What Is Shame Facedness

First Timothy 2:9 says "In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;" what does the word SHAMEFACEDNESS used here mean?

Where did you go Mima? Are you okay?

Hi Mima; hope I didn't come across as mean in my posts; just honestly challenging you but hope I didn't seem "rude" 'cause that was not my goal at all. Anyway, just curious; God bless ya brother :)

Mima, without doing a study, I've interpreted it to mean humility. Great questions you ask.I, as a woman, don't see this as disrespectful or condescending to women. This is in the word, and the purpose is to get to the truth. The humility and the adornment spoken of are to enhance and bring out true beauty, given by God.

Jesus treated with women with respect. Today "godly" men disrespect us all the time using the Bible as their reason. I wonder how many girls grew up like I did, struggling at church to believe we were NOT inferior to men with the way they acted. Sad you guys--learn to LOVE!

Hi Mima; I notice you seem to know just about every Scripture that can make men (seem) superior to women!!!! Do you happen to know ones about loving and respecting women too?! I hope so; it seems very unbalanced, in my opinion.

Reading "the rest of the story" the scriptures remind we woman that we should be more concerned with what is in our hearts than what we are wearing. Modesty is so important in women's apparel. But humility and modesty in our heart is just as important. We should NEVER be shamefacedness in telling about Jesus.

To dress appropriately as becoming for a Christian woman. Any other way of dressing is a shame. Common sense will tell you how to dress for each occasion. For an example:Do you believe that it is becoming for Christian women to wear skin tight clothes or dresses and skirts too short or Low cut blouses? An occasion for an example: Shorts around the house, but not in church or in my case not in town. If too short around the house you should go and change if a guest arrives suddenly.

It means to be demure, modest and humble. This refers to women. Teachable and godly, as women should be.
Something that is in very short supply these day. Some people make fun of and ridicule modesty and shamefacedness, these days. Even Christians.

In a nonliteral way, it means that the woman should not draw attention to her beauty on the outside facial features.

I believe in this conext, "shamefacedness" means "modesty." The NIV renders it "decency and propriety". NKJV says "with propriety and moderation."

This, of course, is a relative term. What might be modest and appropriate in American culture could get considered shameless in a strict Muslim culture.

It comes from the Greek "aidos" and means regard for others, respect, reverence, self-restraint, modesty, not being bold or forward, bashfulness toward men.
