We know this statement is true." HG-tongues given to empower for service."
---Darlene_1 on 11/8/07
And this empowerment concerns witnessing!!! According to Acts 1:8," But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth." This teaching is very plain there is no hidden or symbolic meaning here.

Here's what I have to say about speaking in tongues. I use to be scared of it and I grew up around it. I thought it was weird and wanted no part of it. Then God began to get my attention and drew me to an Assemblies of God Church. I noticed a difference right off the bat in that church vs. the Disciples of christ one I was attending.
---MichelleS on 11/10/07

Once I found out it was Assemblies of God I started asking myself questions like maybe all that stuff in Acts is really true and maybe there is something to this Baptism in the Holy Spirit. I asked the Lord for the Baptism and I got the tongues as a prayer language. I remember the first time I prayed in the Spirit what it did to my soul- I fell in love with Jesus and all of a sudden he was all I could think about.
---MichelleS on 11/10/07

I went back to that church and they laid hands on me even though I was already speaking in tongues. It just made me more hungry for God. I began to pray in tongues all the time when I was alone. I prayed in English too and I noticed I prayed in English with more power and I was remembering scripture to use when I prayed. I felt such intimacy with God when I used that prayer language. I grew closer to him and my Spirit was built up and that was exactly what God wanted to do with me.
---MichelleS on 11/10/07

And now my sisters and brothers world wide-it's time for me to go to that secret place and shut the world out. May Jehovah Jirah bless you with favor grace, love, joy and peace. May Yeshua reach pour out his spirit like refreshing water on your soul and may you be refilled with the power you need to live the gospel.
---MichelleS on 11/10/07

No one puts the emphasis on tongues except those who don't believe in them. The fact they aren't mentioned more than other words has nothing to do with their validity. Jesus prayed God for a comforter and commanded the Apostles to wait until they were imbued with power from on high. He,HG,came in a new way Acts, given by God,God never gave command to remove that new way from God's Children. The Gift of the Holy Ghost with tongues is still in operation. The Gifts and calling of God are without repentence.
---Darlene_1 on 11/9/07

For you who embrace tongues, how many times is it mention in the new testement,{count}.

Now {count}the number of times the words{trust, believe}.
Now compare does the words the emphasis is on tongues.
If the word does not put the emphasis on tongues why do you put you faith,on knowing JESUS base on you speaking in tongues.

God children needs good SOULFOOD to grow beyond the small things.
---LIONEL on 11/9/07

lionel,God doesn't use Babes to minister in Spirit in His churches. Far from Babes people who have faith and trust in God to accept all He has for them also grow into mature Christians to be of use to God when He moves through them to edify the church. There are 1/2 billion Pentecostals, all of those aren't women, thats a laughable-absurd statement. Jude 1:20 tells us to build ourselves up by praying in the Holy Ghost, which is HG praying in tongues. HG-tongues given to empower for service.
---Darlene_1 on 11/8/07

Any one who is still holding on to that experence{tongues}is still babes,as paul told the Corinthians chapter 12.Speakingin tongues edify self.
Take women out of the tongue movemenr it would disappear tomorrow.
---lionel on 11/7/07

Anyone who thinks speaking tongues is babble and done for self gratification is showing a lack of knowledge of the Word of God,people don't speak the HG speaks through them. Beware you don't blaspheme HG. God doesn't give Gifts for wanton use by anyone. God imparts His power through the Baptism of HG with tongues and other Gifts of the Spirit for the edification, exhortation, and admonition of the Body, the Church. It's a great responsibility to serve God and obey only Him in the use of any of the Gifts.
---Darlene_1 on 11/7/07

In this verse yes Paul is talking about prayer language.

Contrary to what some people think tongues have not ceased. (There is no biblical proof they have.) If you continue to read the whole chapter and not anything out of context you will find Paul even spoke in tongues. 1 Corinthians 14:18 I thank God, I speak in tongues more than you all,

Also 1 Corinthians 14:39 Therefore, my brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and do not forbid to speak in tongues.
---denna7667 on 11/6/07

The whole religious experience of those who babble in tongues is based on the emotional ecstasy of the experience, not on the rational worship of a loving God. Forget the obedience, they say, just give me the thrill!

Isaiah 28-11-12 With stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people
Isaiah 33-19Thou shall not see a fierce people,a people of a deeper speech than thou canst perceive of a stammering tongue that canst understand
---betty on 11/5/07

You need to read your Bible more. ALL Christians receive the Holy Spirit at baptism. NOT all Christians receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Trying to apply tongues to all Christians is UNBIBLICAL. Also I am really getting tired of people making the assumption that if you don't speak in tongues then you don't have the Holy Spirit. You obviously didn't read the book of Acts because it totally contradicts what you claim.
---Darlene on 11/5/07

The proper way to comprehend something is to start without any preconceived notions. Then you read all of the evidence and make an educated decision. You don't start with an idea and then backtrack to find the one or two scriptures that seem to prove your point and then claim that you have made an educated decision. You also can't ignore all the other scripture that contradict your idea and then claim others are ignorant for bringing them to your attention.
---James on 11/5/07

You keep posting that same scripture yet you don't understand it. Paul's whole POINT was "what good does it do to speak in tongues if no one understands you?" The point of spiritual gifts was to build up the Church. Not to edify yourself. Not to give you some private prayer language to God. You need to start comprehending what it is you are reading instead of finding one scripture to back your claim and then basing your ENTIRE theology around that one scripture.

There is another Apostle who speaks of the Holy Ghost,Jude 1:20 But ye beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost. Anyone who has accepted the Gift of Christ to his followers, the Gift of the Baptism of Holy Ghost with tongues knows what that verse means ,it is letting go and letting the Holy Ghost have the believers tongue and praying in the language the HG has choosen. It is complete faith in God, surrender to His will-way.
---Darlene_1 on 11/5/07

Yeah, I guess if a person closes their mouth, God can't speak through them. Bob: are saying that if a person doesn't want to speak in tongues right then and God is leading them to do so, all they have to do is shut their mouth and lay their head down? If a person does that, God won't use them anymore for their gift. He will find someone else whom is willing for God to speak through them, and not shut it off.
---Rebecca_D on 11/3/07

Rita H, Glossolalia (speaking in tongues) is not just done in Christendom,Aboriginals around the world have been doing it for centuries. Tibetan monks recite Shakespeare tho not able to speak English. The thrill of doing something, seemingly "supernatural", prompts many to seek it. It serves little or no purpose in understanding God's purpose for mankind!
---1st_cliff on 11/3/07

AGAIN - I didn't write the scripture...

1Cr 14:2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him, howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.

tongues = language
to God = prayer

you'll have to ask God why I just know he does.

Tongues did cease. The Bible specifically states how tongues were to be used (and not used) and how they were acquired. Because charismatics misrepresent what the Bile teaches does NOT mean that tongues are still in effect. If tongues were important then why were they only mentioned in the Book of Acts and by Paul in 1 Corinthians? Why is there nothing from Peter? Or John? Or James? NONE of the other Apostles address the topic and the only time Paul mentions it is to the Corinthian Church.
---James on 11/2/07

"Moderator - One has to study history and church history. For example, tongues never ceased. I have seen sermon notes from pre-1900 preacher sermons and notes from a friend who's relative was a Methodist preacher. It is hard work because myths and lies are all over the place. But remember the Apostles were having to defend the faith against false teachers and false prophets even as the Bible was being written."
---Bob on 11/2/07

The purpose of prayer is to honor God the father and to ask Him to intercede for us in area where we are lacking. Jesus specifically stated in Mat 15:8 "These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me." Also the bible states that God does not force us to do right but that it is a choice of the heart. So if you have a private prayer language that only God understands, then how does that benefit you? Better yet, how does that benefit God?
---James on 11/2/07

1Cr 14:2 For he that speaketh in an [unknown] tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth [him], howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.

tongues = language
to God = prayer

its a mystery you can't understand

My Bible makes no mention of "prayer languages" whatsoever. The ONLY biblical manifestation of tongues is the supernatural ability to HEAR and UNDERSTAND a foreign language. Thus, these babbling manifestations are not of God, and must of necessity be of another spirit.

1Jo 4:1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God:

1. I have little experience of people speaking in tongues but in the tongues speaking churches that I have attended I have heard those that I believe are making it up as they go along. They say the same few words over and over again and many seem to use the same few words as each other. I've also heard some 'supposedly' telling each other jokes in tongues and rolling about laughing. I thought the tongues speaker didn't understand what they said themselves so how do they know when it is funny?
---RitaH on 11/2/07

2. I've also heard people speaking publicly in tongues with no-one interpreting. When challenged they have said that was their personal prayer language so they didn't need an interpreter. Well, that might be so, but shouldn't they then have done it in private - between themselves and God?

3. I am, personally, not against others speaking in tongues biblically but I get the impression that many are 'breaking the rules' or are false and those people get a bad name for the genuine ones with the genuine gift and I feel that this might be why some churches want nothing to do with tongues-speaking churches. It's very sad because both sides of the 'argument' are missing out.
---RitaH on 11/2/07

There are many good instructive things about speaking in tongues stated in the answers to this question, and those that do not believe in tongues perhaps can learn a lesson from these answers.
---Mima on 11/2/07

Speaking in tongues as a prayer language is under the control of the speaker.
I don't know if God will make you blurt something out - if he wants and your willing. But I've never seen that. It is just like you decided to begin speaking in Spanish and then in English and it becomes very recognizable to the hearer after a short while, but not practiced and you will know that when you pray - your not just babbling only someone who doesn't speak in tongues thinks that
---Andrea on 11/1/07

When you receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, you will understand the difference between 'evidence' of speaking in tongues, prayer language, and the gift of diverse tongues. You will then know, that your prayer language most certainly stops when you lay your head down, shut your mouth, and go to sleep.

Personal prayer language also stops when you do not wish to go around speaking in tongues in the food store, gas station, etc.
Receive the Baptism, and you will understand. No confusion, not complicated, and the Holy Spirit does not force you to speak in tongues continually. You most certainly can shut your prayer language off, like a faucet. You can pray all the way to work, in your car, step through the office doors and close your mouth.
---Bob on 11/1/07

Speaking in tongues is not something a person can turn on or off like a water facet. A person either has this gift or they don't. I have seen several people who blab out words, and I know they either do not have the gift of tongues or they are doing it in self, because if my spirit doesn't bare record with their spirit or if I pray about it. God always reveals who is in self and who isn't.

'Janet', I know why you're in pain.

Why can't you use the same name to confront the hard issues?
---Bob on 11/1/07

When someone has the gift of speaking in tongues, and they speak in tongues, they are speaking or praying directly to God. And no one not even themselves understands what is being said. Unless there is an interrupteur, who has the gift of interruption. If a person speaks in tongues at anytime they wish, they do not have the true gift. Because the spirit within the person speaks. That person is just a mouthpiece for God.

God gives good gifts to His children and He doesn't take them back.
Personal prayer language, spoken at your will, only stops when your mouth doesn't want to move, decently and in order, without embarrassment to you. No involuntary blurting out on the subway or airplane, etc.

The gift of diver(s) tongues comes to the Church, only when the Holy Spirit wills. This gift doesn't come upon someone, night and day, without ceasing. It's for the Church.
---Bob on 10/31/07

Have you ever noticed that there are some who try to speak in tongues from a human perception?
Have you noticed that they same the words, over and over, much like copying babytalk.
That's not tongues.
---Bob on 10/31/07

Tongues cannot be taught, but there are some churches who say repeat after me, and you'll hear the same words like shondo, shon-die, tie my bow tie.

If your language sounds like that, you have not received the 'evidence' of speaking in tongues, yet. You are speaking from your mind.
Authentic tongues comes from the Holy Spirit to your spirit, out of your 'belly', spirit. Someone with the gift of discerning of spirits can tell when someone has an authentic language or a counterfeit.

Acts 2:4, Speaking in Spiritual tongues, is a gift that is given When the Spirit of God gives us utterance, to tongues of angels, and tongues of men, this is what is referred to as prayer language.
---Whisper on 10/31/07

Personal prayer language can be spoken at any time that you allow yourself to speak it.
But as all know that speak in tongues, the Holy Spirit will never cause you to blurt out in tongues uncontrollably, what some here call foaming at the mouth. Impossible, that will not happen. I know that there are some people who will say to others, want to hear my prayer language, like show and tell, but those would be lacking in maturity.
---Bob on 10/31/07

There many scriptures about the 'evidence' type of tongues, which are called, personal prayer language, and they are on the gift blogs up above. Your personal prayer language edifies you, builds your spirit man up. God can indeed give you interpretation of your own personal prayer language.

But this not to be confused with the gift of speaking in divers(e) tongues and the gift of interpretation of those tongues. This gift is of a greater measure and edifies the Church.
---Bob on 10/31/07

Some things are taught and some things are caught.

If you have to practice, I'm wondering if you've actually received the gift of tongues. Saying the same few sounds over and over is not tongues.
Tongues do not come from the head, they come from the Holy Spirit to your spirit. Tongues cannot be taught, they are a gift.

Every one of the nine gifts cannot be delivered as you will them - but are as the Holy Spirit of God wills, not as you will.

This is where much confusion comes into the churches.
People will jump up front and give a "word" from their own private prayer language and do not have the gift of tongues.
---Bob on 10/31/07

Everyone sits and waits for the interpretation, but they should have never jumped up there in the first place.

The gift of diverse tongues is as the Holy Spirit wills and your private prayer language is as you will.
---Bob on 10/31/07

There is a discernable difference between a message given from someone who has the gift of tongues than from someone speaking out of their private prayer language.

Too many people getting up to give a message without having the gift of tongues and they should be told of the difference.
---Bob on 10/31/07

I've heard alot of misguided interpretations about the Holy Spirit and prayer language, but I don't know of anyone who has not had the baptism of the Holy Spirit that can give a diverse tongue.
A diverse tongue cannot be counterfeited.
They will be exposed after one or two words.
The gift of speaking in diverse tongues and interpretation is not your personal prayer language.

You cannot acquire your prayer language or the gift of diverse tongues, by going to a class, learning them. They cannot be explained as a natural talent that you may have.
The gifts aren't ours, they're God's.
---Bob on 10/31/07

If you've been baptized in the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues, it does not mean that you have one of the nine gifts.

The "evidence" of speaking in tongues, can be spoken at your own will. Your prayer language, for your edification is not the same as the gift of diverse tongues.
