Pride, when defined as 'a just appreciation of one's own worth' is perfectly acceptable when applied to one's deeds.

But it should not be applied to one's looks. Though one can be justly proud of the physical effort and discipline required to maintain a healthy body, especially if one started out overweight, underweight, and/or sickly.

Remember pride comes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall.
---Nellah on 5/10/08

Willow it's not pride if you give credit where its due,to God. I know you are also grateful. It is God who lifts up or makes low. You are right though, people will buy anything,I had a booth at a Flea Market and sold used carpet, once had a whole lot but it had paint on it in spots, couple looked at it and was thrilled to get enough for 2 or 3 rooms for $10.00,I couldn't believe it,but to them it was a blessing, they lived in a drafty ole farm house with wood floors, and that helped insulate it.

God does not look upon the 'proud' but is with the 'humble'. Paul said that he would not boast except in his infirmaties. He points out that we are not to bring glory to ourselves but rather to God. Pride takes the glory away from God and puts it on the man/woman. It is very evil.

Pride before destruction.
Haughty spirit before a fall.
Proud in heart is an abomination to the Lord.
Prov 16:5
Prov 16:18,19
God hates lying lips. I can spot lies in writing or by speech.
It's a gift to spot those who speak evil in private while speaking saintly in public.

would you not say that i timothy describing a puff up feeling with pride that leads to a fall?it uses the word fall.
---tom2 on 5/9/08

I recognise people after meeting them one time. I can spot their handwriting after reading it one time. It's a blessing, but I also know when people are lying through their teeth. I can see it in their handwriting or by their speech. Even if they try to disguise their handwriting or speech, I still know who it is by sight or by reading, immediately. My accuracy is helpful, and I do know when people are making phony requests of others.

I can read words when they're upside down or even in a coded sequence. It's a gift.
But I can also tell when someone has concocted the most outrageous details to try and impress others, or to play on the sympathy of others.

well that sounds even worse.destruction i mean.prideful thinking gives one a wrong thinking and is a lust of the flesh.which we all know is in direct opposition to God.
---tom2 on 5/9/08

My husband and I have a wildly successful business. People will buy anything.
Is that pride?
---Willow on 5/9/08

For those who think pride goeth before a fall, its really this. Proverbs 16:18 Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall. 1John 2:16 for all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, and the pride of life,is not of the Father, but of the world. 1Tim 3:6 Not a novice lest being lifted up with pride,he fall into the condemnation of the Devil. James 4:6 -God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace to the humble.

careful may be short, leary.scripture tells us that pride comes before a fall.my opinion is too be proud of what God has given whether it be talents ,or blessings, and give him the glory.and keep your thoughts on his ways, not on what you perceive as your accomplishments.this thinking will perpetuate the fall.

Hi y'all, I celebrated today big-time and thanked God for the strength He's given me--and my very life: I am 4 years sober today and I am so grateful to God--and I feel good too 'cause God only knows how much I've wanted to drink for 4 years but I'm happy to be sober--and alive! :)
---Mary on 5/7/08

You must be careful with that one. I have not seem a scripture where God advises you to be proud or stuck in pride. God really, really, HATES pride of any nature in you and me. And it is UGLY. I do be happy when God strips me of all and any of it. I hate it in others, and I despise it in me. YAK!>>> And one more idea: I believe that it starts with one's thoughts. This ugly thing called pride.

I don't brag, that's for sure. There things that I do very well-thanks be to God. I do not, however brag. Oh boy, I better not brag about not bragging :-) lol.
---Kella3336 on 5/7/08

It is definately uncomfortable to be around those who brag. These people usually won't admit when they are wrong.

to Take Pride in something, meaning to care for it and put effort to making it nice like your appearance (grooming, hygene, dressing nice for someone of some thing) I think is ok. You're showing GOd you're grateful. To think that your poo dont stink, or that certain people cannot share company with you, well, thats' the pride that put some in their place. When I accomplish something I like to make an asside with GOd and say "WE DID IT!!!!" ,D
---Nicola on 5/6/08

Pride & Proud very different.Pride is what got Satan where is is going {hell}Proud,I'm always proud when I accomplish things but I give God all the Glory, for without God I am nothing
---Gabby on 5/6/08

No.

Everything that we are, including our skills, are a "gift" from GOD. As long as you give GOD the glory for enabling you to accomplish what you did, I see nothing wrong with feeling proud of yourself. Just be sure to thank GOD more than you can.

Example: I'm proud that I was born in the USA where I have freedom to worship GOD and serve him openly. I can't thank GOD enough for that.
---Augie on 5/6/08

All pride is not sin, as is true with anger. ("be ye angry and sin not")

Good pride develops community, you certainly wouldn't say someone is wrong to "take pride" in their appearance, or their property, but all pride comes with the temptation to compare oneself to others and elevate self while condemning those who don't measure up.

Pride left to itself is good, it's the evil living in our flesh that perverts it.

Take the pride quiz. Too much pride can be narcissism in disguise.

Blessed are the meek. Meek means balanced ethics, fair and right.

God doesn't say blessed are the prideful.
Pride comes before the fall, and He tells us that He doesn't care for the proud and haughty. I think most people run from someone who is prideful. They have few real friends.
---Ulrika on 5/6/08

You can be thankful for all of your accomplishments and give God the praise.
But go around telling others with pride about all of those accomplishments and most people will run away from you eventually.
It's not pleasant to be around someone who exalts themselves constantly. Those that are overcome with pride tell themselves that everyone is jealous of them, when in truth no one enjoys a braggart.
---Ulrika on 5/6/08

I know people that exalt their accomplishments constantly, related to one. I don't enjoy the conversations at all. I try to get off the phone as soon as possible, we see each other rarely. This person has constant problems with those in leadership roles. The bragging proves itself to be too much for everyone around. Family has zero impact trying to tell them how much it turns everyone off. Hard knocks seldom make a dent, (boss telling them to restrain mouth), they continue on with few real friends.
---Ulrika on 5/6/08

Our hope should be in what Jesus Christ did, what He does and what He will do.
When we keep our eyes on ourselves, exalting the outer and inner man, I find the focus on self to be a stumbling block to everyone else around us.

Pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a stumble.

People attempt to twist pride into something acceptable like pride for your child, pride in your work or pride in your accomplishemnts. But pride is pride and it is sinful no matter how it is used. Pride denies the work of God in your life. An attitude of pride is an attitude of accomplishemnt by oneself.
---Ryan_Z on 5/6/08

The bible tells us, "God opposes the proud but gives Grace to the humble." I believe all pride is bad. It is God who is giving you the power to make wealth, so being pride about something means you are taking the credit for it. Jesus said, "Apart from me, you can do nothing." Nothing in the Greek means "nothing." Amen?
---donna8365 on 5/6/08

This question hits home to me. I have no doubt but that the Lord is useing my mouth and my tongue to bring many people into his kingdom.(That is the say my mouth delivered the message). On the realization of this one swells with great pride. One becomes puffed up. I actually hear words come out of my mouth that I know were not of my natural thinking processes. I try always to credit to the Lord. But I deeply regret my prideful instincts.
