People Scared Of Holy Ghost

I believe in speaking in tongues is a gift from God and they haven't ceased. Why do you think people are so against the power of the Holy Ghost? Are they afraid or don't understand God's power?

\\Most Christians don't believe in the Resurrection. They believe that they can go immediately to heaven (or hell) as a spook without being resurrected.
\\

I was talking specifically about the Resurrection of Christ here.

The belief that the soul exists in an intermediate state in a temporarily disembodied form enjoying a foretaste of bliss or punishment is NOT opposed to the General Resurrection at the time of the Last Judgement, though SDA wants to think so.

Darlene, I know what God has shown me, including people being TAUGHT how to speak in tongues. If it's something that can be TAUGHT, it's obviously not a gift of God.

Glory to Jesus Christ!

I see people who claim to be saved and needing others to buy them a Second jet and more mansions. They speak in tongues and preach but they live for self and money.

Speaking in tongue can be faked. These false teachers do it all the time.

We need to follow the Bible. Their fruit of greed and hypocrisy show they are false teachers. Read the book of Jude.
---Samuelbb7 on 8/8/16

Cluny I see that you would like very much for me to be wrong about tongues but God has taught me in the Bible and in my life what tongues are really for and that is to serve God and minister as God enables and for His purpose. I'm sorry to have to tell you God will never give you anything you don't believe in,it takes a surrendering Faith in God to receive from God. God will honor what you want and that is to avoid God's Gift of the Baptism of the Holy Ghost with tongues. No matter what you say about others and tongues you can't erase what God is doing in another person's life.

Cluny: "One for coffee, one for tea."

Ah, the two-fisted drinker.

"some of them did not believe in the Resurrection"

\\Cluny: Why did you buy the mug twice?\\

One for coffee, one for tea.

10 points, Jerry! :-)

Darlene, First Church of Corinth could speak in tongues until the cows came home, but some of them did not believe in the Resurrection.

Was it the REAL Holy Spirit that made them speak in tongues?

Glory to Jesus Christ!
---Cluny on 8/6/16

Cluny I don't think I said you personally didn't know the power of tongues,it must have been someone else. I knew you had been through all of that. I do want to say I never spoke in tongues except to obey God,I was and am a servant and know my God's voice and also recognize when it isn't God in others so certainly I would not yield to such myself. I know for all God's real, Satan has a copy therefore we are to be aware and careful who we respond to. I have always from childhood feared to displease God and would never do anything that isn't Him.
---Darlene_1 on 8/3/16

Cluny: Why did you buy the mug twice?

Darlene: The gift of tongues is for the edifying of the church, for the spreading of the gospel, etc., and not for entertainment or to "prove" a person's approval with God.

I have heard of modern missionaries who have traveled to remote peoples and were instantly able to converse in the local language. That is the God-given gift of tongues.

According to the Bible, the "proof" of one's having been given the Holy Spirit is not tongues - it is the fruits of the spirit.

---jerry6593 on 8/3/16

Darlene, the "spirits' gave the ancient Greek oracles the ability to speak in tongues, too, which got interpreted. When my own computer stops acting wonky, I'll say some other things about this. As far as your saying I don't know the power of "Holy Ghost tongues," been there, done that, bought the mug, tee-shirt, bumper sticker, button, refrigerator magnet, and mug.
---Cluny on 8/2/16

It is Acts 2:4 where it tells us the Spirit gives utterance of tongues. God will not hold those guiltless who pretend to speak in tongues for He has given tongues for His children to minister to the Body, speak directly to Him,and speak in tongues"building yourself up in the most Holy Spirit"which is tongues. God gives tongues for us to minister and it is the Holy Ghost who enables us to speak. God uses them to speak through us by the Holy Ghost and we must remember we are a servant of God doing what pleases Him and do all for God's Glory.
---Darlene_1 on 7/31/16

I don't think people are against the power of the Holy Ghost/Spirit, but don't believe people claiming assistances by the Holy Spirit when speaking in tongues.

I believe speaking in tongues is possible.

There are some who do pretend to speak in tongue.

I know because my friends have admitted they have faked speaking in tongues in the past. Because they were afraid of being judged if they didn't speak in tongues every Sunday.
---Nicole_Lacey on 7/30/16

Rebecca: Respectfully, the Bible admonishes:

1Jn 4:1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

If the "tongues" gift is not used to translate existing languages, or if it does not edify the church, then the spirit involved is not of God.

---Jerry6593 on 7/22/16

I think YOU are the one who doesn't understand God's power, Rebecca_D.

Lasheena I've got a better one than that. The Holy Ghost comes to live in us and empower us to speak in tongues, give Prophecy and many other Gifts of the Spirit. I must add nothing scary about that I have to shout Glory to God.
---Darlene_1 on 7/21/16

I get scared because the Holy Ghost walks through walls and goes Boooooo!
---Lasheena on 7/19/16

The AV uses the term "Holy Ghost" for "Holy Spirit" based on an obsolete usage of the word "ghost" (from Middle English and Anglo-Saxon, originally meaning "breath," "spirit", cf. the German Geist).
Using "ghost" may scare some.
---Gabrielle on 5/18/08

Jana: yes there are some (alot) of people out there whom are afraid of God's power. Afraid of what it might do if that power got ahold on them. Their afraid of what others might think if they spoke in tongues or received another gift.

what exactly is your question? If it is about speaking in tongues, then I will say this, I believe in speaking in tongues and Speaking in tongues is speaking in known language, not some unintelligble silly language..sorry 4saying this..God is God of order, not nonsense..Noone is afraid of the H/G. why would anyone be?
---jana on 5/30/07

I think it's because people try to reason things out in their mind The carnal mind cannot understand the things of the Spirit of God, because they are spiritually appraised. Unless one has the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, you will not understand tongues because they are spiritual. Too many Christians are trying to reason tongues out and you can't reason out spiritual things, you need the Baptism of the Holy Spirit to understand them. The carnal mind cannot.
---donna5634 on 5/30/07

Oh, I'm not afraid of the Holy Spirit by no means. I was speaking about people whom don't allow tongues, laying on hands, inside their church. About 3 years ago, my sister went to a Baptist church and a young man had cancer in the throat. God moved upon her to anoint and pray for him. She said, Lord they don't believe that way. He bid her again. She did and that man was healed. It dumbfounded alot of them, but they believe now. Some people are afraid of the gifts because they haven't been taught.

Paul also said he spoke in tongue and do not despise speaking in tongues. You are very aware of what you are doing when you speak in tongue. The Holy Spirit is very intelligent and a gentleman. He is always in order. He never leads us wrong. When I need strength and power to pray or to carry out witnessing or any sort of spiritual help. I call on Holy Spirit to fill me. I can do a much better job in the spirit than I can in the flesh. I praise God for tongues. Hallelujah!

The Holy Ghost is friendly, like Casper the friendly ghost. The Holy Ghost will not harm you, she/he is a teacher, a comforter. Do not be afraid of the Holy Spirit.

People fear what they do not understand. The Holy Spirit is a messenger of God. God put the spirit into the individual, his breath and words...He or she is able to teach people the way to God.

*Matthew, when you see confusion in the church the answer or solution is not always to leave, but pray for order. God wants his gifts to operate and flow. Pray for your leader to recieve desernment and proper order.*

I see what you are saying, but only if they are true tongues. Pray for discernment. If they aren't true tongues, start running. Not all tongues are of God.

Sue: If I go into my prayer closet and I pray to God, Satan is going to do everything he can to distract me. When one speaks in tongues, their spirit is talking directly to God and Satan can't understand what is said. It is like the Holy Spirit is wrapped around the believer completely, and noting can interfer. Several times a person would speak in tongues, and my Pastor has always interupt what was said. confusion is not of God. If one is speaking in tongues try the spirit to see if their of God.
---Rebecca_D on 4/26/07

I agree, God wants the church (people) to be in order. To come together in one mind and one accord. God is trying to put the churches (people) in order but the people are stubbron and do things their way. And their way is by schudeling every minute that goes on in the church. God wants people to be free in him. To let him be God lives. To break out of their shell step out of the boat and let God be God. People are like turtles, when something good from God goes on, they hide their in their shell.
---Rebecca_D on 4/26/07

Matthew, when you see confusion in the church the answer or solution is not always to leave, but pray for order. God wants his gifts to operate and flow. Pray for your leader to recieve desernment and proper order. The Corinthian Church was filled with gifts but no order. Paul spoke to the church of Corinth to address this problem and he said that love was greater then every gift!

why do people have to take communion, there is a lot of questions not answered for one reason because God says so.

When I hear somebody speaking 'in tounges' it sure sounds like a lot of confusion.

Most tongues spoken today are not Holy Spirit tongues. Paul said that we need interpreters when we speak in tongues. He also said we must speak in turns. If you see people speaking tongues all at the same time and no interpretation it is time to leave that Church.
---Matthew on 4/26/07

I saw someone TEACHING people how to speak in tongues. If it's something that can be taught, then it's not a gift of the Holy Spirit, but a TECHNIQUE.

Clearly this person was not teaching tongues. Tongues are intiated by the will of God and not ourselves. He "lets us know" when he wants to speak in tongues. Happens most often while praising God. Anyone who says they can speak in tongues whenever they feel are deceived.
---Matthew on 4/26/07

2)
Anyone who says they can teach you how to speak in tongues is basically teaching you glossalalia or worse an evil Spirit will take advantage of that and start speaking through you. The gifts are given by God's permission and will and cannot be iniated by us. The main we reason we se so much glossalaia is because people just open their mouth and speak in tongues whenever they want(it isn't true tongues).
---Matthew on 4/26/07

Forgive me if this has been asked before but please tell me WHY would the Holy Spirit make a person want to talk funny?

If the tongues are used as we are instructed then there is no confusion. There should be interpetation and talking in turn. If not it's time to find a new Church.

Sue: "Why not just speak in our regular God-given language if we want to communicate to God?"

Worldly language is very limited. It cannot possibly reveal what is truly on our hearts. Speaking in tongues transcends worldly language. It is the tongue of the spirit.

**The proof you are seeking can only come from the Holy Spirit.**

Well, He's been strangely silent for decades on this issue, then.

AT a big famous Pentecostal Church over 30 years ago, I saw someone TEACHING people how to speak in tongues. If it's something that can be taught, then it's not a gift of the Holy Spirit, but a TECHNIQUE.

Curtain: You do like to spread rumors don't you. Making accusations is certainly not Godly.

I invite you to spend a Saturday with me and see what I do and the people I meet. I'm really well known in my neighborhood - from business people as well as the homeless and kids. Most of the kids I hang around with anymore are the children of parents I use to tutor/teach (boy, did I reveal my age or what?). I leave my home at 5:45am and don't usually get home until 7pm. You may contact me at penpals.

Jack: There is only one gift of tongues. And it is from God. 1 Cor 12:10-30, 14:2-40. Christ made a promise to the believers that they will speak in an unknown tongue. Joel 2:28, Mk 16:17. And it was fulfilled on the day of Pentecost in Acts 2, 10:46, 19:6. The correct meaning of tongues is glotta or glossa. When one falls out in the spirit, they drank a new wine. I know that when the power of the Holy Ghost comes upon a person, because their spirit bares with my spirit. That is how we come into one mind.

1st cliff. I think you would have had the same opinion if you would have been there on the day of Pentecost. Some on that day mocked too, thinking the Apostles were drunk. They were, but it wasn't with wine. If you were correct then there would be no instructions as to it's proper uses to the Church. As for dancing and laughing, (and I'll add raising the hands and shouting), all are Scripturally proper ways of worship that many do not agree with.
---john on 4/23/07

I believe most of tongues spoken today are not from the Holy Spirit. However I know better than to assume all tongues aren't from the Holy Spirit. Don't use experience and what you have seen to make a decision on this subject. The possibilty of one blaspheming the Holy Spirit should be enough for people to at least remain undecided on the subject.(Matthew 12:22-33)
---Mattthew on 4/22/07

I believe heartedly that God gives the gift of tongues to people today. I also believe that a person does practice speaking in tongues, which is not of God. Speaking in tongues comes from God. And to me it is the power of the Holy Ghost working through that person. They can say it is from God, but without that power it isn't of God. I haven't spoken in tongues but that isn't my desire to do so. Alot of people argue with me because of what and how I believe. I back up with scripture but still they argue.

Doug: I'm not scared of this gift. I know that when a person becomes born again, the Holy Spirit comes in and abides there. That is totally different than what I'm talking about. I understand this gift is from God. I just don't understand why a person disbelieves this when it is in the bible, along with laying on hands, anointing with oil, and the other gifts. Some of the Baptists I know do not believe in these gifts. If they can't believe all of God's word, then they shouldn't believe any of it.

**The answer is both.People don't understand the power of the Person of the Holy Spirit.**

Who says it's REALLY the Holy Spirit making people speak in tongues?

THAT has not yet been satisfactorily demonstrated.

People in Corinth were sectarians, had their own favorite parachurch ministries, lived in incest with their own step-mothers, and didn't even believe in the Resurrection.

But they could speak in tongues till the cows came home.

Think about it.
---Jack on 4/22/07

Sometime people are so skeptical they miss the truth. That was me. Everything the Holy Spirit did that didn't line up with the way I knew Him was thrown out as demonic. Until one day some people prayed over me to receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Things changed when that happened. Trying to convince people of the power of God without them having the baptism is very diffucult.

The answer is both.People don't understand the power of the Person of the Holy Spirit. And people are afraid of Him. What people don't have they do not understand. But, oh, God's power, it enables us to serve Him. We have no strength or no power of our own. We Believers depends on God and His power and His strength. And it is wonderful. "Why do you think people are so against the power of the Holy Ghost?' I do not. I believe we all have a desire to rest in His power & to channel that power. However I do not believe glossolalia to be that channel. I believe it to be faith operating in love. " Are they afraid or don't understand God's power?" Neither. There is no fear in love or faith. As far as truly understanding the Fathers power, I would say none of us do, His power is incomprehensible to the finite mind, it is infinite.

I have questions along this topic. Why would anyone want to converse with our Father in vocalizations that one does not understand themselves? Would it not be more rewarding & auspicious to relate to Him sincerely from the heart? Can a "language" spoken with out understanding be sincerely utter? Would in not be more conducive to ones good to leave prayer to the Spirit within when we do not know how to pray as we ought, with groanings that can not be uttered? (Rom.8:26)

Satan has already entered almost every church in the world. The Word of God is watered down to the point where spiritualism seems more enticing. Speaking in tongues, healing, etc give more power to God. Most pastors get their sermons from corporate headquarters, never allowing the Holy Spirit to speak through them. One time I spoke in front of a Lutheran congregation a week before Easter...
---Steveng on 4/21/07

...There were rumors of a certain person being spread throughout the church. Rumors that weren't true. So that Sunday morning, a week before Easter, I spoke not about Easter, but what the Spirit wanted me to say. People in the church were confused and didn't understand what I was talking about because they had their mind set on something about Easter. Something they needed to hear not something they wanted to hear. Chuches don't allow their pastors to edifiy their congregations anymore.

I think people often are afraid of what they don't understand as a result they find reasons not to believe and even come against that with a fury. It is evident these people don't understand because the mind can't comprehend the things of the Spirit. They look at the Spirit with the fleshly mind, human reasoning, and it isn't tuned in to the HG without the infilling of the HG. They often dismiss tongues as the initial sign of the infilling and therefore find excuses not to seek HG.
