Christian Women With Short Hair

I know that Christian women are supposed to wear their hair long, according to 1Corinthians 11:3-15. But would it be shameful for a woman with a medical condition to have short hair?

Even Paul said that there is no ordanince regarding this issue. It was never meant to be a point of dispute which is sin in and of itself. The Lord doesn't care about hair length or circumcision but rather the condition of the heart. "An evil heart of unbelief" and lack of "love" are issues to be concerned about.

Some scripture is specifically addressed especially in Paul's letters. He is responding to specific problems in specific locations.

If you see a sign on a park bench that says WET PAINT it does not mean that Christians should not set on park benches, it means don't set on this bench now because the paint is wet.

You have to put your self in the position of the writer to understand what he/she actually means.

Paul's letter are in Greek scrip all capital letters, no spaces between words and no punctuation, if you pars them wrong you change the meaning.

I see nothing in these passages that forbids a short haircut for women. It's all about having her head "covered". If she has hair, if it's not "shorn", (i.e. shaved) her head is covered.
The very fact that there is so little explanation makes it seem like hair length had a cultural meaning well understood by the people of the day.

Contrast that with this admonisment.
Which ACTUALLY goes to the heart of things.

1 Peter 3:4 (King James Version)
But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.

Rhonda -**...one picks and chooses how they will be "christian" then IGNORES DISMISSES and DISCREDITS Gods Holy Word with LIE that Apostles wrote foolishness and their words are hollow for entertainment purposes.

In other words there are those who will not accept the fact that scripture tells us that we should rightly handle the word of God.

2Ti 2:15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.

One of our daily prayers should be that the Lord will examine us to see if there is anything within us that displeases Him. This is one prayer He will always answer.

No. Also many women who have thinning hair will buy wigs which look good.

Those that judge on external appearances simply reflect the fact that they are really not mature spiritually.

thankfully God provided guidelines unnecessary to "judge" one's appearance when several scriptures detail ....danger of believing smooth watered down buffet style christianity where one picks and chooses how they will be "christian" then IGNORES DISMISSES and DISCREDITS Gods Holy Word with LIE that Apostles wrote foolishness and their words are hollow for entertainment purposes

Carla I have never had my posts edited I do notice if I post across several topics in one day not all posts get posted ...maybe that has something to do with it??? Could Moderator tell us if we have any posting limits
---Rhonda on 9/23/09

Some women have short hair as their scalp is not very heathy.

Never seen a ball headed woman but I believe they are out there.

And simply put, short hair on some women looks better than long hair which takes far more time to care for.

Those that judge on external appearances simply reflect the fact that they are really not mature spiritually. They apparently need such things to denigrate others hoping to make themselves appear more spiritual.

1Pe 3:4 but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in Gods sight is very precious.

Rhonda I'm glad to see that you got to explain about prostitutes having short or shave heads I said basically the same as you have stated but it took someone else to get it posted!

From what I hear, short hair in that day was a sign of a prostitute
****

so the song goes ...it's a mixed up world girls will be boys and boys will be girls - how true ...and at one time ONLY prostitutes wore makeup ...now the god of this world has duped mankind today in HIS WORLD where even little girls wear makeup

self professing christianity FOLLOWS worlds ways mixing profane with Holy - True Christians follow Christ and are told to be SEPARATE from the world 1Pet 2:21, 2Corin 6:16-18

as for your inability to comprehend protection of angels simply due to CHOOSING reasoning of men who discredit and dismiss detailed scripture Apostles LEFT todays Chrisitans by CAREFULLY consider mans reasoning MORE than Gods Holy Word
---Rhonda on 9/23/09

Rhonda--
The phrase "because of the angels" doesn't explain much..
Mostly, what I get from these verses is that it's not what's on the outside (hairstyle, jewelry etc) that makes a woman beautiful, but the spirit that is within. A woman should aim to please her husband in head covering or hairstyle. From what I hear, short hair in that day was a sign of a prostitute.

AND, men should not wear caps!(?). Do men observe that? Do men observe ANY instructions about haircuts, or beards in the Bible? Long hair on a man in Jesus day was a sign of a Nazarite who was set apart for the Lord. But it's frowned upon in Paul's letters.

Are these "binding" rules, or cultural preferences? Sounds like the latter to me.

What has hair length to do with angels?
*****

interesting how detailed several scriptures are on womens hair length and yet self professing christianity prefers to remain ignorant of Truth from Gods Holy Word and Apostles chosen by Christ ....choosing instead to follow worlds ways and mortal men who discredit Apostles dismiss and ignore Holy Word of God to follow another Christ 2Corin 11:4

1Tim 2:9-10, I Peter 3:3-6

1Corin 11:2-16 (womens hair is a covering ...a SHAME for women to have short hair)

a covering for what?

1Corin 11:7-10 ..."because of the angels" when a woman "uncovers" her head, she loses angelic protection
---Rhonda on 9/22/09

antichrist to Word of God as the very man you claim writing silly letters meant for nobody states Apostles were entrusted by God to preserve the Word of Christ 1Thess 2:4 "But as we (apostles) were allowed of God to be put in trust with the gospel, even so we speak, not as pleasing men, but God, which tries our hearts"

either one believes EVERY Word from God Psalm 119:160, Rom 3:1-3, Luke 4:4 or they choose slick spin campaigns of words by mortal men who DISMISS IGNORE and DISCREDIT much of Gods Word so they can continue to serve themselves bringing MANY to destruction one small lie leaves the gate wide open for more

Cathrine,

I doubt very much that your words are Gods since they do not reflect the truth.
Please provide scriptural evidence of the nature you describe!

Mal 3:2
But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he [is] like a refiner's fire, and like fullers' soap:

Mal 3:6
For I [am] the LORD, I change not, therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.

His word will never be removed
---Carla3939 on 9/22/09

Ronda, Paul's writing are letters. They were not originally written to be published. Paul is simply trying to communicate to the Church in Corinth to respond to a number of issues going on in the "Christian Community" there. The letter was addressed to just them not the whole world. Paul received a letter or was told orally of a problem by someone and Paul thought it was important enough to include the subject in a letter he was sending to the Christian Community in Corinth. You are only getting one side of the communication. We don't know what was in the was nature of the text of the conservation to which Paul is responding. Sometimes scripture has general applicability and at other times it is for specific group at a specific time.
---The_Friendly_Blogger on 9/22/09

Oh for goodness sakes. Now, a days God does not care how a woman wears her hair. How many really knows God, understands God, HOW MANY, even wants to.
---catherine on 9/22/09

Trish, you said: "We are not under the Law, but Grace. Wear your hair whatever length you like."
I couldn't agree more!!!! Thank you for pointing out that very important fact.
If we are bound by one law - we are bound by all the laws - Jesus fulfilled the law - therefore there is grace ,-)

Paul wanted the Christian women to be differentiated from the short haired prostitutes. It does not apply to any one else especially in current times
****

silly Paul he left that part out ...by this reasoning Bible is just documented in writing as entertainment for future christian generations ...watering down Gods Word to nothing but a collection of cute stories WRITTEN over 2000 years ago NOTHING applies in todays modern more knowledgeable intellectual generation ...follow slick reasoning of MORTAL men turning back on God The Word of Truth - and all HIS old useless stuff

Bible is written word of God True Christians LIVE by every word of God Luke 4:4 ...lip service christians have buffet style Bible Matt 15:8-9, 7:23

Friendly Blogger-- You gave an interesting historical insight! It could explain a lot.

Rhonda -- How do women who deliberately cut their hair short, loose protection from angels? What has hair length to do with angels?
---Donna66 on 9/21/09

This reference is specifically address to only the women of Corinth in the first century, Corinth was major port town with sailors from all over the world. One of the major businesses was prostitution. Paul wanted the Christian women to be differentiated from the short haired prostitutes. It does not apply to any one else especially in current times.
---The_Friendly_Blogger on 9/21/09

Jerry,
You didn't touch on the very first words Paul said- Judge among yourselves.
******

IMPLY judging is by an individuals standards which is VOID of God ...DISMISSING the very questions Paul then goes on to ask ...Pauls questions are direct with ONLY one answer from Holy Word of God ...LIE of multiple choice that counterfeit christianity offers by twisting word judge new meaning of carte blanche to make their own decisions to please themselves

True Christians JUDGE by TRUTH - ONE TRUTH in Gods Word not many ....reasoning of men choose many of "truths"

it is a SHAME for men to have long hair - looking often acting like women ...women who deliberately cut their hair short loose protection from angels

Was Paul under grace when he wrote the following?

1Co 11:13-15 Judge in yourselves: is it comely that a woman pray unto God uncovered? Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him? But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering.

Larry, I taught nature and science for years, and was taught that the female of the animal species were plainer, and had better camouflage to protect her and her young. Just compare the male and female mallards. The male is beautiful and colorful, while the female is plainer and rather homely. She will blend in to her habitat, and the nest will be safer than the male, who will stand out more.
---Trish9863 on 9/15/09

The medical question is embarassingly simplistic and almost silly, but the 1 Corinthians 11:3-15 reference is more problematic.
There was a Jewish tradition of not cutting a boys hair before a certain age and Hannah started a tradition of 7 years.
And tradition suggest the length of Christ's hair probably would have kept him out of Liberty University.
I am not sure what to make of God's creation where the male animal species almost always has the longer hair and more elaborate design (makeup). This is true from Peacocks, ducks, chicken, frogs, lions and other animals. I try to avoid being judgemental on these matters because I just don't know.
---larry on 9/14/09

In Corinthians 11:3-15 He is not talking about the hair on your head,He is talking about keeping your head covered with the truth which is His word

A woman can be bald and as long as she knows the truth,it doresn't matter if her hair is long, short or bald

A woman with a med-cond is diff. Aft a bout with cancer & the treatments afterward does make hair to come out & may not ever grow back all the way.
There sure are Pretty Ladies (like the Activia Lady)that have h-cuts that looks like men's h-cut & looks So Gross. Thats Not Godly. 1st Cor 11 v's 3-15 still should be today, but there are Ladies that think they know more than God just like Eve in the garden.

If you are concerned about hair loss from a medical condition, many women in that situation choose to wear a wig.

As for short hair in general, there are many short styles that emphasize the woman in women. I mean, if a man wore some of the "short" cuts women wear nowadays, he would straigt away be accused of being gay. My point is, there are many short styles for women that DO NOT make them look like they are wearing a men's cut, and I for one find them attractive. And, I do not find long hair on older women attractive either.
---obewan on 9/13/09

I prefer women to wear their hair long. However ...

Because a woman's hair is part of HER body, she alone is "free" to choose how to wear it. Likewise, men are "free" to choose how to wear their hair.

I used to attend a church that had a couple where the husband had LONGER hair than his wife. A strange sight. This couple was part of the church ministry team. Not a very good example for young people, if you ask me.

A person's "heart", not "the length of their hair", is what determines their spirituality.

---Augie on 9/13/09

I think God is not as strict as men but I would not like to test him. If you have a medical condition the short hair could be a sign to you to pray about the condidtion as not to displease God.

Just a thought.

No, but I knew someone who went to a Catholic church and when she cut her hair she was no longer allowed to go there anymore.

Just find an accepting place to go for church.
---amand6348 on 9/13/09

Stef, No. Hair length is irrelevant today.
Those verses are simply stating that just as if a women, at the time of this writing, where to have her head shaved, or her hair cut short, it would have indicated or suggested that either her fidelity had been called into question, or that she had assumed the position of a man in a sexual relationship, which would have been a source of shame for her. (See Num.5:18>Deu.22:5).
So likewise, a women who would attempt to prophesy or teach with her "head uncovered", should be a source of shame for her, in Christ. The cover of a woman's head is her faithful devotion to and under the headship of one man, whether a husband, if married, or a father if unmarried. (Examples: Luke 2:36>Acts 21:9).
---joseph on 9/13/09

We are spirit creations (new creation) that are spiritually INside Jesus's body (there is no gender as a spirit).

Galatians 3:28
"there is neither male nor female".

The old rules (ordinances) for worship/devotion do not apply to us, we are neither gender spiritually.

Ephesians 2:15
"abolishing in His flesh the law of commandments and ordinances".
---more_excellent_way on 9/12/09

The women's long hair issue is strictly a European cultural issue. In some parts of the world people's hair is quite kinky and if it grows out it doesn't fall to the shoulders but rather gets to be like a big bush. Would you require that of those women? So hair length shouldn't be an issue at all.
