I think since everything the Bible says regarding marking our flesh is negative and commanded not to be done, I would say that yes it is a sin. But like any sin, God forgives those who repent. Unfortunately, the tattoos stick around after the sin's been washed away by the blood of the Lamb. It's definitely not our place to judge someone with tattoos, that is between them and God. He loves them, so should we.

Jody: in the same passage you are referencing it also says not to "round the corners of the hair of your heads nor trim the corners of your beard". Even earlier it says "You shall not let your domestic animals breed with a different kind [of animal], or sow your field with mixed seed, or wear a garment of linen mixed with wool". I just checked the tag on my shirt and it said 50% cotton 50% polyester. I guess I must be in sin according to these standards. Straining over gnats here?

I make no opinion on the sinfulness of tattoos, but I would like to point out that tattoos can be a source of hepatitis and AIDS, so that anyone who is considering one should take extreme care as to the hygenic practices of the tattoo artist. (Oh, and jail-house type tattoos, which often contain metal, can make future MRIs agonizingly painful.)

Also, the is the question of whether one should spend money to buy art that is just going to sag and decompose eventually anyway.

I would wonder that we as Christians are not to lead others to sin. Does this cause judgment by or towards others. That's where I think we should lead the thinking process on this question. Secondly, what does the bible say? Read and pray to follow God's will, not man's. Is it worldly or Godly?

Jesus did not have a tatoo. And it is not healthy. Your pores are like tiny mouths that suck in the ink into your blood stream causing any thing from blood poisoning to lupus, from tatooing.

Bible says not to cut or mark you body so I would say that even one tatoo is a bad idea. :)

That is between you and the Lord. No one can really answer that question but God. Many will tell you yes it is a sin and it shouldn't be done. But what may be wrong for others, may not be wrong for you. Talk to the Lord. Oh and John, the law of Moses? Are you under the law or under grace?

Lev.19:28 deals with making marks upon the flesh which would include tatoos. Since this is one of the many hundreds of laws given only to the Israelites and also fulfilled in Christ we are not bound by them. Nevertheless, morality laws are given to all and if tattoos are obscene they would still be sinful. The motive for the tatoo should also be taken into consideration.

Here is something to think about. We are the temple of the Holy Spirit. Getting tattoos is like putting graffti on the temple. Think about people who graffti a building, it's the same thing.

Tattoos were banned under the Law of Moses so if you are an observant Jew they are sinful.
