Are You A Servant Or Slave

Is the believer a slave or a servant of Jesus Christ?
The KJV states we are a servant (Gal. 4:7) but the more modern versions say slave. A slave is free and owned by a master while a servant works for wages and can come and go as he pleases.

carla //LEE,
When you say their own kind do you mean the kind...

If you were to study the history of slavery you would find that there was continual tribal warfare in Africa. Negro slaves were captives and sold to slave traders who brought them to America and elsewhere.

Frankly, it is a terrible disgrace for anyone to enslave another however, this was an institution that dated all the way back to the beginning of human history.

Usually in Israel one became a slave for indebtedness, however, there was to be a release after 7 years and during the Jubilee year or after the debt was paid perhaps by a redeemer.

Some Christians owned slaves, one being Philemon. See that New Testament letter.

LEE,
When you say their own kind do you mean the kind who are ruling the western society how they changed the biblos to fit their own deceptive reasons, agreed to try to fabricate a doctrine, far from the Truth, exploit the fact that we were cursed through reading of our fate, prior to colonial slavery, before it excited the Germans, French, Americans, Dutch, etc to came together after reading in them that slaves would be made out of the Hebrews for their sins and would be punished for their idol worship, and turning away from God.

Armed with this rather than it's saving grace used it to gain riches off the back of slavery.

Come and go as I please, from Jesus???? No thank you!!!! But I am not perfect about this.

He bought me with His blood. So I am His property. And His love gives us "rest for your souls" (Matthew 11:29). But we have this rest while we do what He has us doing in His love. So, in a way, this rest and grace is my pay while I obey what His grace has me doing (c: So, I'm a servant, too, and why put myself on "time out" from Jesus and His loving???

Mrk Eaton,

God stuff on BondServant.

a bondservant was someone who had been a slave. Then when granted their freedom, then made the choice to subject themselves to servitude for the remainder of their life.

That's the idea Paul had in mind. He had been set free by Christ. Then he made the bondservant commitment

I prefer the NASB translation of dulos to bond-servant.

A bond-servant is a person who of their own free will, places themselves into the servitude of another to the complete and utter disregard of their own personal interests. That person becomes a slave to the other person, but freely of their own choosing.

I have chosen to be a bond-servant of Christ, in respect to the obligation I owe Him for the gift of freedom He gave to me.

Carla //
A slave in terms of The "christians" enslaved the Africans raped, murdered and gave beat them, flung them alive or dead into the sea, Father knows what they did to the children, took over all the diamonds and Gold mountains and precious stone out the earth rendering the land barren and poison they destroyed a nation.

And the lucky slaves were the ones that ended up in America as we still see slavery in Africa, not by whites but by their own kind.

The love of money is the root of all evil and that was the main incentive for slavery.

Lee, a better word is "servant" or "subjugate" from the word ("Douloo") sometimes used as slave in some Bibles. In the passages in Romans 6:18-22 it means, "to be subjugated, subdued." In the case of (Rom. 6:18) we became servants of righteousness in Christ. (v. 22,23) "...We were made free from sin, and became servants of God." Concerning wages, "But now having been set free from sin and having become servants of God" ( and here is what we receive for been servants ) "you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, Everlasting life, For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus"
---Mark_V. on 12/15/11

Lee Part 2: Now on the other hand, ( Gal. 4:7) does say we are no longer a slave (or servant to sin in this case) but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ." No mention here of us becoming a servant or slave but a son and a heir of God through Christ.
---Mark_V. on 12/15/11

"Is the believer a slave or a servant of Jesus Christ? " Neither.
The verse you quoted reads "Therefore you are no longer a slave [or servant] but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ."
---Josef on 12/15/11

Believers are adopted sons, servant(s) and slave(s) of God/Jesus Christ all together.
---Adetunji on 12/15/11

Paul says in Romans 6 you are a slave to the one you obey - whether you are slaves to sin, which lead to death or to obedience which leads to righteousness. It is through this righteousness that we can truley serve others.

I call Him Master, he can call me whatever He wants. I am a bondservant for Christ and am called to serve as He served, people can call me what they want. The heart is the center of this question IMO, unless you are only trying to split hairs. I take no offence in having such a gracious Master, or serving as He did, except I fall short of His glory every second it seems. What do you want him to say to you? Well done good and faithful servant. I hope for those words to come from His Holy lips.
In His loving grip

Many were Liberals, Methodists, Protestants, catholic's, Baptists, Calvinists, Jesuits, Puritans and many more.

followed the bible fact that there existed slaves and other lands from reading the bible.Thought the world was flat, Christopher Columbus( liar) claimed he was first to discover the Islands, yet there existed before he was a twinkle in his fathers eye an African trading empire in the 1st and 7th Dynasty.

You need to look at two blocks of scripture not the verse the block starts in Galatians 3:23 - 4:7 and the following Block 4:8 - 11. Paul is lambasting the Galatians for wanting to reverting back to slave or servant status where God had previously taken them for slave/servant status to the status of adopted children of God. You were treated like children until you came of age no different than a slave but when you became of ages God adopted you made you a member of his family with Christ is your brother and now you want to give all that up to become children again and be treated as slaves/servants one more because you miss the earthly pleasures you once perused.

I tell you, I feel more like a slave.
Why because, I cant stop, not that I want to stop.
But, it all the time, no matter who or what we may start talking about.
Next thing I know is Im talking about Christ and his gospel.
Seem like the only people that talk to me now, are Gods.
The others avoid me or just need me because Im very good with wood.
I dont feel like a servant. Because who do I serve?
Its God who is serving me. Ok not serving me!
But, than again he does. I cant serve you, its he that does it all.

But, do I have to do it? No!
I just cant stop!
God blessed you all!

Neither, Jesus called us FRIENDS.

John 15:14 - Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.

John 15:15 - Henceforth I call you not servants, for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends, for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.

\\A slave is free and owned by a master while a servant works for wages and can come and go as he pleases.\\

You cannot be owned by a master and be free at the same time.

In any case, the distinction we make today between servant and slave didn't exist at the time the NT was written. One word covered both: DOULOS.

OTOH, an employee was paid his wages by the day, and was in NT Greek called a MISThOTOS, which the KJV translates as "hireling." They were no more than independent contractors, as we would call such today.

Glory to Jesus Christ!
