Wild Dancing Jumping Church

I'm going to be visiting a new church this Sunday. I hear they get wild when they worship, dance, jump up and down and I'm not that type of Christian. Does that make me weird or different than they? Are they more zealous for the Lord than me? I'm a bit scared to go, but was invited. Any advice?

don't be afraid, it is a bunch of people having a good HOLY time, if you feel like to participate join them. if not, then enjoy the show. and atmitted half of it is the flesh but are we not suposed to worship God in Spirit soul and body? hh
---andy3996 on 1/26/11

Being raised pentecostal I have seen it all but quite frankly It isn't how loud you worship God its the sincerity of your heart. I would love to hear the word of God from the preacher so it someone crosses the line and is disorderly I cant hear the word. One example would be someone hitting for floor with their fists (that hysteria) not the spirit.

You can discern the spirits and God spirit can be fire but sometimes it is a soft gentle spirit.

I've seen people jumping and whistling up and down the aisle. I personally can feel when its emotion or the holy ghost.
So you are right and always discern the spirits because not everyone who say the know GOD is an actual christian. hope that helps

Miriam danced with a timbrel.
The lame man sat as Jesus walked by.
He jumped up when healed.
The dead lay in a coffin.
People dance at a wedding.
Just seems rather natural what to do.
Have fun.

\\Well, I'll be honest with you, it sounds like a whole lot of fun. Ask God what to do. But any good church would go out of its way to make you feel at home.
---catherine on 11/7/10\\

Isn't there any church that makes YOU feel at home, catherine, besides your own?
---Cluny on 11/17/10

I believe everyone should worship God according to His Word. The Bible say: rejoice lift up your voice in Praise and song. Yes, read in The old Testment about David, He danced His clothes off praising The Lord. Shout, play instuments, do what the Holy Ghost leads You to do. Worship God and don't worry about what man thinks.
---Flossie on 11/7/10

Donna,
larry has given you excellent advice!
Don't let one woman's life keep you away.
At least she's in church where she needs to be.
Go with an open mind! You're bound to learn something. If we're honest, we are all flawed advertisements for the Christian life in some way.
---Donna66 on 11/8/10

On the day of Penecost Act 2, the people thought all in the upper room where drunk because they were making a big commotion. Were they not loud? David danced before the Lord. Was he not dancing? Why the word even tells us to Leap for joy. In many miracles in the Bible people were jumping, leaping and praising God lifting up holy hands.
---judy6696 on 11/8/10

I would wonder if it isn't the music making some emotional...as some music does or is it worship.
---shira3877 on 11/8/10

Good question Donna. They may not be more zealous but more free to show their joy in the Lord in the "dance" as did David.

There are a couple of things to look for and remember.
You can control over your emotions and action including dancing, shouting and so-called being slain in the spirit.
If the church is focused on Jesus join in the dance, if the service is focused on just the messenger (holy spirit) be very wary.
If we can cheer at a football game we can cheer in church but the true christian is balanced and God is a God of decency and order.
---larry on 11/7/10

Donna, the moment you judged that woman, you fell into the same category by bedding down with the accuser of the brethren. Did Jesus fail to deal with the sin of adultery or divorce at the cross? Remember 70 x 7? I remember a story about an adultress caught in the very act, taken by the religious, cast into the midst, and exposed for her wrongdoing. The best place to be found is in the midst though, for that is where Jesus is. He dealt with those accusers promptly until there was no one left to accuse. To make sure the woman saw this, He asked her where her accusers were. "None, Lord", she answered. "Neither do I condemn thee. Go and sin no more." The power to overcome sin was found in the absence of condemnation.
---Mercy on 11/7/10

Jesus also called her "woman" and restored her to the name God gave the helpmeet to begin with....before Adam in his fallen state renamed her to reflect the separation from God. Religion called her "adultress". Jesus called her "woman" BEFORE He told her to go and sin no more. When Jesus said, "Woman", it was the same creative word God spoke in Genesis and it put His creation back in order.

\\I would say Go. It is no right or wrong way to worship God. \\

The ancient Canaanite fertility cult worshipped God with temple prostitution.

Was this right or wrong?

How about those religions that practice human sacrifice.

Is this right or wrong?
---Cluny on 11/7/10

I would say Go. It is no right or wrong way to worship God. As long as we do it in spirit and in truth. Jesus should be the focus of the service. Be friendly to the other congregants. Just observe, if you like. since you are visiting, no one will think anything of it. Just let the Spirit move you. We don' t move ourselves. The Spirit does. If the spirit moves you to cry, dance, clap whatever..do it! If not. That's ok, too. Just be yourself. I belong to a church that gets wild(lol) I move, jump, sing, clap, most times. Sometimes I just worship God in my heart and mind sitting down. I observe and look at how others worship God. You can feed off of that sometimes. I stand for the reading of the scripture and so on. Be creative.

One never knows how this "sinful woman" was treated in her 2 marriages.
---Mary on 9/20/10

\\Donna, love covers a multitude of sins. Are you covering or exposing?\\

**It is sad that an entire church is judged by the acts of one sinful woman.**

Nobody anywhere in anybody's church lives up 100% to that church's teachings. That includes even the select group on these blogs, believe it or not.

However, what shall it profit a person to dance, whoop, and holler when there is actual heresy (such as denial of Christ's Resurrection) being preached from the pulpit, as I have seen happen?

As to the woman mentioned in my first quote, the number of her marriages and divorces is public record, so there's really nothing to hide, is there?

Donna, love covers a multitude of sins. Are you covering or exposing? Are you obedient or not?
---Becky on 9/20/10

It is sad that an entire church is judged by the acts of one sinful woman. You cannot possibly know what goes on a church that you have never attended.
---KarenD on 9/20/10

The other side to this might be that there are also some folks in less demonstrative churches who are sitting there quiet and not dancing or hollering, but also arent obedient to the Word of God in other ways in their lives, too! It goes back to what expression YOU PREFER. LIBERTY over BONDAGE. Be free to obey and serve God as the Lord leads YOU to. As long as it is in 'spirit and in truth'.
---Lin on 9/20/10

I didn't visit the church, tell you why.

Anyone can dance, jump up and down, shout and hollar and Praise the Lord. I'm okay with that.

BUT...I have a problem with people who do this and then don't follow the Word of God. Let me explain. The woman who invited me just went through her second divorce and is now diligently looking for a man and will marry for a THIRD time. I thought Paul the Apostle said,"If she leaves her husband, she is to remain single." (Romans Ch. 6) I think is where Paul says this.

If one isn't following the word, why jump up and down, shout and hollar? I believe OBEDIENCE to the word is much more important than expression of faith like hollering Praises and dancing, and jumping, etc., Do you?

\\I suppose to some of you our enthusiasm over the living God is silly,\\

Yes, catherine, you've already told us how since you've stopped going to church you preach and dance to the walls.

Have any of them gotten saved yet?
---Cluny on 9/18/10

Catherine like wise as you did when you were jumping up after your idols?

Does that mean God is our idol now so we jump up noisily and carry-on without no respect for ORDER?

Order is something some people think is all about food... rather than a Discplined behaviour. You know what you are doing, theres no need for disorder in church unless it's a private members service, but have some thought for the unsaved they think your are Man as a hattter, and vote with their feet.
---Carla on 9/18/10

'Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is Liberty'. That's what the scripture says! Don't let anyone tell you or make you feel that you aren't really saved or zealous enough in YOUR individual worship just because THEY say you should practice worship as THEY do! Don't let ANYONE put you in BONDAGE to THEIR beliefs. There is 'LIBERTY' in Jesus Christ, to worship and praise as YOU feel to do! The main thing is: to WORSHIP OUR LORD in spirit and in truth!!! God Bless!!
---Lin on 9/18/10

I attend a church that does not believe in quenching the spirit.
You can dance sing praise God give testimony all of the gifts of the Holy Spirit are seen appreciated. BUT, we believe in orderly worship also.

When the teacher is teaching, listen.
When the preacher is preaching, you can give an amen when you agree and clap your hands and such but I have never seen anyone running up and down the isle while these things are going on.

Again, ORDERLY worship. That is what the bible tells us. There is a time and a place for everything.

I suppose to some of you our enthusiasm over the living God is silly, just like when you are jumping up and down all excited over your idols, would be to the born-again believer. [insanity is what that is]....."Let them praise His name in the dance, let them sing praises unto Him with timbrel and harp" [Psa. 149:3] No one tells you have to worship your idols, and no one had better be telling us how to worship the living God..."And David danced before the Lord with all his might" [2 Sam. 6:14], "A time to weep and a time to laugh a time to mourn and a time to dance [Eccl 3:4], Psa. 149:3, Psa. 30:11, Job 21:11], a good one it's about children dancing.
---catherine on 9/18/10

voted with my feet. I wouldn't go back there love.

Be careful where you worship it must match the temple of the living God.
---Carla on 9/17/10

In an ealier blog, I posted how I got physically injured at a service.

The service was going, loud music playing, and the Leader was praying for people. I had the "honor" of being an usher. My job was to "catch" folks after the Leader had prayed for them and they "fell" -- Slain In The Spirit.

Well, I am 5'8" and weigh 170 lbs. I just couldn't catch a 500+ lbs. lady! She C-R-A-S-H-E-D to the floor. My wrists felt ready to fall off.

I left the church and have never returned.
---Sag on 9/18/10

I think that one should worship where one feels comfortable. For some of us that is with reformed theology, some of us that is going to be a charismatic church. What is important is that we stand together in unity, as Christ would have us.
---Gerry on 9/18/10

Unsaved creatures inside "God's" house always trying to quench the Spirit: that is sin. And when the people try to quench God inside of God's own house, he will leave that temple and go to another where the people welcome his power and they will be blessed, but the church where the people tried to quench God will be turned into whited tombs full of dead man's bones, and become the synagogue of Satan.

An evangelical had complained that in some Charismatic Churches, that people were disorderly when they should be seated. The Pastor quickly agreed, and then said that it's also out of order to sit down when it's time to get out of the seat. Some Evangelical Churches are fairly lively like Calvary Chapel, or many with a predominately African-American congregation. If the teaching, or prophecy, isnt Christ oriented, glorifying Him alone, please leave, Acts 17:10-11. If its a quasi-shaker / full faker congregation, and the elders dont know how to use the gift of discernment, please run, 1Corinthians 12:7-11, chapter 14, Hebrews 5:14.
---Glenn on 9/18/10

I went to a jumping up church, speaking without interpretations, screaming, laughing, talking through service, buying and selling goods in church, never kept up a decent prayer meeting in my home more that the fingers I had on my hands, never called me or told me when anything was going on, only told me after the events. never thought to come visit me when I never turned up.

I went there for 15 years and voted with my feet. I wouldn't go back there love.

Be careful where you worship it must match the temple of the living God. as a brother mentioned in an earlier blog!

//Funny thing about things you hear. They aren't always what is really happening. You will be surprised that not everyone in that church is dancing and jumping up and down.//

True, things tend toward hyperbole.

//You might even be surprised at your own actions with the prompting of the Holy Ghost.//

...umm... there is such a thing called "group think" and similar concepts. For example, if one is in a politcal rally, the tendency to go along with the crowd. In school, college included, I've seen a whole class become of one persausion because of the teacher's pushy opinion. Furthermore, in some of these churches it's hard to focus on Christ because of the pressure to do what the other folks are doing.
---Rod4Him on 9/17/10

To claim that such manifestations are signs of the Holy Spirit is to assume something not in fact proven, but that needs to be determined.

I've seen such behavior when the preacher was publicly denying the Resurrection of Christ, and people were cheering, waving their hands, and dancing around. Was this really the Holy Spirit causing it, you think?

You will see similar behavior in MARJOE, and Gortner didn't believe a WORD of what he was saying, but was merely tickling their ears. Still say this was the Holy Spirit?

Leviticus 19:30 Ye shall keep my sabbaths, and reverence my sanctuary: I [am] the LORD.

1 Corinthians 14:40 Let all things be done decently and in order.

I was raised in a quiet and conservative church and was reserved in church till I attended my first spirited charismatic church where people were free to lift up their hands and vocally praise God, and clap their hands, and speak and sing in tongues, and prophesy, and dance, and cry. When God is glorified in his house people are changed and many will not remain still but move under the Spirit's touch and glory. Today I prefer churches that have alive services when all my senses are quickened to his presence where I can feel and smell and hear and see and know his overwhelming glory and goodness, rather than churches that hold dead services where the people leave the same way or in a worse way then when they have entered, but to each their own.

I believe that you should still go, and see for yourself how they worship in the Lord. Every congregations is different, and none of us Worship the Lord the same way. No, it doesn't make you less zealous for the Lord, because you choose to be quiet. It's about the Heart!!! Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13

Voodoo dancing/wild dancing, wild babbling, unconsciousness ("slain in the Spirit"), unholy laughter, among others things, are not from God.

The Early Church worshiped liturgically, in order, worshiping in spirit and in truth.

This is the reason that I returned to the Catholic church.

NO church is perfect. Not the Catholic church, Protestant, Evangelical, Independent, etc.

Yet, many of the latter claim that "confusion" at worship services is "important". Why? To keep Satan from "intercepting" prayers, music, etc.

I had some stupid, goofy, arguments with the leaders, and attendees, of those churches.
---Sag on 9/16/10

You shouldn't go to that church, as they are not following in the Apostolic Tradition.

"For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints [...]Let all things be done decently and in order" (1 Cor 14:33, 40).

Voodoo dancing/wild dancing, wild babbling, unconsciousness ("slain in the Spirit"), unholy laughter, among others things, are not from God.

The Early Church worshiped liturgically, in order, worshiping in spirit and in truth, not jumping like a wild animal.

As a Catholic, I go to a Traditional Latin Mass--very quite, solemn and deeply profound. The New Mass is sometimes more like a "revival" in some parishes. One worships as they are culturally bound. It is God who is being worshiped, but sometimes it becomes a focused on humans. This is where we fall into a problem. God knows the heart, no matter what. The worship of God should be pleasing to Him only. Remember, we worship always, not only on Sundays. Speaking in tongues is only one of many gifts Gods gives us, and not all have it, but they have others. At least one is able to worship God freely, which is not always the case in some places.
---Jerald_Archer on 9/15/10

In my experience, such people are very good at chanting buzz-words and regurgitating duck speak, but are not very coherent in what they actually believe.

Remember, Jim Jones attracted a large following of people from this background. They thought if they whooped and hollered and ran around and screamed while the preacher put on a good show combining cheerleading and magic acts (fake miracles), they had actually worshipped God. You will remember what the result was.

I don't know about what they use, but my Bible says, "Be still, and know that I am God."
---Cluny on 9/15/10

Just go and see how you like it. You may not be the type to dance and jump, but, that really is okay as long as you are chosen [saved]. Do not try and be like everyone else, you must be yourself. Don't pretend if it's not in you. You could just watch. Also, you might feel a little out of place. Maybe you won't. Have a good rest of the week.
---catherine on 9/15/10

Many different people will say you can't be a proper Christian because
You don't speak in tongues
Yu do speak in tongues
You worship on Sunday
You don't jump about
You do jump about
You don't get slain in the spirit
You don't like the old theologically-based hymns
You were only converted in the days before born again became a required adjective to define a Christian
You don't tithe
You do tithe
You don't like the noise of kids in the service
You allow kids to run around and disturb the serenity of the service

As Linda says, be yourself, and choose a church to suit yourself
