Mark says He was crucified at the 3rd hour. John says He was still with Pilate at the 6th hour. The Word is not contradictory. It is apparent that someone is using a different way of telling "time." Matthew was Jewish, writing to the Jews, Mark, to Christians in Rome, Luke, to the Gentile Christians, and John also wrote (mostly) to the non-Jewish Believers. My point is that we need to stop wasting our energy bickering amongst ourselves! We need to unite together, and go out into the world, live for God, do everything in love, with Christ as our Lord, and always be prepared to share the reasons for our faith and hope(Jn.17, Matt.28-18-20, 1Ch.16:14, 1Pet. 3:15).
This holy day, we remember that He completed it all. Glory to God!

jesus died on the cross because of our sin.people shoud think what jesus had done to nail on the cross just for you and me to.
---watisoni_mataki on 4/1/10

Because of His merciless beatings, Our Savior died in six hours. It generally took around, I think, 10,11,12 hours for a convicted criminal to die on a cross....A most digusting, horrible, form of punishment for any human. Yet, this was the choice for our God for the redeemed....No wonder God does not take kindly to anyone who turns back. A WARNING: YOU DON'T JUST QUIT ON GOD. You don't just say to God, "I quit". You may on occasions threaten to quit, But not really mean it. Perhaps in the heat of the moment. Anyways, God changes our mind for us. Everytime. My God!

According to the scriptures, Jesus was on the cross from the 6th hour (12 noon) to the 9th hour (3:00pm), and darkness was over all the land (Matthew 27:45-50+ Mark 15:33-37+ Luke 23:44-46+ John 19:14-18,28-30), then Jesus gave up his ghost: and in the evening before the sabbath began, Joseph of Arimathaea took the body down to put in the tomb.

Bob, I already translated this from the original Greek, and the Scripture I posted is the accurate literal translation. The Greek word is "wra", transliterated as "hora", and not only means "hour" but according to it's context of use it also means "time" or "day" or "season" or "occurence". And we know that it rightly means "time" here, because in John's witness he specifically says it was becoming the 6th hour that he was going to be crucified, and not the 3rd hour: lit.Gk: "Thereupon being preparation of passover, and while towards the sixth hour, then he says to the Jews, Here your King." John 19:14.

Eloy, you have a mistranslation, for it means the third hour. Check your Hebrew and Greek interliner or a wordstudy Bible.
---Bob on 3/6/10

Helen, That is a mistranslation, the verse actually reads: lit.Gk: "Thereupon being third time, and crucified him." Mark 15:25. This is referring to Jesus being the third person at this time to be nailed to a cross, with the two robbers being nailed before him.
---Eloy on 3/2/10

Mark 15:25 And it was the third hour, and they crucified him. (9am)
Mark 15:34a And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice (3pm)
Matthew 27:57 When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, named Joseph
Mark 15:42 And now when the even was come, because it was the preparation, that is, the day before the sabbath (6pm)
Jesus' body was on the cross about 9 hours.
Jesus was alive on the cross about 6 hours.

Their time was not counted like ours. The first century Jewish thinking on time was different. Don't forget they did not wear wristwatches and sixty minutes was not an hour. Back than there was the 3rd hour which consist of the beganning of the day 6-9am the 6th hour 9-12noon, the 9th hour 12-3pm and finnally the 12th hour 3-6pm. According to our century time we would not have an accurated length of hours (60 minutes)that Jesus Christ was on the cross. Because, their days went by a sequence of what we would call three hours in four sections of the day.
Our God says , "Are there not twelve hours of daylight." John11:9

Sorry, but you guys are thinking like 21st century North Americans. In order to understand the Messiah's "week" of hours on the Cross, you'll need to think like 1st century Jews.

Once again, from the third hour to the ninth hour inclusive is 7 hours, not 6. Do the math, guys.
---Arthur on 9/1/09

About six hours. Because of the torture those wicked men in power gave Him. The merciless beatings He received, He was only on the cross for six hours.
---catherine on 8/31/09

Lets try american math :)

3rd hr. to 4th is one
4th hr. to 5th is two
5th hr. to 6th is three
6th hr. to 7th is four
7th hr. to 8th is five
8th hr. to 9th is six

My sckooling sez 6 hours, lol :)

The third hour, according to first century Jewish thinking, would have been hour #1, the fourth hour would have been hour #2, the fifth hour would have been hour #3, the sixth hour would have been hour #4, the seventh hour would have been hour #5, the eighth hour would have been hour #6, and, finally, the ninth hour would have been hour #7. Apparently then the Lord Jesus would have been on the cross for a total of seven hours altogether.

Rammon is correct. The answer is 6 hours. The last three hours there was darkness.

Mr 15:25 And it was the third hour(9:00 a.m.), and they crucified him.

Mt 27:45 Now from the sixth hour (noon) there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour (3:00 p.m.).

Christ was on the cross 6 hours. They had to get him and the theives off their crosses and into their tombs before 6:00 p.m., which was the begining of the Sabbath, in order to no break Jewish law.

Jesus was on the cross long enough to pay for our sins.
---Susie on 1/7/08

I do not know how long Jesus was on the cross. I really don't care how long he was on the cross. All that matters is he paid the way and broke the doors that we may go to God ourselves without the preacher. But in Jesus name we can pray directly to Him. Then he died yes. And laid for 3 days. And on that 3rd day he arose from the dead and ascended back to Heaven. Thank you Jesus! He was up that long enough.

.ramon, According to the scriptures the Jewish hours were measured 12 hours for the day, and 12 hours for the night; that is, from daybreak or sunrise which was between 6 o'clock and 7 o'clock in the morning up to sunset which was 6 o'clock in the evening. Thus the 1st hour was 6 a.m. and the 6th hour was 12 noon. Please read Psalm 104:22,23; John 11:9,10.

#2 Matthew 27:45- From noon until 3:00 p.m. The crucifixion began at 9:00 a.m. Luke 33:44- noon to 3:00 p.m. Luke was using the Jewish method of reckoning time.

Jesus was on the cross for Six hours. He was nailed to the cross at 9:00 a.m in the morning, and was dead by 3 in the afternoon.
---Ramon on 4/26/07

Helen 5378. The crucifixion occurred at 9.00 a.m. based on the Jewish method of reckoning time. John notes that it was "about the sixth" when Pilate sentenced Jesus to be crucified (John 19:14). John apparently used the Roman method of reckoning time, which counted the hours from midnight. Thus, John's "sixth hour" would have been about 6.00 a.m.

Mark used the Palestinian method. The Roman day began at midnight, and the Palestinian day began at sunrise.

Eloy - What about Mark 15:25 which says that Jesus was crucified at the third hour? Do you know if that is correct, making it six hours that Jesus was alive on the Cross?
---Helen_5378 on 4/26/07

Jesus was alive on the cross for 3 hours: From the 6th hour (ie: 12 noon) until the 9th hour (ie: 3pm)- ref: Matthew 27:45; and remained hanging dead on the cross for 3 hours: From the 9th hour (ie: 3pm) until the 12th hour (ie: 6pm evening)- ref: Mark 15:42-46. "Thereupon being third time; and crucified him. And when the sixth hour was come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. And Jesus cried with a loud voice and gave up the ghost." Mark 15:25,33,37.

I am not 100% sure, but it had to be in the hours because people couldn't live that long on the Roman cross.
---Janet on 4/25/07

The time mentioned was From the 12th to the 3rd Hour,of his dying Agony."we besech thee to forgive us dear lord it was our sins as well."
---Emcee on 4/25/07

The Jewish day, that is like our midday, started at 6.00 am. Hence Jesus breathed out His last at the ninth hour, which in fact was 3.00 p.m.
---Helen_5378 on 4/25/07

Jesus was on the cross for 9 hours. Even though he bowed his head and died on the 9th hour, he was still on the cross.

Jesus was on the Cross for six hours. Mark 15:25 says "Now it was the third hour, and they crucified Him". Matthew 27:46 and Luke 23:44 both record that "there was darkness over all the earth till the ninth hour" and that Jesus then breathed His last.
