Black Friday Gone Crazy

This year, Black Friday sales got shoppers and bystanders sprayed with pepper spray, trampled, tasered, and even mugged and shot. Jesus said, "By their fruits you will know them."
Are sales like these something in which Christians should participate?

Moderator - We celebrate the birth of Christ during Christmas and avoid the whole gift thing.

aka: 'But this has it's own pandora's box,'

Of course internet shopping has its own 'pandora's box' as you call it.

More or less anything that keeps people separate from other people (as internet shopping does' is dangerous. In addition, it lowers prices, and makes us more likely to buy things we don't need.

In addition, it is a great way for people to trick you into buying something (less likely in the US or UK, common elsewhere) that is not what the website says.
---Peter on 12/26/14

Internet shopping is making black Friday irrelevant.

But this has it's own pandora's box, which I believe is heading a much greater and silent evil.
---aka on 12/21/14

Of course Christians should participate in black Friday! Why should we pay more for merchandise? There will always be people participating in evil on any day of the year. Greed may bring out the worst in some, however everywhere I went shopping on black Friday this year I did not experience this and neither did the people I know. Isolated incidents like these shoppers experienced can bring out the fear in everyone everywhere. Black Friday has nothing to do with anything other than saving money.

Quite true, Jed.

Divorces are never spur-of-the-moment decisions.

In a similar way, deaths, suicides, and divorces reach a peak among observant Jews shortly after Passover. If Christmas is to be blamed for divorces, then in justice, Passover must be blamed as well.

And to blame either for divorces is to fall into the post-hoc-ergo-propter-hoc fallacy.

Glory to Jesus Christ!

While it is true that more people get divorced shortly after Christmas, it's not becuase Christmas has caused thier divorce. It's because people who are planning on getting a divorce usually don't want to do it right before the holidays, especially if they have kids, because they feel it will ruin the holiday and to avoid confrontation with extended family in for the holidays. So they decide to wait until after Christmas to get the divorce. So these people who get divorced after Christmas were already wanting a divorce prior to the holiday. The holiday didn't cause the divorce. If anything it kept them together longer.

\\personally know? anyone who lives in a large city would know of dozens of people who end their marriage just after the holiday season ...or you could ask any divorce lawyer when they have the MOST business and WHY\\

In other words, Rhonda, you cannot answer my question about how many people YOU actually know who were led to commit adultery by Christmas.

Glory to Jesus Chris!
---Cluny on 1/25/12

Rhonda, how many people do you personally know committed adultery (note the proper spelling) because of Christmas?
*****

thankfully True Believers have a far greater spiritual reward when Christ returns then those who live for the temporary literary english awards and proper spelling

personally know? anyone who lives in a large city would know of dozens of people who end their marriage just after the holiday season ...or you could ask any divorce lawyer when they have the MOST business and WHY

interesting you nit-pick for stats on one point ...guessing by doing so one can overlook all the other poisonous fruits of pagan xmas too
---Rhonda on 1/23/12

\\however the fruits of xmas are widely known: most suicides, divorces, adultry, crime, theft, drunken drugged, etc etc and personal debt to participate in this foolish UNHOLY day ..the fruits of pagan christmas are evil\\

Rhonda, how many people do you personally know committed adultery (note the proper spelling) because of Christmas?

BTW--my question about Black Friday sales was prompted by such silly attitudes as you have expressed.

It's as JOKE, Son!

Glory to Jesus Christ!

Jed 'Aren't all the comments on this site prideful?'

Can't say for all, just confess for mine!

Yes, Jet, all have the problem of pride hidden somewhere in us. I suspect it's the 'base' for all our immoral thoughts!

Thanks for pointing it out

Jed on 11/28/11:
While I don't see that particula comment of the moderator as prideful, I've seen other highly judgemental comments by moderators.

So I do not see the moderators as any better than those writing on the blogs, actually

We had a Thanksgiving dinner and were playing a game with each other, when ones announced they were leaving in order to be on time for the midnight store opening. One family was not planning any warlike activities, but using cell phones to keep track of each other.

"Wisdom is better than weapons of war,
.But one sinner destroys much good."
. . . . . . . . . (Ecclesiastes 9:18)

Yes, one person can make the whole country seem warlike, since the media can single out that one person and put her in everyone's face, on TV.

But, yes, I agree . . . we can give better.

Are sales something "christians" should not participate in? Suggesting those who profess to be "christian" pay full price because they are more pious?

black friday was named because RETAILERS would be in the "black" aka in profit

if shoppers become irate out of control behaving uncivil then the police must treat them as criminals to gain control which has nothing to do with a sale on ANY DAY

however the fruits of xmas are widely known: most suicides, divorces, adultry, crime, theft, drunken drugged, etc etc and personal debt to participate in this foolish UNHOLY day ..the fruits of pagan christmas are evil

choose good fruits follow Christ and REJECT pagan xmas

The world has gone crazy and not just on black Friday. Shopping is not something I enjoy, so black Friday is not something I would participate in. In always wonder why so many women want to shop all the time. Makes me wonder what they are trying to compensate for with all those materials things.

Moderator - don't be full of pride in your humility that is what the Pharisees did. Just say the we do not do gifts.
---Scott1 on 11/28/11

Scott1, who are you to tell the Moderator he's prideful? Don't you think that's prideful to judge the Moderator's pride? I do not see how his statement of "We celebrate the birth of Christ during Christmas and avoid the whold gift thing" is any more prideful than your suggested "we don't do gifts". The only difference is he went on to explain that Christmas is supposed to be about Christ's birth, you have a problem with that?
---Jed on 11/28/11

Sure if you want to. What did you do while shopping? Did you beat somebody up to get an item? Will you be crushed if you don't get that item?
If you want an item and a company is selling it at 50% off is it not just using money wisely to purchase the item on Black Friday. Also these few events do not showcase the vast majority of bf shoppers and stores. These events would happen anyway when you put items before wisdom or God (similiar things happened with Call of Duty game in early Nov.)

Most people went to buy things for themselves, I think. They were greedy for bargains, the stores were greedy for sales, and criminals do crime. Nothing was really unexpected. :)
