You can give money to your church at anytime. I believe any money given should always be given, cheerfully. Not as show or to receive praise from the pastor or church. Some people give for these reasons. Guess what? Your money will be cursed and not blessed. This is very important to understand.
Some people give out of guilt. Wrong reason. Some people think if they give money, more will be given back. Not necessarily true. Its all about the condition of our hearts when we give. Again God loves a cheerful giver.

Almost everyone I know who has reached this relationship with the savior says they well exceed 10% and consider the tithing figure a minimum. For those who are fully committed 10% seems to be in their rear view mirror. My late father gave almost 30%.

God doesn't want money..He already owns it.
He wants us 100%.
Who can say they will lay their life down for their brother?
This is what God wants. He wants all the glory, all the praise for everything.
Has anyone you know reached a relationship with God where God owns everything in their life? We must remember that we are only stewards of what God already owns.

Tithe with your life not just with money

Obewan ... perhaps you should look in the UK?

My church does not force people to give 10%

And of what it does receive, it uses two thirds to maintain itself, to pay the pastor a fixed national level salary, and to support other churches which are in poorer areas.

Of the other third about half goes to support Christian missions, the other half goes to carefull selected charities which are doing God's work such as promoting health in the Third world.

And that is not untypical of the UK

The way I see it, if the "local church" practiced what they preach, and that is that God increases on what is given, all the church has to do is start to give. Then the church would get more, and then the church could give more, and then they would have more than they would know what to do with. If it, give/get concept, works, the church should be an example.

I know I sound like Judas when I say this, but people would be better off using their tithe to help people.

That is exactly what 1/3 of all tithes were used for in the Old Testament.

I would be very hard pressed today to find a church that still does that, yet, they are always in a huge rush to get every member to "pay up" and bring the full 10% "into the storehouse" lest a "curse" be sent donwn upon them. If they really belive that, then why are not those same pastors not afraid a curse will befall them for ignoring the OT teaching regarding the "poor tithes"?

Is there any biblical text that describe when and how much one should "tithe", in the New Covenant? Actually, tithing (10% of your earnings) as done in the Old Testament is no longer applicable in the New Testament, New Covenant, although the Early Christians still gave generously, and many still follow this golden rule.

It is strange that you are concern about when others "tithe".

I gotta agree with you here brother.
God is not looking for 10%. God wants all of us. He wants to be #1 in our lives. If everything we do is not to glorify, up lift and edify the Body of Christ, it is time for a good long look in the mirror.

The day and date are meaningless and more for the convenience of church staff, opeations and billing.
You could follow the Jews and make a yearly assessment based on the size of your family to a Protestant church and be right in line if you are hung up on a percentage.
The key is being fully committed and giving of your money AND time as if you are fully committed.
Almost everyone I know who has reached this relationship with the savior says they well exceed 10% and consider the tithing figure a minimum. For those who are fully committed 10% seems to be in their rear view mirror. My late father gave almost 30%.

I really don't understand why people tithe at all. I know the verses for it, but I don't understand why they tithe when some churches just use the money for things like carpeting and stained glass windows.

There are verses that say that the Son of Man had no place to rest his head.

As for God needing a house, when are we going to realize that maybe God is too big for a house? But we can't seem to wrap our minds around how big and awesome God truly is. I know I sound like Judas when I say this, but people would be better off using their tithe to help people.

CJ...Maybe once a month is when they get paid.

I never put anything in the plate, unless for something special. It goes straight from my bank to the church's bank
---alan8566_of_uk on 8/21/09

Deuteronomy 14:22-29 > to me, this means the tithe was one tenth of the "increase" of a person . . . not just the income a farmer got by selling certain products. And the Jews would bring their tithe of grain and animals etc. to where they would assemble as God's people. And they *themselves* would enjoy * "whatever" * they desired to eat of it, and their tithe would be used to support the Levites (priesthood tribe) "and the stranger and the fatherless and the widow". So, tithes were for *personal* enjoyment, of the giver, and for the ministers and their families and needy people. But certain churches, today, do do not do this. So, do they really have tithing?
---Bill_bila5659 on 8/21/09

Why is this an issue? And, how do you know their actions? Are you one who spies on the envelopes in the collection plate too to try to see how much people are giving? For shame!

How do you not know they are maybe giving to a church they would visit while on vacation? Or how do you not know they might give for one particular week to the Salvation Army or homeless shelter? Or how do you not know that they did not make up for it by giving a double tithe at some time later in the year?

Many people at our church only give once a month. If you watch them on the wrong 3 Sundays you might WRONGLY presume they give nothing!

You have no clue how people tithe, unless you know their hearts. My church has an automatic debit system that people can voluntarily participate in, where the money is taken directly from checking accounts on specific dates in the month. Therefore, many people put nothing but the Communication Card in the offering plate. Would you judge them for not putting money in the plate?

Get your focus off what others do, and concentrate on getting your heart aligned with God's/
---Trish9863 on 8/20/09

Why is your focus on that? And how do you know some people do this? Did they tell you? or are you guessing? Isn't that between them and God?

With all of the focus on tithing, we are missing the bigger picture, "Seek ye first the Kingdom of God and His Righteousness and all these things will be added unto you."

If you seek me with all of your heart, you will find ME. Give your heart to the Lord and see what mighty things He can and will do. Don't focus on who's tithing, who's not tithing, etc., That's a snare of the enemy.
