To answer original question I do speak in tongues every day The Bible explains that speaking in tongues is praying in the Spirit 1Corinthians14,14 Praying in the Spirit is for building up your most holy Faith Jude 20 Its also part of the armour of God which we were told to put on Ephesians6,18 Fortunately if your unable to pray in the Spirit it's not hard to get
Acts 2,39 tells us the promise (of the Holy Spirit) is available to everyone
Jesus said all who ask receive Luke11,9-13 Ask and keep asking to receive the Holy Spirit and you will know when you have received it because you will speak in tongues the same as in the bible and you will receive power Acts1,8 and its awesome 14 years on for me its still fantastic to have the Holy Spirit

The Baptism of the Holy Spirit with speaking in tongues and power (Acts2,4 Acts1,8)
Was it from God or men?
---Rodney on 12/11/09

Mat 21:25 The baptism of John, whence was it, from heaven, or of men?

So, was it from men?
Then its from heaven! Not of men!
Does God need a man to give you something?

Mat 11:27 All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father, neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.

Must a man put water on your head, for one to be baptized? The outside of the cup!
John himself said, he that cometh after me is mightier than I!
Someone who can do, all I do and more! And so much more!
Will you believe this? No, why? because of men!

JOH 4:21 Jesus said to her, "Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father...
...23 "But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such to worship Him.
24 "God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth."

1Cor14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful.
15 What is the result then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding. I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding.

Your 5 senses cannot pray in the spirit.

Just for information, tongues you receive when you get the Gift of the Baptism of the Holy Ghost don't need an interpreter. They aren't the Gift of Tongues. 1 Corinthians 14:2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men,but unto God:for no man understandeth him, howbeit in the Spirit he speaketh mysteries. This shows what tongues do,speak to God and there is nothing wrong in praying to God in tongues. That is what happens in church when the whole church begins, all at the same time,to pray to God without interpretation. When God gets ready he makes a hush and the message will come forth and then you need interpretation. Hope that helps y'all to understand the difference between the two different uses of tongues. God Bless

The Seq-Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.

Thanks and thanks again Seq. I grew up in a charasmatic church and the lack of balance and maturity on the issue of tongues remains. We still behave as the immature children of the churches at Corinth.

Those who use the gift weekly in corporate worship rely on spiritual gymnastics to explain "a sign to them that believe not"
---larry on 8/11/09

Im not saying you cant speak in Tongues, but it clearly is "as the Spirit gave them utterance." Not you, but the spirit!

Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.

But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church, and let him speak to himself, and to God.

Where is the interpreter? Everyone is speaking, but it seem no one know, what is being said. Ask them. We're speaking to god! No, your not! Tongues are for a sign! If you're talking out loud, you're speaking to all, you must have an interpreter! Or you are not!

It Is every day for some,do as long as God initiates it,you dont do it on your own. You just dont get a bunch of words together to try to mumble-jumble. That is making lite, mockers of God will have their end in God's punishment if they dont repent.
---Lawrence on 8/10/09

Phil the Elder~ WOW, PERFECTLY SAID!!!
---Anne on 8/10/09

It would be interesting for the tongue speakers to write in tongues online. Then we could get an interpreter to interpret what you wrote and unravel your message. Anyone up to do that?
---Anne on 8/10/09

Im trying to say?
Its, no one! Try to understand this, no one can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost. So, anyone who believes in the lord, weather he feel it, know it or just think it, by the law of faith, has to have the holy ghost.

Dont want to believe this. Why, does it make you feel, as if you have one of the cheep seats?

Mat 20:12 Saying, These last have wrought but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us, which have borne the burden and heat of the day.

If someone believes they are not of the body, are they not of the body?
If all is the eye, where is the hearing?
---TheSeg on 8/10/09

Yes, see here all these building? Not one of them will remain standing!
And keep your faith, as you see it. For when the blind lead the blind, someone will show them the way.

But, you other, if you would be so kind, as to explain all of, 1Co 12!
Most of all explain 1Co 12:3! Because, if you make one part a lie. Then all is a lie!

But, fear not! I know my father, all you ask him, believing, he will do!
And boy, do we believe! And what things we believe!
But, let no one fool you! There is only one teacher, God!

God bless you! He has blessed you already.
I just like saying it! What a day it will be!

Brother Phil,
You are right but their own languages was speakiing in tongues. I think what Leslie refers to is a prayer language with groanings that cannot be understood.
The real gift of tongues is evangelical and a sign of the reverse and breaking of the curse at Babel.
That is why in the few cases where tongues is use properly with an accompanying interpretation the message is always evangelical expounding on scripture we already have available.
You are right there is no point to tongues at Pentacost if not for the spreading of the gospel.
In most cases charismatic churches misuse the gift in corporate worship where no interpretation is given, no one is edified, and worse the unsaved are bewildered.

The bible does say u will recieve power when the holy spirit comes upon u. speaking in tounges is 4 all of us. Some have quenched the spirit. I did 4 many years. I thought it was just me. The spirit flows from our belly. We must ask to be filled with gods holy spirit. The lord will fill us. Dont doubt and think its just u. The tounges is a personal prayer language. Satan cant understand. The lord knows and wants 2 fill all who will ask.

>>>>The Bible does say that the EVEDIENCE of baptizim in the H.S. is speaking in tongues (Acts 2:4). If there is NO evedience, there is NO baptizim in H.S.<<<<< (sic)

Really? Acts 2:4 says:

" And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance."

That's ALL it says... a simple statement of fact.....nothing about the baptism in the Holy Spirit ALWAYS evidenced by speaking in tongues...nothing about those who do NOT speak in tongues NOT being baptized in the Holy Spirit. The surrounding verses don't say anything like this either. Careful about making Scripture say more than it ACTUALLY says!
---Donna66 on 8/5/09

Nicole - You are AGAINST the Bible. The Bible does say that the EVEDIENCE of baptizim in the H.S. is speaking in tongues (Acts 2:4). If there is NO evedience, there is NO baptizim in H.S.

i do not agree with you leslie, for it does not say anywhere in the bible that if you do not speak in tongues you are not baptised in the holy spirit. Many pentecostal churches believe you must speak in tongues to be a "true" christian, but this is not so.speaking in tongues is just one spiritual gift, plus it does state in the bible that if you are speaking in tongues and there is not someone around to mediate and explain to others what you are saying, it is wrong, this is not of God. I do not have the gift of speaking in tongues, but god has granted me the gift of discernment of spirits, and we all must work together in christ with our unique gifts to protect one another from evil.
---nicole on 8/4/09

The Bible says in Jude to pray in the H.S. and build yourself up on your most holy faith. You must be saved and filled with the H.S. first, then you can ask for the baptisim of the H.S. Spirit speaks to spirit. The evedence of your baptism in the H.S. is speaking in tongues - if you do not, you are not baptized with the H.S.
---Leslie on 8/1/09

Could not have said it better phil.

The miracle of Pentecost was not speaking in tongues. It was all listeners understanding in their own language when the speaker was addressing them in Greek, the opposite of what happened at the tower of Babel. It was the miracle of universal understanding.

Tongues is a spiritual gifts but the least useful of all of them, strive for Wisdom, it's actually useful.

Anon ... Why assume I was trying to make a point?

I was just asking for information

Thanks for giving it!

Alan of UK,Hi,I know you didn't address me but I would like to say this, when I have a prayer for someone,I know in my heart and mind what I want to say,and pray for,I probably would begin speaking English and as I pray what I desire the Holy Ghost takes over and prays in tongues, but I still know in my heart and mind why I am praying. The same is true for me when I am praying and praising God when I am worshipping God. When I am alone and speak in tongues without a special purpose in mind, then I can pray for the interpretation and God will give it to me. I don't know if thats the way it is for others but I do know God meets us where we are so it could be different since no two people are in the same place with God.
---Darlene_1 on 7/29/09

alan of UK, I'm not sure what point you're trying to make...but to answer your questions:

Anon ... When you pray (as opposing to praising) in tongues, do you understand the meaning of the sounds you make? NO

Do you know what your prayer is about? NO

When you pray over someone in tongues, do they understand what you are praying?

NO, but the bible tells us we are praying according to the will of God, so what's your point?

Do you think that all genuine Christians speak in tongues? Not sure. You gotta ask God that one.

If you want to witness to people of a different language...take a course, it doesn't take that long.
I speak Italian, German, French, Mandarin Chinese, some Hindi and some Korean.
the rewards of a two way conversation outweighs the babbling gibberish of "glossolalia"!

As a person who speaks in tongues(prayer language) I would have a terrible time trying to practice speaking in tongues. The reason I would have a terrible time is I cannot tell you when I am going to speak in tongues. Although I'm aware that some people believe you can practice speaking in tongues.
---mima on 7/28/09

You don't really practice speaking in tongues, you use them. So if you're asking, is speaking in tongues something you use daily then the answer is yes.

You can also pray in English. What I was taught 26 years ago was that praying in tongues is praying according to God's will..Romans Chapter 8 tells us, "We know not how we ought to pray, but the Spirit makes intercession through us according to the will of God."

So use them everyday and you will develop an entire prayer language if you haven't already.
---anon on 7/28/09

Tongues is not something you practice at all. What many fail to understand is that tongues is a result of receiving the Gift of the Baptism of the Holy Ghost,Acts 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues,as the Spirit gave them utterance. It is the Holy Ghost, dwelling within you who speaks through you, using your tongue. You pray and ask God to give you the Baptism of the HG. Then surrender your total being to God. When you receive the HG then your part is to just keep on praying and praising God everyday and letting the Holy Ghost use you as God chooses. You may or may not speak in tongues everyday but the point is not to seek tongues but seek God,the giver,of all perfect Spiritual experiences.

No. If you do that, it is yourself speaking, not the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit speaks when He will.
---Betty on 7/28/09

As I've said previously, if speaking in tongues is something you can practice at will, then it's not a gift but a technique.
---Cluny on 7/28/09

I do not speak in tongues. Never have. You don't need to speak in tongues to have a close love relationship with the Lord. You read His Word and pray and meditate. You show His love to a lost and dying world.
