What To Wear To Church

Some Churches teach that their congregation should wear their best clothes, others say come in your blue jeans. Does the Bible say anything about this? What do you think?

1Tim2:9 In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety, not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array,
1Ti2:10 But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.

I'm pretty sure the Apostle Paul is not talking about dressing like a "Hoochie".

Note Paul uses the phrase "in like manner" meaning the men are to dress modest as well.

In other words, whether your a man or a woman do not dress provacative. We come to church to worship God not to be seen or to attact a mate.
---trey on 8/10/12

Jesus says to come as you are.I believe that could mean how you dress,it could also mean come with all your problems. Its about having a relationship with Jesus, not what you wear.
---Ron on 7/19/12

Wear what Jesus wants you to wear, it is his house.
---Eloy on 7/1/12

joyce elliot, thanks for your answer. you are correct in your assessment. none of my clothes are fancy but I try to be neat and clean especially when I go into the house of the Lord. even poor people can be clean and neat. clothes really don't matter but cleanliness does.
---shira4368 on 7/1/12

For one I don't look at people that are poor and can't afford nothing better. But women should wear dresses and skirts to church it is the LORD'S house where we go to worship. For men wearing blue geans or regular pants are fine. Common sense teaches us that you don't go around half naked. You know what you are wearing is apporiate or not if you are a true born again christian. One person comment that that the BIBLE say to dress modestyle, and what is modest to you may not be to me. God has no respect of person, what is wrong for me is wrong for you. Wise up and let the Holy Ghost lead you. It will teach you if you let it. Love to all. Seek GOD'S will in your own life. You will stand before him. What's on the inside will show on the out side.

we are children of the most high God,He is King of Kings Lord of Lords,we are royalty.
---michael on 5/25/08

Mima...Since our body is the Temple of the Holy Spirit, I would say that a building cannot be the House of God. We are to live our lives and dress as if we are truly the Temple of the Holy Spirit. Baby Christians will learn this as they mature in the Lord. Since Jesus is right now sitting at the right hand of the Father in Heaven and He said He went to prepare a place for us, the House of God is with Him. If He dwells in us, then the House of God is within us also.
---Susie on 10/30/07

Many answers to this question include the statement that our churches are the houses of God. Question, is this statement, biblically correct? I hear many preachers referred to their church as the House of God. Still the question persists are these statements biblically correct????
---Mima on 10/30/07

Where we live, many of the churches attendees are dressed for a fashion catwalk. Their expensive weekly new outfits is offputting to ourselves as we are not posh - just ordinary.

Bless you Frank :) I do appreciate your taking time to answer and stuff, you and I may not always agree but I think you have a great heart! :) God bless ya, Mary
---Mary on 10/24/07

Okay Frank. Just curious what you meant is all, didn't realize I lack spiritual discernment! think I'll let the Lord decide that. :) But thank you for explaining yourself a little more, God bless.
---Mary on 10/23/07

Mary,
I just wanted to say thank you for inquiring. At least you express a desire to clearly know what a person posts. My post was in parable form.
The haughty would probably say they knew that already or be quick to dispute it.
It is a spiritual answer about spiritual clothing, or covering.
The difference in a carnal mind and the Spiritually discerned word.
The difference in clothing in this world and that which covers us in the righteousness of Christ.
Frank
---Frank on 10/23/07

Mary, the word of God is to be spiritually discerned. Just as denim makes both male and female attire depending on the laborer so does the word. We are laborers with Christ. Spiritual discernment is neccessary. The word learned and taught by a carnal mind won't make a strong vessel that will endure unto the end. Neither will that word be the strength of our salvation.
The spiritual things many do not see. They argue carnal issues but the word is Spirit. My post required spiritual discernment.
Frank
---Frank on 10/23/07

Hi Frank, I hate to admit I'm confused by what you wrote, can you please elaborate? Thanks, honest I'm not blonde just confused lol :D
---Mary on 10/23/07

Holly: If I worked in a law firm, I would never wear denim on any day, except the day it was permitted. I don't care what other women wear, they don't answer to you, they answer to the bosses. If you would spend more time focusing on yourself and your relationships with God and your co-workers you would not have time to concern yourself with what others are wearing.
---Trish9863 on 10/22/07

Denim goes down two seperate lines and one laborer makes a skirt while another makes jeans. Female/male.
One laborer uses the word through pride, a carnal mind or man's doctrine to create a weak vessel while another uses the spiritually discerned word to create a strong vessel. Female/male
The word that can cover by spiritual strength can merely be nothing more than a help meet in this life and not saving strength.

Lorra: Holly when you think of what is professional dress for women, don't forget what the world's oldest profession is.

LOL Lorra...good one...you are so right...forgot about the world's "oldest profession"! :-)
---Holly4jc on 10/19/07

1) Believe me Robyn...I am always picked on and persecuted. I am the ONLY one at work that constantly gets reprimanded, even for the silliest of things. My friend/co-worker laughs about it because he sees it first hand. He claims to be a Christian but never talks to anyone about God except with me while at work and he never, ever gets persecuted, everyone always loves him. That's because he is not vocal about his faith. But as for me, it is just part of my life, this persecution and...

2) ... I have grown accustomed to it. The longer I walk with the Lord, the stronger it gets. I have even gotten fired from a job because a bunch of women there hated me because I was a Christian and they plotted against me to get me fired. But...I am the type of person who does not compromise and I am vocal and take a strong stand for Jesus, no matter where I am and naturally, people do not like that.
---Holly4jc on 10/19/07

3) But, wherever I have worked and whatever places I frequent, they always know that I am a Christian, I never hide it and they know exactly where I stand on morality, compromise and integrity. It's the least I can do for Jesus! :-)
---Holly4jc on 10/19/07

Holly when you think of what is professional dress for women, don't forget what the world's oldest profession is. Just the same, I prefer to dress modestly at work as well. And some places prefer it that way.

I have lost jobs because I was different. I did not fit in to the world and its standards. No matter how hard we try we may as well get ready for persecution, if we are true Christians. We are to let our light shine wherever we go. When old satan see that light he immediatley wants to put it out(break up our family, take our jobs, sickness, anger etc...) Whatever he can use to make us fall. Be on guard. The devil is a liar!
---Robyn on 10/18/07

Holly4jc: Jesus has already warned us that we would suffer in this world. Jesus suffered and was abused. Did you think it was going to be easy on this Christian journey? The world loves its own, if you appear different you will be persecuted.Christians have been overlooked, persecuted, used, lied on by the world. The list goes on and on but we are to be of good cheer. Jesus has overcome the world. You can read II Corinthians chapter 4 for encouragement.
---Robyn on 10/18/07

My mother used to be one who would counsel people how to dress in church. One day she noticed that some performers had converted but their clothes were 'worldly'. After a while the more they performed the more conformed their dress came to be to the 'standard'. Let God do His work.
---dan on 10/18/07

I agree Andrea: Preachers, God's Preachers should never, ever fly into someones face over anything. The only time I may really get testy would be someone cursing God, and blasphemers. Even then we must excercise restraints. Also, what are you going to do with dumb people. I mean if they keep doing the same stuff, after a while it's like, what's the use. Always pray. "Lord help me".

Instead of welcoming back a lost sheep, two older ladies pulled her aside and said "Young lady, don't you EVER come into the House of God dressed like that again!". Her sister saw from the choir, and they both left, never to return.
---StrongAxe on 10/16/07

This story reminds me why I think its wrong to think of church as trhe house of God. Any place we worship is His house. If we limit it to a building we leave the building. We are His building He never leaves us.
---Andrea on 10/18/07

I agree that women should dress modestly.
1tim 2:9 In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety, not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array,

Titus 2:3-5 The apostle Paul says that the aged women are to teach the young women to act sober, and to be discreet, etc.

It is not the man's place to correct these sisters. The aged women are to teach them as a mother would teach her children.

Bless all of you.

1) I work in a law firm and I am constantly surprised by what the girls come into work in. I was reprimanded for wearing black, dress denim jeans on a weekday...we are only allowed to wear jeans on Friday, yet the other girls come in with blouses cut so low that you almost forget you are in a work environment.
---Holly4jc on 10/18/07

2) They look like they are going out to a nightclub to pick up a man. Their entire cleavage sticks out and if they are sitting down and you walk over to speak to them, you can see just about everything! I want to know WHEN it became acceptable to wear such revealing blouses to work as well as skin tight, short skirts. Yet my denim dress jeans in BLACK with a buttoned up dress shirt and high heels are considered "unprofessional".

3) Surely "good is called evil and evil is called good" nowadays. No one (of those in positions of authority) says a thing to those who dress provocatively in the office, yet I was spoken to for my pants! And for those who are wondering...I have not worn those jeans again on any day other than Friday. :-)
---Holly4jc on 10/18/07

Some feel that it is better to come in blue jeans than not at all. In deed, I have seen young people come to church with piercings and dyed hair and freaky clothes - I was glad that they came. One such person eventually cleaned up and went to seminary.

But, I also feel it inportant to teach my own children that we are worshipping in God's house and we should do our best to be polite and well groomed as a sign of respect.
---lorra8574 on 10/17/07

Susie, I don't know where you are from or where you were before this previous year but your words surprise me. "It seems like this has just popped up in the last year that women think they have to have their cleavage showing." In the U.K. this has been a problem for a decade or more. It is getting worse and the offenders get younger (and older). The young ones and the old ones all look like prostitutes. It is everywhere, including in the churches sadly.
---RitaH on 10/17/07

While we are on this subject, what's with all these women going around everywhere dressed to expose so much of their body? It seems like this has just popped up in the last year that women think they have to have their cleavage showing. It's even showing up in some churches and on Christian television. Although baby Christians need time to change their dress habits, these older Christians should know better.

Years ago a friend told me a story from his neighborhood.

Two sisters grew up in church. One joined the choir. The other joined the world, years later, she felt drawn back to church, so she went in, with her fancy dress, and high heels, and lipstick.

Instead of welcoming back a lost sheep, two older ladies pulled her aside and said "Young lady, don't you EVER come into the House of God dressed like that again!". Her sister saw from the choir, and they both left, never to return.
---StrongAxe on 10/16/07

What some people will wear to church is ridiculous. Common sense is a wonderful thing not useing it is a bad thing.
---catherine on 10/15/07

One of the surest ways to usher the spirit out of the church, is to institute a dress code. When legalism comes in the spirit goes out. People should be able to wear what they want to without fear of what others think. A dressed up person should feel very comfortable sitting right beside a bum, if the spirit of the Lord is in the house, there is liberty.
---Gayla on 10/14/07

Wear modest clothing, not "daisy duke"type clothing. Skitrs at least to the knee for women & pants or suits for men. We are going to Gods house, not a party house. If you can't afford descent clothing you can ask someone if they have anything they've out grown or you can borrow until you can get modest clothing.Don't let people fool you, dressing modestly IS important it shows you care about our Lord & his house.

I agree with Susie's answer to this question.
---Mima on 10/13/07

I think that as a whole people dress more casually than say, 30-50 years ago.

When I was growing up, you ALWAYS dressed your best to go out for any reason, for shopping, and especially to go to church.

I think it's more a change of manners than anything else.
---Jack on 10/12/07

I believe in dressing sensibly but dressing down. it makes me more comfortable and people with little money don't have to worry about keeping up with the latest fashions

I like people to come in t-shirts and jeans, tatoos, chains whatever - if they look really bad - they are all the more in the right place. God bless them
---Andrea on 10/12/07

There are often Sundays when my pastor and the worship leaders are in jeans. I prefer people dress comfortably, within their budget, and get the focus on Jesus and off our clothes.

I think that the seeker will go to church on his/her own terms and God accepts them that way. However, I think that once we are saved we should act differently and that applies to the way we dress as well as other things. I think we should dress in 'our' best, remembering that we are going to see the KING. But we should never look down on someone dressed poorly because whatever they are wearing could very well BE 'their' best. God knows, we don't.
---RitaH on 10/12/07

I would like to wear what I feel comfortable in. I left the COGIC because of the clothes, hats and over the the top dressing. I like to dress nice and modest. I do not want to get so focused on hats, clothing that I forget what I came to church for. Jesus is the reason for the hope that is in me. I try to stay focused on that when I attend church. I try to show love to others, my pastor/wife,visitors etc..its not about the clothes, cars and so on.
---Robyn on 10/12/07

The Bible says to dress modestly, but what is modest to you may not be to me.
The dresses worn in the 17th century would be outlandish today.

So let every person be convinced in their own minds.....
---Andrea on 10/12/07

I think that God accepts us no matter how we are dressed if we are coming sincerely to Him. We have had people at the altar with dirty, barefeet, but they were coming for salvation. We have many people who are at the altar in orange jump suits or blue jeans and blue shirts. Jesus just wants us to come unto Him and He will do the cleaning up.
