If Baptism truly removed past and FUTURE sin then clearly Christ and His Apostles wasted a whole lot of time talking to those who were already Baptized (of past sins) about how to prevent sin to grow in grace and knowledge ...Paul spent much time AFTER his Baptism explaining his stuggles with sin ...it is antichrist teachings to explain Baptism as "magical pill" claiming it "prevents" future sin

duane_The Blood of Jesus does Cover the Sins of Man.
If you have the Blood of Jesus on you,
Gods Judgment will PASS you by like it did when they put it on the Door Post in Egypt...
I've been wallowing around in his Blood for so long "I'm Stained W/It"...

Jesus said to do it, SO we are to make a Conscience effort to do as he said, to be Baptised & preach the Gospel to ALL creatures.
---Duane_Dudley_Martin on 5/10/08

Duane, I believe you are correct on your answer. It is "first" commanded to "go therefore and make disciples of all the nations" And that happens by bringing the gospel to all people. On the basis of Christ authority the disciples were sent. The sweeping scope of their commission is consummate with His unlimited authority. Baptism came after and in the passage represented the formula, Father, Son and Holy Spirit as a strong affirmation of trinitarianism.

#2. Water represents (or symbolizes) cleansing, but it can only wash the outside of a person, never the sins of the heart. Only "Faith" in the blood of Christ can wash those away.
---Mark_V. on 5/10/08

Why should we be baptized? Because Jesus said to. What is it? A ceramony where emersion in water symbolizes our death to self and life in Christ.

Emcee, you are picking a fight. I agree with you. Notice my question mark. Notice the sentence after the question. Baptism does remove sins done until that minute.

Frances008:"I think you are very wrong"Indefinite abstract,wishy washy"SorryYou frances are WRONG.Baptism removes sin Matt28:18-20

ALL and ONCE ONLY::If Jesus thought Baptism was UNNECESSARY how would you answer the question"why did Jesus get Baptised" Matt3:13-17. These were His words as Man.He also said Follow meto have eternal life.

Pt.1
Matt. 3:
13 Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him.

14 But John FORBAD him, saying, I have need to be BAPTISED of thee, and comest thou to ME?

15 And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer IT to be so now: "for thus IT becometh US to FULFIL ALL righteousness". Then he suffered him.

Baptism in water is a ritual, it shows the world you have your sins washed away. It shows God nothing, for HE knows already that you have been washed in the Blood.
---duane on 5/8/08

So Baptism is nothing, then, Duane. It has no power to wash clean of sins? I think you are very wrong.
---frances008 on 5/7/08

The blood of bulls and goats cover sin..The blood of Christ takes AWAY sin. Water has no effect on sin.
---duane on 5/7/08

I strongly agree with john.

"Rebecca. You said the blood of Jesus covers sin and the water of baptism washes it away.
I would strongly disagree with that the blood of Jesus does more than cover, it does the entire job. The water itself is just water, it has no power. The power is in the blood, not the water. They didn't put water on the doorposts in the OT. did they? It always was blood only, not water.

Baptism is when a born again Christian is summersed under water, being baptized by the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost. A saved person should get baptized because of desire. It is does not have to be done before one can go to heaven. It shows good conscience toward God. Even though the blood of Jesus covers sins, the baptism washes away sin.

Symbolically, baptism symbolises both rebirth (regeneration) and resurrection.
Col 2:12-13

As to why:
Mark 16:16, Acts 2:38, Eph 1:13.

Need more:
Matthew 28:19; Acts 10:43-48 (one of the rare times with the Holy Spirit came first as a sign wrt Gentiles).

Pete, sorry I don't come on here everyday, just once in a while and I just read your question. Here is the scripture reference you asked about:
Luke 3:16 John answered and said to them all, "As for me, I baptize you with water; but One is coming who is mightier than I, and I am not fit to untie the thong of His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

Baptism is a sign of repentance or a sign of entry into a community. if you are in a community of faith that baptizes after conversion then yes for you to be accepted into that community you must be baptized. if you are in a infant baptism community you should be baptized as should your children, before you enter into the community of faith.
---Jared on 4/28/07

I am in a Friends church where we don't water baptize, so in that church you would publicly proclaim your faith before you can become a member and participate in the ministry of the church (but you can still attend) Baptism is only important when we recognize the purpose and meaning behind the symbol. if the meaning isn't given then baptism is an empty ritual.
---Jared on 4/28/07

Pete, maybe they don't know where it is, and are just throwing scripture or their opinion around.
---Ken on 4/28/07

Its in one of the four gospels, while john the baptist was being talked about

donna, I believe you, but please give the scripture that you quoted. The one about the Holy Ghost and fire. I need to find it to show a friend. This goes for anyone here. If you quote a scripture please identify it, so the rest of us can find it in the Bible. Thanks and God bless.

Jen, just to finish what I was saying...how to receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit? Luke says: If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall [your] heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?
Ask someone who already has it to lay hands on you and pray for you to get it. I got it by asking my Pastor, "I want the Baptism of the Holy Spirit" he prayed for me and I got it.

Jen, there are two Baptisms. One is the one Rebecca is describing. The other one is Baptism of the Holy Spirit. The bible tells us: "And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost."
John the Baptist said: I baptize you with one, but there is one coming who is mightier than I, He will baptize you with the Holy Ghost and Fire. Jesus said, "You shall receive power WHEN the Holy Ghost comes upon you." Do you want to know HOW to get the Holy Ghost Baptism?
