Do Christian Prophets Exist

Do Christian prophets exist? I have never seen anyone who claims to be a prophet do the things the Old Testament prophets could do. Should we consider these people false Christian prophets?

Look at the word Paul wrote. He said there would be prophets, evangelis pastors, teachers, and, apostles for the perfecting of the Saints for the work of the ministry. So what finger do we cut off the hand of God to make it fit the glove of our religion?

//My bible tells all what is going to happen in the end times. It is already the end times.//

What is the proof of that? About the only unique thing to happen is that Jews have been and are going back to their promised land.
---Rod4Him on 5/1/14

One of the things that has come to pass. Is a false revival that depends on emotion. But the people talk a good game but there is no true godliness.

No true searching of their heart to get rid of sin. Many who call themselves Christians live no different then most of the world.

No time is spend in Bible study and prayer. No reaching out to others to tell them about JESUS and warn them of the day of Judgment.

Many of the Churches are Laodicean and happy with getting rich and not helping others.

One current famous evangelist was shown to have taken money for setting up an orphanage and then never did so. But his follower did not care as he blasted 20/20 for telling the truth about him.

//Maybe so, but prophets warn people of events that are soon to come to pass.//

What events are you suggesting are "soon to come to pass?"
---Rod4Him on 4/29/14

Agreed Kathr. Revelation does reveal new Knowledge not specifically stated in the Old. But then John is an Apostle as well as a Prophet.
---Samuelbb7 on 4/24/14

Steveng, the two witnesses warn people of those things Jesus told John would come to pass and to repent.

Those things are already spoken in Matthew 24-25 by Jesus and were more clearly defined in detail to John.

These things were also spoken in the OT, Zechariah 12-14 for one. Then Jesus reiterated in Matthew 24-25, and reiterates AGAIN in more detail to John in revelation of things TO come. John wrote Rev in 95ad, so they did not come to pass in 70ad as some believe. The two witnesses do not have additional things to add. They are reiterating what has already been spoken.
---kathr4453 on 4/18/14

Prophets may warn of events not mentioned in Scripture.

But prophets can never replace or contradict scripture. They must agree with all those who went before.

This is how we can tell true prophets from the false.

All the LDS leaders claim to be prophets. But they also state their words are above and should be followed instead of the Bible.

kathr4453: "PropheSY is listed first, than exhortation, and so on. PropheSY is only reiterating what has already been spoken. There is no NEW propheCY to be reported."

Maybe so, but prophets warn people of events that are soon to come to pass. Read the activities of the last two prophets mentioned in revelation.
---Steveng on 4/17/14

OT prophets didn't understood what God spoke through them. Isaiah 53 for example.

Or Daniel for another. So many prophecies still to come to pass. Were end times prophecies spoken in the OT? Absolutely. Has Isaiah 14 already come to pass? NO. Zechariah 12-14 along with so many others....Isaiah 60-66 have yet to come to pass. No new prophecies are going to upstage those. The two prophets In Revelations will reiterate those prophecies in the OT. So it's important to know the WHOLE Bible to know truth from Lies. The anit_Christ will come spouting off all sorts of this and that with lying signs and wonders that millions upon millions will believe....why, they perish for lack of knowledge in truth. They will believe the lie.
---kathr4453 on 4/16/14

1 Corinthians 14:3 "But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort."

To the question, have you seen a christian edify, exhort and comfort? You've seen a prophet.
Biblical prophets were highly common sense people who could see where people were 'trending' as it were.
---Nana on 4/15/14

Steveng, today we have what is called the gift of prophesy. May also want to revisit Hebrews 1-2.

PropheSY is listed first, than exhortation, and so on. PropheSY is only reiterating what has already been spoken. There is no NEW propheCY to be reported. All is in scripture from Genesis to Revelation. God has told us everything we need to know already in His word.

I know someone who got caught in that scam, made a so called prophetic announcement that did not come true....totally humbled himself, and ran like heck from that kind of ministry now speaking out against it.
---kathr4453 on 4/15/14

The Main and most important job of the Prophet is to tell his followers to do right. Yes this edifies the church by getting the people to do what they are supposed to be doing.

But most so called prophets today go around finding some novel thing to teach or telling people how great they are and how that so called prophet needs money which if you send them money you can get rich.

Most modern prophets are thinking big houses and nice cars. Not caring for the poor and spreading the Gospel.

Read the prophets of the Old Testament. Because they told the truth they were often hated and lied about and scorned for telling the truth.
---Samuelbb7 on 4/15/14

Prophets have two jobs: one, to tell the world of what is about to occur and, two, to edify the church. (1 Corinthians 14:3)

Prophets, even today, are part of the true church. (1 Corinthians 12:28, Ephesians 4:11)

If there are true prophets and teachers there are also false prophets and teachers. (2 Peter 2:1)

There were prophets in the early church. (Acts 11:27, Acts 13:1, Ephesians 3:5 )

The christians who believe that prophets don't exist in today's world will celebrate the death of the last two prophets not only because they tormented the people that dwelt on the earth, but also that they didn't conform to denominaional church's doctrine.
---Steveng on 4/14/14

Anyone who knows the Bible can call himself a prophet. He can predict what the Bible already has predicted. He can also say a church should do this or that. He can tell others of things that will come to pass that has already been spoken of in Scripture.
Anyone of us can do that. In reality there is many doing that today, denomination or not. They have dreams just like everyone else. They can say God told them just like everyone else. But they are not prophets as those in the Bible. Those told of things that did come to pass. No one knows the future but God.
---Luke on 4/14/14

Dear Elle

I was born again from agnosticism over 42 years ago. I do not see how you can deny what the Bible teaches.

I joined the Seventh day Adventist church and have been told and yelled out and derided by others for doing so. I have read many books by critics of us. But the HOLY SPIRIT has always lead me to follow the Bible and JESUS.

Unless shown by Scripture or common reason on this I will stand and can accept no other way.

Agape to you.

As an addition to my earlier post of 3/17/11, prophets do not belong to any denominational church. They are free of their rituals, traditions, ways of living and meager interpretations of their bible. This is the reason most christians will kill the last two prophets because they do not conform to any denominaionsl teachings.

Prophets do exist since the time of Jesus. It is one of the duties of christians (Acts 13:1, 1 Corinthians 12:28-29, and Ephesians 4:11). Also, if there are true prophets there are also false prophets (2 Peter 2:1).

If you don't understand what is explicitly written in 1 Corinthians 12:28-29 and Ephesians 4:11, how would you expect to understand anything in the bible?

I was brought up with my mother reading White's Patriarchs and Prophets and learned much of the Bible.

However, when I became born of God's Spirit, I came into understanding of God's Word and found much of EG Whites teachings were false.

It is no wonder that when people come to know Lord and study His word that many leave Adventism just after a few years in that system.

Dear Elle

At least you know the source of your attack. I read the Book long ago. I have read other books against E.G.White also. I have read more then 40 of her books. I read the arguments on both sides.

Most read one side of an argument because they made up their minds in advance.

I was not a Christian but was an agnostic. I had only read books promoting no god. But I was challenged by a Seventh day Adventist to read the other side and did so. Two years latter I joined the church.

I have read books on why my church is wrong such as Kingdom of the Cults and Four Major Cults by Hoekema.

I am here to discuss the Bible. Not what someone wrote about the Bible or people. So please direct questions.

All you need to do to see the truth that none of her prophecies ever came true is to read Dudley Canright's books (Seventh Day Adventism denounced) as he was a very close associate of the Whites and high up in the hierarchy of the Adventist church.

Samuel, Ellen G. White made many prophecies which never came to pass. Rob

I do not know which prophicies you are referring to. She spoke of the Soon Coming of JESUS and told people to always be ready. Many read this as saying she was predicting JESUS would come soon. But the few times she said he would come soon were conditional prophecies.

She talked about the church finishing the work of spreading the Gospel. Like the Conditional Prophecy of Jonah we who read these understand because of her other statements these were conditional. If you have one please tell me where it is so I can read it.

I have read over 40 of her books and books both for and against her. Have you read any her books or have only read one side?

I have gotten a word from The Lord many times through different Christian Prophets. Praise God! All of which came true, all of which were positive blessings that came true in my future. Unlike a "psychic" or the fortune telling spirit found in the New Testament, who call on ungodly sources, these blessings about my future that came true were from The Lord. Just like in the Old Testament! Praise Jesus.

I believe there are true christian prophets today. Not only prophets there are evangelists, apostles, bishops and other positions in the body of Christ. Sometimes we as christians forget this: we all are ministers of Christ. We do have the authority and power to bring many to Christ. This is what is really needed, regardless, of what titles we do or do not hold. How to tell if a prophet is a true man of God: if his/her prophecy comes true, then, the prophet is of God.
---Robyn on 3/5/11

I believe there are individuals in the office of a prophet today, but we have to make sure they are truly called by God, so as not to be deceived. I had a scary experience with a so-called Christian prophet online, so be careful and judge them by the Word, not by their own self-promotion.

Yes. It comes down to believing that what your eyes do see. God is not dead, and his almighty power is still working daily inside of every born-again Christian. Even when our leader Jesus Christ worked miracles in front of the people there were still the hard-hearted and stiff-necked dissers whom blasphemed him: and the bad-mouthers went down to their graves, with their foolish dissings still upon their lips, to be sealed for their eternal separation from the Lord.

Luk 21:14 Settle it therefore in your minds not to meditate beforehand how to answer,
Luk 21:15 for I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which none of your adversaries will be able to withstand or contradict.

So who is the prophet here? Is it you or is it He who gives you words and wisdom? If Jesus fulfilled all prophecy, then why do you need more prophets?

We may say some things that we could not have possibly think to say, but should we take credit for them and call ourselves prophets?
---aka_joseph on 4/9/10

Not a chance! Because it would mean that Christ has failed. The church has been established for some time now, even unto splitting and many going their own way, focussing on their own ideology and so removed from Christ. We're increasing the abuse of the Age of Grace. Many can hardly see the Way any more, but it has been prepared. Many have taken their gifts into the world and are using them for their own devices. Backsliders prefer to find a prophet and so steal their way into Heaven, right? So God now needs to resend prophets!? Is God's Word and Name not enough? Haven't we been given everything in Christ Jesus? There are countless in the Spirit who speak as though prophesying, even so, a few want to be glorified as prophets.

Some of God's modern prophets just hang around. Some do nothing just die and go on to heaven. Some spends their time waiting on God. Some will be placed on the front-line. Some are called into special work. Some prophets of Bible-times only spoked a few times and never again. Were not mentioned in the Bible. Some will die a violent death. It all depends on God, my friends. Ah Jesus. NOTE: I actually had a conversation with God on this the otherday.

I agree michael_e. Revelation tells us the testimony of JESUS is the Spirit of Prophecy.

Revelation 19:10
And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.

So, if one wants to claim to be a NT Prophet, this is the requirement.

Who has the testimony of Jesus? Those who proclaim the CROSS and manifest in them the finished works of Christ. Are you included IN HIS FINISHED WORK? Well, we all are. Those who reject Him, will go into everlasting darkness, and those who believe the Gospel will testify to the power of the Cross.

Yes! There are Christian prophets today, ture prophets who follow the Bible and false prophets who don't.I've met both,Some true and false. How do you know if they if they're t/f? The Bible: 1Cor 14:37 If any man think himself to be a prophet, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord. You will only know a prophet to be t/f depending on their how they acknowledge Biblical teachings. True prophet will completely acknowledge the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Such prophets can do things that OT prophets could do (prophesy and heal sick)through Jesus Christ Alone.False prophets are those who attempt to mix in ideas from Buddhism, Islam, or any idea that is not in the Bible.Lastly read John 4:1.

There are an overabundance of individuals with titles. Without words lining up with the Word, it's one of the biggest errors people make. They are operating on their own. When you step out without the power of God, you step out into an area without God's blessing. It's an issue of "ownership" and lording those titles over others. Pride. A pride that kills ministry and causes others to despise prophecy.
---Michelle on 11/5/07

Christian prophets. What do we do? Some of us, by the power of God and with or without music say only what God tells us to say. You feel the words coming to your mouth and out they come. I believe there are people with the gift of prophecy.According to Romans 12 and 1Cor. But I do not believe there is an "office" of a prophet as in the OT. When prophets gave a prophecy( choose any of them) they had no room to try to understand what God was saying .They had to tell wahtever thus says the Lord. All prophecy is sealed by the Bible so there is no new prophecy because we would be adding a new book to the Bible

Pat Robertson, Oral roberts, Billy Graham, Benny Hinn, Joyce Meyer and everyone else may be sincere in what they teach, but they are false teachers. Prophets, no way. When the bible said they would deceive many, I see why. People follow them like lambs to the slaughter.

And even if you are a true prophet yourself, Each prophet has different personalities ect. Remember, we all love quoting scriptures even the elect can be fooled unbelievers don't stand a chance.
---catherine on 6/15/07

Steveng may not agree with this, perhaps he might. The prophets/prophetic ministry will become very prominent in days not far off. Prophet are one who speak for God. Though it is a very 'alone' walk, they are not popular in churches either. A true prophet is one who has learnt from much brokeness, they will grow more into the likeness of Christ as they consistently seek to become humble, wise, disciplined and completely empty of themself: dying to self, daily.
---Prodigal24 on 6/15/07

They cannot be used, if they cannot be trusted: for the Lord's work is most affective in humility, absent of pride, they are commonly misunderstood, make many mistakes in their 'growing' (budding prophets), need wise and corrective counsel from their Pastor, 'a man after God's heart type', they must know the Law, be submitted to authority, never attract attention to their gift, only the giver of their gift, Christ. Their heart, 'repentance and salvation'.

There are prophets across the u.s. speaking words about moving towards holiness and speak of false teachings within the churches. Many are saying that money has distorted Christianity and turned it into a religion about prosperity. Prophets are speaking out against millionaire television preachers who do not write thier own sermons. They are unpopular and while possessing the highest of giftings, they are impoverished. No. The Bible gives it's own tests for prophets; such as they may exhibit supernatural strength or stop breathing while in vision. But the fundamental test of a true prophet is given in Isa 8:20: "to the law and to the prophets, if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them." Most modern televangelists do not even uphold the original Ten Commandments, and are thus false prophets.

1. What DOCTRINE comes with it?
2. What is fruit of the sign in the lives of the people involved?

I've seen "wandering prophets"--one in particular, who actually denied the Resurrection of Christ, claiming that "He didn't have a physical body, and the Holy Spirit needs a physical body to manifest through" (the working premise of demonic possession, btw), and people were lapping this up.

From what I have seen and many others here in the US and around the world see yes, they are false prophets and Benny Hinn, Paul Crouch, Pat Robertson and Jesse Jackson are leading the pack!
