Food With The Gospel

When I was quite young a friend went to Nigeria to be a missionary. She taught cookery to women there but was criticized for this because she was not teaching the bible at that stage. Her answer was "how would they be able to listen with empty bellies." What do you think about that?

Compassion in itself is a powerfully Christ-like endeavor, and I applaud her for what she did. Having someone make a decision about Christ as Lord when they are desperately hungry, well, any dedication made might be ill-grounded and seen as exploitative. Let that come later.

Acts 6:1-7 is an example where the primary business of the church was to preach with the secondary to take a kind of paternal care, for the food, especially of the poor, the strangers, and the widows. And whatever time they had to spare from this, they employed in works of spiritual mercy. But their proper office was, to take care of the poor.

She is correct at any age. You do need to fill their bellies before HITTING THEM OVER THE HEAD with the Bible. What a great witness it is to see a young person serving God in that way! Jesus fed the people and did many signs and wonders which caused people to BELIEVE on Him. I am sure that the starving people could see God in her too. One sows and another reaps but it is God does the work and who we serve:)

Sounds like she is a very sensible girl.

And after all, Christ fed the masses too. She was teaching by example.

I believe that the more people complain about, and what some are not doing for the Lord, these same people are doing the least for the Lord, or nothing at all for the Lord. I have heard Joyce Meyer say the same thing. It is so difficult to get people to believe that there is even a God, when they are hurting.

The problem is that some people don't understand what the word 'missionary'. Many automatically think it means trying to get 'foreign' people to convert from their religion to ours,or from no religion at all to ours. The words religion and missionary go together in many peoples minds. They do not realise that you can have a mission to feed the poor, a mission to rebuild war ravaged homes etc. That was the problem with those who criticized my friend, I believe. b.t.w She was only 20 years old at the time.

God calls us to do whatever we can. Some are planters of the Word, some are harvesters, some prepare the unsaved (by the kindness of feeding them) to receive the Word. God bless this woman! I had very little free time when I was raisng my children, but I wanted to something at my church. For 3 years I would go on Sat. and clean the church, bathrooms, sunday school rooms, preparing for Sunday services. I did what God called me to do, and HE blessed me for it.

Rebecca D, you have obviously misunderstood my question. I was not the one criticizing her, in fact I used to support her financially and emotionally. I am telling you what was said to her by others and what her response was. I agreed one hundred percent with her answer. Yes I did know for certain that she was not teaching the bible. That was not what God called her to do. She was obeying her call absolutely.

Ya know it is just like people to talk bad about someone when they do a good deed. Why question her motives as to why she went there? Why question her walk with God? How do you know she didn't taught about the bible? She is right, have you tried to do something when your very hungry? Your mind is on food. I imagine those people were so hungry that their bellies thought their mouth went on strike. What is wrong with feeding and cooking for people who have basically nothing?

This woman was doing what Jesus told us to do. She went one step further. She was assuring that the women to which she was ministering could cook, so that they could feed themselves. Praise the Lord for people like this woman.

My church supports missionaries who are teachers in other countries. One teaches school in Bangladesh, and she teaches the women there needlework so they can support themselves.

Your friend is wise.

Not all missionaries and relief worker are teaching the bible. There are many members in the body of Christ and they all are responsible for do different things.
