Can't Speak In Tongues

Can't speak in tongues, though I've tried on numerous occasions and asked to receive the Holy Spirit. Is my inability in this area something I should worry about? Anyone else have this problem and 'fix' it?

Mark, in Act 2:14 Peter stands up with the eleven apostles and addressed the crowed. meaning they are all on one accord and they all agree on what is about to be said.

Act2:33 Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear.

The Holy Spirit has been poured out what you now see and hear.

Mark, you hear people speak in tongues... you see people speak in tongues.

And Paul shows you how to be saved in Acts 19:1-6,

Mark, was the church of corinth saved or lost?
---batieste on 8/5/09

I completely agree with you mich. So many christians today look to corinthians as proof that you "have" to speak in tongues to be a "true" believer, but exactly as you stated, Paul was trying to teach the believers that not everyone at that time COULD speak in tongues, and that most of them were just babbling for the sake of it, and paul taught them that those who could speak in tongues should, but SHOULd have an interpreter, so that the other believers knew their message was from God and not of evil.

Sen Derrick~ Many times 'speaking in tongues' is just some make-believe manesfestation. Don't worry about it. My son is autistic and he sounds like he's 'speaking in tongues' all the time. Maybe he is, and maybe he isn't, but I seriously doubt it.

Since my son 'speaks in tongues' and you and I don't, does this mean he has the Holy Spirit and we don't? No, of course not. People who have the Holy Spirit live to follow the Holy Spirit and are new creatures who live for the Lord. God has made them born-again. Born-again does not mean speaking in tongues.

Tongues once had a real purpose. That purpose in not needed in our day, unless one perhaps wants to speak for personal edification.
---Anne on 8/5/09

Batieste:

Please show me Scriptures to prove that "they are two different things........... one is a gift, the other you receive as proof that you have received the holy spirit".

Speaking with other tongues is a GIFT of the Holy Spirit, period.

1 Cor 12:30 "All do not have gifts of healings, do they? All do not speak with tongues, do they? All do not interpret, do they?".

Not every believer has the gift of healing, not every believer has the gift of interpretation, and not every believer has the gift of tongues.
---Mark_Eaton on 8/5/09

Tongues received when Baptised with Holy Ghost,Gift here is the Baptism itself,of the Holy Ghost, tongues here is the evidence of the overflowing power of the Holy Ghost(Acts 2:4) making himself known to the receiver and a sign to the unbeliever. This isn't the gift of tongues. The "Gift of tongues" which requires interpretation, is one of the Gifts of the Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:10)for ministry to the Body, the Church, tongues with the "Gift of the Baptism of Holy Ghost" is for mankind to speak to God. I know this is correct because I had been speaking in tongues when praying or praising God for many years, over 15,before God gave me the Gift of tongues and interpretation. A lot of people err thinking they are the same.
---Darlene_1 on 8/5/09

There gifts of the spirit, speaking in tongues is one of them...there is no where in the bible that says everybody that is a christian will speak in tongues. "THE FIX"!!!
What fix are you looking for? Sounds to me like your looking to the world for the fix instead of looking inside yourself...search your spirit and the scriptures,or maybe that gift is not for you and your trying to force it to happen?
---Robert on 8/5/09

Michie, He is right, all do not speak in tongues, but the first sign of receiving the holy spirit is speaking in tongues.

michie, they are two different things........... one is a gift, the other you receive as proof that you have received the holy spirit.

We are in the same covenant as the Apostles, which is Grace.

So we received the holy spirit the same way... Act 19:1-6 Paul tells you how to be saved.

Acts 2:38 Peter stands up and tell the people how to be saved.
---batieste on 8/5/09

Michie, Corinthians they have been saved.. they have already spoken in tongues. Paul is correcting them on how to behave in front of nonbelievers. The first sign that the book is for the sanctified is 1 Corinthian1:2 to those sanctified in Christ...hint.... hint.

The book was not meant for those that haven't fully obeyed the command to be saved. He writes to those that are saved, not the lost people. Thats why is hard for people to understand.
---batieste on 8/5/09

Battie,

Im not the one misinterpreting scripture.
Its you.
You accept what happened in Acts, but you do not accept the chastizing Paul gives to those who judge others that can't speak in tongues in 1 Corinthians.
Paul was addressing one such as yourself in the scripture I gave. Go back and read them again.
He plainly states that NOT ALL will speak in unknown tongues. That the gifts of the Holy Spirit are diverse each one of us having different ones.
Why do you uphold one part and ignore the other is what I would like to know?
I know people who can't speak in tongues but can interpret tongues, and can prophesy, and discern spirits. They certainly have been baptised with the Holy Spirit. These gifts are the proof of it.

Romans3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

Jesus was the only one that was perfect(with out sin).

So, if you have sined your sins need to be washed away. And all need to repent for all sins no matter how small.

ST.John 3:5 except a man be born of the water and the spirit he can not enter heaven.

There is no way around this, that is a command from God.

From the book of Romans to Jude, they are meant for the water baptized in Jesus name filled with the holy ghost saints of God.

Now people are confused , because they think the books are speaking to them. they are not.

1 Corinthians 1:2 those that are sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be holy, etc.
---batieste on 8/4/09

Michie , you are mis interpeting the scriptures.

If you noticed, the corinthians was a church.

And if you really pay attention everyone spoke in tongues.

The writer is correcting the saints on how to behave in front of non-believers.

He says in 1 corinthian14:18 he thanks God that he speaks in tongues more than all of you.

And if you jump over to acts 19:1-6 he shows you the steps on how to be saved.

The Apostles are in the covnant of Grace, And so are we. That means nothing has changed.

We receive the holy ghost the same as they did. Acts 2:1-4 Act 2:33, Acts 2:38, Acts10:45-,

Acts19:1-6
---batieste on 8/4/09

Please see 1 Corinthians Chapter 12.

It states that not every member of the Body of Christ will have the same gift or manifestation of the Holy Spirit in them.
Each will get what God gifts them with.
Speaking in tongues is only one and a minor one at that.(1 Corinthians ch. 14)

For those who think scripture says that speaking in tongues is the only proof, check the scripture I have given and you will see you are in error and judge wrongly those who don't have this particular gift.

Senderrick, not being able to speak in tongues in nothing to worry about. Ask God what gift he has given you or what God's will is. Man's approval is nothing but God's is everything.
---miche3754 on 8/4/09

Do not worry that you cannot speak in tongues, for God grants different gifts to all who believe in Him, some get gifts of discernment, while others may get gifts of prophecy or healing, we all attain different gifts to help one another in our pursuit of Christ and to be able to protect one another from evil.
---nicole on 8/4/09

Not everyone has had an evil lifestyle that must be repented from.

Luke 15:7
"there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance".

Not everyone has learned to be "good and right and true" (Ephesians 5:8).

Being able to speak a certain way will not make your spirit/character any more compatible with God, nor will it increse your love relationship/devotion, it only increases pride/ego (decide what you really want).

Romans 8:16
"it is the Spirit himself bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God".
---more_excellent_way on 8/3/09

My question is are you saved and filled with the H.S.? You can NOT be baptized with the H.S. until you are saved and filled with the H.S. first. Spirit speaks to spirit. The evedence that you have the baptizim of the H.S. is speaking in tongues - if you do not, then your are not baptized in the H.S.
---Leslie on 8/1/09

The only thing that is truth is from the bible, yet no one has shown a scripture that is in context. I see a lot of people patting themselves on thier backs for telling stories of saints that have made mistakes in the past.
Everyone makes mistakes and sins. Thats why we must repent daily.
But even though we make mistakes God is God all by himself with out us.

Anne and Kathr, thank you for sharing TRUTH, even though we are living in a world where so many people distort and pervert the WORD of GOD, because they are haters of GOD and haters of HIS TRUTH as it is written.

These people claim to be people of GOD but in reality they are so far from being this.
---Rob on 7/30/09

Kathr and Mark Eaton~ Thanks for sharing those insights. Mark Eaton, do you have any special words of insight for batieste as well perhaps? batieste seems to believe that unless one speaks in tongues that person is not saved? Can you help him see the light more clearly...I have tried, but he does not seem to get it, thanks.
---Anne on 7/29/09

Anne, actually if your read about the Azusa Street Revivals, this is when tongues, and being slain in the spirit and all kinds of crazy stuff started happening here. Howling, uncontrolable laughter, and many believe it to be satanic.

I believe people will do anything to avoid the CROSS...You see, satan has convinced these people that they are superior spiritually because they manifest this spirit??? and then accusing others they are not saved unless they have it too.

It's easier to get slain than to obey. It's easier to pretend your spiritual by manifesting this then a daily walk of dying to self.

More later!

Anne:

I agree with you.

Even though I may speak with tongues I do not doubt that there are Spirit-filled people out there that do not speak with tongues. I do not see it as "evidence of the in-filling of the Holy Spirit" as some denominations proclaim. It is a gift, and not every gift is given by God to every person.

As you say, it is a lesser gift but I do not see it being emphasized in these days. Where and how is it being emphasized? To most, it will generate confusion, as it did at Pentecost.
---Mark_Eaton on 7/29/09

Kathr~ Very very interesting and would be great to see more people/pastors/Christians etc. expose that counterfeit side.

Why do you believe that tongue speaking is so 'glamourized' in our day when the Bible as a whole rarely speaks of tongues. When the Bible does speak of tongues it tells us the tongue-speaking should be for edification of everyone and not about confusion. It also speaks of tongues as a minor gift in comparison to other gifts, so I find it strange that tongues speaking is even a real issue at all in the Christian community. What are your thoughts?
---Anne on 7/29/09

Anne, I asked for scriptures, you didn't come up with any that are in context.

You think we can do anything we want that makes us happy and feel about our selves, And you call that being saved.

We don't make the rules up, they are already commanded in the bible and tell us what to do.

you think just by accepting God in your heart you have the holy spirit and saved, accepting God is the FIRST step.

Nicodemus did acknowledged that Jesus was sent by God, Jesus told him that he needed to be born of the water and the spirit.

So #1 those that accept God into there heart, need to be born of the water and the spirit like Jesus to Nicodemus. St.John 3:1-

markv john told his disciples and everyone else to believe on the one coming after him.
But they were also rebaptised in Jesus name. And they spoke in tongues like everyone else that received the holy ghost in the covenant of Grace. And we are in the same covenant, so we received the holy ghost like the one before us the Apostles.
This, right here is our example to follow. this is how we are saved... they were baptised in Jesus name and they received they holy ghost.

Batieste, Acts 19:1-9 is talking about Paul's uncertainty of the disciples salvation. Since all Christians receive the Holy Spirit at the moment of salvation (Romans 8:9, 1 Cor. 12:13) their answer revealed they were not yet fully Christians. They had not received Christian baptism (having been baptized only "into John's baptism) which further evidenced that they were not Christians (2:38). V. 4 "Baptism of repentance.. believe on.. Christ Jesus" These disciples did not realized Jesus of Nazareth was the One to whom John's baptism pointed. Paul gave them instruction not on how to receive the Spirit, but about Jesus Christ. They believed Paul's presentation of the gospel and came to saving faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
---MarkV. on 7/29/09

linda- The Holy Spirit decides when & where He will speak, not us. If a person has to make a decision when & where to speak, then the Holy Ghost is not using them.
---Betty on 7/29/09

Then the 'tongue interpreter' looked at me very seriously and said 'yes, you are truly speaking in tongues.' I was shocked by that statement and never went back there again.
---Anne on 7/27/09

I understand. A well known pastor, making a point of this very thing, pretended to speak in tongue. Two or three joyfully got up and interpreted. He then announced he was making it up, and to make a point. Is it an emotional reaction, can Satan counterfeit etc, etc????

It was a risky thing to do, but he grew up in a Charismatic Church and KNEW much of it was counterfeit. Then gave a great sermon on this very subject.
---kathr4453 on 7/28/09

batieste~ If you feel the need to speak in tongues, that is fine with me, I have no problem with that. But the majority of born-again Christians who walk in the Spirit do not. They concentrate their heart and mind on the greater gifts of love, mercy, faith, kindness, patience, righteousness etc etc.

It makes more sense to share these things in the English language (or the language we're accustomed to) rather than in a strange tongue. Some people like you find speaking in tongues to be edifying, but I on the other hand do not find edification in it.

Anne how does one receive the holy spirit ?

How did the Apostles recieved the Holy spirit?

After Nicodemus confess the Jesus was sent from God What did jesus tell him In St. John 3?
And why did paul question disciples of John about the holy spirit in Acts19?

please answer with bible verses that are in context.
---batieste on 7/28/09

batieste~ Speaking in tongues is not an essential to entering the kingdom of heaven. I do not speak about 'doing good deeds' to enter heaven...I speak about feeding to the Holy Spirit and abiding in the Lord...this is what the Bible teaches continuously. The Bible rarely speaks of tongues and when it does it refers to tongues as a minor type gift. Tongues are to be interpreted, or they are merely a source of confusion and nonessential.
---Anne on 7/28/09

Kathr~ Thanks. I really don't want to put down people who believe they speak in tongues, but I really don't want to 'promote' tongue speaking either as something a Christian should feel pressured to do as the person who made this blog feels somewhat concerned about.

When I was a new Christian I was 'church shopping' and attended a Charismatic church where they made those attending feel pressured to speak in tongues. They came over to me and I started to say a little gobledy-gook knowing full well it was just gibberish coming out of me. Then the 'tongue interpreter' looked at me very seriously and said 'yes, you are truly speaking in tongues.' I was shocked by that statement and never went back there again.

Betty, I am a bornagain Christian and for years lived defeated because I didn't know the truth. Years of studing ICor.13 & 14 Paul taught that tongues were a language and unless one could interpret keep silent, because the gift was given to give the gospel of Jesus to all men,the apostles did not knew their languages. Study this and use a concordance, Matthew Henry is great, and reference the word each time used, keep context of book and to whom originally spoken,in totality. You will understand by the Holy Spirit's teaching you (James 1:5). What most charsmatic churches do is a prayer language between them and God, broken in Spirit, but again ICor teaches this confuses the lost and is to be done in secret........

Anne, acording to Acts 19:1-6 you are wrong about receiving the holy spirit.
Paul asked John's disciples if they have recieved the holy spirit yet.
I'm sure that they lived holy. But why would he ask that if you recieve the holy ghost if you do good deeds, and if you already believe?
its not true, you can't get in to heaven on good deeds, and claiming you love jesus alone.
St. John 3 proves that also.Nicodemus confess that Jesus was sent from God. Jesus said except a man be born of the water and spirit he can not enter heaven.

Anne, Isaiah 64:6 All of us have become like one who is unclean,
and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags,
we all shrivel up like a leaf,
and like the wind our sins sweep us away

That means your good deeds can't get you in heaven, They mean nothing. your sins needs to be washed way.

St. John 7But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you, but if I go, I will send him to you.

Jesus had to leave first before anyone could recieve the holy spirit.

markv & kathr- Jesus meant exactly what He said in Mark 16:17, 18. Using your methods, how about this: In the beginning God created the Heaven & the Earth. (See Genesis.) Now what did He mean when He said that? Did He mean this: Revelation 21:1 "And I saw a new heaven & a new earth...."?
---Betty on 7/27/09

Don't worry if you cant speak in tongues. I don't speak in tongues and have no desire to. Because you don't speak in tongues does not in any sense mean that you haven't received the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is exactly that....it mean you now walk according to the Holy Spirit, and no longer after the desires of the flesh.

Remember, tongues is a minor gift...pursue the great gifts...love, mercy, knowledge, peace, kindness, generosity, all the wonderful fruits of the Spirit. I don't recall Jesus worrying about people speaking in tongues...rather He was concerned about the content of the character and abiding in Him and His righteousness. God bless.
---Anne on 7/27/09

Interesting too, Paul teaches in 1 Cor 14 concerning the Gifts....

Does the eye say to the foot, I have no need of you...He said that in reference to those who thought they ALL should be an EYE. He is making this analogy concerning gifts of tongues. Just like today, they were also confused and believed EVERYONE should have the Gift.

A careful reading will explicitly tell you NO!

Betty, what Mark 16:17,18 mean is, signs were promised to the apostolic community (Matt. 10:1, 2 Cor. 12:12), not all believers in all ages though as is explained in (1 Cor. 12:29,30). After explaining Christians are of one body of Christ and members individually, God had appointed them first apostles, second prophets, third teachers. Then he asked, "Are all apostles?" explaining that not all of them would be apostles, not all teachers, or prophets then he says, But earnestly desire the best gifts, and yet I show you a more excellent way" Meaning the body of Christ is diverse and God sovereignly designs it that way. What they had been doing is desiring gifts for selfish reasons.
---MarkV. on 7/27/09

Mark 16:17 STILL says And these signs will accompany those who believe drive out demon in my name and speak in new tongues etc...
Then some people want to go to verse 18 , and when they read about snakes, that voids what verse 17 says. NO it doesn't void. those are all the sign that believe.
Then they want to bring up the 1 Corinthian 12:30.
They should have read 1 Corinthians 1:2 To the church of God in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be holy, together with all those everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christtheir Lord and ours
That means that they were saved already, they spoke in tongues and was baptized in Jesus name.

The nation Israel had failed to heed Gods message which He gave through their own prophets, so the Lord told them that at a future time they will hear His message through tongues (languages) other than their own. "For with stammering lips and another tongue will He speak to this people" Isaiah 28:12. The gift of tongues was a sign to Israel. The words "this people" in Isaiah 28:11, refers only Israel. The abuse of tongues shows the neglect of the Scriptures which teach its proper use.

This purpose of the gift of tongues, namely to communicate Gods message to Israel, is verified in the three passages in In Acts 2. Tongues-speaking was used as a missionary or evangelistic tool in fulfillment of Isaiah 28:11.
---kathr4453 on 7/24/09

kathr- My suggestion is believe what Jesus Christ said. Mark 16:17 He said, "And these signs shall follow them that believe ...." Don't you know the signs follow because of the presence of the Holy Ghost?
---Betty on 7/24/09

What is being missed here is that the gift of "tongues" is NOT given to all believers.

Rom. 12:6 "Since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, each of us is to exercise them accordingly: if prophecy, according to the proportion of his faith".

The Lord does not need his body to be comprised of believers who all have the same gifts. He needs believers who have different gifts who use those gifts for the benefit of the church.
---Mark_Eaton on 7/24/09

Betty what about verse 18?

16:18 They shall take up serpents, and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them, they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

Let's continue what Jesus said in verse 18 to put into perspective.

A snake bit the apostle Paul while he was on the island of Malta, and no harm came to him (Acts 28:1-6). However, he did not go looking for the snake in an effort to prove his faith. The snake bit him unexpectedly, in front of others, and God protected him as promised, using it for His Glory, and many believed.

1 Corinthians 12:30

Denice, I'm sure John's disciples did live a submitted life to God. And they did live Holy. Paul still asked them if they have received the holy ghost since they believe, Acts19:1-6.

After talking to Paul they were baptized in the name of Jesus, and they received the holy ghost and spoke in other tongues. They received the holy spirit like all the other Apostles.

If you are a believer in Christ you have already received the Holy Spirit. The Bible speaks of the Holy Spirit as the Comfronter. The Bible speaks of the gift of the tongues as a gift given to some, not all. 1Corthians 13 even says there are far greater things. There are other gifts that people are blessed with such as the gift of Teaching, Servant, Mercy, Healing, Prophecy, ext.. Look in your bible's concordence under "gifts of the spirit" for more details. There is nothing to fix. You are one of God's children and blessed with the Holy Spirit to guide you.

kathr- You are full of contention, not willing to believe the scriptures when they are right before your eyes. I'm not your Bible tool for you to order me to look up verses you should look up for yourself. Feast your eyes on Mark 16:17 Jesus Christ said, "...they shall speak with new tongues...." Yet you accuse me of the sin of presumption, saying I presume everyone saved speaks in tongues. Was it presumptuousness for Jesus to say that? Jude 1:20 "But ye beloved, building on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost...." Samuel had a prophecy from God. That's one hint. How do you know Adam & Eve had 10 fingers & 10 toes. Back it up with scripture.

Derrick, The first sign of receiving the holy spirit is speaking in tongues, many confuse this with the gifts in 1 Corinthians. its not, Its the first sign that you have received the holy spirit.

If you have been tarrying for the holy spirit and having problems, its weak faith. You have to build your faith up and keep trying.

I understand how you feel, it took me a while to receive the holy spirit.

stay encouraged, keep trying, God promised it to you.

Derrick, when I received it, it was wonderful, it just not speaking in tongues like these unbelievers think. There aren't words that can describe it. God spoke to my spirit, And who wouldn't want that?

ST. John 3:5 say except a man be born of the water and the spirit he can not enter heaven.

The Apostles didn't received it that way, read Acts 2:1-4, or read Acts 10:45-. If you receive it at the moment of be living and raising your hand why would Paul ask John disciples have you received the holy ghost since you believed in Acts 19:1-6 ?
And when the disciples finally received the holy ghost, they spoke in tongues.
---batieste on 7/20/09

It is the Holy Spirit himself who decides who gets what gifts. And while I appreciate and am thankful for the gift of speaking in tongues I do not believe it is a requirement of salvation. Neither do I believe that you should be overly concerned about speaking in tongues

This whole matter of speaking in tongues has been twisted(made a requirement by some churches) but it really is adding to the word and adding to the word is not good,in fact it's terrible, one recommendation would be to praise the Lord in your normal language and some day you might be surprised by what takes place.

Start praising the blood shed by Christ and the spirit will witness to/with your praises.

Christians have the power from God to do anything - at the proper time and only when God needs you for a specific purpose. Not all the prophets in the OT did their job every day, but only when God needed them for a specific purpose.

Living a christian life is a 24/7 lifestyle - not a once a week pep talk dished out by denominational "churches." You shouldn't be only hearers of the word, but doers also. Do an online KJV bible search for "one another," "each other," and "encourag." And don't forget the two commandments Jesus spoke of (and it doesn't say anything about tongues).

But, when God calls you to do something, do it! Or you'll find yourself in a similar circumstance as Jonah.

If ANY person "desires" the gift of tongues for any other reason than to reach out to a people group, or even an individual, that they cannot normally communicate with due to language barriers, then they are missing the whole point of spiritual gifts. These "gifts of the spirit" are not given for people to be able to say,"look at me I have the gift of ....", but to "edify" or build up, encourage others in the name of Jesus Christ. Tongues would be more necessary for someone who encounters any people who have not heard the Gospel and do not speak a common language with the person(s) speaking.

kathr- How about this for starters: Isaiah 59:2 "But your iniquities have separated you and your God, and your sins have hid His face from you, that He will not hear." I was not online yesterday to answer your & Monsieur pierre's remarks/questions on the Saul/Heaven blog - more's the pity. I notice it is now full so that I cannot answer, but, maybe next time. I noticed on that blog that you refuse to believe the Bible.

"Is my inability in this area something I should worry about? " No.

"Tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not:" 1Cr 14:22

Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far offfor all whom the Lord our God will call."

40With many other words he warned them, and he pleaded with them, "Save yourselves from this corrupt generation." 41Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day

TRISH
1Cr 14:1-5 Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts,.. he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him, howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.
He that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification... exhortation... comfort.. I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied:

The idea that a believer can obtain the gift of tongues (perhaps not all gifts),
is inferred from Paul saying "desire spiritual gifts" and "I would that ye all spake in tongues".

We receive by asking.

Obviously, tongues is not the "best" or most "important" gift, but it is a blessing to many individuals.

No one can speak in tongues untill they repent and then the sprit of God comes in and you began to speak in tongues
---Betty on 7/16/09

Betty, please provide scripture to back this up.

Mary- All sins need to be repented of for the Holy Spirit to be willing to communicate with a person. Acts 2:38 Peter said to them, "...repent & be baptized...in the Name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, & you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost."
---Betty on 7/17/09

Betty, what is it she's supposed to "repent of"? That she can't speak in tongues? Just wondering, thanks :)
---Mary on 7/17/09

Lilbranch: Please show me what verse supports the idea that a believer can obtain a spiritual gift if they really want it. I would love to have been given certain gifts, but I know of no scripture that says I can obtain a gift I really want.
---Trish9863 on 7/16/09

Speaking in tongues is a gift you can have if you want it. It's not needed for salvation nor is it a sign of "spirituality", so relax.

If you believe you have received the "baptism in the Holy Spirit" (no space to elaborate on this here, but I believe you understand), just get alone with the Lord....you don't need people laying hands on you and praying for you.

Pray to speak in tongues....then open your mouth and say whatever happens to come out. If just one syllable, repeat it reverently unto the Lord. Continue and more will be added.

Luk 11:13 If ye... know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall [your] heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

From Betty to Brenda I can't improve over what they said, but will add my plea that you stop trying and there is nothing to fix.
We are commanded to pray in the spirit and with the understanding also. Paul wrote this to the immature christians at Corinth. They, as charasmatics often do now, concentrate on the spactacular gift and not the edification of the brethren, hence Paul wrote the letters to "fix" their problem and remind the church what was really important.
Through the centuries not much has changed and most who speak in tongues today have no idea what they are saying and are edifying no one as commanded. The "experience" on Sunday seems to suffice.

\\ you don't have a problem, recieving the gifts of speaking in tongues comes when we reconize the Holy Spirit as the verbal part of God,\\

God isn't divided into parts, so the words "verbal part of God" are meaningless.
---Cluny on 7/16/09

If people will do their research they will learn the FALSE, DISTORTED, and PERVERTED teaching regarding speaking in tongues was started in Topeka, Kansas, in the year 1901, by a person by the name of Charles Parham.

This is not just hear say, it is a DOCUMENTED HISTORICAL FACT.
---Rob on 7/16/09

you don't have a problem, recieving the gifts of speaking in tongues comes when we reconize the Holy Spirit as the verbal part of God, His purpose is to lead you into all truths and bring you light so that you can know the perfect will of God. First, cleanse your heart with repentance, humble yourself before Christ, and then open your mouth and ask the Holy Spirit to speak through you, and create in you a relationship with a loving Father God and Savior, Jesus Christ. You can't make this happen, He will come when you really get real and desire the Kingdom of God above all else. HE comes into a yielded heart and prays through us to Jesus, then Jesus prays to the Father, and the Father tells the Holy Spirit His will and the Holy Spirit tells us.

Obviously, you are "head over heels" in love with God (heartbreak love) and you are not convinced that being able to speak a certain way will improve your genuine feelings for God.

It would be hypocritical of you to do anything that other people do in order to show YOUR love for God. Your relationship to God is supposed to be PERSONAL, not IDENTICAL to others. It is supposed to be a "love devotion" that is based on "the GREATEST of these" (1 Corinthians 13:13).

Let God have a personal relationship with the real you (no "self abasement", Colossians 2:18) and have a "faith for faith" (Romans 1:17, Hebrews 11:6) and let Him teach you the "DEPTHS of God" (1 Corin. 2:10).

Can you say that Jesus is the Son of God ,God in the Flesh,Born the son of man?.
if you cannot ,you have not received the Holy Spirit,it is he alown who once received allows us to say this ,demons cannot say God in the Flesh born the son of man. 2) ask yourself is there any motive in myself speaking tongues? for what purpose,in a church I was some time ago it was the in thing! is this the only reason? Please refer to 1 Cor. ch 14 for answers. Blessings to you ,Rod
---Rod on 7/16/09

Not speaking in tongues is NOT a problem that needs fixing. Not speaking in tongues does NOT mean you do not already have the Holy Spirit. If your church is teaching you that it is a problem because you don't speak in tongues, then you are being lied to and need to find a church that teaches the truth.
