Hi Dorthy,
What your saying is that we have 2 souls then??? 1 that go's to Jesus and a disembodied 1 stay's here? OUGH BOY!
You need to rethink this one and stop misleading people with your MIS-Interpitatiions of Gods word...
Everybody has an opinion to BAD there is only one Right one and unless you've studied God's word from Beginning to End A couple of times!
Would you take the Advise of a Doctor who has'nt read & Studied the Medical Guide???
I would Hope NOT!

Thes.4:15-18
15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which ARE ASLEEP.
16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and THE DEAD IN Christ shall rise FIRST:
17 THEN we which are ALIVE and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.
---Duane_m on 10/12/07

I'm sorry Dorothy, "disembodied souls" are just not in the Bible.
---Geoff on 10/12/07

One the dead are not all "sleeping", and two we can talk to them. Of course, we should probably not expect an answer back.
---lorra8574 on 9/26/07

If the dead are conscious, why not?

Isaiah 8:19
And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead?

Check out God's word-Ecclesiastes 9:5.
---Geoff on 10/11/07

1 Thessalonians 4:14 says "For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him whose who sleep in Jesus." A saved person is with the Lord after death. Only the physical earthly body is in the grave. When the Lord returns, they (their disembodied souls) come with Him and receive their glorified bodies at the resurrection.
---Dorothy on 10/11/07

John 5:
28 Marvel not at this: for the hour IS coming, in the which all that are in THE GRAVES shall HEAR his voice,
29 And shall COME FORTH, they that have done GOOD, unto the resurrection of LIFE, and they that have done EVIL, unto the resurrection of DAMNATION.
John6:40
1cor.15:51
rev.20:11-15
AS a whole the DEAD stand before God to be judged on THAT DAY! SOME EXCEPTION DO APPLY!!

PART I - God never goes against His word, but some of the posts here are too limiting in what they will allow the Lord to do regarding our loved ones who have passed away and how He will comfort us. A loved one appearing in a photo is not necessarily a familiar spirit.
---Dorothy on 10/9/07

PART II - It is true that we are not to fall for familiar spirits in the guise of loved ones, but that does not mean than the Lord can't miraculously arrange for you to see your loved one in a photo or anything else He might want to do that He knows will comfort you and show you that although your loved one is with the Lord that he or she is still part of your family.
---Dorothy on 10/9/07

PART III - In fact, although of course we are on earth and in that way in a different place, if you are a Christian then you are IN CHRIST and partake of His Spirit. You can be in His presence. Your loved one who is with the Lord is also IN HIM and in HIS SPIRIT--so in that way, in the Spirit, we are not separated.
---Dorothy on 10/9/07

PART IV - If the peace of God accompanies something, then it is something you can trust. Of course, in a state of grief, you can sometimes mistake peace of God with desperation, but don't shut out God or anything He might do to comfort you. Just ask God to confirm these things to you. When those who are in Christ die the physical death, only their bodies stay in the grave until the resurrection, their souls and spirits (who they are) are with the Lord. Have peace about your loved one.
---Dorothy on 10/9/07

I agree with John who wrote on 9/13/07. Scripture is clear on this, but there are some hard and fast teachings among some that put up some blind spots. Most of us haven't had adequate teaching on the aspects of heaven and hell. Anyone who really wants to know that the Bible says about heaven should read every word the Bible says on it instead of going by someone else's word.
---Dorothy on 10/9/07

notlaw99, I don't believe that. first of all the spirit lives forever, it leaves the body when the body has died, therefor it has to go somewhere. You can't see a spirit, so why do you think it dies with the body? I blieve that the spirit goes either to Heaven or Hell, then they a joined back together for the Judgement. Those is Hell will be cast into the lake of Fire.
---a_good_friend on 10/6/07

It is interesting that both Thomas Aquinas, a Catholic, and Jonathan Edwards, a Protestant, wrote that one of the greatest joys those in heaven will have is watching the damned suffer in hell for all eternity.
---InimicusStultitiae on 10/5/07

I Thess.4:13-18

The dead are waiting for the return of Jesus, who will come with a shout. The living shall be caught up with the dead. If the dead have already risen then Jesus must have already returned or the dead are not in heaven. So there are no people in heaven.
---Steveng on 9/30/07

Besides, there are two resurrections: one, of those in Christ who are worthy enought to escape the second death and, two, the rest of the dead at the end of the thousand year rein of Christ.
---Steveng on 9/30/07

The Bible says that there is a great gulf that separates heaven from earth.
No, "people", "humans", cannot see what we are doing. If that were so, the Bible would not say that all tears will be wiped away.
There would be much weeping in heaven if "people" could see their families back on earth.

"People" do not know what we think.
If you think your dead loved one is following you around, reading your mind, or talking to you - that would be a familiar spirit. Many people are deceived by familiar spirits, they allow them into their lives and they become evil companions. No good will ever come from it.
---Michelle on 9/30/07

Familiar spirits can even show up in photographs for people that have allowed themselves to be deceived. They can appear like your dead loved one, a ghostly white figure or even with a visible face and body.
People are certain that it is their dead loved one, but it is not. Grieving people open these doors easily, because the devil knows he can mess with your mind when your at you are at your lowest point.
---Michelle on 9/30/07

At the moment of death, you belong to God, alone. If you've lost a loved one, don't try to contact them from the other side - you're opening the door for familiar spirits. If you see an apparition in a photo, it's a familiar spirit. You need to cast that thing out of your family's life.
They can hang/cling with a family down through generations until a Christian casts that familiar out.
---Michelle on 9/30/07

Some people take greater comfort having the familiar spirits around them than keeping their eyes on Jesus Christ, believing-knowing you'll be reunited with your loved ones in heaven.

John 20:19-31
Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe. ...

Blessed are those who believe that Jesus Christ can take care of our loved ones without us ever making contact with them again until Jesus takes us home.
It wouldn't be possible anyway, but the devil can put you in contact with his spirits, they will be telling you lies.
---Michelle on 9/30/07

Because we believe the Bible. The Bible says that Jesus is sitting at the right hand of His Father right now. Bible also says that to be absent from the body(to die) is to be present with the Lord. If we are present with the Lord after our death and we know the Lord is in heaven, you solve the problem.
---Mima on 9/30/07

Geoff, Luke 16 must be included because Jesus would not tell us a story that gave us a poor example, and in Matthew 17:13 Jesus spoke directly with Moses and Elijah (Elias). Since Jesus was fully human and was serving as our example, what other conclusion can we draw. Only two things can be seen from this example - one the dead are not all "sleeping", and two we can talk to them. Of course, we should probably not expect an answer back.
---lorra8574 on 9/26/07

Hebrews 9:27 "And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:"

Why do people assume that there is time in Heaven? God is eternal. Even so, for us humans, there remains the Resurrection of the Dead on Judgement Day, but our fate is already sealed upon our death.

Geoff, I could also point to Revelation, but that is definitely not literal (even though some seem to think it is for some strange reason).
---lorra8574 on 9/26/07

Lorra, you said "Jesus gave us enough exampleS to show that there are dead people in Heaven that do have some awareness of what is happening down here." Please share these exampleS other than the Lk 16:19-31 parable (illustrative, not literal, story).
---Geoff on 9/26/07

The answer is NO. Think about it. Would it really be heaven if that could occur?
---catherine on 9/22/07

Joseph, thank you for your kind words, and may God bless you and your loved ones! I believe that God uses us at times to comfort each other with kindness. He knew that I needed to hear that.

Cynthia your son lives on in the mind, plan and purpose of our Father for his life eternally, just as he lives on in your thoughts. As the called and chosen of God in Christ, you will be united with him, along with all of your redeemed loved ones, to enjoy the awesome beauty of Heaven. However, until the resurrection he will rest from all things. Take comfort in the fact that he has passed from death to life, and as far as he is concerned, that passage will take place instantaneously.
---joseph on 9/20/07

Joseph, yes I am referring to the dead. The reason that I asked this question is because my oldest son died last Oct. from cancer, and I believe that he is with Jesus. He had recieved the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior about 3 months before he even knew that he had cancer. I was curious as to what others thought about this subject. God Bless!
---Cynthia on 9/19/07

Hi, it's kinda silly but even this past year, I found myself apologizing to my late brother, who was killed in '81, for taking down a lamp that had been his to put up a new one! Actually started crying and then realized how silly this was, if my brother could hear me, he would have wanted to slap me upside the head lol :D
---Mary on 9/19/07

Geoff, that passage only tells us where David's body is, not his soul. But Jesus gave us enough examples to show that there are dead people in Heaven that do have some awareness of what is happening down here.

("That tells me that they see and know what we are doing down here on earth, which tells me that Christians are in heaven watching us") -- I do not believe that is true. I was told that at the RCC and it made me scared that my dead uncle could see me from heaven. It is a lie because only God is omnipresent and can see everywhere. Besides, what would all those dead people want to look back down to earth I wonder.
---Helen_5378 on 9/19/07

Betty, Heb 12:1 does refer back to chapter 11. That cloud of witnesses are all dead people-Heb 11:13, except for Enoch, Moses and Elijah. Here's what the Bible says about David who is listed here & still dead:
Acts 2:29
Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day.

David is not ascended into heaven-v34.
---Geoff on 9/19/07

Hebs 12:1 since we are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses... refering back to chapter 11. That tells me that they see and know what we are doing down here on earth, which tells me that Christians are in heaven watching us

Cynthia, assuming you are referring to the dead, as opposed to the angelic. No to both questions. Humans rest without consciousness until the resurrection. "His sons comes to honor, and he knows it not, they are brought low, but he perceives it not of them. His breath goes forth, he returns to his earth, in that very day his thoughts perish. For the living know they shall die, but the dead know not anything." No man other than Jesus has ascended to heaven. Job 14:21>Psa.146:4>Eccl.9:5>Jn.3:13
---joseph on 9/14/07

Cynthia, I believe the earth is the spectacle of the universe. God & the angels certainly see and know what's going on, but I have a feeling you are asking about those who have passed away. The Bible says they are sleeping in their graves, unconscious.

Ecclesiastes 9:5a
For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing.

God alone is omniscient (knows all things). Good news is that He alone can read our minds-that excludes the devil-Dan 2:22, 27-28.

How do you know there is a heaven and that people go there?
---InimicusStultitiae on 9/13/07

People are still asleep until the ressurection as Daniel ch 12 says. Also in the NT it says no man except the son of God has descended or ascended to heaven. We are awaiting the ressurection & so are the ones before us, once we do see them however it will be rejoicing.

Jesus, at the right hand of the Father with the angels in assembly are the only beings currently in heaven. The spirit/breath (that which gives life) goes to heaven when we die, the body turns to dust and the soul awaits resurrection in Sheol. So to answer the question, yes, Christ, The Father and the angels that are currently in heaven can see what we are doing, and I am pretty sure they know what we think.

Luke 16:23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue, for I am tormented in this flame.
---Mr._Graham on 9/13/07

25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.

26 And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot, neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.
---Mr._Graham on 9/13/07

A good Friend, When you die you spirit dies as well until it is resurrected in a resurrection body any you eternal life starts at that point.

When Christ resurrected Lazarus his spirit did not come back from heaven, it was just dead. That is what resurrection means to be made alive again, and before then you are just dead bodily and spiritually.

Regrettably John's Blasphemous miss quotation of Paul by only giving part of a verse out of context that has nothing to do with this subject.

ok people, a lot of you believe that we don't go to Heaven or Hell at death. So where do we go? our spirit goes somewhere, if it didn't then it would be here just floating around the world. I totally believe that our spirit goes to it's rightful place, Heaven or Hell.
---a_good_friend on 9/13/07

Speaking of the physiscal body, it is not going to heaven or hell until the resurrection. But Paul said that to be absent from this body is to be present with the Lord. Our spirit, which is born again, will return to the Lord to be in his presence. That is where our citizenship is right now. As far as there being communication between heaven and earth, I see that it is Scirptural but it's not a door that's always open.
---john on 9/13/07

This is a subject usually discussed by non-Christians who simply believe that everyone goes to Heaven and that their deceased loved ones are already there, looking down on them and keeping them safe. It is not scriptural and we should not consider it. The dead (prior to the judgement) have no consciousness so will not be aware of what anyone else is doing anywhere.
---RitaH on 9/13/07

I have heard it said, that not everyone who enters heaven is allowed down here joining the cloud of witnesses only certain ones.

Hebrews 12:1, Wherefor seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patioence the reace that is set before us.

In general, there are no people in heaven yet. The general resurrection has not occurred neither has judgement. If people go to heaven or hell directly when they dye there would be no need for resurrection and that would contrary to the dominant body of scripture in the subject. After the general resurrection who would there be left on Earth to look at.
---notlaw99 on 9/13/07

Not sure about that but people in heaven can see the people in hell. Check the story about Lazarus and Abrham. Luke 16:26 `And besides all this, between us and you there is a great chasm fixed, so that those who wish to come over from here to you will not be able, and that none may cross over from there to us.

Contrary to the Brainwashed teachings of Certain Protestant CULTS, There are NO People in Heaven at this time, God's Day of Judgment has yet to be. The Record-Keepers at God's Throne, however, SEE AND HEAR AND KNOW EVERYTHING, and that information is Passed along to the Judges who sit just inches from Heaven's Walls. Even our Utmost Secret THOUGHTS and INTENTIONS Shall Be Judged.
