Here's the way I look at it. If one is willing to go all out and dress their best for a party or a nightclub, then they should give God their best when they attend services. To do any different would be disrespectful.

Christ CONDEMNED Pharisees doctrines, traditions.

Is the GRACE AGE, doing the same as the Pharisees?

Christ lip's regarding Pharisees:

Matthew 23:3
...all things therefore whatever they tell you, do and keep: but do not after their :works, for they say, AND DO NOT.

Grace age, agrees Ten Commandments should not broken.

Umm adultery in the church is as in the world.

Let's break Sabbath commandment we are spiritual.

Commandment means optional. Break more.

Let's be the likeness of a lawless Christ, and not the One with the mindset and manners of The Torah.

Do not eat pig, well, this is optional.

Is It any wonder that judgment begins in the House of God? 1 Peter 4:17

....smelling sauce....

---Eloy on 11/24/09

Now that's a term I haven't heard before, but it certainly fits.. Thank you Eloy for one of today's smile.

But much has changed in my lifetime. I remember when all the men traveling by airplane all were ties. The young people in the days of the flower children broke this custom.
---mima on 11/25/09

Those were the days before they crammed you into an airplane, you got to sit on runways for hours at a time without being allowed to stand or stretch or use the bathroom.

Give me a pair of jeans and a casual shirt for air travel anyday!
---NurseRobert on 12/1/09

God created us naked.

We are concerned about our outward appearance because of the shame of our sin.
---JackB on 11/30/09

"...the Lord sees not as man sees for man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart." 1 Samuel 16:7

Appearances make a loud statement.Says a lot about oneself. A man or woman who does not care how they look usually have low self-esteem. If they think lowly of themselves ,they usually, don't respect themselves, or anyone else.
There is a certain way to dress when one is going to church. Most of all be neat and clean and do dress modestly. We would not wear a wedding dress to the beach. So, we should not dress as if we are going to a bar or club, to the house of God. The bible also says to be moderate in all things and that includes our dress and appearance.
---Robyn on 11/28/09

Interesting how people show their prejucide and dress it up as facts. Over 70% of the attqacks were on women for dressing wrongly, and very few mentioned men.
The fact remains, the most disgusting sight I ever saw in church, were two young men, eakry 20's, sitting on the stage, dressed as a slobs. Sadly, they were also the worship team, which says alot about the church.

Thanks for the humor! You cracked me up :o)
We all knew what Mima was saying.

To all of us: shouldn't charity (love one towards another) avail much?
---trey on 11/28/09

I don't think that God really cares what anyone, man or woman, wears to church. As long as they are wearing some clothing that covers their "private parts". Quiz time! What are a person's "private parts"?

If people want to be concerned, obsessed, etc. about:

* their appearance
* how they stack up against other people
* whether their clothes are "in style"
* anything else?

Well, that is their own thing to worry about. God is more concerned about the condition of the person's heart for HIM.

I think that this blog has degenerated into a silly argument. I've gotten some good laughs from reading the posts. Reminds me of when I was a kid arguing with my friends.

---Sag on 11/28/09

Get over yourselves! It's strange how a bunch of men can attack a woman on this site when she tries to add a little humor to it. You men keep arguing amongst yourselves. Notice how many women have stopped posting because of your silliness???

---KarenD please accept my apology for offending your ears and eyes by spelling the word wear as were.

It was not my intention to imply that it was Christian man wore ties but rather all Men traveling on airplanes 50 years ago wore ties. Again let me apologize to you, you perfection is much needed.
---mima on 11/26/09

Karen, I think it is foolish for a person to try to correct an author in his own authorship. Again, I intentionally and purposely and deliberately use "smelling sauce" as a term for fragrance, perfume and cologne, and I have not written "smelling sauce" incorrectly nor mistakenly, and I will also continue to correctly use "smelling sauce" liberally when I communicate this topic in the future inspite of people whom do not have adequate comprehension of common colloquialisms. Now if you want to incorrectly use "salts" to mean a perfume or cologne, then that is your own usage, but I will never use that word when refering to a sweet fragrance, for that makes no sense.
---Eloy on 11/26/09

In any situation, formal or casual, act your best, be your best, and dress your best. First impressions set the stage for how one will be identified from that point forward. Carnal man will always judge by appearances, those that are lost seek first for that which they think represents the good life. Representatives of Christ, therefore, at all times, should present themselves in the best light possible. This of course starts within, but should also be manifest through an external reflection of the beauty that lies within. Would any of you, "Christian" or "secular", invited to the white house to personally and formally meet with the president, dress in anything less than your best? Does our Father deserve anything less?
---joseph on 11/26/09

Mima was making the point that indeed these rules are man made, and they change. In Jesus time, men did not wear pants, and many Scotsmen still don't ... their kilt looks like a skirt.

Now, about Eloy's use of sauce ... that's quite possible ... words develop in different ways in different places, and it could well be the term used in his parts.
---alan8566_of_uk on 11/26/09

Pretty pathetic when someone isn't willing to admit they made a simple mistake. Nobody I know refers to "smelling salts" as "smelling sauce", but I know a lot of cooks that have "smelling sauce" of one kind or another like sweet-smelling or sour-smelling.

"....I remember when all the men traveling by airplane all were ties. The young people in the days of the flower children broke this custom." ---mima on 11/25/09

Mima...How is it that men "were ties" when they traveled by airplane? Did they turn into ties as soon as they boarded or after the plan took off? Why would a man need to wear a tie to fly anywhere? These dress rules are man-made, not God-made.

"rather let it be the hidden person of the heart,
with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit,
which is very precious in the sight of God." (1 Peter 3:4)

So, instead of getting obsessed about ones who are obsessed with outer appearance, I need to be concerned about how I appear to God.

But do we go stinky and messy? Well, in 1 Corinthians 9:19-23, Paul shares, "I have become all things to all men, that I might save some." So, I'd say Paul our example would dress in a way not to try to make himself look like he was more than ones he wanted to reach and share with.
---Bill_bila5659 on 11/25/09

cluny, I purposely use the term "smelling sauce", my correct spelling, as common lingo for fragrance, perfume and cologne, which is applied to the body after washing.
---Eloy on 11/25/09

Although it was titled that way, your actual question doesn't actually ask about dressing for church. Could you please further clarify what it is you'd like to discuss? Are you talking about concern for physical appearance? Social appearances? Appearing to be religious or spiritual? Or what?

Tough to answer without knowing what it is that you're really asking. ,)
---AlwaysOn on 11/25/09

Dress can be used as a unifying factor,(all the girls wear white blouses and black skirts and all the boys wear white shirts and black trousers) or those who can afford to overdress do so in order to make a statement.

But much has changed in my lifetime. I remember when all the men traveling by airplane all were ties. The young people in the days of the flower children broke this custom.

I believe with some people it is Vanity, with some others it is because they want to be accepted, and then with the rest, they just want to look their best because thats how they were rised. You just do what is most comfortable for you as long as your decently clothed.

\\smelling sauce,\\

Smelling salts (note the proper spelling) was carried to help people (usually women) revive from a faint.

Or are you trying to say cologne or perfume?

\\Ladies wearing mens clothes(slacks, no matter if fastened in the front -side or the back, still pertains to men clothes)\\

In some cultures, trousers are traditionally WOMEN'S attire.

Euro-American cultural practices, especially regarding dress, were NOT delivered on tablets of stone from Sinai.

Soap, clean clothes, smelling sauce, and combs and mirrors are made for a reason: or would you rather that everyone look dirty and shabby?
---Eloy on 11/24/09

When I see people come out from an trin-church they are No diff than regular people I see goin through town, both dressed like the world.
