Steveng-- I wasn't talking about "preaching" to a child...what would I preach? I'd have to know, first of all, what THEY think. If they are young enough to confuse fantasy and reality (which is usually very young) they listen.

Yes,kids brains are immature and their consciences, too. I agree that that what parents are for! But my thinking is that kids will encounter lots of things in life. I'd rather shape their thinking when I can, then protect them from everything and let them form their opinions when they are away from my influence and have only their peers to guide them.
---Donna66 on 7/30/09

steveng - *You were either an exceptional child knowing the difference between fantasy and reality or you don't remember how you really thought at the time. Many children don't.

Perhaps the major problem we have is that we all too often think kids are really stupid and cannot learn to think for themselves. How long does it take a kid to realize there is no Santa Cluas living at the North Pole?

*And it's those children Satan is after.

While true there are many that are false teachers that seek to place our children into the bondage of fear teaching that there is a demon behind every bush who will eat up our children and send them into the fires of hell.

Cluny: "I've never seen her say that on her web site. Where did you hear it?"

It was about a year or two ago in a British newspaper. Rowling would never put it one her website - that would encourage more kids to inquire about the school.

Cluny: "When I was a child, I knew that such things as Wizard of Oz, Snow White, and Peter Pan were simply make-believe."

The movies back then were simpler in context. You post, "I knew that such things as... were simply make-believe" You were either an exceptional child knowing the difference between fantasy and reality or you don't remember how you really thought at the time. Many children don't. And it's those children Satan is after.

\\You MUST be careful what you open your eye gates and ear gates to. Watching Harry Potter movies is not only a sin, but could cause you to become demon possessed. Moderator, if you watch these things, I question whether or not you are a Christian.
---Leslie on 7/30/09\\

Seems to me Jesus Himself said that the principal question was "What think you of Christ? Whose Son is He? Who do people say I am? And Who do YOU say I am?"

Not, "What think ye of popular literature and entertainment?"

Most of us are mature enough not to let fiction interfere with our faith, Leslie.

Donna66: "Whether it is a sin or not, everyone must be guided by their conscience."

Children haven't fully developed their conscience. In fact, their brains haven't fully developed. That's what parents are for.

Donna66: "But I don't think it is harmful to children if explained by a parent."

When have chirldren really listened to their parents preach - especially when they really want something.

One more thought: how can parents today teach their children when they themselves are children.
---Steveng on 7/30/09

Leslie~ So so true...we must be so careful about what we open our eyes and ear gates to. That was very sound and wise advice especially in the deceptive day we live in today. Nothing out there is worth messing up our soul over..."If in doubt, leave it out."

I always wonder what kind of life a person has who has time to watch all the Harry Potter movies and read all those books. Watching television is the same thing. Most of it is garbage.

I think I'm better seeing where you're all coming from, even though I'm still exceedingly exceedingly hesitant about it. Actually, I'm not a huge fan of TV overall (not merely HP etc.) ...it just seems to magnetize so many people, waste people's time, desensitize people from what truly matters, could cause a substantial lowering of godly values, and easily brings about a lukewarm attitude for God rather than being 'hot' for God ...agree? Do many of you believe that TV could be a form of idolatry to multitudes of people??

You guys don't like ouija boards though do you...those are 100% not fantasy, and I'm quite sure you all know that. Thanks and God bless.

I like those HP movies. When I was little, a nutty-buddy of mine broke both his legs attempting to jump between two houses while wearing a Batman suit he got for Christmas. The rest of us knew better than that as well we knew not to poke each other's eyes like on the Three Stooges.
---Nana on 7/30/09

AMEN !!!!!! Donna.
That is what I did, and believe me my children are happier for it.
And Anne, all fantasy has some kind of witch craft. Anything dealing with the imagination can be dangerous when we do not tell our kids the entire truth.
Teling the truth takes away some of the mysterious allure and they are less likely to be weakened by it.
It comes down to being honest with yourself and your children.
---miche3754 on 7/30/09

There is no Harry Potter, no Hogwarts School,
no Lord Voldemort, no Hermione Granger, no
Albus Dumbledore etc. Thus the books and movie are fantasy.

Fantasy has to have some connection to reality. Witchcraft is a reality. If you think your child confuses the two, educate him...it will remove any allure the occult may hold for him.
---Donna66 on 7/29/09

Fantasy theme is not the same as a witchcraft/sorcery theme.
---Anne on 7/29/09

Whether it is a sin or not, everyone must be guided by their conscience.

I viewed only one of the movies and have read parts of the books. But I don't think it is harmful to children if explained by a parent.

It is fantasy. Most of childrens literature is fantasy. Children almost always understand that. The Wizard of OZ has the Wicked Witch of the North. Snow White has a witch. Many classic fairy tales have wiches and wizards who cast spells.

I suppose some children may think there actually is a Hogwart school until told otherwise. It may not be any more harmful than the children who injured themselves trying to fly like Peter Pan.

Few children become adults still believing childish fictions.

You, and many other adults, know the difference. You, as an adult, could figure things out for yourself.

But children are a different story - especially the younger children who don't yet know the difference between what is real and what is fantasy. They have not experienced the world as adults do. I have read all the Harry Potter books and have seen the movies.

While the Bible does condemn witchcraft, it does so on the basic of communication with the spirit world. Regretfully there is some of that in the HP series which I would disapprove of despite the fact it is all set in a fantasy world.

However, if we were to remove all the books found in libraries that have fantasy themes and that may depict or suggest something anti-biblical, there would probably be very few books that we could read.

The key is to educate our children to live lives free of worldly entanglements.
---Lee1538 on 7/29/09

As I posted earlier, a person does not need to watch or read the books to know they are bad.

Miche~ You're a good friend, and I know you and I discuss things for the betterment of each other.

But when I read Deut. 18:10-18 and so much other scripture, I just could not downplay any movie, book etc. that seems to glamourize sorcery, or create an appeal, fascination or intrigue toward it. It bothers my conscience immensely. It would bother me to think that if I told others that such movies were basically harmless, I would be lying to them. I know I have to give an account to God one day for all I ever promote or demote etc. and if I promoted something like HP before the world, the idea fills my heart with the fear of God.
---Anne on 7/29/09

batieste~ Yes, correct, in anything we watch we need to carefully explain to our children anything there that might have negative consequences. You mentioned that there may be a tiny bit of 'magic' etc. even on a show like Sesame Street. There could be a fortune teller on Sesame Street and then we would have to explain to our children that fortune telling is very very contradictory to the Bible's teachings and strongly warned against. However, 90+% of Sesame Street is pure and innocent.

I do not watch CSI, but I do not believe it promotes murder but is about normal investigative police work etc.

Some shows inspire an intrigue and fascination in sorcery. This is not a childish matter, but can have serious negative consequences.

Anne, my sister, love you!

I believe if its a deep concern of yours don't watch it.
Each of us has a weekness that would open the door for the enemy to cause havoc and harm to us.
I don't have that particular weekness. I have no desire to do witchcraft in the way HP states in the movies and books, and neither do my children.
Ive stressed the fact that they are just fiction and not possible to even do.
I tell them that with God all things are possible and that they are to make sure that they appeal to God NOT magic/wichcraft.
We each know our children and should do everything possible to make sure they are equiped. If you have these concerns, I would not ever tell you to do anything that would damage your walk with God.

Cluny: "Please give us one witchcraft spell or procedure that one can actually learn how to do from the HP series, betty.

Bet you can't!"

The HP movies and books give details about how to do dozens of spells. There are a few kids in my neighborhood who would like a spell to get rid of a teacher or a school bully or to get straight A's in class. And the list goes on. Think back when you were a child and wanted to become or wanted to do what you read or watched on TV. There was this one kid in school who hated me and wanted to wish me into the corn field. He saw it on the Twilight Zone.
---Steveng on 7/28/09

TV and the movies are a very powerful media especially to children. Many times they try to mimic what they watch. I'm sure you heard of that computer saying, "garbage in, garbage out?" Well, a lot of content in the movies and TV are filling our children's head with garbage. Biblical prophesy says the the end times will be the worst time in history and I truly believe that TV, movies, and even the computer are mostly to blame. Sure, sometimes (few and far between) TV, movies and computers are used for good, but if you compare the use and context of TV, movies and computers to three to four decades ago you'll see my point.

As I said before, even if a small number of children continue on the dark side, Satan is thrilled.

As I posted earlier, a person does not need to watch or read the books to know they are bad. That's why christians have prophets, apostles, and teachers to teach christians what is proper and what is not - to keep christians on the straight and narrow road to the Kingdom of God. You may want to fill your head with garbage, but many people don't. Would you want to experience killing someone just to know what its all about?

Miche~ Hello again dear friend. I see your point, but I still have very real concerns here.

Disney movies are mostly quite dear. Yes, there is an evil witch in some of them, but it is not promoting witchcraft, but rather the concept that evil (the evil Satanic type witch), may have success but does not win in the end. (sort of like the devil will not win against God)

A movie like Harry Potter, Charmed, etc (even though I can't speak a great deal about Potter since I've never watched one in entirety), seems to promote an intrigue for sorcery, witchcraft etc. which is a huge difference and deep concern.
---Anne on 7/28/09

if you want to get techincal, sesame street has characters in it that do not exsit. And yes some of them do magic.

Harry Potter is ok to watch.
Yes the bible says not to perform or get caught up in magic, but there are movies and tv shows about murder, like CSI. No one is complaining about that.
I dont think this subject is warranted.
Its about a whole lot of adults that arent acting like adults.

Solomon's weakness...idolatry
David's weakness...lovely ladies
My husband's weakness...alcohol
My weakness...Things of mystery that could lead to love of sorcery

Why does the Bible tell us to walk in the Spirit?
Because if we don't, we'll go straight back to our old crooked paths of the flesh and straight back to our old worldly passions, which we'll love more than our precious Lord.

Solomon- turned to his love of idolatry.
David- succumbed to adultery, but fortuneately repented of his crooked path and returned to strait and narrow.
My husband-alcohol free for decades.
Me- Can't watch Harry Potter, Charmed etc or very easily could return to the old crooked path.
Walk in the Spirit.
---Anne on 7/28/09

Anne,
scripture say that to some things are unclean(sin,)while its not to others.
It depends on how each thing affects you spiritually.
Its like with me, I don't see anyhing wrong with wearing pants, jewelry, tatoos, drinking, etc. some do. These things don't disctract me from God. Where others, they do. I certainly wouldn't do these things around my brother or sister who is weak in these aspects.
I didn't mention Sesame Street.
I said Disney movies. Sis, theres no difference. If you restrict from seeing HP, then you must restrict from Aladdin, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White. I explain to my children and accept full responsility for anything they watch or listen to. If you were to ask them, they would say they know.

cluny- I've seen a dvd on the Harry Potter movies & a real witch who repented & became a Christian gave her views about the matter (as well as other practicing witches). They said also that it teaches witchcraft, both the books & the movies. Any idiot ought to know that books & movies about witchcraft will intrigue people, especially children to find out more about witchcraft & to experiment with it. Those who are in permissive environments, where Harry & friends are considered just cute & fun & ok, are the ones most likely to pursue the matter of witchcraft. Harry Potter does not fit the Phillipians 4:8 pattern.

One can't compare Sesame Street and so forth to Harry Potter. Both may have the fantasy aspect in common...but a show like Sesame Street is an innocent pure show that teaches caring values and basic learning skills to children. Harry Potter is a show to be much more careful of. I really can't speak about Harry Potter since I have never viewed a movie, but I'm quite sure it is heavily geared toward witchcraft/sorcery which the Bible warns very heavily about. I think the Holy Spirit should be warning all true Christians to be on the alert toward such movies.

A doctor may not have to have cancer in order to heal it, but he does actually have to study cancer and read books about it in order to do so.

Furthermore, if someone has a crackpot theory about cancer, the doctor would have to study these writings to be able to refute it.

Jo Rowling herself has said that in all of her book signings, she's not met a single person who told her that the HP books were a doorway that led that person into witchcraft, wicca, or sorcery.

Have you perchance met ONE of your "millions of kids" that you said to look at who have been so led? Do tell.

Mark E., I'm glad brother that God has blessed you with free time.
Thats a luxury I don't have. I'm a single mother and so if it gets done its done by me or me hiring someone to do it, LOL.
My children have seen all of the HP movies except the new 1 and I'll be taking them to see that 1 as well. I see no difference between them and other childrens movies.
Both of my children are grounded in God and know that these movies are not and not even possible. That knowledge comes because I have given it to them through God( prayer, etc.)
I believe that it starts with what we allow our children to believe in. I give them God's truth and they know what is real and not real. If we dont tell our children the truth, they will believe lies.

Yes, I do believe we need to stop and rest from our work and enjoy some free time.

However, our lives are mostly about free time. I include myself in this. Let me give you an example.

As a lot of you know, I attend a "mega-church" but I am involved in the small group ministries. We have a "handyman" ministry for men to help single mothers, the elderly, and shut-ins do repairs to their homes. We contribute one Saturday every 8 weeks, very easy to fit into your schedule.

We have 175 men in this ministry out of the 3000 men who are members in our church! Even with a small commitment, few of us are willing to work and even fewer are actually working.

Paul said all things are permissable but not all things are profitable.

Why would you want to feed your spirit with witchcraft stuff? It will come back to haunt you and you will be giving satan place to your life.

I actually didn't believe what I just wrote until my close friend went to see the last Keith Hedger movie, I think it was Dark Knight.

She is so messed up now I can't even believe it. A demon now speaks through her and rips her daughter apart. I've watched it happen. Her eyes actually dialate and they leer at me, I can see the demons manifesting.

I would be very very careful about what I choose to watch...what I choose to view and allow into my mind.

I've only seen glimpses of Harry Potter movies, and that was about all I wanted to watch of that...it did not feel right to me.

Especially do not watch a horror movie. It's not because you're going to turn into a demon or something...but because it puts terrible images in your mind that are very unhealthy.

Not only Harry Potter, but the vast majority of movies/TV viewing does not bring about edification. There are a few clean movies to relax with and enjoy, but we should wisely choose.

I grew up on Star Trek, Star Wars, Lion witch and the wardobe, Lord of the rings,
Disney(fav is Cinderella).
All having "withcraft", etc, and I am serious about God. Why is that? hmmm, because I had parents that taught me what was real and what was fiction. What was right and what was wrong.
It is our responsiblity to teach them what is truth and not. HP is pure fiction, and my kids know that.It has not harmed either one of them. They don't even believe in witchcraft.
The witchcraft in the Bible is real while the witchcraft in movies is cearly fiction.

Harry Potter is only fiction and if people actually partake in witchcraft because of it because they find magic cool then maybe it's not such a good thing. I know many people who like Harry Potter and aren't even into witchcraft, they just think it's fiction. It isn't a sin to watch entertainment or read it, unless it influences you to do those things.

As long as it doesn't control you, you won't have a problem. What worries me is how people obsess over something forgetting about God, that is the real problem.

At the end of the day someone might read Harry Potter or watch it for entertainment but they will always have God in their lives. It's just a story people.

Who cares?

My opinion is from personal experience of having been tempted by Satan. All the witchcraft stuff that your children are exposed to will one day come back to haunt them, even if it's when they are 40 or 50. I don't speak as one who hasn't experienced the overload of evil/anit-God things. It will catch up to them and if they do not turn to God in the last moments, they may find themselves dead. It's so easy to be tempted by the worldly power of Satan and the more you expose your children to it the worse off for them later in life.

I speak so heartily against, just as a drug-addict tells Christian parents to not expose their children to drugs or things talking about drugs except to tell them it's against the Bible and God's desires for us.

Harry Potter books & films are about

Good versus Evil
Courage versus Cowardice
Loyalty versus Treachery
Love versus Hate
Smiles versus Sneers
Sacrifice self for Friends
Life versus Death.

Much like StarTrek or Doctor Who

They all contain more morality than cowboys & Indians ... and they don't pretend to portray reality.

If something is not well written I cannot finish it, I give up with irritation. I don't actually want any occult stuff lying around my house as they are conduits for evil spirits. I saw a Harry Potter film and again thought it was rubbish (on the television). Sorry not to go along with the mass mindedness, but I cannot help but say what I actually think, even though it is sure to bring a backlash from the brainwashed public.

Isioma do you know so little about Christianity, and so disrespect God that you have spelt His Holy Name with a small 'g' as in the gods that idol-worshippers love? I suggest that Harry Potter did inflict some damage on your soul but you do not know it. Sorcery is banned by God in the Bible. In ordinary fairytales it is seen as the evil it is, but in Harry Potter it is seen as good. You don't even notice you are being brainwashed. Well, I suppose that is how brainwashing is done best. If you knew the history of the builders of Washington DC you would be surprised at the amount of sorcery it involved in it's mapping out.

Witchcraft and idolatry are undeniably sins. (Gal 5:20)

2Jn 1:9-11
Whosoever transgresseth,
and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God.

He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ,
he hath both the Father and the Son.

If there come any unto you,
and bring not this doctrine,
receive him not into your house,
neither bid him God speed:

For he that biddeth him God speed
is partaker of his evil deeds.

Those that believe the Harry Potter fantasy books are harmful and teach witchcraft should go a step further and read 'the wisdom of Harry Potter - what our favorite hero teaches about moral choices' by Edmund Kern and 'the gospel according to Harry Potter' by Connie Neal who is a Christian educator.

All too often those that condemn books get nearly all of their information second hand from preachers who spend much of their time finding fault with others. Neither will spend any significant amount of time in finding out what the truth really is.

I don't think Harry Potter is a sin as it is not in the ten commandments where all sins are listed. However, I do think it is sinful as to what they are doing with the cinematography, it is so black/dark you can barely see the movie as the previous one was just as bad. However, Harry Potter's information regarding the alluding to occultism can provide insight as to how these type of persons think and how to identify them when they are around you...not the magic but the behavioral patterns and words they speak as demons are imitators/falsifiers. Harry Potter and his friends fight the demons and try to remain good with the twich of a wand which is only a metaphor. You see the real Potter's only meant for the movie to be entertainment. TSS.

OH PLEASE... my daughter has seen them all and they didnt inflict some evil witchery into her soul lol... she is a well rounded young woman about to embark on college in the fall... when you put too much energy into finding the bad in everything you wont enjoy things for just 'entertainment any longer' good grief....people STOP THE INSANITY

This is such a funny subject to me that people are actually so inconfident about their ability to teach their children to love god, cherish and adore him above all things that they fear a fictional charcter conjured by a woman trying to make a living will destroy their childrens faith...here was a woman working a minimum wage job who's gift from god was her imagination but its the devils tool because the story did not involve jesus. I am a devot Christian and Loved reading the harry potter books as a child. I prayed for god to give me great abilities but I never once wanted the occult, magical powers from lucifer or any such thing. So please let your children explore their imaginations and love god all it once I know its hard but quite possible

\\ .... Please don't take your children to the movies or let them read the books, which are rubbish anyway and I could not get into one which I came across.\\

In other words, you've not read any of the books and don't know what they actually say.

I agree this movie isn't good for young children.
---shirley on 7/24/09

If not your children, then your teens who will be exposed to it eventually.

Hopefully someone will come up with a way to make Christianity more alive in the near future. I have a way, but I am still working on my new journey.

Harry Potter is about teaching children that wrong (occult) is right and that right is wrong. It is very subversive. Also it makes them interested in magic. Please don't take your children to the movies or let them read the books, which are rubbish anyway and I could not get into one which I came across. It was so bland and boring not at all like the classical children's writers. Obviously some group deliberately promoted them because of the occult agenda. As soon as they were declared best sellers everyone wanted to buy them.

I must admit, I love Harry Potter movies!

I was a fan before I got saved and have continued to love these movies and characters. I no longer have children so it is only an issue for me.

I find these movies less harmful than horror/slasher/occult/demonic films like The Ring, The Grudge, or SAW. Perhaps that is the secret behind HP movies being so influential.

However, is it a sin? Watching them does not edify me, so it is a WASTE of my Lord's time. I should busy with be my Lord's work and if I am not, then it is wrong for me to do. If it is wrong for me to do, then James 4:17 "Therefore, to one who knows the right thing to do and does not do it, to him it is sin" applies.

stephen: "I think HP could be a good tool to explain to your children about sorcery and why it's a sin."

Christians shouldn't use bad things to teach about good things. That surely would create conflict in the mind of a child. A child's mind does not think like an adult. When they see some powerful things happening in the movies, they will surely mimic it. Face it, HP's magic is more inticing, more alive than christianity. A powerful learning tool for parents is setting an example and make christianity come alive. Unfortunately, parents don't know HOW to bring christanity alive.

Read Acts 19:19.

They in effect praise the burning of books of sorcery.

All Hail Book Burning!
---stephen on 7/23/09

There is no way you can learn a single spell or act of sorcery in any of the HP books or movies.

The "magic" in HP is strictly fantasy. There is no invoking of higher (presumably evil) powers. It bears no resemblance to Satanism or Wicca.

In fact, the villains are totally evil. (And are eventually punished by incarceration or death.)

I wonder if those who censure the series have actually read any of the books or seen any of the movies.

No, it's not a sin.

Harry Potter is a movie, just like Aldin,The Little Mermaid, Snow White, Beauty and the Beast, and the tv shows Bewitched, and I dream of Jeanie.
People are going overboard with this.
If you feel like Harry Potter is tempting you to play with wounds DONT WATCH IT.
---batieste on 7/23/09

The Bible speaks about not participating in witchcraft. Harry Potter is all about witchcraft. That sounds like sin to me.
---SusieB on 7/23/09

I think HP could be a good tool to explain to your children about sorcery and why it's a sin. So watch part of the movie and explain that these things are sinful and will lead to your destruction. I'm not sure that teaching your children to be entertained by things of sorcery is a good thing. A walk in the park or seeing God's animals is far better for them.
