Yes, the scripture records the old testament righteous people of God are: Abraham, Yitzhak, and Jacob: Henoch, Noah, and Lot: Yoseph, Moses, and Yehoshua: Samson, David, and Solomon: Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: Eliyah and Elisha. Abraham is the friend of God, and Henoch walked with God and was raptured. And Joseph had the Holy Spirit: "And Pharoah said to his servants, Can we find a man like this in whom the Spirit of God?" Gen.41:38.

Shira, the answer is yes. there was some who were endwelled by the Holy Spirit as every new believer is, in Christ since Pentacost. The ministry of the Holy Spirit was different in many ways. It was selective and not universal among God's people. The Spirit was in certain ones. In Joseph (Gen. 41:38), in Joshua (Num. 27:18), in Daniel ( Dan. 4:8: 5:11-14: 6:3). The New Testament tells us that the Spirit in the prophets gave them discernment and wisdom ( 1 Peter 1:11). The Spirit also came upon many. And it is said the Spirit filled many also in relation to craftmen working on the tabernacle (Ex. 31:3: 35:31).

1 Sam.10:10 and when they thither to the hill, behold, a company of prophets met him(Saul), and the Spirit of God came upon him, and he prophesied among them. 1 Sam.16:14 But the Spirit of God departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord troubled him(AKJV).

Genesis 1:2 And the earth was without form, and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep. AndSPIRIT OF GOD moved upon the face of the waters.

IF this " Spirit of God" is not the Holy SPirit, then what is it?

Corinthians 3:16 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and [that] the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?

\\Holy Spirit IS THE SPIRIT / BREATH OF GOD. Every one has it, but not every one is LEAD by it\\

Wrong again, francis. Again you err, knowing neither the scriptures nor the power of God.

Why in the Book of Acts did the Apostles lay hands on people so that they might receive the Holy Spirit?

Glory to Jesus Christ!

Why be promised to receive a gift that you already had?
---Cluny on 11/8/11
by accepting the gift, the Holy Spirit may work lead you.
Romans 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

Ecclesiastes 12:7 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.

Acts 12:23 And immediately the angel of the Lord smote Herod , because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost.

Mark 15:37 And Jesus cried with a loud voice, and gave up the ghost.
Genesis 25:8 Then Abraham gave up the ghost, and died

Holy Spirit IS THE SPIRIT / BREATH OF GOD. Every one has it, but not every one is LEAD by it

This is the best question you have asked since i know you.
Actually EVERY SINGLE HUMAN BEING has the breath of God / holy spirit in them.,\\

So everybody has the Holy Spirit, and belief in Jesus has nothing to do with it, right?

Wrong again.

This is NOT what the Bible says.

Acts 2: 38Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Why be promised to receive a gift that you already had?

Glory to Jesus Christ!

So are we defining the difference between the gift of the Holy Spirit that Jesus promised and the breath of life as different in purpose or the same? What about the breath of life in the animals, where does that put them? That was somewhat a rhetorical question. OT we have Prophetic office, skill/builder/warrior/king/Gods presence/life, NT we have regeneration/revelation/illumination/spiritual gifts/life/comfort/Gods presence. Just putting stuff on the table to sort through.

1 Thessalonians 5:19 Quench not the Spirit.
Some have quenched the spirit so that thier conscience no longer bothers them

I like this verse in genesis:
Genesis 7:22 All in whose nostrils [was] the breath of life, of all that [was] in the dry [land], died.

Even those who did not enter the ark had the spirit of God in their nostrils

Now Job makes the difference:
Job 27:3 All the while MY BREATH is in me, and the SPIRIT OF GOD is in my nostrils,

In Luke 16 it shows where OT saints and sinners went at death. The ones who followed God's law and kept His commandments were in "Abraham's bosom". When Jesus resurrected OT saints ascended into paradise. Paradise is in the 3rd heaven. (2nd Corinthians 12:4)

This is where believers go now. When the rapture occurs we will go to heaven at the judgment seat of Christ(2nd Corinthians 5:10)

\\ANSWER UIS YES:
Genesis 2:7 And the LORD God.. breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living soul.\\

Francis,if the Holy Spirit is just the ordinary breathing that everybody does, regardless of his relationship with Christ, then why did He promise to send the GIFT of the Holy Spirit?

Glory to Jesus Christ!
---Cluny on 11/8/11

No,The Holy Spirit,in the Old Testament, didn't dwell in everyone who obeyed God's Law. He was only given to Prophets,Priests, and Kings. That wasn't done automatically when they became those types of leaders, but was given only when a specially mixed anointing oil was used on them by those authorized by God to do so,read about the oil's formula in Exodus 30:22-33,theres also about anointing with the oil in Exodus 29. There is also a warning against using that oils formula on anyone who isn't being anointed in such a manner as as stated. If someone had that formula oil put on them and wasn't one of those positions God would cut them off from among his people.

Yes, the Spirit welled in believers in the Old Testament, but a large function was to endow people to fulfill a function for God, such as the craftsman of the ark, prophets, or King Saul. In the new covenant, Jesus promised his Spirit to all believers, it is a seal, deposit, a guaranty of our position and inheritance, regenerating us and guiding us into all truth. In the OT it was also a sign of Gods favor, or presence with believers.
In His grip

Acts 2:18 and Joel 2:28 are explicit about the pouring out of God's Spirit.

God's Spirit was not given to us until Jesus ascended/rose...

John 7:39 "the spirit had not yet been given because Jesus was not yet glorified".

OUR spirit must become compatible with GOD'S SPIRIT before God's Spirit can witness to us...

Romans 8:16
"it is the Spirit himself bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God".

Verses are from the RSV.

No. He came upon some for a season/task, but didn't dwell in them. Look through Judges...He came upon Sampson, but didn't live in him.

He couldn't abide in them because they weren't born-again. They couldn't get born-again under the law. A Savior hadn't come yet. (John 3:16)
