Women With Long Hair

I'm a new Christian, and I read in the Bible that women are supposed to have long hair. Being a black woman, my hair won't grow long. So I wear weaves. I don't want to wear them but it seems like having my God-given short hair makes me un-feminine. Advice?

Dont worry about your hair dear..God knows your heart and He is the one who gave you your type of hair..I dont have any at all so I dont worry..Dont worry about what others say..if your hair dont grown any more, that is God's business..not mans..He knows why it doesnt grow long..

Lexi: You need to watch your choice of words and be more merciful toward others. I do agree with your statement somewhat. Black people have thick beautiful hair that grows like any other race. You just need to take better care of it and keep it trimmed along the edges. You can grow longer hair,it you try.
---Robyn on 4/21/08

Ebony, wear your hair however it makes you happy. God admires all creatures as He created them. Your hair doesn't grow long for good reason. Back in the day, the people who were blessed with shorter hair in relatively hotter climates survived better, just as people with longer hair could stand the cold. He made your biology perfect for you.
---Hermes on 4/21/08

One reason that hair is a women's glory because long, healthy hair indicates that you are living out the fruits of the spirit -love, joy, peace, etc. A woman who is stressed cannot grow long healthy hair. Maintaining a peaceful, loving, patience attitude allows your hair to grow to its fullest extent. How long it grows is entirely up to God. It's the "Thy will be done" way to wear your hair. I have no doubt that God sees you and your hair as beautiful at whatever length it grows.

What is in your heart is more important however, if the bible says we women's hair is our crowining glory and a cover, then just bear in mind, it didnt say dont cut it..or am I wrong..some women get head aches bcos of long heavy hair they cant wea

I think we should look more on the inside of a person than the outside. What does it matter if a woman keeps her hair long or short? Is a woman not cutting her hair any less of a Christian than a woman who has short hair?
---Katie on 1/21/08

Socialital context people. What society was this written to? It is not a commandment.
---dan on 1/21/08

Firstly, anybody's opinion about how you should interpret, and apply a Biblical truth to your life, should (in general) take a back seat to how God Himself tells you it should apply. Secondly, these particular verses are very simply stated, and those who are able to follow its directive, and who DO NOT are not following God's will for their lives. Those women, who's hair is not physically capable of growing long, are not obligated, to even try to apply it to their lives. What could be simpler?

I learned a LONG time ago that you should never judge a book by it's cover.
---sue on 1/4/08

A woman's outward appearance should reflect her inward love for God. However, our outward appearance does not affect how our hearts are. Think about the delima about circumcision- the Jews believed that men had to be circumcised to be right with God. Yet, in the new covenant, we learn that circumcision does not affect a person's relationship with God. What's inside is truly the important thing. Of course, you also have to take into account the time that the Bible was written and the cultural beliefs.
---Lindsey on 1/3/08

The Bible says that you should not cut your hair. 1 Cor. 11:3-16 Some people cant grow long hair. Some can. When you read this you'll see that your hair is given you for a covering. It is your glory.

I agree with you Tabitha, hair does not not make the woman! I have long curly hair. I get comments like its a weave, it too much, strighten it, then it will look better. People will always find some thing to talk about.

I am a Qualified stylist of 15yrs and thats fine for you to say someone does not look after their hair and that's the reason it's not long. You have genetic's on your side and so not one to judge with just that as qualifications. My friend your hair is short for a no of reasons and although care is a small factor it's not the only one. Genetic's determine how long your hair grows and also what you use and do and put into it. Even then there's a possibility your hair is just short by nature.

Melinda, 1 Cor 11:15 say that her hair is given for a covering. It is our glory! Why would anyone cut off any part of her own glory??? It causes us to have power- showing the power of obedience to the Word of God...does it attract angels? It will attract God's attention. Obedience always does.
Helen 5378, all the answers are found in the Bible. Women should have long hair- as a symbol of our marriage to Jesus. We are His bride.

I am 100% black and my hair touches my bra strap. The reason that you can't grow hair is not because you're black, its probably because (judging from the fact that you're ignorant enought to say something like that) you don't know how to take care of it.

this Christmas i wanted to give a meaningful gift.
i went to the beauty salon and had my long hair - which i had not really had shortened to any degree in 35 yrs - CUT off !!

does this make me any less of a woman? i dont FEEL any less of a woman INSIDE altho the outside of me now looks like a man.
but i did this for a reason, and God knows my heart:

you see, i did this in honor of my step-daughter, who is dying of cancer, and has lost her hair to chemo 3 different times.

for nearly 35 yrs i've had long hair. i wanted it that way since my mother wouldnt let me keep it long when i was young.

ive also been in many churches since my conversion at age 25. one minister told me, with angry eyes, "DONT EVER CUT YOUR HAIR!"

another man at church said, when he saw my hair, looking long, combed and clean, "Now I know why God says, 'a woman's hair is her glory." that was a nice compliment!
---diana on 12/22/07

The rest of the verse says that if you don't have long hair you are supposed to COVER your head with something when you pray or prophesy (teach, correct, instruct, admonish, etc).

Pual was writing to Christians in Greco - Roman surroundings. What was their custom? Woman with short hair were temple prostitutes and could be taken by any man, also was loose or short hair associated with ecstatic rituals in a number of worship practices of the pagans gods at the time. Woman with long hair meant that they were already taken (married woman), and could no be possessed by other man and were free for such practices. Long hair had the same meaning as a wedding ring.

God doesn't make an unfeminine woman. She is the essence of feminism. A woman's hair is not what makes her feminine it is her spirit. Black women's hair will grow, you just have to take care of it properly.

Also, why would God make you inferior to someone else? Black poeple do not have inferior hair! If God gave it to you, it must be divine. No one else has hair like ours!! Jesus had hair like wool, hmph, sounds good to me! Besides, before you go trying to have log hair for God, read all ten commandments and follow those (completely) first. Most of us have a hard time being Christ-like in our day to day lives. That should be number one, not being concerned with hair!!!

Rebecca, the different hair is for exactly the same reason as all other differences between human beings. Adam and Eve had, within them, a huge gene pool. Some of their children would have inherited certain genes and others would have inherited other genes. They intermarried because there were no other human beings then and differences would become accentuated or diluted depending on the genes of the one with whom they created children.

Women should lighten up a little, women often put a lot of [unnecessary] burdens on themselves. All a woman needs is to be clean & presentable, rather she has short, long, or no hair, young, middle aged, or senior, black,white,etc...A dab of perfume,a touch of lip color, [maybe] an accessory or two...this is the way it was with my Mom, simple. What I'm trying to say is, we shouldn't make things so complicated, life is too short. God Bless!

Chris, lol. Many African sisters have [naturally]long hair, some prefer short or even bald styles,Once again, different types of hair need specific care.I personally don't care much for long hair,I like short to medium length,it's easier to [maintain]& not as cumbersome, spending an hour or more on hair daily, just isn't my style at all. My older sister has 2 daughters, their hair grows like weeds, very long,YIKES! I prefer boys, lol, just kidding,I have one girl(3 yrs.old)& one boy(6 yrs.old),BTW.God Bless!

I need help. Could someone give me scriptures in the bible where it says that a black womans ancestary has God-given short hair? I would like to read those scriptures and study them. Thanks
---Chris on 4/6/07

1. m.p.a,

If it were a problem for me to have long hair, and God knew I desired to have long hair, and I read in his word that by natures standard a "WOMANS"... not black, white, asian, hispanic, BUT "A WOMANS" long hair is a glory to her...
---chis on 4/6/07

2. and I chose to believe HIS word, and pray, go by faith and BELIEVE that he could allow my hair to grow long (which he has), Why wouldn't you be happy for me and praise God for what he has done for me? Why would you even dare try and rebuke me for trying to encourage someone and testify to the goodness of God and what he can do? Why?

4. By the way, I am speaking for myself. I am aware not everyone wants long hair, not everyone wears weaves. BUT I SURE DID, AND I DON'T ANYMORE! Hallelujah!

Now, if you don't believe that God can do all things, such as grow a little ol black womans hair long...then, that's between you and him. As for me, I do and will continue to.

AND with that note, I am going to post a photo of me in the penpal section, so you can see the glory that God has placed on my head! Hallelujah! chria9758

A. One more thing m.p.a., When God revealed to me through his word, "does not nature teach that a womans long hair is her glory and given to her as a covering" I had absolutely no idea, that God could allow my hair to grow. But when I read his word in the bible, I took it for what it said, and believed.
---Chris on 4/6/07

B. Now, I was not investigating long hair, I was investigating the previous verses in the chapter pertaining to a women praying to God without a covering. I just happen to run across the latter verses in the chapter.

When I read, I believed, and God blessed me for my faith. We can not please God without faith.

C. I am aware of the IF in 1 Cor.11:15. But IF a woman have long hair, IT IS a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering. Despite the IF, I believed that God could make my hair grow, he did, and therefore (like Gods words says) IT IS a glory to me.

It does not make me anymore righteouss than someone else who is saved who has short, dark, blond, curly, or straight hair, but it sure did build my faith in God, and has given me a testimoney to help others..& it has. All glory be to God.

Chris, if, because of your ancestry, you were born with short hair, why would you think it right to pray for long hair? God made races with different features, eyes, skin colour, hair type, height etc. Should we pray for a change in hair colour or to be 3 inches taller. God didn't get it wrong. We are the way HE made us.

Ebony....Concentrate on the woman you are within and the woman you are in Christ instead of your hair length. Sometimes when we are first Christians or coming back to the Lord after years of being gone, we want to overcompensate. You don't have to do anything physical. It is all spiritual. My hair is short by choice and it doesn't make me un-feminine at all. God knows we are women. He doesn't need our hair length to tell him that.
---Susie on 4/1/07

(1.)Ebony, There are different types of hair, and they need different types of care. People in my family have all kinds of hair, kinky, curly, straight, wavy, as the result of our mixed ethnic background. We never say one type of hair is better than another, only be happy you [have] hair, and work with what you got.
---Mrs._Morgan on 4/1/07

Your hair is your crowning glory, regardless of its natural length. The Bible was more concerned with women shaving their heads or deliberately cutting their hair to look like men. Some early Christians were from Ethiopia and other African locations. These women would have had hair like yours and would still have been beautiful in God's eyes.
---lorra8574 on 4/1/07

(2.)Ebony, There are pluses and minuses to ALL kinds of hair. If you want to grow your hair long,Read the Book "Good Hair" by Lonnice Brittenum Bonner, this book shows that "Good Hair" is hair that is cared for [properly] according to it's special type & needs.

Also in terms of the Bible, people often take the hair issue out of context, please don't worry about that. God Bless!

God is concerned with your heart. Yet He also provides counsel that women should look like women and men look like men. Most women are able to grow hair to a length that sets them apart as women so that they look like women rather than little men. I'm sure the sister asking the question above can wear her "glory" in a manner that is longer more feminine than the boys in the chior ;) If medical conditions make this impossible the Lord understands.

Ebony the bible does not say that a woman is 'supposed' to have long hair. 1Cr 11:15 says "But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering. Some races simply do not have long hair and, as God created all races, He knows that, which might explain the IF.

Eventually, I stopped taking the hair, nail, skin vitamins and went only by faith, my hair is still growing.

By the way Ebony, I didn't meen to get a little, if not alot off of the subject. I just wanted to be helpful.

Ebony here is a scripture...

But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenace, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart. 1 Samuel 16:7

God is concerned with our heart.

Your beautiful and feminine no matter how long your hair is.
---Chris on 4/1/07

I wanted to share the previous information with you, because it is what God did for me, and I am very greatful. And I believe if a woman wants long hair, and if Gods word says that a womans long hair is her glory, then I believe if that woman believes God and his word, then he can give it to her.

Love to you.
---chris on 4/1/07

Ebony, welcome to the family!

Please study 1 Cor 11 in its full context. Study what was going on in the church at that time and Paul's reasons for making the statements he did on women and hair. I believe you'll find a larger point being made.

Further, being black doesn't automatically mean that your hair won't grow. Lots of black women have long hair and lots of women of all races wear short styles and still look feminine...even Christian women. ;)

When I prayed God showed me that I had been abusing my hair with diffnt. chemicals, I wasn't eating enough nutrituous foods to help my to hair grow, and hair was dry; lack of ointment....
---Chris on 4/1/07

Ebony,
Self image is very important because how we see ourselves is reflected in everything we do. Weaves are worn for many reasons. I personally felt just as feminine with a two inch afro, as I do now that I've grown my hair past my shoulders. If you feel you are more feminine wearing a weave thats fine. But don't let that scripture be an excuse. God want's us to be happy with the way He made us, whatever the length well groomed hair is always feminine.

Long hair is a glory to a woman but it does not say cuting your hair is a sin so you must keep it long. God made you the person you are, hair and all and he looks at you through love and love only sees you as perfect in its sight. I love long hair but when mine gets long it is heavy and I get terrible headaches which keep me bedfast,God doesn't want that for me when cutting gives relief.God is a loving Father to us all.

We can learn from them and how to be great men and women of God. Are you out there?

Ebony; No a woman can wear her hair any way she likes. I have long blonde hair and I have been growing it for 7 years now. I like long hair on me, but some people look better with short hair. I don't use the creamrense because it is too hard on human hair.
