Must Believers Cast Out Devils

Mark 16:17 "And these SIGNS shall follow them that BELIEVE, In my name shall they cast out devils, they shall speak with new tongues," If we don't have either of these signs does that indicate we are not believers?

Jesus spoke that to His disciples. If you are not a disciple of Jesus, then assuredly it excludes you. I believe the Scripture states that these signs (heal the sick, cast out devils, raise the dead) shall follow them that believe. Are they following you? If not, then maybe your question should be, "Why aren't they?"

BOB>>>You made some good points.

No indication. All depends on what your spiritual gifts are.

The demon possessed, are they a Christian?
How does the Holy Spirit reside with demons?

Demons hide, it's there nature. They are tricksters and have no conviction about hiding behind lies or anyone they can get their claws into.
---Bob on 2/29/08

In all the New Testament passages dealing with spiritual warfare, we are never told to cast a demon out of a believer (Ephesians 6:10-18). We are told to resist the devil (1 Peter 5:8-9, James 4:7), not to cast him out.

Not every Christian should cast out demons.
Some are filled with fear and anxiety and the demons will play with their minds.

A Christian with faith, without fear or anxiety can cast out demons. No hypnosis required, no trances, no psychobabble. It's called a deliverance.
If you need one, you've opened yourself to a cult and doctrines of demons, it may be a deliverance that you need and not hypnosis.

No it doesn't mean you aren't a believer. It means you don't know who you are in Christ and you are running scared.I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.Many Christians are afraid of Satan. We don't need to be.Satan doesn't fear you but he fears Christ in you.

ALL things are Possible to those that Believe, He told us that we would do Greater things than him, If you would only Believe. Remember Peter's lack of FAITH? Water Walking & When they were UNable to make that UNclean Spirit leave that persons body,Jesus told them it was because of their UNbelief, However that kind of spirit comes out WITH Prayer & Fasting! AS CHRISTIANS YOU HAVE POWER OVER THE PRINCIPALITY'S OF DARKNESS! God is Waiting to work thru each & everyone of his CHILDREN!YLBD

Your spirit must want a deliverance.
You can be delivered, and invite the demon right back in and he'll bring others in that were stronger than the first. Your house can be filled with demons, you can prophesy from a spirit of error and even preach, but you will find conflict and condemnation in all that try to pass on to others.

It has been noted that often there's not a hair's width of difference between a demon possessed person or mentally disturbed.

And for those preaching/observing the law, (partially), in Leviticus, the law stated that the mentally disturbed were unable to be a priest, no defect of any kind.

Mary. I understand we all have various giftings but the Scripture quoted is telling us that the sings or results that follow belivers will be as listed. Those who don't believe this will obviously not be exercising whatever gifts or authority they have, because if they did the signs would automatically be there.
---john on 1/21/08

You can never do these things on your own. An outside power must be involved. When we seek the gift without the giver we greive God. When it glorifies God He will use us as He wills. We very well may cast out demons, or speak in other languages to bring God's message to them in a manner they will understand.

Oh for goodness sakes. The Blood is not the gifts. The blood saves not the gifts. It took me a couple of years to get wind of my spititual gifts. I was still saved those couple of years. Am I more saved now that I know them? NO. Ofcouse not. The scripture that you are asking about has absolutely nothing to do with ones salvation.

i grew up in a church that thought all the signs and miricals of the Bible are past. the Bible speaks of them as thoes who have a FORM of godliness but deny the POWER there of. i am thankful to be in a church where the Spirit of God has liberty. i do warn aginst seeking a sign. Seek Christ, if you do that right He will let you know. learn how to pray more than a "lay me down" prayer. most peoples prayer and worship is as shallow as a puddle dont be afraid to go deep and get loud.

Yes, if properly understood. The Father influences and empowers His character and authority in the life of the believer. As we submit under that empowerment, His presence is made clearly apparent in and through us, as a result, we eject and expel any demonic influencers right to induce harmful behavior within us or around us. We will speak from a heart made soft and pliable in a way not naturally acquired, habitually speaking that which is conducive to life (edification), rather than death (degradation).
---joseph on 1/20/08

Don't take it so literally.

Speaking with new tongues can mean speaking with the knowledge that comes of being saved.

And casting out devils can mean removing the malign influences in one's life.

Really, there's no need to make it more complicated than that. And stop worrying about not seeing literal demons to cast out. Worry if you DO!

Mima
1) When reading Mark 16:15-18, understand that Christ is telling us to spread the gospel so the Word may be planted, But only those that believe will be saved (Mark 16:15-16). In Mark 16:17-18 the signs that Christ is talking about is happing within the believer Your Own Body.

The casting out of devils is done by the Word of God, for all that believe in the Word of God. It is accomplished in what we call Gods time because of FREE WILL.
---Shawn.M.T on 1/18/08

2) Keep in mind that because of free will, whoever is being spoken over must also receive by believing in the glory of Gods Word.

God is patient and we need to be as well? We may not be around to see the out casting of the demon & the person getting saved but we believe as God believes, that His Word will not return Void. Once it has been planted into the heart, it is now up to the individual to receive the Word and speak it from the heart, and it will not return void.

it was no fun. I thought I was going

John, we each have different gifts and different callings in our lives. It's not that some of us "don't believe", it's that our area of ministry may lie in many other areas, such as service or preaching or encouragement or whatever gift God gave us.
---Mary on 1/18/08

I think it indicates that they don't believe in these particular doctrines. There are also those who don't believe and they actually do these things but at the end God can say "I never knew you."

These signs will "follow". This, to me, can mean signs will come as a natural result...with no need to push or promote or seek, but just obey the LORD. Peter at Cornelius' house was not expecting those Gentiles to speak in tongues (Acts 10:44-45). They weren't told to expect it, were they? Ones of us are not directly involved in people speaking in tongues or casting out demons, but we are "in one body" (Colossians 3:15) praying for God to do whatever He pleases, so we are included (o:
