Is Unbathed Rebellion

My mom hasn't bathed in years and rarely washes. I asked her why she doesn't bath and she comes up with every excuse not to. I said just say you don't want to. She said I don't want to. Her siblings said she was extremely stubbron as a child. Is it rebellion?

She is unique. So her reason may not have a category.

In some cases, yes.

It didn't occur to me that your mother's refusal to bathe could well be a symptom of depression.

I've known people that came to America from Africa who had not yet developed the habit of bathing. They grew up in a hut in a small village and almost ALL of the water from the village well was used for cooking, drinking and irrigation of the crops, so if you used any of the water for washing, you had better have a VERY good excuse to give to the village residents.

Most likely, your mothers' excuse for not bathing is a psychological one rather than 'childhood habits'. Did a loved one drown when your mother first stopped bathing (you say "in years")?. Did she grow up on a farm and get yelled at for using water that the crops needed?.

I'm afraid that's typical of mental illness, not rebellion. My aunt suffers from severe depression--and a horrendous desire to be in filth, not bathing or cleaning herself. She needs professional help, dear. It can help. God bless you and your mother.

This could be from depression. Depressed people sometimes don't realize exactly what is going on because they are so deep in the depression. Days run together and they are drained by depression of strength of body and soul because they are so deeply lost within themselves and the pain they are going through. Another cause could be because she doesn't have a life which requires anything of her. She could have lost interest in taking care of herself because she isn't involved with other people and the outside world much. There could be many reasons why she doesn't bath and rebellion would be the last thing I would look at. Take her to a doctor for a checkup and tell him about this.

You've not said how old your mother is.

I know in the last few years of my father's life, he got stubborn about bathing and his appearance. It's not for nothing that a certain stage of life is called second childhood.

There was a time that people didn't bathe nearly as frequently as today.

hi Mary,...in response to your question about your mother bathing,...it is not a sin not to bathe...she might be smelly but only god knows the heart, however having said that if your mother had a close relationship with jesus, i'm sure He would encourage her to wash, just for hygiene's sake and to be a witness to others.

Maybe your Mom is depressed, and just really don't care anymore. Does she get new clothes, or get to go out anymore? maybe its an age thing. Does she live alone? There could be a lot going on in her mind and heart.

This sounds like one of those rare cases of psychosomatic rabies aka hydro phobia.
