Luke 14:
17 And sent his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come, for all things are now ready.

18 And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me excused.

19 And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray thee have me excused.

20 And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.

Luke 14
21 So that servant came, and shewed his lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind.

22 And the servant said, Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room.

23 And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.

Luke 14
25And there went great multitudes with him: and he turned, and said unto them,

26If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

27And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.

28For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?

The man wanted to bury his father. Meaning he wanted to wait until his father died to follow Jesus. His dad was still living.
Jesus is saying those who don't spread His message should remain and wait until love ones dies and bury them. The man was making excuses why not to act on his calling to preach. Bringing Life and Salvation to others.

I have one problem what Bible are you reading there is no Luke 11:60? It only goes to 54, Where in Luke is this talked about, the only place I can find it is Matthew 8:18-22

Jesus is basically saying that "followers" are to use our time for God's work. There is no time to look back. Jesus' work is the most pressing need. Jesus did not tell the man to go back for a funeral, but let those unsaved people (spiritually dead) bury the physically dead.

As a euro society, we have difficuly with middle east and northern african thought. This is simply Jesus(Yashua) requiring that this man to forsake all and to follow him. It's hard but not harsh, because if we had this kind of dedication now, our society would not be in the state that it's in, especially the sad state of clergy (bishops, preachers and pastor).

cynthia 1 is absolutely right neither does my bible. john is absolutely right that's what "the dead burying the dead"means also it could be that his dad was dieing and obligations to family, that he couldn't come right then. Jesus over rides that and demands total obedience Matt.10:37 "he who loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of Me."

Matt. 8:22/Luke 9:60 'let the dead bury their own dead' has been thought to reveal about Jesus' attitude to the Jewish Law. The last two or three decades have rekindled interest in the first-century Judaean and Galilean setting of Jesus' ministry. Scholars from a wide range of perspectives have continued to regard this saying as evidence that Jesus departed from conventional Jewish Torah piety in significant ways.

Luke 11:60 is not in my Bible. Sorry.

The context here is that Jesus just called someone into ministry and they made an excuse to not go. It seemed like a good excuse, but it wasn't Jesus' will that the man attend to family matters when he was called to follow. The dead burying the dead simply means those who are unregenerate will bury the physically dead person.

jesus was speaking of spiritually dead people, need the message, truth,

Essentially, He is saying that those who are carrying the body are as dead as the one they are carrying. He was referring to the deadness of their spirits, unregenerated and void of the life of God.

In this passage the word dead is synonymous been lost. You can be physically alive but spiritually dead. In fact most people who are physically alive are spiritually dead. What a sobering thought. Do something about it witness to someone today about the Lord Jesus Christ!!!!
