Donna66-

Never meant to say that layman are inferior in the eyes of God. This isn't a contest. Both monastics and layman are trying to reach theosis. Both try to live the Christian calling, except one takes a different (and far more excellent) path to live in communion with Christ. I admire them. Their Holy Counsels are treasures.

What I am trying to say is that for 1,700+ years, man and women went into the monastic life, and they struggled with demonic attacks, distractions, and the passions. They are far more experience on spirituality than you or I and are able to advice us. It is not easy to keep in a constant state of prayer. I don't even believe Shira believe that herself.

Ignacious---
I don't "discout" the experience of nuns and monks who have dedicated their lives to prayer. Most people who stuggle to make a living don't have the luxery of spending that much time, and so undoubtedly could learn some things from them. My only objection was to calling these people "experts" and compariing ordinary layman as somehow "inferior".

Shawn T, thank you again for the good advice you have given. I learn a lot from the wisdom you have concerning Scripture. What you said was very helpful. Thank you brother, blessings

Donna66-

Go to any authentic Orthodox website, or go to a nearby Orthodox church and research about Orthodox Monasticism.

This proves that Western Christianity has lost much in the Ancient Apostolic Tradition.

"I think none of us will ever truly be among the "experts"...."

You are right. One only becomes a Nun or a Monk if God calls him or her to that calling. However, it is very foolish to dismiss spiritual advices from those who have spent nearly their whole lives in constant prayer, fasting, studying of Scriptures, among other things (especially from a Geronda). If they struggle, and they are in solitude (or at least in a Synodia), how much more us who live in the world!

shira--//Pray on your knees then keeping in a state of prayer is easy//

I don't know of any Christian who REALLY believes that keeping a state of prayer is EASY. ( I'm not sure even you do) We have an Enemy whose constant job is distracting and doubt-causing.

I have no idea what "Hesychasm" is and probably most people on this blog don't. But being "spiritual" is not a competition, I think none of us will ever truly be among the "experts" ignacious imagines.

Shira,

Not true. If one actually study the lives of the Saints (or talk to modern day Nuns/Monks at various monasteries, such as Mt Athos), one will know that demonic attacks, distractions, and the passions often attack those who are in a constant state of prayer and spiritual exercises, like the early Dessert Monks.

Those who practice Hesychasm in monasteries and deserts will tell you that it is NOT easy to free one's nous from demonic attacks, distractions, and the passions, although few have done it. How much more for those of us who live in the modern world, full of worldly pleasures?

Don't try to be a expert in spirituality shira. Those who have more experience than you or I say it is not easy.

Cluny, you must be born again first then seek God's will for your life. Pray on your knees then keeping in a state of prayer is easy. Think on these things.

-- Cluny :

Orthodox spiritual teaching a constant state of prayer and the renewed NOUS (mind) go hand in hand... DO YOU KNOW HOW THIS IS DONE? Nobody seems to be answering this question--not even you.--Cluny

Brother, Once again... You've never asked this question, but I & others here have already shared that Prayer without ceasing is the Causality derived from the thoughts of a renewed mind, and that's how they go hand in hand... You've claimed not to be able to See or Hear this and that's unfortunate for you, but I hope you find your way.

\\Brother, The Knowledge of Rom.12:2 is the complete answer to your initial question of "how to accomplish a constant state of prayer", but now you're asking a completely different question, looking for the Wisdom to "achieve the renewed mind, stated in Rom.12:2"\\

Actually, in Orthodox spiritual teaching a constant state of prayer and the renewed NOUS (mind) go hand in hand.

Do you know how this is done? Nobody seems to be answering this question--not even you.
---Cluny on 12/3/10

-- Cluny :

how is this "renewing of the mind" achieved? You've not really answered my question. -- Cluny

Brother, The Knowledge of Rom.12:2 is the complete answer to your initial question of "how to accomplish a constant state of prayer", but now you're asking a completely different question, looking for the Wisdom to "achieve the renewed mind, stated in Rom.12:2" which is apparently something you already feel you know the answer to... So, next time try just humbly sharing God's Word like everyone else, instead of playing the game of dropping hints. Thx !!!

BTW ~ Walking in Faith is the Wisdom of how we achieve God's every Word.

**\\Keeping your thoughts amd mind in a constant state of prayer.\\
But how is this accomplished, Shira?---Cluny

Brother, It's accomplished by being not conformed to this world: but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may Prove what is that Good, Acceptable, Perfect, Will of God. Rom.12:2
---ShawnM.T. on 11/30/10**

Again, how is this "renewing of the mind" achieved?

You've not really answered my question.

(Hint--the Orthodox spiritual tradition and discipline preserves the "how" that Western Christianity has lost.)
---Cluny on 12/3/10

There are some tasks that take such undivided attention that we cannot be consciously thinking of God at the same time. God was not the author of "multi-tasking".

But we may have a humble and reverent attitude in the things we do and an ear that is sensitive to hear His voice. (Believe me, if it is really important, God will get through to you)

Then, ideally, (though quite difficult to attain) would be such intense concentration when in prayer that we are not distracted by less important matters!

Not all prayer is vocal.
---Cluny on 12/2/10

Hi, Catherine . . . ones might think this means to at every moment be talking in prayer. This would take miracle of talking in our sleep, all the time (c:

I consider it means not to stop praying, meaning that we keep on having time of prayer with God, though we may not be speaking in prayer, all the time while we are doing things.

But I consider prayer can mean deep praying, deeper than words, always being sensitive to God, in mutual communication, even in our sleep (c:

Sister, The Truest Way to 'Do' anything is to 'Be'... and whatever it is that be in our Hearts, is what we're continuously doing through every thought. Our prayers without ceasing are what truly lies in the Heart of ones Mind !!!

It's why we're to be not conformed to this world: but be transformed by the renewing of our mind, that we may Prove what is that Good, Acceptable, Perfect, Will of God. Rom.12:2

I got a lot out of this studying, because, I have wondered, from time to time, "Pray without ceasing", did it mean you do nothing but pray all the day long? Did it mean one constant babbling all day long? It's not what it means, as you'l see, if you study and read my blog up above. Yet, I do pretty much, and will continue to do so, stay in communion with the living God through-out everyday. Maybe, now, I can just relax a little more in this, "Pray without ceasing".

What's the matter, catherine? Won't your familiars give you some explanation?

Or could it be that they KNOW the best weapon to drive them away is unceasing prayer to Jesus?
---Cluny on 11/30/10

Pray without ceasing [ 1 Thess. 5:1-17] as you engage in battle. Keep the lines of communication open with the captain of our salvation [Josh. 5:13-15], Heb. 2:10]. Prayer and the word should never be separated.Note: It is the Person of the Holy Spirit who prays in us, through us, and for us....WATCHING: Be on guard, vigilant, wide awake. PERSEVERANCE. Persistence, importunity. SUPPLICATION. Specific requests for all Saints. In behalf of all believers. Christians should fight shoulder-to-shoulder and knee-to-knee.
---catherne on 11/30/10

The explanation of this and how it is achieved is taught in the Orthodox Church--without ceasing from the time of the Apostles.
---Cluny on 11/30/10

When you make prayer a life-style, and pray throughout the day - this is prayer without ceasing. Remember that prayer is you talking to God, then you listen to God. So listening and giving thanks are also included in praying. Praying without ceasing is simply putting God FIRST in your life in EVERYTHING you do.

There is a heightened awareness of the presence of God, it's what all Christians should be chasing. When you come to that it's as natural as breathing and every thought is you speaking with God.

I have enjoyed many days in non stop prayer and having to cease to have earthly communication is a burden. In that I understand how Jesus felt being burdened by faithless people, because the time with the Father is so precious.

I'm lucky enough to be a loner and having a gift of faith prayer without ceasing is second nature.
