No, it is not necessarily a sin. Romances aren't just the lurid pulp paperback novels. Songs Of Solomon in the Bible is a romance. So are many of the classic stories and tales one reads in high school or university level literature classes. If a person is going to have impure thoughts or commit an impure deed, that will happen with or without romance books. Assuming that a person will automatically act out romantic or sexual fantasies because of romance novels is crazy. That's like saying people who read detective fictions or true crime novels will go out and commit a murder or robbery.

A sin is a sin whether with your spouse or not. Jesus condemned lusting after the opposite sex, even in your mind, as adultery. (Matt 5:28)
Phil 4:8 "Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthymeditate on these things"
Psalm 101:3 "I will set nothing wicked before my eyes..."

Romance do stir up passion and deep feelings. Are you prepared to deal with these feelings,if provoked, during and after reading these novels? Fornication is sin. I think they should be avoided unless you and a married mate choose to share them, together.

It depends on what kind of Romance Novels you read. If you read those with all the unmarried people sleeping around, with graphic discriptions of how they do it,they are filth, and sin to read. There are clean Christian Romance books which you can get and I don't think those would be sinful. It also would depend on how much time you read,if obsessed with them would be sin,but temperance in time wouldn't be.

Amdrea Please read the whole of what I said
"There are also genuine romance novels which are romantic and do not focus on sex, but on character and development of feelings. They do not promote lustful thoughts as many here seem to fear...
These real romances are not sinful, even if they are not specifically Christian"

I find real life kinda boring after having read a couple of romance novels lol! So I don't tend to read them, myself, so a real-life man won't disappoint when he doesn't live up to fictitious dreams lol :D

Andrea # 2 .. You say "Romance novels are meant to stir up passions and affections - how do you manage to take every thought captive whilst think about steamy sexy scenes in your head"
Maybe the sort that you have read!!!
But there are many roamnces which are NOT designed to do that. Try a real romance, not a cheap & tacky top-shelf sexy book.

If rated, the Bible would be X-rated for, sexual content and violence. There are sections no one would dream of reading in church. A romance novel is just fiction.
---yoshin on 8/18/07

Yes it is a sin to read the type of writings in those books....it is not wholesome. Also, viewing that sort of thing on TV is just as wrong. There are many scriptures about wrong thinking/activities.

really it probably just makes things much more difficult for you

the sin is not in the reading unless you know it leads you to sin its in the aftermath

Jack: .# 1 .. "The Bible itself has unmarried people sleeping around, with graphic descriptions of how they do it. Are you saying the Bible is filth and a sin to read?"
There are differences, Jack
The Bible is recording history of these people, and the "romance novels" where this sort of thing is described are written purely to gratify or create lusts in the readers.
---alan_of_UK on 8/15/07

Jack: .# 2 I don't know how much you read these "romance3 novels", but I have had, in my position of a volunteer at a charity shop, to peruse books for suitablity for sale. "Romance novels" are written in much more graphic terms than the Bible accounts
Thirdly, the Bible does not condone immoral behaviour, whereas these "romance novels" glorify it.
---alan_of_UK on 8/15/07

# 3 Darlene is right ... there are "romance novels" which are pure filth for the sake of being filth.
I call them "romance novels" in quote marks, because I cannot think of anything less romantic than these.
There are also genuine romance novels which are romantic and do not focus on sex, but on character and development of feelings. They do not promote lustful thoughts as many here seem to fear.

# 4 These real romances are not sinful, even if they are not specifically Christian.

harry potter is trash point blank. It is witchcraft and teaches such stuff. There is no in between right or wrong. We as Christians better stand up for the right, and stop letting the devil get his foot on everywhere. Our children are reading this garbage,so the next generation is going to be warped if we dont try and stop it.

Because we have a sin- nature we are alway in a power struggle with our flesh. We need spiritual amunition to fight against the snares that entrap us and leave us in bondage to sin. If there was two natures going to battle and you wanted the Spiritual Nature to win you would give it the supplies and funds it needed to win. However if you were caught giving supplies to the other nature then would you not be betraying the Spiritual Nature.

This is going to come as a surprise to many people, especially those who post here, but things don't divide neatly into two categories: sin and not-sin.

I'm not saying that there is not objective sin, but most things are in themselves indifferent, and only their context makes them sinful or virtuous.

Part 2:

In C. S. Lewis's analogy, a piano doesn't have two kinds of notes: right and wrong. Every note on it is right sometimes and wrong in others.

Yes. It can cause sexual arousal and give Satan a foothold. Spirits a Jezebel(a very bad one)can begin to oppress you. It can carry over into other sexual sins or issues of self control as Jezebel is a spirit of seduction and control and very powerful. She was queen of Tyre and killed all of the prophets except Elishah. You do not want this spirit in your life. The Bible says to avoid all appearances of evil.

Romance novels are pathetic. They are a form of mental adultery whereby the reader can dream of adultery and fornication. Lust is a sin! Therefore, reading this kind of garbage is sin.
---Susie on 7/16/07

Unless you give into those lusts that are in the romance novels. The worst books to read is the Cowboy type books. It is very, very revealing.

Are you convicted? They are trash that should not be stashed in the brain.
What good are they? I suppose some women work themselves up into a fleshy frenzy with them. Some consider them stress relievers, mindless entertainment. I wouldn't waste my time on them, soap operas in print.
