when he says "all scripture is profitable for correction" he may have been talking about the old testament, because he didn't know the other books of the new testament and some may not have even been written.
this is a first-look opinion of mine after my first reading of the whole bible.
---george on 2/18/07

10 Commandments: Have you ever lied = lier, have you ever stolen something, including not tithing = thief, have you ever placed something/someone before God or made a god to suit yourself = idolity, have you ever looked with lust at anyone = adultry, have you ever hated anyone or been angry with anyone = murder, have you ever used God's name as a cussword = blasphemy. Those are just 7 of the 10 commandments. How did you do?
---Leslie on 2/17/07

** Jeff: I realize that as a Jew you may not be familiar with the NT. The NT claims that Jesus was the creator in Eden,**

Actually, what the NT says is that it's the SON, the LOGOS, who was the Creator.

It was not until later that the Logos took flesh and was given the name Jesus in His Incarnation.
---Jack on 2/17/07

Jeff: I realize that as a Jew you may not be familiar with the NT. The NT claims that Jesus was the creator in Eden, the "Rock" that followed the Israelites in the wilderness and the "I AM" that existed before Abraham and identified Himself by that name to Moses. Jesus claimed that the OT was ALL ABOUT HIM, and many OT messianic prophecies seem to concur.

We need to remember, True Christians, That Jesus is God, So He is the God of the old Testament as well as the New Testament. That should end a lot of debates-Yes, Auguments-Yes, discussions-Yes.

a)Kay, 2Tim3:16-17ALL SCRIPTURE IS INSPIRED BY GOD,n is useful 4teaching truth, rebuking error, correcting faults,n giving instruction 4rightful living so that the person who serves God may be fully qualified n equipped 2 do every kind of good deed. EVERY SCRIPTURE MEANS OLD N NEW TESTAMENT OF THE BIBLE. NOT NT ONLY THATS FALSE TEACHING.

"..all in all there are about 600 Civil Laws and 10 Moral Laws.."-jana

There are more than 10 moral laws. The 10 Commandments consisted of moral and ceremonial. Just as the book of the law consisted of moral and ceremonial. The entire OC was nailed to the cross, the 10 written in stone were included (2 Cor 3).
---Kay6588 on 2/15/07

well to understand God we as christian should access his entire word.the old testament is the old convenant with the jewish people and a prorhesy about his son.it tells of spirit filled men who obeyed God,Gods prophets,Gods nature and his commandments.the new testament is of the life and ministry of jesus.his resurrection and the great commission and how we should live after we accept him.

leslie, again you cant say we dont follow old testament and say follow 10 commandments, but....jesus clearly states some things we should and should not do and the 10 commandments are included in that

Leslie=== You said it so well. If I may. Obey the Ten commandments, You live. Don't obey the Ten Commandments, you Die. That'S It.
---catherine on 2/15/07

jerry6593-"It was Jesus on Mt. Sinai."

No, last time I checked it was G-d and Moses.
---Jeff on 2/15/07

jana-"All commandments are given by Christ & all in all there are about 600 Civil Laws & 10 Moral Laws with the Ceremonial/Mosaic Laws obselet at the cross"

1. its 613 commandments, statutes & ordinances, so you're missing three. 2. If jesus gave them on Mt. Sinai(which he didn't),why would he make them obsolete at the cross? this idea of giving Torah then abrogating protrays G-d incorrectly.3.G-d never split Law into divisions, He states that it's 1 Law for jew & gentile. get it right!

We as Christians MUST follow Jesus and the 10 Commandments.
---Leslie on 2/15/07

We are to follow Jesus. And as we follow Jesus and "Keep our eyes fixed upon Him, the author and finisher of our faith," He will lead us and guide us into all truth.
As you fall in love with Jesus, his commandments are not burdensome, they become easy to follow because the Love you develop for Him outweighs any commandments and causes you to want to follow Him, thus you're following them too.
---donna6598 on 2/15/07

It was Jesus on Mt. Sinai. We should follow all of His commandments - OT & NT.
---jerry6593 on 2/15/07

The commands given by Jesus force all precepts into two commands as he restated Moses' writings.

The law and the prophets (Torah) are captured spiritually by loving God with all of you, and your neighbor as yourself.

God's grace is not about commands because no one who knows his master's will needs a command, there is no chore to the one who rejoices at his work.

All commandments are given by Christ and all in all there are about 600 Civil Laws and 10 Moral Laws with the Ceremonial/Mosaic Laws obselet at the cross..We r to follow all of them but God specificly commanded us to obey the Moral Laws for they were given for a guide to rightful living.
---jana on 2/15/07

Yes, there are more than 70 New Covenant commandments. I believe there are about 180.
We are to follow the commandments that were given to the Church by Jesus. We aren't obligated to follow the commandments that were given to Israel by Moses.
