What Must I Do To Be Saved

In Acts 2:37, 16:30 the questions, "what should we do" and "what must I do to be saved" are asked by seeking people. What was the answer they were given and how do it differ from what most answer in the Church today? Why do they differ?

You don't have to do anything to be saved except be a human being. Christ died for the whole world and everyone will be saved in the end. (1 Corinthians 15:27-28, 1 Timothy 4:10)
---InimicusStultitiae on 12/18/07

In order to be saved a person needs to confess in faith, that he is a sinner, having rejected the Truth(Jesus), and show real remorse, by asking for forgiveness.

Thanks for the words of encouragement 7th seal, I just keep running the race pressing on, and do the best I can, each day is a new challenge, and challenge it is.

Whisper: You have the assurance that HE forgives you. We need only to humbly ask. Yet, we should never "feel" perfect because our eyes should be on Jesus and we should do what He does. He is the only One WHo is perfect and His example gives us something to strive for and allows us to stay humble in order to forgive others. May God Bless you in your study.

Yes, There are some spaced out PASTORS AND PRIESTS who do not want to lose membership and tickle your ears and tell you "YOU ARE UNDER GRACE" BULL-ONY. It was a Pastor of a church that told this to me directly so that I fell deeply into breaking the commandments and BACKSLID but I believe God has forgiven me, though I feel that I grieved HiS Spirit deeply, and I am so sorry, I am forever haunted by my past, backslidings, I still have a problem with never feeling HOLY ENOUGH.
---Whisper on 12/7/07

Whisper: True Repentance means that we acknowledge the righteousness of the 10 Commandments and our duty to Keep Them. Our having broken them is defined as sin. The truly repetant will endeavor to Keep His Commandments upon repentance and not simply say Jesus kept them so we dont have to. This sort is not repentant and is not under Grace.

ONE..........Being baptized by the authority of Jesus Christ to a Jew meant giving up Judaism and all fellowship of his nation with all his political right also privileges, which is something one must remember.

Because of remission of sins. When one repents, which is always required in the Scripture BEFORE A BAPTISM, he is immediately forgiven [1 John 1:9]

Romans 10:9-10. Then and then only, is a person a fit candidate for water baptism which is an ********************************CONTINUED

TWO.........outward symbol of the death, burial, and resurrection of JESUS CHRIST. {1 Peter 3:21} It testifies to the world that one has already repented and been forgiven by faith in Christ Ephesians 2:8-9 and Romans 1:16, 3:24-25, 5:1, then we have the promis that if and when one repents and his sins are remitted he can have the HOLY SPIRIT BAPTISM, for the promise is to all men verse 39, 5:32, Matthew 3:11, John 1:33, 7:37-39...

Acts 2:37 the men do not say what must we do to be saved.

Acts 2:37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?

These men had been pricked in the heart (born again) they were crying out for guidance. Peter told them to Repent (turn from Judaism to Christianity) and be baptized (take up your cross and follow Christ).

They cried out because they were saved!

Hope this helps,

Acts 16:30 And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?

The jailor here was concerned with "timely" salvation. He was responsible for the prisoners. Roman law stated if something happened to the prisoners his family would be killed while he watched and then he would be killed (now read v.26-30).

In verse 31 Paul is telling him to believe on Christ and assuring him that he and his family will be saved.

Hope this helps,

Jesus said that the cross was his baptism, If it was necessary for him to obey God unto the death. You better know it is necessary for you to obey unto life.

denna: "He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved"
If We Truly belive Jesus then Baptism of HS leads us to do what Jesus Comands. We recieve Truth that Jesus the Son Died for Our sins (Salvation by Faith) Then sins and stumblings are covered by His Righteousness. We recieve HS and our works come inline with His Will (Justification) We strive with HS then old habits of sin die off and we become more and more like Jesus (Sanctification) Methodist John Wesley taught this.

they knew they had to do something.they were moved. when they asked what to do v.38 Peter said unto them,1.repent, baptized IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST for what? THE REMISSION of sins, and 3. ye shall recieve the gift of the Holy Ghost.Baptism in Jesus' name is for removal of sins. today they say "anything goes" because they don't want to see the Truth
---donald on 12/6/07

In Acts 16:32, Paul and Silas spoke the Word of the Lord to the jailer and his household. In Acts 16:33, the jailer and his household were immediately baptized. Jesus said in Mark 16:16, "He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved." The apostle Peter gave the purpose of baptism in Acts 2:38. One cannot just believe in Jesus and expect to be saved. One must believe, repent and be baptized for the forgiveness of sins. Baptism is essential for salvation.

To Lionel.
He commanded me to get baptized also. Read my post where I say how God actually told me to get baptized, but again it was after I understood baptism wasn't required for salvation that he commanded me to do it. Thank God, because if I did it to be saved then I would have done it for the wrong reason, and may have actually ruined the entire baptism.

#5. A supernatural act had to happen in both cases. That work can only be done by the Spirit of God. The keepers whole family believed. One must believe He is who He claimed to be (John 20:31). and that faith comes from God, as a gift from the grace that was given to the individual. The way of salvation is the same even in Church, or outside the church. The gospel has to come with power, and conviction, and the individual confesses with his mouth what he believes now that he is a new creation.
---Mark_V. on 11/16/07

James, if you go back to the passages in Acts 2:37, "Now when they heard this, {"this" means, what was explained about Christ and His resurrection ver. 31 on down} they were cut to the heart, {meaning they felt the conviction of the Spirit, bringing light to God's word} and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "men and brethren, what shall we do?" Here we see the Holy Spirit at work by bringing light to God's word and now they are seeking God, and as we already know,
---Mark_V. on 11/16/07

#2. by God's word that no one lost, who are dead spiritually to the things of God will never seek God. These people are now seeking God. The Spirit has already brought them to life by bringing light to the word of God, and now all that is left is for them to repent with their mouths, and then be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ in whom they have believed. They repented, and got baptized.

#3. in verse 38, Repent is the first order of business, and "be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins," This greek word Lit. means be "dipped or immersed" in water. Peter was obeying Christ's command from Matthew 28:19 and urging the people who repented and turned to the Lord Jesus for salvation to identify, through the waters of baptism with His death, burial, and resurrection (19:5, Romans 6:3,4, 1 Cor. 12:13, Gal. 3:27, Matt. 3:2).
---Mark_V. on 11/16/07

#4. In verse 16:29, we have to read the whole context and as we do, we find the same thing happening there. The Spirit was present again to make it possible for all the doors to be open and the chains loosen. Which brought light to the keeper of the prison and trembling before Paul and Silas, said, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" The Spirit had convicted him already, and now all he needed was the truth of the gospel, verse 32, say's Then they spoke all the word of the Lord to him.
---Mark_V. on 11/16/07

I agree whit every thing you said for but one thing {Jesus said be baptized}Jesus COMMANDED US TO BE BAPTIZED
---lionel on 11/15/07

1 Corinthians 1:17
For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.

Baptizing is apart from teaching the Gospel. If you get baptised to get saved you are getting baptised for the wrong reason and risk making your baptism of non-affect. I believed that for a little while, but when I came to my senses and understood it isn't necessary for salvation God told me to go get baptised.

He told me to do it, finally, when I would be doing it for the correct reason, for obedience and not salvation.
---Matthew_from_LA on 11/15/07

Well said Ryan_Z. Repent and be baptized...I see that baptism has been left out as part of salvation. We are told to simply ask Jesus into our heart. This is a false teaching. Why is it, that those who make a stand for baptism are called legalistic? And any church that teaches this is a cult? God Bless
---Kella3336 on 11/15/07

What must I do to be saved?...Faith in Him Who HE has sent. Repenting sin wont save anyone. Repenting (turning to) Christ is the only way, then sin will have no power over you. Jesus is the sin bearer, NOT you.
The reason you have not salvation is because you have not believed.
Look at the Cross, not yourselves.
---duane on 11/9/07

The answer was simple. [Why] It was the pouring out of the Spirit, in its influence upon the preachers and the hearers. Over in Acts 16-30 Their hearts shall be softened and sweetened by the grace of Christ. [we are to accept of Christ as He is offered to us]. The answer: believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. As far as the church goes today. I doubt if the pouring out of the Spirit is evidence in most churches today. Got to realize The Person of the Holy Spirit.

#-3-I totally receive you now and ask you to make it real to my heart. I then asked, do you feel different than when we first started talking? She smiled and said yes I do. When I said do you feel like you are saved or lost right this very moment. She announced to me and the others, I'm saved because I have asked? The missionary turned to me and said, I have never seen anything like that! Later, this young lady came back and said thank you for speaking to me. Saved or lost? You decide.

#-1-Yesterday in St. Louis, in a meeting with a missionary from Ecuador who has been 13 years in Ecuador the following situation took place. As we were discussing being soulwinners the opportunity arose to illustrate before him what we do. A young lady came to our table and I said to her, are you absolutely, positively, certain sure, no doubt in your mind, that you will to heaven when you die?
---Mima on 11/9/07

#-2- No I'm not sure In fact I doubt it. Well I said, three different times in the Scriptures. It says "whosoever calls on the name the Lord shall be saved" and since whosoever means anybody my question to you is do you want to call? Now standing in front of three elderly men who are totally stranger to her, she slowly says, yes. I want to call. Whereupon I led her in the following prayer. Lord Jesus Please come into my life, forgive me of my sins, and save my soul.
---Mima on 11/9/07

There is only one way to be saved and it is by the blood of Jesus Christ. Peter may have stated it a little differently than Jesus but then Jesus also talked about who was worthy. He said "Go sell all that you have and give to the poor." "anyone who will not leave mother father or wives and children to follow me is not worthy of me". So what's that mean to you? Takes more than baptism?

Repent and be baptised.
What is repentance? Seeing the ugliness of your sin... how it led to the death of Jesus... how it hurts you and me... and turning away from it. Stop sinning.
Today many have a verbal acceptance of Jesus without repentance. They continue to disobey God and claim that Jesus' merits will save them. They talk the talk but don't walk the walk. They insist that the law is not binding.

Acts 8:26-40 shows how Philip related personally with the eunuch, then preached Jesus to him, and when the Ethiopian asked to be baptized, Philip said, "If you believe with all your heart, you may." (verse 37) He was taught, first, then came to believe.

And we see where Jesus spoke to people, and they believed in Him. "As He spoke these words, many believed in Him." (John 8:30) You might look at what Jesus said, with which people believed in Him.

"'No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day. It is written in the prophets, "And they shall all be taught by God." Therefore everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to Me.'" (John 6:44-45)

So, in order to be saved, we need what our Father has us learn. What we can get ourselves to do is not enough. We could discuss what we need to learn, then.

The answer given to anyone seeking is that they should repent and be baptized. Then they should renew their minds and crucify the flesh daily. They should also be told to be diligent in their discipleship of The Christ. The last thing anyone should be told is the perverse and unscriptural teaching that it is on their initiative and authority to accept The Christ into their heart.
