If we've had the FULL experience of the lost son (from the parable in Luke 15:11-32), then I think we may become Christians.

We're all in a process... But when we "wake up" and realize where we are and where's the only place we may find help, when we decide to return to our heavenly Father, admit and confess our sins, and stop serving ourselves and serve Him instead - the very moment we decide to take the first step towards Him, He'll meet us on the way, give us the best He has, and give us dignity - as His children.

Tha parable is a wonderful illustration of God's love towards us - and how He killed the fatted calf for us.
For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son - so that we may live :o)

To be a christian is to be born again..that is born of the spirit. It seems "everyone" is christian but few are truly born again.

emmy -- Google "The Amer (abbreviated) Thinker". He was speaking in Turkey, June 2007. It's also on utube.

Donna66, You're right he did say that didn't he... Well like I said, the title of Christian has lost a lot of respect & sadly our Pres. just proved it!:-{ I'm sorry our nations has gotten so cold toward God that the leader feels comfortable to make a statement like that about it.

"The president has proclaimed to all the world that we are no longer a Christian nation!" Donna66

He has? I have not heard about it... But I would like to find out more... Do you know any internet addresses or so where I could read about it? thanx :)

Reba --- Haven't you heard? The president has proclaimed to all the world that we are no longer a Christian nation!
---Donna66 on 10/25/10

If you're an American most feel they are "Christian", almost as if it was part of the citizenship. The title has lost a lot of respect over the last few decades. I feel that a Christian is someone who has accepted Jesus Christ as their personal Saviour. Tries to live for Him & follow the Bible as closely as they possibly can. They believe in the Father, Son & Holy Spirit... The 3 in 1 God of mercy, love & judgement. To me that is a Christian. A Born-again Believer.
---Reba on 10/25/10

to me it means follow the way of Christ, not of the world or flashy mega churches etc...it means though I am not perfect I am a disciple and learning & teaching others about Gods kingdom which was and is the good news and gospel Jesus came to teach.

I questioned this answer,"A true christian is one who has publicely accepted Jesus as Savior and repented of theor sins. They should also follow this with baptisim.
---shirley on 10/25/10"

The reason I question it is I found several people in China who accepted the Lord Jesus Christ but did not want it known publicly. Some did not want their families to know and one woman did not want her husband to know. When people fear for their lives are livelihoods I believe the Lord will be lenient with how many people have to know of followers decision to accept salvation.
We must remember Joseph of Airmathea was a secret follower and believer in the Lord Jesus Christ.
---mima on 10/25/10

I like (not) how people use the term "true Christian" or "genuine believer" as if someone can believe the gospel ingenuinely.

I guess some think there are three categories of people:
Non Christian
Half Christian
Full Christian

But the bible doesn't ever mention half Christians or full Christians. Someone either relies upon Christ to redeem him/her from the consequences of sin, or he/she doesn't. Either you believe God's promise or you don't.

Jesus said we must come like a little child. I don't know of any little child who is going to forsake his sinful ways to obey God. Being a Christian means we depend on God for our subsistence.

What does Christian mean? One who believes in and has faith in the messiah Jesus Christ.
---duane on 10/25/10

A CHRISTIAN is someone who is born again.

No one can make themselves born again. It is the work of God.

A Christian loues God, is humble, louing, kind, suffereth all things, is patient, suffers persecution for righteousness sake, loues their worst enemies, and prayeth for them.

Read the entire chapter of Isaiah 53.

Neither doth any that consenteth in the heart to continue in sin, belieue that CHRIST died for him. (From William Tyndales book, The Obedience of a Christian man)

Read I Corinthians 15:3-10. It's a very good passage.

I think the song "Trust and Obey" sums it all up.

Trust without obedience = imagination

"Many will say to me in that day: Lord, have we not prophesied in THY NAME? and in THY NAME have cast out devils? and in THY NAME done MANY wonderful works? And I will profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me ye that work INIQUITY." Matt.7:22-23

Obedience without trust = selfjustification?

True obedience without trust = impossible

"I am the vine, ye are the branches. He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit, for without me ye can do nothing." John15:4

Have you ever been happy at the thought of your enemy suffering in torment?

This doesnt come from God either.

Legalists will typical pick out the laws that they are good at following and forget the mention the ones they violate on a daily basis.

That is the true sign of a hypocrite
---JackB on 10/25/10

Have you ever committed adultery? if yes, then you do not love people. Have you ever committed false witnessing? If yes, you do not love people. Have you ever not kept the Sabbath holy? If yes, then you don't love God. This is what God is talking about in His laws. The first four is your responsibility toward God, and the last six is your responsibility toward others. Any kind of love if it's not coming from within, from God, springs up like a fountain of water, then it is a fake....It would be hypocritical. Take heart Christians, you have the privilege of asking God to forgive you of all your sins on a continuous bases, and to help you to love God more and people more.

Steveng -- I think many people hesitate to use the word "love" because it is a word that has been severely misused. Many people have been wounded by those who claimed to "love" them, even in a Christian sense.
What a person does is often much more revealing than what he says.
---Donna66 on 10/24/10

Why are you people afraid to say LOVE? Do you not know that most of the words you have written so far is enveloped by love? It's so much easier to say love in one word than all the words you have spewed. Of course, many of you may not know what the word "love" truly means.

But it is not only to love God, but to love everyone else, also. Remember the two commandments Jesus spoke of? And remember the one ultimate command? Remember that when we love others, we are loving God, too.

----Amen.

We can claim to follow the teachings of Jesus Christ-but what is that?
Knowing Christ-was the living Word in flesh-Immanuel-God with us.

I have to agree with emmy on this one--
Knowing Him you will keep His commandments.
Why?
Knowing The Word of God is His commandment-
renewing our mind-produces good fruit.
Knowing the Word of God-Christ-gives your life.
We labour not in vain.

Donna5535,
As to why more people don't answer:
To be fair, the question is rather ambigious so it is hard to know just what to say. What exactly is being asked?
Here are five possible meanings of the question:

What is a Christian?
How does one become a Christian?
How does a Christian behave?
What does a Christian believe?
What does it mean to you to be a Christian?

Then again... there is no shortage of inappropriate answers on these blogs. :)

What does it mean to be a tomato? -It must fulfill the criteria of what is a tomato. It doesn't help calling it tomato if it isn't really one...

So also with the label of christianity. Unless we fulfill the criteria of what is a christian, we're not actually christians... despite our confession...

I thought I was a christian long before I became one... But it's a huge difference of knowing alot ABOUT Jesus and KNOWING HIM (cf.John17:3).

What's our test?

"He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him." (1John2:4)

"I am crucified wiht Christ...Christ liveth in me, ...the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith..." (Gal.2:20)

A Christian is a soul that is born-again from Christ, and can no longer live for self but lives for Christ. It is Christ living in you. The Christian worships Christ only and obeys his Commandments. Please read- John 1:12,13, II Corinthians 5:17, Romans 8:9-11,15, Galatians 4:6, Psalm 51:10, Galatians 2:20, Colossians 1:27, I John 3:9,10, Revelation 3:20.

Revelation 14:12 Here is the patience of the saints: here [are] they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.

Revelation 12:17 And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.

A christians is one who has FAITH IN JESUS AS THE MESSIAH, AND KEEPS THE COMMANDMENTS OF GOD

It takes a VERY SMART PERSON to ask what is commonly thought of as a 'stupid question' (God chose what is foolish in the world....).

Acts 11:26 "in Antioch the disciples were first called Christians" (because of the "Incident at Antioch" wikipedia).

Paul's devotion to Jesus was called "THE WAY" (mentioned many times in Acts). Saul persecuted "The WAY" and became a MEMBER of THE WAY when he became Paul. In John 14:6, Jesus said "I am THE WAY...".

Actually, "Christian" is PETER'S CHURCH of Antioch (that word is used twice in scripture). Jesus tells us what kind of person Peter was.

Matthew 16:23 "for you are not on the side of God, but of men".

I find it funny (not the haha type of funny) that only 7 people responded to this question, yet on other questions, MANY people respond, fight, argue, debate, etc.,

So why isn't EVERYONE who is a Christian responding to this question that Honey asked? lol.

There is only one word that all the laws, commandments, and the prophets hang upon - LOVE.

If you love God, you'll obey all his commandments.

If you love people, you'll do anything for them that will glorify God for it is written that faith without works is dead faith.

Living a christian life is a 24/7 lifestyle, not a once a week pep talk dished out by denominational churches. Do an online KJV bible search for "one another," "each other," "comfort," and "encourag" and start applying what you learn on a daily basis.
---Steveng on 10/21/10

Honey,

"Christian" means many things to many people. For some it is just a religious name tag. There are lots of "christian" denominations.

For others it signifies one who is a Christ follower. Someone who accepts the teaching of Christ at face value and is trusting in him and him alone to be the one who makes a relationship with God the Father possible.
---Bruce5656 on 10/21/10

A Christian is one who believes Jesus Christ was born of a virgin, the only begotten son of God,baptized by John the Baptist, came out of the water anointed by the Holy Ghost in the form of a dove, preached to men,was crucified, rose again, and lives sitting on the right hand of God. Christians abide by,adhere to,and obey the Word of God the Bible. They walk in faith, are saved by grace, and live by the Law of Love given by Christ. They have repented of their sins, baptized in water, buried with Christ, came out of the water a risen child of God and a new creature in Christ, old things are passed away and they live in the newness of the Spirit of God. They have a heart to please God and seek to walk in his will, way, and obey his purpose for their life.

And to that I say, AMEN! AMEN!

Honey
Today, by our definition, a Christian is one who follows the teachings of Jesus Christ.
In Biblical times, no one called themselves Christian, though Some were called Christian.

The born again experience began at Pentecost, Acts 2 v 38, & they were first called Christians at Antioch.
---Lawrence on 10/21/10

It means to be Christ-like. To follow the Lord thy God, to Love the Lord thy God with all of thine heart, mind, soul.

To Obey God's commands, statues, instructions like forgiving your enemy, turning the other cheek.

It means to seek ye first the Kingdom of God and His Righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you (you can read what all these things are in Matthew).

"Till Christ be formed in you." (Galatians) is what it means to be a Christian.
---Donna5535 on 10/21/10

A christian is based on christianity.Christianity is mostly more the teachings of Paul than Jesus. The teachings Paul calls "my gospel" surrounding the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth.
Christians quote Jesus much much less than Paul. Christianity's major construct is first the atonement doctrine and second predestiny. There are minor ones also.
Others may differ but Jesus did not teach an atonement and proved it in his contact with people. And man was not pre formed for a predestiny if a question to decide one's future is given to man by God.These two beliefs are the foundation of christianity.
Jesus's teachings suffer because of this problem baggage.
