"1 John 4:10 KJV
Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins."

Amen

---Chria9396 on 4/2/12

By keeping His commandments and abiding in the words of His Son. Rev. 12:17. John 8:31-32.

We cannot love God if we do not know who He is. We learn of Him from Jesus whom He sent to testify to the truth. John 18:37, John 8:42-43. God speaks to us thru His Son. John 14:23-24.

You cannot love God with all your heart until you follow Jesus and abide in His words ONLY. Then you will learn of the Father because they are one and the same. John 10:30.
---barb on 4/2/12

Loving God with all our heart means we must commit to God with all our heart, mind, strength, our entire being. Then we must show God in us by letting God's light of love shine forth through us. By dying to self and living to God,passing on God's love to humankind by our actions. We serve God and love him by living by his Law of Love. Having a heart to give and not always a mind expecting to receive payment for our kind action to others. Loving God like Jesus did in obedience to God's will for us. In order to do all that we must learn God's Word by heart so we have the sword/weapon we need to fight Satan.

What are God's commandments for Christians?
The answer lies also in 1John.
1Jo 3:22-23 And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight. And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.
1Jo 4:21 And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.
--Love God by loving your brother and neighbor, Most importantly, Believe--
Heb 11:6 But without faith [it is] impossible to please [him]: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and [that] he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

1 John 4:10 KJV

Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

Take the focus off your loving God and put it on how much He loved us. You cannot give back to Him what you have not first received from Him.
---Linda on 4/2/12

Cluny, thank you for correcting me. I should have known better. I was under the impression that you of all people would know I was not including Jesus Christ, since you do believe in the Trinity, and that Jesus is God and that there is no sin in Him. But I should have made it clear to others who don't know that Jesus was a descendant of Adam through Mary yet without sin. There is many unbelievers on line, so you are right. Peace to you.

Aka, you observation of me is very wrong. I don't know how many times I have said I love all of you. Every day I pray for all of you. If I didn't care I would not be giving you the Truth. What is more important then the Truth? Nothing. There is never any chopping of passages in my theology of God. I might not know everything but God will reveal much more before I die. I'm commanded to correct those who are wrong. I care about my soul also. I would not be here writing if I didn't understand what the Spirit has revealed to me through His Word. I am only been obedient to God. If I didn't love you, I would not make the effort to correct you, I would agree in everything you said and let you fall just for the sake of love. That is not love.

1 John 5:3 For this is the LOVE OF GOD, that we KEEP HIS COMMANDMENTS: and his commandments are not grievous.

Deuteronomy 5:10 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that LOVE ME and KEEP MY COMMANDMENTS.

John 14:15 If ye LOVE ME , KEEP MY COMMANDMENTS.

John 15:10 If ye LOVE ME ye shall abide in my love, even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.

Cluny, I didn't think to exclude Jesus Christ since I thought you knew He was without sin, since I thought you also believed in the Eternal Son of God.
I believe this is where the RCC and Eastern Orthodox have a problem. With Mary. And supposed that she was also without sin.

Christan, you are correct. No matter what passage in Scripture they read, somehow in their mind, they conclude it does not pertain to them, because if the passage pertains to them, they would be so wrong and not know how to answer. They might as well chop half of the Bible, and just read what they like. Then they get angry, it does not fail.

"I dont recall being around before God created the world. Were you Christan?" CraigA

Now your 'free-will' doctrine is beginning to fall deeper into the abyss of darkness.

Here's why, didn't Paul declare, "According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love.? And who are the "us" - only the Ephesians Christians? If so, the Bible is worthless to us because we are not Ephesians.

You simply hate the idea that God has declared He has chosen before the foundations of the world through your unbelief in mocking His election, even after it's taught by Paul. That's how much you hate God.

"God was talking to the elected nation. therefore, NO human not even the elect can say that they KNOW God's ways." aka

Again, if God was ONLY talking to Israel, why even bother to even read the Scriptures? Every Scripture put together by the Holy Spirit has a purpose and relation to the Christian lives. You are not dividing and discerning what Scriptures says but you are using an axe to chop the Scripture into pieces!

How then does showing you Scripture in Isaiah 55:8 come forth as "I know God's ways"? Did I say I knew? That verse shown is to tell you and I, that the carnal mind is simply an "enmity against God" ways.
---christan on 3/31/12

Let's put it in the form of a syllogism.

Major premise: \\All descendants of Adam, (the elect included) are all born dead in trespasses and sin.\\

Minor premise: In His human nature, Jesus is a descendant of Adam.

Conclusion: Jesus was born dead in trespasses and sin.

Do I understand you correctly?

the meaning is clear, but we humans keep on assuming salvation on our own understanding. Just when are we actually in God's hands? when we hear the word, when it is planted, or when it bears fruit?

"If God has already choosen them, and they are already the elect chosen before the foundation of the wordl HOW and WHY are they not yet saved?" francis

That's simply because only God knows who He has chosen and given them to His Son, before the foundations of the world. And so long as the world continues according to God's purpose and will, there are still "unborn elect" to come into this world. But make no mistake, He has declared He has chosen before the foundations of the world.

"Why do they even need to believe tobe saved they have already been elected."

"For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD." Isaiah 55:8
---christan on 3/31/12

Cluny, Election does not mean salvation. Those who were chosen by God from the foundation of the world to be saved, are the elect. All descendants of Adam, (the elect included) are all born dead in trespasses and sin. No one is saved without faith in Christ Jesus. All of the elect are brought to spiritual life by the Holy Spirit at some point in their lives. Not a one will be lost. ( 2 Peter 3:9) tells us that God is not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. The all must refer to God's children who will come to Christ to make up the full number of the people of God. Those who perish and go to hell, go because they are depraved and worthy only of hell and have rejected the only remedy, Jesus Christ.

Ruben, the "Elect" are those chosen by God before the foundation of the world. Many are not saved yet. Once they are saved, they cannot lose their salvation, because they are sustain by Christ, who is God. The reason believers are warned is because they can be led astray. The RCC believers in the beginning were warned and look what happen to the rest. Most of the members are lost because the leaders were led astray. They went away from the Gospel of Christ and introduced false teachings of man. The Authority of Scripture and warnings were not good enough, they had to add their own traditions. Even you do not believe in the Authority of Scripture, yet defend the traditions of your church over Scripture which gave you the warnings.
---Mark_V. on 3/30/12

Ruben, Then Peter tells believers they should beware and not be led astray with the error of the wicked, and fall from their own steadfastness. they should be all the more on their guard. Anytime a believer seriously listens to false teachers, he runs the risk of being led astray . (2 Tim. 2:14-18: Titus 1:10-16).
---Mark_V. on 3/29/12

Mark, Mark,

If believers(Elect) can not lose their salvation why would they need to be on guard or warn them? Remember "and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand"(Jhn 10:29)

Seems like you are finally getting it:

///Anytime a believer seriously listens to false teachers, he runs the risk of being led astray./// Thats call losing your Salvation:)
---Ruben on 3/29/12

Ruben, in (2 Peter 3:17) if you read (v.16) you will know Peter is talking about those who twist the Scriptures who are unlearned and unstable, "as they also do also the other Scriptures, unto their own destruction" talking about false teachers. Then Peter tells believers they should beware and not be led astray with the error of the wicked, and fall from their own steadfastness. Does not mean they will incurr destruction.
Since Christians now know that there will be false teachers who will appear, twisting and destorting the Scriptures, they should be all the more on their guard. Anytime a believer seriously listens to false teachers, he runs the risk of being led astray. (2 Tim. 2:14-18: Titus 1:10-16).
---Mark_V. on 3/29/12

Ruben, of course, many are forsaking the right way. I see that all the time from every Church. They hear the truth over and over and reject it, just like many here. It doesn't mean they are saved already and rejecting it now, it means they never had saving faith. Because all of God's children are overcomers because of Christ. The one's without Christ are not overcomers.
So that all believer know they were not of us.
---Mark_V. on 3/28/12

Mark these were believers at one time:

2 Peter 3:17
"You therefore, beloved, Knowing this beforehand, beware lest you be carried away with the error of lawless men and lose your own stability "

In fact (1 John 2:19) tells us, "They went out from "us" but they were not of us, for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us, but they went out that they might be made manifest that none of them were of us"

So that all believer know they were not of us.

Ruben, Jesus said there would be tars among the wheat in the visible church. (v.12)
"But these, like natural beasts made to be caught and destroyed speak evil of the things they do not understand" They had no understanding of the Truth. "and will utterly perish in their own corruption, and will receive the wages of unrighteousness" (v,13). They followed the way of Balaam the son of Beor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness.
---Mark_V. on 3/28/12

Mark, right before Paul says they followed the way of Balaam, he says " Forsaking the right way they have gone astray ,"v15- Notice you did not write that, wonder why:) Concluision: You can be in the Hand of God and still be lead away!
---Ruben on 3/28/12

"The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into His hand." John 3:35, "And I give unto them eternal life, and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all, and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand." John 10:28,29

You see, it's impossible for those whom the Father gave to the Son to ever lose their salvation that the Father promised.

---Ruben on 3/28/12

"Peter goes on and says 'some of us' will be led away:" Ruben

If you can be led away, it's very plain and simple - you never belonged to Christ - you were never given to Christ by the Father. That because Jesus declared,

Ruben, of course there is false teachers among believers, Jesus said there would be tars among the wheat in the visible church. That is what I have been trying to tell you about the RCC and other churches who change the Truth to a lie and worship idols. But (v.12) says,
"But these, like natural beasts made to be caught and destroyed speak evil of the things they do not understand" They had no understanding of the Truth. "and will utterly perish in their own corruption, and will receive the wages of unrighteousness" (v,13). They followed the way of Balaam the son of Beor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness.

---Mark_V. on 3/27/12

Peter goes on and says 'some of us' will be led away:

"But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction. 2 And many will follow their licentiousness , and because of them the way of truth will be reviled. "But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved "us" (the believers only) even when we were dead in trespasses made "us" alive together with Christ, by grace we have been saved."

ok, but let me use a verse from the scripture that you use that precedes the list.

2Pe 1:3 His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence,
2Pe 1:4 by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire.

Meaning, if God does not love you from eternity like He declared "Jacob I have loved"....Christan

Thats not Jacob the MAN, its Israel the nation. Just as Esau is actually Edom! You should really cross reference old testament scripture before making a final decision on what a passage is speaking of.

Romans 9 is not about individual election to salvation. Paul is defending Gods right to select an "Israel" based on those who show faith in Jesus Christ! Hes arguing against the Jews who might think "Gods word had failed" because they were not saved based on being decendants of Abraham and their obedience to the law.

The core of your beliefs is wrong. God loves the world (John 3:16)
---LindaH on 3/26/12

Christian, thank you for your answer. So very true. We cannot love our neighbors if we don't have the love of God in us. That other love is a fake love. It is boastful, and seeks its own. We love God because He first loved us. And because of that love ( which is Christ) we are able to love our neighbors. "And now abide faith, hope, Love, these three, but the greatest of these is Love.
We always need Christ as our Savior.
---Mark_V. on 3/25/12

WHile love thy neighbour as thyself only deals with the last six, love the lord thy God deals with all ten

that is why love the lord thy God is called: Mark 12:30 ] the first commandment.
Matthew 22:38 This is the first and great commandment.

1 John 4:20 If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?

1 John 4:21 And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.

Leviticus 19:15 in righteousness shalt thou judge thy neighbour.
Leviticus 19:16 shalt thou stand against the blood of thy neighbour:
Leviticus 19:18 but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself:

Romans 13:9 Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill,...Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

All these laws speak about our relationship to our neighbour, this is the second commandments. All of them says I AM THE LORD

Start by thinking about Jesus and his goodness, how much did he love you when he layed down his life for you? Start thanking him for his unspeakable sacrifice for you. He loves it when we personally thank him from our hearts. When he healed the ten lepers, only one went back to thank him, and Jesus said, "Were there not ten cleansed? but where the nine?" Luke 17:17. So start thanking him, thank him for saving you, thank him for being with you always, and give glory up to him, and lift him up, and worship him, and before long you will see that you are loving him with all of your heart.

where in scripture does the first four have any more importance than the last 6. ---aka on 3/24/12

I do not recall saying that the first 4 is more important than the last 6.

The first four speaks about our relationship with God. The first four speaks of how we love God

The last six how we love our neighbour.
Jesus was the one who said Love for God is the first and great commandment:
Matthew 22:37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
Matthew 22:38 This is the first and great commandment.

Matthew 22:39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
---francis on 3/24/12

"BUT you cannot love God if you hate your brother IN CHRIST. We love God when we love others...."

You contradict yourself in one sentence.

Jesus clearly declared, "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment."

Meaning, if God does not love you from eternity like He declared "Jacob I have loved", you can never love Him even if you claim you do till all the cows come home. And only when His love is poured out in you will you love your brother and enemies - not the other way round as you claim.

SUMMARY we show love for God by keeping the ten commandments, more specifically the first 4

to love God with all our heart we need to love our neighbors as ourselves.

if we could, we would not need a Savior. the only way we can love is by the Spirit. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance (Galatians 5:22-23)

the two commandments cannot exist without the other.

How can we love God with all our heart?

Question: The New Heart or the old one? The old one is incapable of loving God with all his heart. That's why we need a NEW HEART, that came with the New Covenant.

1.)Romans 5...the Love OF GOD is shed abroad in our heart by the Holy Spirit.

2.)We Love Him because He first loved us.

3.) we KNOW we've passed from death to life if we love the brethren....BUT you cannot love God if you hate your brother IN CHRIST. We love God when we love others....

And we are not talking about human love, but agape love..which is a supernatural love.

I would rather follow the Law of Liberty under Christ than live under the Law of Sin and Condemnation from Moses.
Love your God and your neighbor is true freedom whereas don't do this sin or that sin is restrictive leading some do make the restrictions larger where areas may be vague (Pharisees).
How much greater is it to let the Holy Spirit work in your life to decide what glorifies God in Love?
Granted the Royal Law of Liberty fulfills all the law and the prophets, but it also gives the freedom to do rather than not to do.
Actively engaging others and your God, rather than passive.
Many have a hard time distinguishing between the two covenants and their laws.

We cant add to this by our own works of keeping the 10 commandments.

It is true that keeping the 10 commandments will not save us, but if we are saved and love Jesus Will we not keep the 10 commandments?

dowanor:
Rom4:5 "to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness".
This is what God tells us about having righteousness. We cant add to this by our own works of keeping the 10 commandments.

Also see my post below with God's commandments to us in 1John3:22,23.
It's the same as Matt22:37-39.
Also it is what Jesus was referring to in John 14:15,21and John15:10 and 1John 5:2

Do we ignore Jesus when He said in Matthew 22:40 ALL the commandmemts hang on these two,or in John 14:15,21and John15: 10and 1John 5:2 That tell us that if we love God we are keeping His commands?

David you mentioned what God commands us to do.
1John3:22,23 22 tells us what it is.
".... we keep His commandments and do those things that are pleasing in His sight.
And this is His commandment: that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another, as He gave us commandment."

---Haz27 on 3/4/11

David
Did you notice in Matt19:17 you quoted that the rich man claimed he kept the 10 commandments BUT recognized "WHAT LACK I YET". Jesus told him to be "perfect", FOLLOW him.

Yes"Sin leads to death, and obedience leads to righteousness."
So how do we obey for righteousness?
Rom4:5 "to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness".

Then being righteous in Christ we are no longer sinners.
1Pet4:18 "If the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and sinner appear?"

"How do we love God with all our heart" By keeping the central focus of our Lives centered completely and steadfastly upon Him, with the motive and intent of our lives inclined towards that which is edifying, uplifting and beneficial to and toward our fellow man. For He who truly loves the Father "loves His brother also".
"In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another." 1John 4:10,11 (NKJV)

In the same way, in which we would come to love anyone in such a manner, that is through a sustainable loving relationship.
"How do we have a loving relationship with God?"
Jesus gave us the answer to this question in (John 14:21), it is through obedience to God.

"Good Works", are the exact opposite of sin.
Sin is doing as Satan wants you to do and "Good Works" is doing as God commands us to do, (keeping the Lord's Commandments).

In (Romans 6:16)
Paul said, "Sin leads to death, and obedience leads to righteousness."
If sin leads to death, then wouldn't obedience lead to life, just as Jesus taught the Rich man in (Matthew 19:17)?
---David on 2/27/11

I need to mature much more so I do.

But you ask, how do "we"? Well, loving God is not what I do all by myself. But we're all "members of one another" (Romans 12:5, Ephesians 4:25). Loving God, then, is what we need to do as "one body" (Colossians 3:15) of Jesus, not each one on one's own, isolated and self-righteously boasting and depending on one's own self to be supposedly loving God. But . . . together as one in Jesus, we get into truly and fully loving God, helping each other in this.

Loving Him includes being in His love's "incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God," (in 1 Peter 3:4) so we are pleasing to Him like Jesus is.

According to the Bible, how you love God with ALL your heart, is through your OBEDIENCE. Jesus says if you love Me, keep (obey, do) My Commands (10 Commandments, the Bible) (John 14:15,21,23-24).

To love God with all your heart, soul, mind, strength. To put Him above ALL others... things, people, needs, wants. To honour, trust & obey, worship. There is no way we as humans can do this perfectly, faithfully. HOWEVER, we are to strive to do this. Purpose within our heart to do the best we can in all our ways to please Him.
