Whether There Be Tongues

First Corinthians 13:8 says "whether there be tongues, they shall cease." Wouldn't this indicate the Baptism in the Holy Spirit was only for those first followers, 2000 years ago?

Moderator - As some Christians speak in tongues today, that would be an obvious mis-interpretation of that scripture.

In the 13 chapter of the First Epistle to the Corinthians, the subject mater is of Love agape love or worshipful love and the love we (Christians) should have for everyone. Paul talked to the church about how people can or cannot receive the gifts. Paul discussed love, tell those in Corinth... telling his audience that they may have all the gifts of the Holy Spirit, but unless they first have love, these gifts mean nothing.

While it is true that there are many counterfeits and charlatans out there, this is exactly what we have been warned about for millenia. The existence of counterfeits does not disprove the existence of the originals - it just makes them harder to find.

Pastor herb.

I agree with your post.

Most who embrace the tongues, leaves the rest that go along with it{tongues}out.

Mk 16:15-18 parphasing they shall pick up serpents, drink any deadly thing, shall not hurt, lay hands on the sick andTHEY SHALL RECOVER.

Tongues ceased with the apostles, and didn't start again till 1902. And if you look at our so-called prophets (fourtinetellers) today, you will see they are wrong most of the time. Some say we still have knowledge, so we still have these other gifts, True knowledge quickly fading. Today, there is no right or wrong, and this is what is being taught to our kids. Open your eyes and look around.

This is a popular hobby horse for the Church of Christ people. i grew up Church of Christ, not only tongues has stopped but all miracles along with that Biblical worship is frowned upon, just acappella singing. makes since that a church wouldn't believe you can get the Holy Spirit when service after service they never touch God.
---Kraus on 11/21/07

Trey, prophesy hasn't stopped. God still shows some things which are to come so His people can pray for their Christian brothers and sisters protection. For example airplane crashes, railroad wreaks, cyclones, hurricanes, those are a few I've seen with the eye of the Spirit. I would see them, they come to me in pictures, and then later after prayed see them on TV,exactly as God had shown me. I knew all I could do is pray,I couldn't stop them, and God had a reason for showing me. God Bless

The VERY SAME VERSE says that prophecy will cease, and knowledge will cease.

Well, I don't see knowledge ceasing now, or any time soon. There is no indication that all these three items are unrelated (for example, prophecy and tongues stopping 1900 years ago while knowledge continues on).

Tongues have not cease and they won't untill the Lord comes back for his people.
---Betty on 11/21/07

I believe this sign has passed (1 Cor 13:8).

Bless you,

this scripture says tongues will cease when that which is perfect comes

He isn't back yet

what about the scripture that says forbid not speaking in tongues

does anyone really read the scriptures!!!

Rita H, I think the Moderator's saying the proof is in the operation, I think he's saying the manisfestion of the Holy Ghost speaking in tongues through people today shows HG is still alive and doing what he was sent to do empower the Body of believers, because it isn't the person who speaks in tongues although its their speech being used,it's the HG using them. God help the people that sees but are blind, hears but are deaf, accepts what is not and refuses what is,who follows man's way and rejects God's.

Greetings Cynthia,

You know your asking a loaded question. My belief is that toungues are for a sign (1 Cor 14:22).
Example: Sign for the devout Jews on the day of Pentecost to turn and follow Jesus Acts 2:4.
Example: Sign again for the Jews that the Gentiles were also God's children Acts 10:46.

Everyone wants to refer to 1 Cor 12:28, please note Mark 16:17-18. I don't see too many willing to drink poison?

I believe this sign has passed (1 Cor 13:8).

Bless you,

Thank you very much Alan. I'm pleased to see that at least one person read and understood my words as they were meant to be read and understood. There have been times when I have responded too quickly to an entry and realised, later, that I should have both read it, and considered my response, more carefully. We probably all do this sometimes. I hope that Whisper sees your reply and now understands what I said.

Speaking in an unknown tongue is the evidence of receiving the Holy Ghost. Acts 2:4, Acts 10:46, Acts 11:15. The Jews used it as proof. Peter used the Joel 2:28 prophecy as proof in Acts 2:16-17 Peter calls it "in the last days". No, tongues have NOT ceased.
---Diana on 11/19/07

The Moderator is correct. What's wrong is believing that tongues manifested themselves one time and disappeared. If that were true there wouldn't have been further teaching in 1Cor telling God's people how to minister the proper way ,God's way,in the Gifts of the Spirit. The bottom line, people are afraid of what they don't understand, and can't accept in faith, so they find reasons to deny those Gifts are real and still in operation. You're cheating yourselves from having all God wants to give you.

Whisper ... # 1 As so often, you are very quick to taker offense.
What dsid Rita say, except that it is dangerous to say that because some Christians do something it is necessarily right? She did not say that speaking in tongues was wrong.
---alan_of_UK on 11/18/07

Whisper ... # 2
Now, some Christians say that you have to speak in tongues to be saved. If you don't, you can't be saved. Now if what some Christians do (and saying is something you do) is inevitably correct, those Christians that say you have to speak in tongues are correct.
That is where the Moderators comment was misplaced.
Having said that, I agree that speaking in tongues is still valid, and valuable (although I don't) but not for the reason the Mod gave.

Tongues and other spiritual gifts are only issues to those who do not have them. If a person does not have these gifts they cannot understand them. The purpose of the gifts is to edify. To argue about the gifts certainly isn't edifying. I didn't believe in the Holy Spirit baptism until I received it. Rather than argue with others I pray that the Lord will show them like He showed me. Sometimes the greatest of all gifts can be silence.
---Richard on 11/17/07

Whisper, I think that you have totally misunderstood what I have written below. Please read it again, every word, very slowly and if you find anything insulting in there please come back to me on this matter.
---RitaH on 11/17/07

Rita, and Elder Phil, the Moderator is totally in order, and 100 percent correct. And when did the Holy Spirit die and leave you in charge? He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. The devil will ALWAYS try to immitate the things that belong to GOD, that is not new. But do not attribute those gifts that are given by My PRECIOUS HOLY SPIRIT to those things of the devil. You are not only insulting HIS SPIRIT, but me. The only ones here treading on serious ground are you.
---Whisper on 11/16/07

Moderator, I am not necessarily disagreeing with your post-script to the question but I think you are treading on dangerous ground if you justify something because "some Christians do it". There are many Christians today who do things that are not correct and I think that some here will tell you that speaking in tongues is one of those things.

I understand your meaning Cynthia, No tongues will cease when you get to Heaven, certainly not before that time. In Heaven eternal men will speak all the languages of all others in the universe, there will be no more language barriers. Prophecys are for humans on earth to then be fulfilled. Tongues, should always be accompanied with an interpreter for encouragement to the church, Unfortunately I do not see many interpreters these days, however I did when I was young.
