In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise
---JackB on 12/10/09

JackB: Rodney on 12/09/09 had answered your question well. Before a person surrenders, the Holy Spirit has being working on that person from outside to make him/her understand the word/plan of God and believe in God & Jesus Christ. Immediately a person surrenders to Christ, the Holy Spirit continues to work on him/her from outside. He guides, helps, trains that person until such a time that the person relinquishes everything that will not allow the Holy Spirit to occupy him/her. That point I can call a point of total surrender. It is from the point the person may be baptized with the Holy Spirit by my own understanding. The Lord Jesus said to the disciples, ..the Holy Spirit dwells with you and shall be in you (John14:17).
---Adetunji on 12/10/09

Adetunji,
We cannot follow Jesus Christ without the Spirit of Christ living in us. That is complete hogwash!

Christ said "for without me you can do nothing" and "with men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible"

The Bible is very clear on how things work, but there are people who are too proud to let God do His work in them and would rather take credit for it themselves...

Change of mind and heart, faith in Jesus Christ, the adoption takes place, God gives us His Spirit as proof we have been bought by the blood of Christ. Then change takes place.

Hi Jack and Michael As the scriptures you haxe pointed out also emphasize both believing and receiving the Holy Spirit are necessary But in the Bible it is not an automatic process For eg The disciples believed and yet did not have the Holy spirit till Pentecost
The Ephesians believed but did not have the Holy spirit (Acts19,2) and the Samaratins believed and were even baptised but had not received the miracle of the Holy Spirit Acts8,12,15-17
Even Jesus had to pray to receive Luke3, 21 , it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened,
And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son, in thee I am well pleased.

Ephesians 1:12,13

That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ.

In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise
---JackB on 12/9/09

to receive thhe holy spirit you must be saved. how do you get saved, simply believe

I cor 15:1. Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand, 2. By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.
3. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures, 4. And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

There is nothing in acts which contradicts what Jesus says in the gospels together they give a complete picture Jesus said it was better that He go away so that the Holy Spirit would come (John16,7)
Jesus was local then but the Holy Spirit is everywhere John the Baptist said Jesus was to Baptise in the Holy Ghost and fire (to burn up the chaff-sin)Pauls letters are written to Christians telling them how to maintain and understand the salvation they already have
.Romans 1,8 Paul didn't need to tell the Romans how to get saved but Romans has information for saved people who responded to the question What must we do? Acts2,37 Although Paul does leave us in no doubt that without the Holy Spirit one cannot call oneself a Christian Romans8,9

Would this statement be called legalism?

"Unless you follow the book of Acts you are not saved.......
---corey on 12/4/09"
---mima on 12/5/09

Well put Rodney, most people would like to believe that we "accept Jesus as our personal savior" (which is no where in the entire bible) and whammo we are saved for ever! They also like to believe that we accept Jesus, when it is the other way around. God calls us. For us to think that we accept him and he is worthy for us is blasphemy! Most people simply do not even read the book of Acts or for that matter do the things commanded in Acts. Then they think the rest of the books of the New Testament are written to them. The rest of the books written to SAVED churches. Unless you follow the book of Acts you are not saved.......
---corey on 12/4/09

Acts 10s a turning in Peter's understanding. In Peters explanation of what happened (Acts11,14-17) Peter went to tell Cornelius how to be saved. Then Cornelius spokes in tongues like Peter at the beginning, so Peter knew that Cornelius had been saved. Peter couldnt see Cornelius heart. Peter's friends thought wrongly that nonJews couldn't be saved no matter what was in their heart. 1t tells us the beginning of Peter's walk as a Christian started at Pentecost not when He confessed Jesus but when he received Holy Ghost. Speaking in tongues is how someone else knows you have the Holy Spirit. Having the Holy Spirit is how we know we have Jesus. 1John4,13 Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.
---Rodney on 12/3/09

You will receive the Holy Spirit by walking in obedience to God/Jesus Christ/Holy Spirit continually. Acts 2, the disciples were baptised with the Holy Spirit as they continued to obey the word of the Lord Jesus that they should wait in Jerusalem until they will receive power from on high. Acts 10. Cornelius family sent for Peter as the angel of God instructed them, they heard the word from Peter and they believed in their hearts.

Here is a defining statement.
"When the Holy Spirit comes to you, HE will CHANGE you and you WILL know it."
---duane on 9/11/09

My love for Christ has increased a thousand fold since my being saved took place.
---mima on 9/11/09

Duane, I agree with you brother, and here is why.
First, a person who is lost does not have God. And all people who come to Christ is because they have a love for Christ or else they would not be coming to Him. How can they come without the Love of God in them? If God is Love, and they don't have God in their lives, how can they come to Christ?
Second, they believe they can have faith while lost to come to Christ. When it is God who gives them saving faith so they can believe and come to Christ. Faith and repentance are gifts to those who are born again.
Third, if they are saved without the Holy Spirit bringing them to life or regenerating them, how can they enter the kingdom of heaven without been born again?
---MarkV. on 9/11/09

A lost person doesnt repent of sin to be saved, he repents towards God to be saved.(through faith). Only the Lord can set a person free from sin.
All must Change their minds and believe on HIM so they can receive repentance that comes from GOD. This is the work of the Holy Spirit. When the Holy Spirit comes to you, HE will CHANGE you and you WILL know it.
---duane on 9/11/09

Repentance is simply changing your mind about God and who and what you are in Christ. To repent and be baptised is to change your life towards God in Jesus Christ.
*****

antichrist to Gods Word - repentance is to TURN AWAY from past SINFUL LIFE Rom 3:25, Acts 3:19, 20:25

John the Baptist (who baptized in water) Eunuch was baptized in water ...water cleanses one from past sins

the FLOOD was a baptism with water ...God cleansed the earth of sin

without baptism and a REPENTANCE TO GOD of your former life one cannot receive the GIFT of HIS Holy Spirit Acts 2:38, 5:32
---Rhonda on 9/10/09

Repent and be baptised.
Baptism came from the washings or Mikvah, baths. A cleansing. People understood it to mean a change in life perspective. To be cleansed of your old way.

Repentance is simply changing your mind about God and who and what you are in Christ. To repent and be baptised is to change your life towards God in Jesus Christ.

That is when you are ready to receive the holy spirit. There is no difference between holy spirit and holy ghost. It is just an old way of saying the same thing. There is no second blessing, second baptism, second anything. There is only one baptism and one faith. The Nicene and Apostle Creeds agree on those facts.

Tracy, your statement,"You receive the Gift of Holy Ghost after baptism 'by the laying on of hands' ONLY through proper priesthood authority." Opens up the question who can baptize someone? Please give your answer .
---mima on 9/10/09

You receive the Gift of Holy Ghost after baptism 'by the laying on of hands' ONLY through proper priesthood authority. The Gift of the Holy Ghost All honest seekers of the truth can feel the influence of the Holy Ghost, leading them to Jesus Christ and His gospel.
---tracy on 9/9/09

By admitting you are powerless over your life and submitting your life to HIS will, not your will. Meditation is very helpfull, and God does not send the Holy Spirit to the "casual observer" Simply pray for God's guidance and invite him to fill you with the power and knowledge of the Holy Spirit You ask and you shall receive, you knock and the door will be open I hope this helps you as much as it has helped me. GOD IS GREAT
---john on 9/9/09

catherine can you give scripture reference that supports your belief?

Because Acts chapter 2, veryse 8, Peter says, REPENT, BE BAPTIZED in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. He's not referring to Water Baptism, Peter is referring to Holy Ghost Baptism.

If you read the entire book of Acts, only one person was water baptized, why? Do you know why? Because when Jesus was water baptized, the Dove came down from heaven and rested upon Him. That Dove represents the Holy Spirit. That day Jesus exchanged water baptism for Holy Spirit Baptism. It doesn't automatically come upon us, you get it as the book of Acts tells how.

I find it interesting the use of get. GET saved, GET salvation, GET the holy spirit. None of which is biblical. Receive the holy spirit, receive salvation, receive grace, receive reconciliation. That is because God already gave. We cannot get from God what he already gave freely.

You receive because you believe what God has already done to humanity through Christ. The reason many do not receive is because they do not believe. If someone tells you that you have a million dollars in the bank in your name, freely to take, it does you no good to not believe it. It's still yours, it's still requires you to believe. But you still live in poverty because you have not received.

You recieve the "gift" of the Holy Spirit once you take in the diety of Christ. Read any one of the Gosples. The word of God clearly says in John 14 that he left the Holy Spirit for us. . . once we receive Jesus we receive the gift. Dont be bambozzoled by what "man" says. . . jumping about and rolling on the floor and such is not what we think. . .

THE BIBLICAL ANSWER:
Luke 11:9-13 (KJV)
9 And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you, seek, and ye shall find, knock, and it shall be opened unto you.
10 For every one that asketh receiveth, and he that seeketh findeth, and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.
11 If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent?
12 Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion?
13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?
---Gary on 9/8/09

The book of Acts tell us, "By the laying on of hands."

Read the book of Acts - you will see that they laid hands on people and Baptized them in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Find someone who has the Baptism of the Holy Spirit and ask them to pray for you to have it. Study Acts and the scriptures in there about how you get it. By the laying on of hands.

To Whosoever Has An Ear To Hear?

Through receiving the Living Waters of God's Word(Christ Jesus), we're born again by the washing of regeneration & renewed with the indwelling Spirit of the Holy Ghost : sent as our Comforter. Titus 3:4-7
---Shawn.M.T. on 9/7/09

"How do you get the Holy Spirit?"

No one 'gets', as in to procure, the Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit is given as a gift.

Believe on the Lord Jesus, The Christ, and you shall be saved. With actual salvation comes the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit. As you are empowered to yield, submit, and to adhere to His Spirit, without opposition and/or rationalizations, you are immersed into His Spirit. Rather than seeking an outward sign, look within to discern whether that which is produced of the Spirit is being made manifest within you, to be reflected without.
---joseph on 9/7/09

John, you must be born again of the Spirit to get the endwelling of the Spirit. For it is the Holy Spirit who testifies of Jesus and makes His truth known to us, once He does, we confess Him as our Lord and Savior.
No amount of free will can make a person born again, it is an act of God. The Spirit comes and quicken's the heart, and brings it to life. Without that quickening of the Spirit a lost person continues towards his own destiney.

When you get saved, the Holy Spirit comes inside of you. To get the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, ask God for it.
---Leslie on 9/5/09

Same way you "get" the Son--by faith.
---Cluny on 9/5/09

obey > do exactly what God has you do, and this will get you into living in the Holy Spirit. But this means unconditionally being open for howsoever God at each moment will have you do what He wants. You have Him by obeying Him . . . in His peace > Colossians 3:15.

If you stay on Daddy's lap, you have Daddy. But this means very close and immediate correction, if we stay with Daddy > Hebrews 12:4-11. Notice how John was so immediately corrected in Revelation, when he sinned, because He was close to God > Revelation 19:9-10.

But if you play out back in the swamp, you will get eaten alive by mosquitoes and their diseases of emotional troubles and degradation of pleasure seeking.
