What is your interpretation of the Gift of Discernment of Spirits? I have a friend who has this gift, and sees people who have passed on. How do you interpret this?

Moderator - That isn't the Biblical Gift of Discernment. What you discribe is witchcraft.

I had a friend who used to call up her Grandmother when she was troubled. She told me you can see your Grandmother I'll teach you how. I said no thank you, I don't want to see my Grandmother or any other dead people. Moderator is right, thats not the Gift of Discernment.
---Darlene_1 on 2/17/10

Mima, I am so proud of you. I disagree sometimes on some things and others I am with you brother. I can call you a brother. I think it took great courage for you to admit your pride. It is a weakness on most everyone, especially those who claim perfection and why others are not perfect. Blessings brother,
---MarkV. on 1/20/10

Mima I am surprised you shared about pride but I admire you for being so forthcoming about yourself. I've never seen the pride you speak of in others used by God in the Gifts of the Spirit. For myself I have always been humbled by the very fact God would chose me to be used in such a way. I've always felt when anyone seeks to understand the Gifts and asks about them, whether it be discernment or any of the others, then it is my duty as a servent of God to share the wonders of what God does for and through those who obey his Word and his will. I know without the empowerment of God's Holy Ghost I can do nothing, therefore, how can I have pride in what I do,when it isn't me that does it to begin with. I am only a vessel,an instument in Gods hand.
---Darlene_1 on 1/19/10

A word about pride. I realize I'm guilty of pride. Many people I know who have been given a gift from God exhibit this characteristic called pride. Most deny that they are prideful but to our own selves we must be true. It is a very fine distinction between reporting what God has done in your life and swelling up with pride about it. I recognize the age of Grace is here, I recognize that I'm forgiven, yet pride is a big problem with me. And is the reason for much prayer.
---mima on 1/19/10

Exzucuh, you are displaying the sin of Pride. If you have been glorified already, you would not glory in your perfection. In fact you told Mima that he was not living his life by the word of God but by the word of the world. But not you. That you are special and he is not. You suggest you are sinless and he is not. That is called self-rightous and prideful behavior.
Saving faith produces righteous behavior.
---MarkV. on 1/19/10

mima ...why can't you say this about yourself and what the word says you are. We do not live by sight, but by faith of the Son of God.
If you let his word live in you, you may ask the Father what you will and he will do it.
But if you let the word of the world live in you, you will suffer by the unbelief that comes from that word. Faith comes by hearing
and hearing by the word so let that word be in you that was in Jesus. his word is Spirit and life. And it gives life to your dieing- mortal body.

---exzucuh-------- congratulations---------

Yes I am, according to the word of God. I am by faith living by the word of God and accepting it for my life as the truth and not the negative things that the world says about me. I am seeking the Kingdom of God and taking it by violence through the weapons of my warfare that are not carnal, by which I cast down every carnal imagination that comes from the prince of the power of the air. I have been born again, translated, regenerated into the image of the second Adam. Through super abounding grace I am resurrected through Baptism and made synonymous with the death burial and resurrection of Christ. And made one with the Father and the Son through the Holy Spirit.

---exzucuh I failed the test of living for Jesus in a spotless an unblemished body. Now may I inquire if you are living for Jesus in a spotless and unblemished body?
---mima on 1/16/10

If you want to discern something discern whether or not you are living For Jesus in a spotless an unblemished body. You are the Body of Christ. What are you doing with Jesus 's body.
1 Corinthians 6:15-20 Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ? shall I then take the members of Christ, and make them the members of an harlot? God forbid. What? know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body? for two, saith he, shall be one flesh. But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit. know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.

I have this gift, and I don't see dead people, that doesn't sound right. For me, discernment is like spidey-sense, a really strong Holy Spirit 'knot' that I feel in my chest. I can sense the direction of the evil entity, kind of like radar. I know it sounds kooky, but it's real. Those that have it know exactly what I'm talking about. Some can see physical evidence like a glow, etc... but not everyone. Also, it's not just for discerning evil, it's helpful in feeling the workings of the Holy Spirit and directing you to people that need help. I can't read people's minds, read their mannerisms, or anything like that, it's truly a spiritual pull/push that drives me. Tough to explain if you haven't experienced it before.
---Jerome on 1/15/10

The gift of Discernment is not limited to only seeing evil in people, neither is it some form of psychosis. You can also see demons and hear them speak. My gift came when I gave my life to Christ at 12, and by 14, I could see and hear demons, and feel evil in people as a tangible thing. I have come to understand that this gift is best used as an intercession for others and for yourself and almost always confirmed through prayer, the WORD, and the circumstances surrounding it. Advise your friend to find a mentor in her church who operates in this gift for guidance. Above all, she needs to stay in constant prayer and meditation, because only through revelation knowledge will she learn more about her gift. I hope this helps your friend!

I have the gift "discernment of spirits." I never seen any dead people- which is clearly not godly, but I can sense the presence of evil and/or evil spirits- usually in people and in places rather than in circumstances. I think that this is Biblical- to sense the presence of evil and recognize deception etc. I don't think that it is witchcraft to see the manifestation of an evil spirit or a demon- many normal, even Christian people have seen demons, they aren't really witches unless they are summoning and aligning themselves with darkness.there was a Biblical story in which a man was summoned by a witch. however your friend needs good Christian guidence. If you're a Christian, encourage him/her in their personal walk with Jesus.
---Jaime on 10/27/09

I believe prayer & deliverance is needed because what she is seeing are demons taking form as something familiar. If she can see into the spiritual realm after prayer, then it was only that her gift was distorted & she will need proper guidance. I'd be happy to give more information if wanted. Also, does she have a relationship w/ Christ? I don't think you should not talk to your friend, nor do I believe that that is what God would have you to do. He didn't abandon us in our sin and confusion, so why do that to someone else. " Love your neighbor as yourself." -Luke 10:27 If she is not saved, I pray this will lead her to salvation, freedom, wisdom & understanding.
---Candace on 10/27/09

I don't know what your friend has....psychosis...maybe just a good imagination. The "gift of discernment" mentioned in the Bible applies to living people. I would do NOTHING to encourage your friend in her so-called gift. In fact it might be wise to just keep your distance!
---Donna66 on 7/24/09

Many will go out in the name of Jesus, and claim to have spiritual gifts. When the time of judgement comes He will say to them,'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!'

Matthew 7:19-25 21"Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven,... 22Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?' them p23....'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!'

I think she is trying to lure Christians into the devil's snare.

Psalm 37:12-13 12 The wicked plot against the righteous
and gnash their teeth at them,

13 but the Lord laughs at the wicked,
for he knows their day is coming.

I am afraid your friend is decieved.She/he is seeing famaliar spirits (demons) this is not of God.This person needs prayer for deliverence. If you had the gift of discernment you would already know this. It's no bad reflection on you.God gives the gifts as HE desires.
---shirley on 7/24/09

That is witchcraft to the max.

Thank you all for your responses. I really appreciate it.

The discerning of spirits has to do with the discerning of the attitudes and intents of the living.
Isa 29:15 "Woe unto them that seek deep to hide their counsel from the LORD, and their works are in the dark, and they say, Who seeth us? and who knoweth us?
Act 5:3,9 But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back [part] of the price of the land? Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord?
Rev 2:2 ...thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars:"
Mat 9:4 And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts?

ashlyn....Which sheriff's departments has she assisted? Why doesn't she go tell the law enforcement officers in EVERY jurisdiction where there is a missing person where they can find that person? She is feeding you a line and you are biting it hook, line and sinker. Stay away from her. I have met a couple of these people who say they have thise gift and they were both scam artists.

1 Corinthians 12:7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.
1 Corinthians 12:8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom, to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit,
1 Corinthians 12:9 To another faith by the same Spirit, to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit,
1 Corinthians 12:10 To another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another [divers] kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues:
1 Corinthians 12:11 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.
---MIchael on 7/17/09

Moderator is RIGHT, what you are discribing IS witchcraft - which is FORBIDDEN by the Bible. The gift of discernment of spirits is: When you can distinguish between what is of God (spiritually) and what is of the devil (spiritually) - an example is Paul and Silas knowing that the spirit of the woman (fortunteller) was of the devil. It is also being able to see Heaven, Hell, Jesus, the devil, angels, and demons - though NOT what you discribed. It is closly realated to the seer anointing, where in both cases, you learn to use your spiritual eyes to see things.
---Leslie on 7/16/09

The reason people are attracted to this idea of "gifts" is because then they can imagine themselves to be SUPERIOR and "giftworthy" (pride). Argue this all you want, it doesn't change the fact (PRIDE is what they seek, not GOD).

There is no such thing in TRUE scripture (you may be reading false modern scripture) as "discernment OF SPIRITS". We are to learn to "discern" properly between GOOD AND EVIL (the knowledge gained in the Garden of Eden).

Hebrews 5:14

"trained by practice to distinguish/DISCERN good from evil".

The "fruits" of GOD'S SPIRIT are owned and manifested by GOD. OUR SPIRIT/character should have the "fruit of LIGHT" (Ephesians 5:8).

SusieB - Thank you for your response. I am very torn as to what to think. My friend is a very devout Christian, so I am having difficulty understanding. She has spoken to a number of people regarding deceased relatives and has passed on information about them. She has also worked with various sheriff's departments to help find the bodies of those who have been killed.
---Ashlyn on 7/16/09

Your friend is not using the gift of discernment. She is practicing witchcraft just as the moderator says. Discernment of spirits is a gift which enables those of us who have that gift to discern the spirit behind a living person.
