This is such an old blog that I doubt Sue is around anymore. But here is my answer,
Here is the reason why you should not ask for signs, because we are told concerning faith,
"Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." (Heb. 11:1). The evidence of things not seen, if you see the signs then it is not faith.
---Mark_V. on 11/6/13

I dont think its necessarily a sin to ask God for a sign, it depends on your intention etc. Jesus said that the evil generation will only get the sign of Jonah, thats because they asked for a sign to test Jesus, they were taunting Him, in a sense, saying if You are God then give us a sign to prove it! But if you are asking God for a sign (after reading through God's Word first) and see that you need God's answer directly about something that is not answered in His Word, then i dont think its a sin, because God wants us to turn to Him and be open to turn to Him and ask Him for anything because He is our loving Father who hears our every prayer and request. (cont'd below)

Jesus says that cursed is the one who asks for signs, but blessed are you when you believe and do not see. Yes it is good to want signs to help BUILD your faith, however, the Bible says we should NOT seek signs, but seek God and His Kingdom FIRST, then the signs will be added. We are to seek God, NOT signs.

The OLD way of baptizing was performed BY MAN and also used H2O water...

Acts 1:5
"John baptized with water" (H2O liquid).

Why are we being told this?...because the NEW way of baptism is NOT PERFORMED BY MAN nor does it require H2O.

The NEW baptism is performed by God's spirit and consecrates the inner temple (person) to the outer temple (Jesus).

John gave a "baptism of REPENTANCE" (no Holy Spirit nor in Jesus's name)....

Acts 19:2
"No, we have never even heard that there is a Holy Spirit".

Act 19:5 On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus".

"neither thirst" Revelation 7:16

\\There should be no worship buildings, baptizers, etc.\\

Then Paul and others who baptized in water, including Ananias who baptized Paul, were all wrong, weren't they?

And so was Jesus when He commanded baptism to be done.

Christ WARNED us about seeking signs Matt 12:39

there are many signs given by demons who are the ministers of light

seek The Father in Heaven through prayer as Christ instructed and read Holy Scripture asking for understanding

If we take pleasure in knowing that our enemy will suffer, where is the love in that? Jesus said love your enemy do good to thoughs who persecute you and bless thoughs who hate you. If you only love thoughs that love you, you are no better than the Pharesse,s

There is nothing wrong with asking God for a sign.if He asks you to do something and you want to make sure that its God doing the asking and not the devil go ahead and ask. Do it by thought only so the devil can't hear because the devil can not read your mind. That why you can be certain that its God doing the answering. I'm pretty sure that it was Paul who asked God to give him three signs that it was God asking him to do something and not the devil.
---cindy on 7/2/10

You do not always have to pray for your enemies. Jeremiah asked God for His vengeance upon His enemies and it caused God not to forgive Jeremiah's enemies. His judgment would down upon Jeremiah's enemies. Good for Jeremiah. My God is filled with wrath toward the wicked man. And no matter how you feel about your enemies, Ha, Ha, God feels worse. And even though the wicked may prosper here in this life, they won't in hell. [the destruction of your enemies], my friends, if you belong to God you could see this, perhaps, in this life. "What does it prosper a man to gain the whole world and lose His own soul"...God's people are not hypocritical. Sweet, ye.
---catherine on 6/30/10

I want to add something to what I typed earlier. We pray ever how God leads us into it. But, when God tells you what He is going to do to your enemies, you say, "I appreciate it and thank You"! And then go on.
---catheine on 6/30/10

++Persecution is a sign of destruction of your enemies. I like that one Catherine. I like that one.
---fay on 6/25/10++

Well, many Christians are persecuted, but not all will see destruction in this life.

David asked, why do the wicked prosper?

With that being said, it hits 2 points here.

WICKED people can prosper in all ways.

It's OUR faith that endures persecution even when we see the enemy PROSPER, we don't lose FAITH.

Our sufferings NOW are not worthy to be compared to the GLORY that we will have one day.

And catherine, scripture tells us when we want to see our enemy destroyed, God will NOT do it, because our heart is not right. WE are to LOVE our enemies...not wait for vengeance!
---kathr4453 on 6/30/10

We do not have to ask God for a sign, but we sure have to ask a person who claims they can heal the sick and cure cancer. We have faith in God and that is why we do not need signs, but since man has failed over and over, through history, so that when he claims he can do something we need to see it. We have no faith in man. Everyone fails, not a person is perfect.
When God heals someone, He can do that through a doctor, a total stranger who happens to be at the right place at the right time. Or through machines that are avialable to keep some people alive. God will find a way.

And some people think that when their silly behavior is called what it is, they are being persecuted.
---Cluny on 6/28/10

Perhaps they are persecuted..... by those who have knowledge/wisdom to do better or ignore certain things. Persecutors of children/simple in the faith will be destroyed.
1 Thessalonians 2:7
But we were gentle among you, even as a nurse cherisheth her children:
1 Corinthians 14:20
Brethren, be not children in understanding: howbeit in malice be ye children, but in understanding be men.
---Trav on 6/29/10

DAWN LOGAN, Our relationship with God should be PRIVATE/"secret".

Romans 14:22
"keep between yourself and God".

Matthew 6:6
"go into your room and shut the door".

There should be no worship buildings, baptizers, etc.

JESUS became the new worship temple in "three days" (John 2:19 and 21, the OUTER temple, each of us is the INNER, 1 Corinthians 3:16). God's spirit baptizes/consecrates the inner temple to the outer with living water (Acts 1:5, John 7:38).

If we realize GOD is our heritage instead of ISRAEL we will discover His seed inside of us.

1 John 2:27
"the anointing which you received from him abides in you".

Fay, I have control over nothing on this site. It is open for questioning and answering to whomever wants to post. You posted, I questioned what you posted. You could not provide proof, so you began name calling. You called me a wolve, a liar, an agnostic, and others things, you even claim Hermeniutics is a religion. You know nothing about how to intepret Scripture, you should have studied hermeniutics so that you can interpret correctly. You have no rules, no bounds, no systemtic arrangement, you just pick and choose whatever you want. It is no wonder you cannot proof anything you say. Jehovah Witnesses and Mormons do better then you and they are cults.

I had a dream and it clearly spoke of the fleece.... I read my Bible and I wanted to see if other christians could expound on it for me... I was so disheartened by what I have read on this sight between some individuals that I felt lead to write a comment.... I believe that my realtionship with God and my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is between me and God.... Not you, me and God... and it is very sad to me to hear proclaimed christians name calling as I have read on this sight.... We can agree to disagree without that... Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength and my redeemer (Pss 19:14)

Because asking for sign is a sure sign you may not be saved or your faith is very weak. We must believe in God without signs, in order for it be real faith. Anyone can say they believe in something. That is what faith is,believing something you cannot see. And without "faith" it is impossible to please God. Read your bible.
---Robyn on 6/26/10

Fay, the wolve in sheeps clothings? You were just praying for me in front of the world, and again you condemn me. How Christian of you. Maybe the more evil things you say to me, will give you more power to heal. Yes, maybe going a little further can put you in a position with God that your rewards will be great. What else can you say? You cannot proof a thing. I wasn't the only one either who questioned your teachings. I guess you are like Eloy, believe you are we are dissing God. So you cannot be questioned. Everyone has to believe you, or they are wolves in sheeps clothing. Tomorrow at church, if you go to one, tell God how great you were through the week. How many you saved of cancer or brought back from the dead, and how you prayed for me.
---Mark_V. on 6/26/10

Well of course you disagree with everything I say MarkV because you obviously are the one following a cult. To remove your Statement of Faith & Doctrine & everything else makes you the wolf in sheeps clothing! That is obscene deceit. God will avenge. Fay, I disagree, sorry. You said,
" When Jesus was talking about an evil generation always looking for signs, he was talking about those who saw signs & refused to believe them"
No, Jesus was talking about the Pharisees and Sadduces who were testing Him. This time Jesus rebuked them for being so concerned with heavenly signs that they could not even interpret the signs of the times all around them. As primitive as their method of predicting the weather, their ability to discern spiritual matters was worse. They had the long promised and long awaited Messiah in their midst and refused to acknowledge Him. When Jesus warned of this dangerous influence, the disciples thought He was talking about bread from heaven.

I agree with you Keith. There are many signs in the Word. Look them up. When Jesus was talking about an evil generation always looking for signs, he was talking about those who saw signs & refused to believe them AND those who were looking for signs instead of meditating in the Word. Yes there are many things we should learn but for individual direction you must have a sign. I pray God answers all your doubts in a way you will never doubt it is HIM. Amen!!!

Signs, signs, yes, we all want them. We have them....Persecution is a sign of destruction of your enemies, God's enemies, and salvation for God's people. Hallelujah, thank You Jesus. Tongues are a sign for unbelievers. Jesus' birth was a sign. The rainbow is a sign of God's covenant with His people. Circumcision, a sign....In Matt. 12:39, Jesus responded to the Scribes and the Pharisees that signs were craved by an EVIL and ADULTEROUS generation, yes He did. Jesus condemned the demand for signs to prove God was working through Him. This is good stuff to know, Jesus. Thank You. FINALLY>>Signs will not bring anyone to salvation.++Only the BLOOD....[1 Corn. 14:22, Deut. 4:34]

Asking for a sign shows LACK of Faith. Faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not yet seen.

The word of God is all you need. Our faith is in God's WORD. So are you asking God to show you a sign that He's not lying?

Even when Jesus was with the Jews, they STILL asked for signs, showing a LACK of faith.
---kathr4453 on 6/25/10

I think where I am confused here in all or your replies are what are we asking about? I know God is real and I know I have faith. What if I need help making a decision? Can I ask for a sign if I should or should not take a job, change a career, make a major life move? I think those are the things that most of us want help by the aid of a sign. My faith was pretty much solidified by God giving me a sign, not a subtle one but a slap in the face, almost creepy one I think in some ways if we can have our dialog with god and talk to him about our fears and ask for his help in major decisions and trusting him then it would only strengthen our relationship with him. That is what I think anyway.
---Keith on 6/25/10

The bible was written so long ago, I do not think it is intended in that meaning. They asked for signs back then, they asked Jesus to prove and He did. I have asked for signs, not to prove he's there, but that He is listening to me and I have receive them.

Ask God Almighty for signs??? ...Jesus told mankind His only sign that He was the Messiah would be 3 days and 3 nights in the grave

Asking God Almighty for signs reduces HIM to a puppet ...God's signs are contained in His Word ...1/3 of the Bible is prophecy ...seeking signs by God would be unwise as many "signs" can be delivered but with which spirit? Satan is a master of signs too...

You can if you so choose to do that but don't be disappointed, if you don't receive what you asked for. God is not in the bargaining or magic business. He always gives us what we truly need not our greeds/wants.

We are told to walk by faith, not by sight. 2nd Cor 5:7.

Each of us is uniquely and wonderfully made. Each of us has our own relationship with God. God knows us better than we know ourselves. God is giving us signs of His wonderful love and power constantly. Don't be intimidated by what any person says. Simply speak to God, who lovingly hears your every thought. God's perfection will show you the truth.

God did not finish speaking 2000 years ago. God is just as alive now, and will be for all eternity.

Many times people who participate in prayer lines are only looking for a sign. They call it a touch of God. It is for this reason, and I quit having prayer lines.
When I feel and/or see a manifestation of the Holy Spirit many times I ask another person, do you feel or see the manifestation? Invariably the Holy Spirit filled people say YES!! Those who are not spirit filled say wel, I really don't feel anything? I leave you to draw your own conclusions.

God has already spoken and His words have been miraculously kept for us down through the ages. Now we have Scripture and we need no further signs to validate the Bible. In His perfect Word is everything we need (2 Timothy 3:16).A more sure Word of prophecy to which we would do well to take heed(2 Peter 1:19).We need nothing more and we are not to seek extra-biblical revelations. To do so calls into question the efficacy of Scripture which God has declared to be sufficient.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'why is it so bad' I've found nothing scripturally to say it's 'bad'.
Gideon asked for a sign 3 times AFTER having a face to face encounter with the 'Angel of the Lord' and they were granted to him!

I would suggest caution in your motives when asking... don't be like the Pharisees who witnessed many of the miracles and still said 'show us a sign'
---Michael on 1/5/08

Jesus told the pharisees not to ask for a sign but they were unbelievers. For us to ask is not a sin. Doesn't it say "ask and it shall be given?" And signs are those which follow believers. I do believe we can get too dependent on signs. I think putting out a fleece (asking for a sign) is something to do for a special occasion, not on a regular basis. Another way to get an answer from the Lord is the LOT. See Prov.16:3 and Acts 1:26.

I don't think it is so wrong, if you are sincere, in trying to determine what you are asking about. I would urge you to get a concordance and study the word sign, to see how it is used, when, and what is said about it, especially in the new testament, as we now have the Holy Spirit to help us. God does show us things from time to time, but, we need to be grounded in the word,so that we know for sure that it is God showing us, instead of Satan. He is the master counterfeiter, and will deceive us if he can.

Sue - Do not pray for a sign as Jesus said:
"A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign, and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonah." (Matt 16:4).

Rather pray God to grant you help in building your faith through his word as quickened by the Spirit. Look at Israel and the signs they had and yet none of these kept them from falling back into apostasy. Remember, the Scriptures reveal faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the Word of God.
