I love all of Rosalie's math calculations. So when scripture says that Jesus was about 30 years old when he began his ministry, I guess that really means he was about 40. Interesting.
---mugwump on 9/21/09

Jesus was born Oct.2, 7 BC and crucified April 1, 33 AD. 7+33+1=41 This is based on Hebrew calendar to Gregorian Calendar. Remember we have to add 1 bec. there is no zero from new to old testament. Approximately 40years and six months. What does 40 means from the Scripture? It means testing and 6 means work.

larry,
Can you support your statement?

markw,
The time frame when Jesus was baptized and changing water into wine is minimal if not a few days apart. Some will not agree on this.
I find Jesus was baptized in AD26.
His approximate ministry time fits -from AD26 to AD30-his death. Dates are approximate.
My KJV states AD30 as Jesus' date of death.
I agree with it.
From BC7 to AD30 is approximately 36 yrs. of age.
Because of the star conjunction Jesus' age is older than previous historians have established.

Markw,
7BC to AD23 is 29 years.

Hi Earl
Did you take into account that Herod the Great died in 4BC? Also, Herod found out from the Magi that the star first appeared 2years from the time they entered Jerusalem. When the star first appeared is when Jesus was born. I do agree with you that the star first appeared in 7BC. If the star first appeared in 7BC Jesus would be 30 years old in 23AD. Luke3 definitely says Jesus was 30 when he started his ministry but it was not when he was baptized. He started his ministry when he changed the water to wine. He was baptized in 30AD in the 15th year of Tiberius. The Bible always records the next king to rule when the last king dies.

To know what the Magi saw we have to know what time of year Jesus was born. The most common thinking is Dec25. He was actually born in Sept-Oct when the feast of tabernacles was taking place. Zechariah(John the Baptist father) was a priest with the division of Abijah. The Abijah division was the 8th division to go into the temple(1Chronicles24). The Jewish people started their year in March-April. Zechariah was on duty in July. After Zechariah did his temple duties he had relations with his wife and 9 months later John the Baptist was born March-April. 6 months later Jesus was born Sept-Oct. The star the Magi saw should be visible in the sky around Sept-Oct 7BC.

Thanks Earl, let me give you the broadcast version.

Jesus was about 33.

Markw,
Lu.3.1 -15th.year of Tiberias' reign is AD26. Agustus died in 14AD and Tiberias co emporered for about 2 1/2 yrs before Agustus' death with coins struck in his name.Tiberias began in sometime in AD 11 alongside his father.History records Tiberias as beginning in AD13 but the coins tell the real story for this makes him (equal) with his father and all Romans and Jews knew it.
Luke says Jesus was about 30 yrs old in the 15 th .yr of Tiberias so then it will be AD26 and not 2 1/2 yrs.later.Bible footnotes here indicate also c.AD26 when Jesus was about 30 yrs.old .
Star conjunction is also a factor in age.
---earl on 9/17/09

Markw,
Star conjunction is also factored in here. The three travelers that recognized the star's signifiance mounted up for a long trip.
Science dates the star conjunction at an early date of it's first appearance in BC7.
In Matthew,if read correctly, the star is known to reappear close to their final destination. This indicates an illuminating conjunction.
Bible dictionary says the 15 th.yr. of Tiberias is AD29.If this was so Jesus only has abt. 1 yr. before his death at Ad.30.
It is commonly known Jesus was active with his apostles for at least 3 1/2 yrs.

Hi Earl
I'm curious as to how you come up with your timeline for Jesus being 36. Tiberius ended his co-reign with Augustus in 6BC.

---markw on 9/16/09

Has anyone considered 'star conjunction'.Where as the bethlehem star appeared and re appeared .The three travelers had to have seen it weeks to months before and they again seen it when they reached their destination.
And remember that there was a co emperiorship of Tiberias Ceaser and Agustus Ceaser for about two and one half years because there was coins struck in Tiberias' name.
This will place Jesus in my timeline at thirty six when he was killed.

John 2 says that Jesus changed water into wine at a wedding in Cana. This was his first miracle. Shortly after this event Jesus went to the Passover. He says in verse19 "destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days." The Jews reply "it has taken 46 years to build this temple"... Herod the Great in his 18th year restored/rebuilt the temple. His 18th year was 23BC. 46 years from 23BC is 23AD. In 23AD Jesus was 30 years old. He started his ministry when he was 30. He was born in 7BC.
Herod the Great died in 4BC.

Luke 3 says that John the Baptist baptized Jesus in the 15th year of Tiberius Caesar. His 15th year is 30AD.......
---markw on 9/14/09

.....Shortly after John the Baptist was beheaded, Jesus fed the 5 thousand. After this event, the book of John, gives a timeline of Jewish feasts. This timeline lasts for 3 years. Jesus died on the cross in 33AD.

Jesus born 7BC
Jesus started ministry 23AD
Jesus baptized 30AD
Jesus died 33AD

Jesus was 40 years old when he died on the cross. 40 is a very significant number in the Bible. Jesus spent 40 days in the wilderness after his baptism. He spent 40 days with the disciples after he rose from the dead. Moses spent 40 years in the desert. There are many more 40day/year periods in the Bible. I only mentioned a few.

\\ well,if you believe who he said he was, than he was much older than 33
---tom2 on 9/13/09\\

I think the question was related to His Incarnation and earthly sojourn.

Of course, in His divine eternal nature, He's ageless, because the very word "eternity" means "outside of time".

When Jesus began His public ministry, he was "about thirty years of age," according to Luke 3:23.

The most generally accepted chronolgy of His ministry has it lasting about three years.

There are those who say it was only one or two years.

But that's how the "33 years" was reached.
---Cluny on 9/13/09

I have no idea. Will anyone ever truly know?
---amand6348 on 9/13/09

Luke 3:23 says Jesus was "about thirty years old" at his baptism.
