Leon, I cannot guess what she was thinking by looking back. Their times were different, their living was different, what they were going to lose was different, (here is speculating) whether she had some gold hidden someplace and didn't want to lose it, or whether she had a lover in Sodom and hated to see him die, I really don't have any idea why she looked back. Just not possible to know. Could be she left the water running in the bathroom and wanted to go back and shut it off. Wow, it could mean many things. I think she just looked back and forgot what the command was.
---MarkV. on 11/24/09

Peachy MarkV. But, you said nothing about Lot's wife looking/turning (perhaps even going) back. Why not? :)
---Leon on 11/24/09

Leon, first I believe (just speculating) Lot had other daughters beside the two that lived with him. The others I feel were married which clears things about the sons in law mentioned. Lot warned them to leave the town. But when he was with his wife and two daughters the angels took them outside of the town. They didn't take their other daughters and sons out, and no mention is made what happen to them.
Lot was reluctant on leaving and tried to negotiate a way to stay and the reason the angels personally and forcefully escorted him and his family beyond the city's precincts. Then Lot wanted to go to another town and not the mountains v. 21 tells us that the angels could not do anything until Lot were there.
---MarkV. on 11/23/09

MarkV: Since we weren't there we can 1.) speculate our opinions as to what happened or 2.) we can participate by actively listening to & hearing what God says in the Bible. It tells us a "lot" (pun intended) if we'll only pay attention to what's being said. :)

Fact, Lot was a wealthy man -- had cattle & herdsmen (G13:7). Fact, he had a wife, at least two daughters, at least two sons in law (married to his stay at home daughters or "OTHER DAUGHTERS"). Fact, the Bible says Lot had "SONS" (biological sons & /or grandsons--G19:12,14) living in the city.

How hard would it have been for you not to look/turn (go) back after leaving family & possessions in Sodom?

Leon, if anyone gives an answer as to why she turned and looked back, it would only be speculation. No one knows why she turned back, and I believe God didn't want us to know or else He would have mentioned it. What He wanted us to know is God's punishment can come differently to some then with others. Why a pillar of salt and not just blinded her, or burned her to death? I suppose that God did not see fit to tell us about all the others individual's who disobeyed His Word. So many have and they were never turned to a pillar of salt. Sometimes the context gives us clues to the conditions and emotions of those who are mentioned but not in this one.

MarkV: Aaaa -- I hear you! But, (AGAIN) this blog is about WHY did Mrs. Lot look/turn back to Sodom.

Maybe you would want to start a new blog study on OT saints (saved) & aints (unsaved)? Then we (you, me, Trav, etc.) can flesh out (grill) the Bible facts (strong meat) regarding the salvation of OT Hebrews, etc. Brethren, let us drink "new wine" together as we receive the word & allow it to do what God has sent it to do. :)

"A more puzzling question... Donna66, 11/20

Good questions Donna. Perhaps we can deal with them on a new blog? Thanks. :)
---Leon on 11/21/09

A more puzzling question might be to explain what happened to Lot and his daughters after their escape.
Lot was somehow afraid to live on Zoar (do we know why?) so he dwelt in a cave with his daughters. The daughters deceived him and we read:
Gen 19:36 Thus were both the daughters of Lot with child by their father.

Was it THAT important to preserve the lineage of Lot? Couldn't he have found a wife somewhere?
---Donna66 on 11/20/09

Leon, you are so right. We just read and do not realize their emotions and feelings at the time. One thing I found out early enough in my Christian life was that the Bible talks little of those who were saved in the Old Testament. When God gave them commands, it was do or die. Even if they did what God said, they were forced to do them. And no where does it say because they did do them they went to heaven, since you break one you break them all. When thousands died in the desert, it just says they died. It says nothing if any of them were saved or not. The only times it mentions those who are saved is when God wants to mention it, like David, and Abraham and so on. It speaks about their love for God.

cluny -**BTW, in some Semitic langauges, "becoming salt" is an idiom for having a heart attack (I have been told).

Probably correct!

I question if she turned into a block of sodium chloride but merely went into a state of shock causing her heart to stop.

There is always a danger of taking everything in the Bible literally. Such often results in superstition, one being that we eat our God when we drink consecrated wine & bread.

Disobedience. Just like Eve in the Garden of Eden, her being disobedient to what God said, she partook of the forbidden fruit then gave to Adam.

Leon good question for Trav, two daughters married and virgins? But when Trav answers he answers in a manner that only he understands.
---Bobby1 on 11/16/09

I agree and thanks Bobby1. Rarely a sheep to find.
Put ole travelosity in his place. I told Leon he seen what I missed. Perhaps he didn't note the son in laws? Don't remember. Did these son in laws consumate? Were there other daughters?
Perhaps we learned something. So throw another steak on the grill and crack a bottle of wine. We're in your house now.
Psalm 60:3
Thou hast shewed thy people hard things: thou hast made us to drink the wine of astonishment.
---Trav on 11/18/09

MarkV: Thanks for your input. :) However, the focus of this blog isn't on the woman's dire consequences for disobeying instructions from the angels of the Lord. I'm curious as to "WHY" she chose to disobey & I believe the Genesis account provides significant clues (nuggets of wisdom), that should not be "overlooked" in this regard.

I often think, in talking to other people (even Christians), we tend to see people in the Bible as just people in the Bible, & we don't see them as being just like us with strong emotions & impulses to do right or wrong.

Leon, here is my take on the wife looking back. The reason for her punishment was the price that was paid for disregarding the angelic warning to flee without a backward glance. In so doing, she became not only encased in salt, but a poignant example of disobedience producing unwanted reaction at judgment day (Luke 17:29-32) even as her home cities became by-words of God's Judgment (Isa.1:9, Rom. 9:29, 2 Peter 2:5,6).
In many cases disobedience meant death. They were under obedience of the law. We are blessed we are not under the law, for no one is completely obedient.

Michael: Do we know for certain the Marriage Traditions of Joseph & Mary's day existed in Abraham & Lot's day? As close as I could get to what you're saying is what appears to be a verbal marriage agreement between Laban & his nephew Jacob (Abraham's grandson) to wed Laban's daughter Rachael. (G29:16-28) Does Scripture imply, at the time of their agreement, whether or not Rachael & Jacob were considered husband & wife even though they didn't consumate their marriage until 14 years later?

If what you say is true, Lot may've had just "two" daughters & I'm only left with the G19:12 "SONS" issue. :) Mama Lot may've still turned back for reasons very near & dear to her heart, i.e., her SONS.
---Leon on 11/18/09

Because when she looked back, she looked at what she was leaving behind. A person can't look back behind their shoulder and have their eyes on God at the same time. God said Chose ye this day in whom you shall serve. When Lot's wife looked back, she took her eyes of off God and made her choice.

Leon, the relationships are the certainties/establishment around them in Sodom. Their lifes before that incident was well defined. They have a way of living that was OK for them. How to eat, trade, servants, who to contact for one thing or the other, those buying milk or cows/rams/goats from them. those that respect & honour them, those who they help & share with, sources of water, etc. They do not have to wrack their brains then about how to live. You may compare this with leaving for the mountains (a very uncertain situation).

Leon good question for Trav, two daughters married and virgins? But when Trav answers he answers in a manner that only he understands.
---Bobby1 on 11/16/09

Did Lot's wife have a heart attack and continued standing as a pillar? The bible specifically said she became a pillar of salt. There is a difference between "turning to salt" and "became a pillar of salt." It's very difficult to have a pillar of a heart attack.

Concerning the reason she looked back. Complete conjecture like many of you do with other verses of scripture.
---Steveng on 11/16/09

The answer to the question about Lot's daughters is simple if you understand Middle Eastern marriage traditions. Remember Joseph of Nazareth? He was pledged to Mary, but did not "know" her before she became pregnant with Jesus. The NAB reads 19:14 "Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who were to marry his daughters," The NIV renders it "pledged to marry his daughters". Once engaged, the man becomes the son-in-law as he is committed to the marriage at that point. Hence, the daughters were virgins as they would not "know" their husbands until the final ceremony was concluded.

---JackB on 11/16/09

Are you saying Lot's married daughters were virgins living under his roof because their husbands had no inclination to "know" them? Why then were they married?
---Leon on 11/16/09

No, you are right about the two not knowing men. I disconnected, on the son-inlaws. Reading again, the daughters read to be the same virgins offered. Still dummy's.
There must have been other daughters.
Son-in laws/plural had to have married daughters of Lot. Assume they consumated. They all perished irregardless. Given over to the life style one would assume.
---Trav on 11/16/09

Trav: Lot said (G19:8) he had two daughters living in his house who, "have not known man." Does that mean they were or were not virgins?

G19:12 "clearly" makes a distinction between son in law & SONS, & daughters. It seems Lot may've had, not only sons in law (G19:14), but also SONS, & other daughters (married to perhaps bisexual men). If that's the case, it's quite possible the Lots may've also had grandchildren.

Are you saying Lot's married daughters were virgins living under his roof because their husbands had no inclination to "know" them? Why then were they married?
---Leon on 11/16/09

Anybody: Besides the two "virgin" daughters that left with Lot & Mrs. Lot, did the Lots have any other children ("married" daughters or sons) Leon on 11/15/09

Not clear. Angels mention Sons but, none leave. Daughters may have been the ones with husbands? Not Virgins. Just ignorant.

20.Genesis 19:12
And the men said unto Lot, Hast thou here any besides? son in law, and thy sons, and thy daughters, and whatsoever thou hast in the city, bring them out of this place:
21.Genesis 19:14
And Lot went out, and spake unto his sons in law, which married his daughters, and said, Up, get you out of this place, for the LORD will destroy this city. But he seemed as one that mocked unto his sons in law.

---Leon on 11/15/09

Adetunii: What "relationships" do you think Mrs. Lot may've been heartbroken over leaving behind? :)
---Leon on 11/6/09

I think it was because her heart held dear(attached to) the things & relationships that they were living behind than the WORD of God that she had been given. This is a warning to all of us as well. There is nothing we can boast of having on the earth today that cannot disappear tomorrow. May we continuously surrender to God's instructions(especially when it changes). Lot's wife action is similar to those of the Israelites that wanted to return to Egypt from the wilderness.

---catherine on 11/3/09

AMEN..

Remember when Moses delivered Israel out of egypt. They whined and complained and wanted to go back...THAT generation DIED in their sin in the wilderness.

Others settled in the land, and were told in the end....don't go back or look back to Egypt.

Paul said in Phil 3...forgetting those thingd behind...press on to what is before...WE look UP..not down and around.

The end of Phil 3 say those who mind earthly things...worldliness are enemies of the Cross!

How many children did the Lot's have? :) (G19:8-17)
---Leon on 11/4/09

She lusted for the life she had and looked back in hopes it would be saved. That is where her heart was. You should know that Lot and his wife wanted to live in that city knowing in advance what it was. (i.e. Moving to Las Vegas) They were not holy. They continue to raise their daughters there. It was Abraham's (his Uncle) prayer for them, that save them.

Jesus explains it in Luke 17:32-33

32 "Remember Lot's wife.
33 "Whoever seeks to keep his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life will preserve it"

Hope this helps.

Why did Lot's wife look back?
The same reason many so-called Christians "look back". They miss the old life style and the carnal pleasure of their sins, knowing they are doing what is displeasing to God, their flesh desires the pleasures of this world, yet, their spirit desires the things of God. It is a warfare that will continue as long as we live in this world. Many may have been convicted of their sin but not truly converted.
This is why Romans 12:1-3 was written.

"What man is in Heaven right now because he has followed Gods laws good enough as a lost man or a believer?

This is the "other" gospel spoken of in Galatians."
---Jack_B on 11/2/09
Really? The "other" gospel had nothing to do with the works of the flesh spoken of in Gal 5:19-21. Oh and whomever does those, Paul said "shall not inherit the kingdom of God". We are encouraged to follow to completion all manner of endeavor through the fruit of the Spirit, Gal 5:22,23.
Matt 25:46: "And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal."
Apparently, some will be found "good enough" and some not. Is that another gospel?
---Nana on 11/3/09

she didn't obey

for same reasons nobody obeyed God and believed Noe ...Noe and his family were saved during the flood ...Noe preached for 100 years while his family built the ark and everyone laughed and mocked him and carried on in their evil ways

the pattern will play out again during the end of age ...little flock of Christ the few will be found worthy to escape all the destruction VAST MAJORITY will not
---Rhonda on 11/2/09

Beware of those in sheeps clothing but inwardly they are ravening wolves!

Some 'christians' just cant wait to say someone else is condemned for their actions. Doest Satan do enough of this as the 'accuser of the brethren'?

Are Moses and David (both murderers) currently in the pit of hell because they did those things which were against the will of God?

They were also saved by the faith and trust they put in the mercy of God as their Savior. They followed his direction even after they sinned because they knew 'his grace was sufficient'.

What man is in Heaven right now because he has followed Gods laws good enough as a lost man or a believer?

This is the "other" gospel spoken of in Galatians.

\\Here is an interesting question. Does genesis 19:26," But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt". Mean that Lot's wife went to hell?
---mima on 11/2/09\\

No, it doesn't, mima.

I've already posted that, from what I've been told, "to turn to salt" is a Semitic idiom for "to have a heart attack."

Neither whether Mrs. Lot actually had a heart attack, or her eternal fate, interests me, so no, it's not an interesting question.

No doubt she is lost. It's the same here, Luke 9 v 62.

No Mima! As usual, you're seeking opinions. The Bible doesn't say where Mrs. Lot's eternal destination is though she obviously died after looking back.

The so called glitter & glamor of worldly pleasures in sin, & she hesitated to leave with her family.

I believe it would be the same when the rapture takes place. When the vast #'s of those that called at once, if there be any to look back, they'd be dropped back down to earth to enjoy where their heart is & then to suffer the consequences.

If your Truly born again, your eyes are to be on the things above & Not of this world.
---Lawrence on 11/2/09

One reason she turned back to Sodom is the fact that se doubted the seriousness of God's warning.
Another reason is that she though one more look back would seal the many souvenirs she had made/experienced while living in he city.
