Even this silence fulfilled Scripture, as we read in Isaiah 53:7.

//He was born to die as a Sacrificial Lamb of GOD. He was not going to open His Mouth to defend Himself from being crucified. He came to be crucified.//

silence of the Lamb.

ADDITIONAL COMMENT: The main reason for YAHUSHUA"s (JESUS') silence was for the fact that He was born to die as a Sacrificial Lamb of GOD. He was not going to open His Mouth to defend Himself from being crucified. He came to be crucified.
---Gordon on 9/17/10

JESUS (YAHUSHUA) was silent for the Scriptures prophecied that when the Lamb of GOD would come to Earth, the first time, to be the Blood Atonement, He would "not open His Mouth". Just as sheep are dumb before their shearers, so would the innocent Lamb of GOD be "dumb" or silent before His "shearers", the false accusers. I personally believe it is also, in part, because He said openly everthing He was to say during His three year Ministry. He spoke openly before everyone, including those who were accusing Him. He needed not defend Himself. His Words and Deeds spoke for themselves.

Two witnesses.

Bill, this was a very good question. I read what everyone posted and everyone seems to have a good answer. I have to agree with Shawn's answer as the reason Jesus did not say anything. Protesting would only proof that He wanted to be excuse of the crime they put on Him. He knew already what He was sent for. He always obedyed the Father. Shawn said,

I believe Jesus was silent because no man is capable of debating with the Lord. Had he not been silent they would not have acted. His capacity for speaking passed all human understanding and would turn the most ardent opinion upside down, inside out.

The Word was sent to save-those on the wrong path-those that are lost.
Luke 19:10,Matt 18:11

God sent His Word in Flesh-Jn 1:1-15
If you know Gods' Word spoken through the Prophets-you will know the Word in Flesh-Christ.
If you believe what He said-you believe Him.
Jn6:43-71

'He who hath seen me, hath seen the Father'
Jn 14,15,16,17

The Key word here is 'Seen'

Please do not go so hard at each other.Allow me please to state my observation of the events surrounding the Lord's life while in the physical body. It appears tome that His entire life was subject to temptations for the purpose of not giving into them, and that to one end and one end only,- that He would conquer all hell and put it under His control, as well as in order.
I believe that He did not speak a word because to do that would mean to bring oneself to the same level, thus give in to a temptation. It is the same with our modern heroes, which go on the quest to fight evil to save others from it, thou in the process of fighting they become the very same evil they tried to destroy. Lord in His wisdom would not succumb to that. God Bless.

there were 351 prophecies about jesus in the old testament,he full filled all of them, being silent was one of them.

ok John since you want to pick on people you picked on the wrong chicken, your accusations and mean attitude is going to earn you a chastisement Go get him Jesus and wear him out, till he cant sit down for a week or until he learns how to be humble and to apologize, im sure this is how you treat those in your family and in your church that is if you attend one. You are a very rude and power controlling man which is not of God. I pray that you learn to be obedience for it is better than sacrifice, and the first steps to Wisdom is to fear God......now go look these scriptures up in the Bible.

Were you speaking to me or to Jesus Christ. Its sounds like you copied something directly from what the pharissees said to Jesus.

Sorry I don't follow your "I'm okay, You're Okay Liberal religion. Like Paul I'm NOT "Politically Correct". Nor do I tolorate Willful Ignorance from those who are too lazy and worldly to study the word.

I simply quoted scripture, so what sin are you accussing me of?

Enjoy your Potluck!

John:WRONG! WRONG!! WRONG!!!

Sadly its true that Christians are the Most ignorant of scripture. Sadly because they have intelligence so it's willful ignorance based on the "Save by the 1 minute sinners prayer ticket" and "lets eat the Potluck Oxen attitude". Most think the 1st book of the bible is Matthew. The other half is just for those "Legalistic Jews"

I agree with those who recognize that Jesus is the "Lamb slain from the foundation of the world (Rev 13:8)."

YOUR ANSWER...

He was fulfilling prophesy of Isaiah 53:7
"He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth, he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth."
---John on 8/20/10

YOU are right LEE, and believe me God has His ways. God is real big on this here word wait. Does not mean He'll do it all. You just wait for His orders, and just like Moses and others, you follow and you obey, and the battle is won. Yes. If only our nation could get a hold of that one. We could send Satan a packing. Dream on, Catherine. Thank you I will till the day He come and gets me. Hallelujah. Thank You Jesus+

"Why was Jesus silent?" Fulfillment of prophesy Bill.
As it was written: "He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He opened not His mouth, He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, And as a sheep before its shearers is silent, [likewise], He opened not His mouth." Isa 53:7>Psa 38:12-14
"Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again, when he suffered, he threatened not, but committed [himself] to him that judgeth righteously:" 1Pe 2:23
"Therefore let those who suffer according to the will of God commit their souls to Him in doing good, as to a faithful Creator." 1Pe 4:19

just like Jesus how many times have you been accused and tried to defend yourself, i have and this very scripture came to my mind. If i hold my peace and let the lord fight my battles Victory, Victory shall be mine ! Jesus knew this all had to play out in order for us to have eternal salvation, he knew he was the lamb to be slain. His Blood had to spill just like in the OT there had to be a blood offering in the tabernacle it was either a goat or a calf with out spot or blemish. Just like Jesus he was the one time sin offering for you and i,he was "PERFECT" NO SIN WAS FOUND IN HIM !

Hallelujah and Praise his Holy Name !

Because the bible tells us, "You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free."

If Jesus would have spoken, He would have told the truth, and that truth would have set him free and the crucifixation might not have taken place.

Just my measley thoughts....

is this the only verse saying that christ was silent? in other book & verse he rebuked the pharisees, saduccees experts in the law for being a stumbling block?

are we to emulate this? if we are being abused & accused are to sit down & keep silent?

the problem with christianity is you hear one verse & you do not question it, obey it but those who quote it do not practice it. christianity lacks a balanced teaching. it tells you to divorce yourself from the world bec. it is sinful. that is not christianity which is relationship but ascetism.

He answered nothing because there was no occasion. His hour has come, and He submitted, what a God, what a man, to His Father's will. [Speaking of being Christ-like]....Because of Jesus' severe beatings He died within six hours on the cross. Some would languish for several days before they died. Hallelujah. How did humans become so animalistic?
---catherine on 8/20/10

Why would Christ say anything, is arguing with people who all ready have their minds made up going to have done him any good.

There was a preordained sequence of events that needed to happen to achieve the atonement for YHWH's Elect. Any action or statement of Christ part that could potentially alter what needed to happen would be counter productive for YHWH's plan for that day.

Christ showed true meekness. Meekness is disciplined inner strength, the ability to endure all he had to go through that day culminating in his death so YHWH's plan could be carried out completely.
